An asterisk is used in the transliterations of this siddur to denote syllables that end in anaudible h sound. Thus, the transliterations for Yah and HahL’looYah appear in text with anasterisk (i.e. Yah* and HahL’looYah*). HPLS’s decision to note the appropriate place for the“breathy” aspirated “h” ending sound represents a long-standing scholarly debate onpronunciation. The HPLS reader is invited to experiment and decide for himself on usage.

Helpful Tips on How to Use HPLS Transliterations

In most instances the transliterations are strictly literal, and keep the Noun-then-Adjective sequence ofthe Hebrew language. For example, MehLehch Chai is literally translated King Living.

All Hebrew text and associated transliterations are read from right to left.

Sometimes it is necessary to clarify the literal translation, as denoted by added words (in parenthesis).

Idiomatic words are translated literally. An additional clarifying definition may be given just above thetranslation, underlined.

Each syllable of a transliteration starts with a capital letter.

An apostrophe (’) separates the letters of a Hebrew syllable that sound like two separate syllables. Thetwo sections of this syllable should be said distinctly but with just the slightest pause, almost as if itwere one syllable.

Bold face indicates which transliterated syllable is stressed. If no syllable is shown in bold, then thestress is

on the last syllable. In the Hebrew text, the stress is denoted by a small bar symbol under the stressed letter.

The letter combination Ch is always guttural (as in Bach).

The letter h is almost always silent at the end of a syllable.

* The end of some syllables should have an audible h sound. These syllables are noted by theplacement of an asterisk (*) at the end of the syllable. However, for clarification of thetransliteration, the letter h is omitted when following the letters Ee. For example: Yee*Yeh, ispronounced YeehYeh, with the first h audible.

Oht is pronounced Oat; similarly, Noh is like Know.

Aht is pronounced like the ot in Lot. Similarly, Nah is pronounced like Knob without the b.

Ay is pronounced like the letter a.

Eh is used for the Eh sound, thus Neh is like the Ne in Next.

Ayr is pronounced like Air.

Ai is pronounced like the letter i. Also, the letter y is sometimes used for the i sound.

Tz is used for the Tseh sound.

Uh is used for the Uh sound (never the Ooh sound) .

Oo (and sometimes Ooh) is for the Ooh sound.

There is a rule that if, at the beginning of a word, the Hebrew letter:

Beht , Kahf , Or Pay

follows an unsounded:AhLehf , Hay , Vahv , or Yood

then it loses the dot and becomes a:

Veht , Chahf , or Fay .Modern spoken Hebrew treats these letters as if they contain the dot. However, the Hebrew prayersand the transliterations in this siddur, follow the rule of no dot.

The letter tahv , with or without a dot inside, always has the Teh sound, never a Seh sound

.

NotesChapter 11. Not to be confused with HahMohLehch, which is the name of a foreign idol2. Not to be confused with ReetzPaht, which means “a coal of”3. Care should be taken not to read “BeechLee”, which is in the singular “in a vessel4. In a handwritten scroll this word is spelled ifnun.5. Care should be taken not pronounce this “VahAh” (with stress on last syllable), as then the word would become present tense(“and she is not coming”).6. Care should be taken to pronounce the shvah inside the Tahv of this word (i.e. not to read “YeetNoo”), to ensure the word has themeaning of “giving” and not of “making a condition” or similar.7. Not to be confused with ShohRayr which means “singing”. However, some have the custom to read “ShohRayr” also, with theconnotation of “overseer”.

Chapter 21.According to the rules of Hebrew grammar, there is no sound between the letters DahLeht and Tahv in this word. However, if it isdifficult to properly pronounce these two letters consecutively, without swallowing one of them and also without making a pausebetween them so much that the word sounds as if it were two words, then one may make a slight sound between them, i.e."MohLahD'tah*"2 Care should be taken not to read “Chah’dahSheem,” meaning “new ones.”3 Care should be taken to pronounce these words with the stress on their last syllables as they are in present continuous tense, while reading them with the stress on the penultimate syllables makes them into past tense (see also above, 1:17.)4 The word in Hebrew is in the past tense. One should be careful not to read “V’neekRahAh” as that would make it present tense

Chapter 31. In a handwritten scroll this word is spelled orntc, i.e. “B’ohmRahm.”2. Not to be confused with “VahYeekR’oo” which means “And they called”, or “VahYeeKahRoo” which means “And they happened.”3. Care should be taken not to read “GahLoo,” which means “they revealed” or “they were exiled.4. With stress on the penultimate syllable, to indicate past tense.

Chapter 41. Not “NahAh’seh," which means “is done” in present tense, or “we will do.”2. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled vbhtuc,u.3. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled ohhsuvhc.4. Not “NahTahn,” which means “he gave” as later in the verse, or “NeeTayn,” which means “we will give.5. Not “TahChah’reeShee” with the stress on the last syllable, as that may be interpreted ”my ploughing.6. Not “HeeGahTah,” as that is the masculine form.

Chapter 51. Not “AhSh’roh,” as that would be a causative verb “his enriching” or “enriching him.”2. Not “KahR’oo” – “they called.”

Chapter 61. Not “V’heerKeeVayHoo,” as that is in the singular “and he shall let him ride.”2. Not “VahChah’foo,” as that is the imperative “and cover.

Chapter 81. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled ohhsuvhv.2. Care should be taken to accurately pronounce this word, and not say “VahTayvch” or “vahTayfk.”3. Not “B’rahAh,” as the KahMahtz under the Beht implies the definite article.4. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled ohhsuvhc.5. For the next few verses, see and compare above, 3:12-14.6. Due to different versions in the text, some have the custom to repeat either this word, this phrase or the entire verse, one timesaying “LahHah’rohg” and the other saying “V’lahHah’rohg.’7. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled ohhsuvhv.8. In a handwritten scroll, this word is spelled ohsu,g.9. Not “TzahHoh’lah,” as that means “gladness,” a noun, while the meaning here is a verb.10. With the stress on the penultimate syllable, as having it on the last syllable would make it in the present tense.
