Lesson 1

Romans chapter 1

1. Understanding the author, the apostle Paul

a. Shortly after Jesus death and resurrection, the disciples began preaching the

word, the church began to see converts and grow exponentially

b. The disciples and followers of the Christ were targeted by Pharisees and

martyred

i. Pharisees strict adherence to the law, works based salvation, stuck

in form of old covenant, did not believe Jesus to be the savior

ii. 2 Timothy 3:1-7 talks about those who maintain a form of godliness

without having the power of God and that they are ever learning

but never come to knowledge of Jesus saving power.

c. Paul was a Jew, specifically a pharisee who held to strict Jewish law

i. Held the coat of Stephen while he was stoned to death

ii. Modeled Godly behavior on the outside but lacked the power of it

in the heart

iii. Paul was an authority on the Law of Moses

d. From the tribe of Benjamin (name meaning son of right hand or in God’s

special place)

i. Tribe of Benjamin was the smallest of the 12 tribes and was blessed

ii. Scriptures prophecy that tribe of Benjamin will be fierce warriors

but will also be in a state of perpetual violence, we see this

continued with the persecution of Christians

iii. King David’s family line

e. Read acts chapter 9 Paull was on a mission to destroy some Christ followers

on the way to Damascus he was struck blind for 3 days and had a vision and

went through a conversion, leading him to be a follower of Christ

i. Around 36 AD at the age of possibly 32

f. Name changed from Saul (meaning inquired of God) to Paul (meaning small

or humble)

i. Proof that God doesn’t care about your outward appearance and

looks at the heart

ii. What we learn from the life of Pharisees is that following The Law,

without faith breeds pride, because it causes us to think that it is in

our power or relies on us to gain salvation. Pharisees did not

understand the free gift of salvation through Jesus

iii. When Paul went to the house of Ananias he was ministered to by

disciples of Christ, He recognized the Love of God, through Christ

iv. These disciples may have been afraid of Paul but allowed the power

of god to minister through the,

v. Paul immediately goes out and preaches Jesus!

2. Romans written around 57-58 AD 20 years after Paul’s conversion

a. Letters to the Jews living in Rome, but also he was called to the Gentiles

(non Jews), these groups needed to learn how to be unified

b. Understanding the roman empire during the time of Paul’s letters

i. Center of politics and government

ii. Much wealth

iii. Believed in freedom of religion but…

iv. Polytheistic, worship whatever you want as long as you worship the

emperor too

v. In a state of constant conflict

3. Chapter 1:1-7 Paul writes to those in Rome because he knows they need

encouragement while they are living in a HOT society.

a. Paul stating his calling

b. Encouragement

c. Love for the Brethren

4. The Good news proclaimed

a. After 20 or so years he is still speaking with the passion of knowing what

God did for him.

i. Story Luke 7, Knowing our sinfulness helps us to cherish the gift of

the gospel

ii. Righteousness comes from faith VS 17

5. The Pharisee in Paul understands now that God hates sin because it hurts people

and brings death, not because he expects them to follow the law

a. Paul is making a point about the human condition. When we understand the

human condition, we understand the remedy.

b. We are all prone to sin, but the wrath of God is against that sin! Romans

6:23 there is a consequence of our choice

c. Paul is speaking specifically as an example those prior to Jesus first coming,

those who chose not to follow the Law at all, otherwise known as the Jewish

condition.

d. Vs 16-17 show that it doesn’t matter how sinful we are, Christ work on the

cross has power to save even the worst of sinners, Paul killed and

persecuted those who followed Christ and so he knows this power just as he

tells Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:15-17

e. He wants us to connect that fact that because we are unrighteous, we need

the righteousness of Christ to cure the human condition.

f. Paul is also, as he goes on in the next couple of chapters to explain HE

UNDERSTANDS what they are going through and desires that they connect to his

example. He points out without excuse, we know what has been made available.

KNOW THE HOPE TO WHICH HE HAS CALLED YOU, THE RICHES OF HIS GLORIOUS

INHERTIANCE IN HIS HOLY PEOPLE AND HIS IMCOMPARABLY GREAT POWER FOR US

WHO BELIEVE. -Ephesians 1:18

Romans 2

1. Addressing lack of unity between Jews and Gentiles Vs 1-16

a. Jews were judging the Gentiles walk with Christ.

b. By worrying about others, they refuse to look at themselves

i. Refusing God’s kindness, refusing repentance

1. Contempt = feeling that a person or thing is beneath consideration,

worthless or deserving scorn. (NIV version)

2. King James Version says despising God’s goodness

2. The Jewish condition

a. Spiritual pride VS 5

i. Having a form of Godliness but lacking the power

ii. Believing because they had the law, they were better but didn’t understand it was

instinct for those who didn’t have the law, the law was on their hearts. VS 14 (one

translation says instinct one says written on their hearts)

b. Teach others but don’t teach yourself VS 21

i. What they didn’t understand was Jesus fulfilled the law, no matter how good we

are we cannot fulfill it.

ii. Matthew 5:17-28 in NLT our righteousness is better than scribes and pharisees

when we receive Jesus righteousness through faith.

c. Stuck in the old way of doing things

i. The Jews in Rome didn’t understand grace for all (only for themselves), they didn’t

get that Jesus death was given to all who would believe. Welcoming others who

don’t think or behave the way we do takes faith on our part that God is responsible

for the work in them, not our judgement of them.

a. Have you ever caught yourself saying…..”how can they be a

Christian if….”?

b. We can’t judge only the outward appearance of the fruit.

Sometimes we have to taste it before we can tell if it ripened on

the vine.

c. Relationship with God’s people is key!

ii. God is faithful.

1. Paul is explaining to the Jews in Rome, even though they doubted it was

for the gentiles, Paul points out that even in our (and others

unfaithfulness), God is faithful, Jesus blood is for ALL. Romans 1:16-17, it is

the power to save ALL who believe

3. How do we get unstuck?

a. Circumcision of the heart, God change me, letting him weed out all the old stuff

i. 2 Corinthians 5:17, we are a new creation in Christ Ezekiel 36:26 says He will give us

a new heart.

b. What are you allowing to speak in to you? Conforming our thoughts to the word, speaking

the word will get rid of the “Stinkin thinkin” Romans 12:2 (joseph’s illustration on thinking

one thing and saying another doesn’t work)

c. God has been patient with us, His kindness is intended to lead us to repentance


i. Vs 4, we should freely give the grace we have been given.

d. Build relationships with the body of Christ

i. Vs 11. God doesn’t show favoritism, and neither should we no matter where people

are in their walk. We aren’t always privy to what God is doing in and for them.

Build relationship rather than judge.

ii. What are the words we speak over others? Speaking the wrong words over others

keeps them in prison - Pastor Dave

1. Life and death are in the power of the tongue. Proverbs 18:21

2. Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. Matthew 12:34

3. Our actions flow from our words. Proverbs 4:23

e. When we want to change others with no desire to change ourselves.

i. here is what Jesus says will happen.

1. Mark 3:23-27/Matthew 12:22 a house divided against itself cannot stand,

no one can rob a strong man’s house unless the strong man allows it. The

enemy only overcomes you when you allow it to.

2. We have Christ who is stronger than the enemy, we can’t allow those

thoughts to come in and rob us of the victory! The enemy comes to steal,

kill and destroy John 10:10 He wants to steal the word of God in us, kill our

relationships and destroy our faith BUT…..Greater is HE that is in ME than

he that is in the world! AND the SAME power that raised Jesus from the

dead lives in us!

f. We are all subject to God’s judgement, shouldn’t we be spurring each other on to love and

good works Hebrews 10:24

i. You do not know what others struggle with! So encourage them in their walk, your

encouragement might be just what they need to overcome something they are

struggling with.

4. What to do when others don’t agree

a. Pray! The answers is to ALWAYS PRAY FIRST. Read Ephesians 6:18 out of NIV first and then

the passion translation

b. 2 Kinds of Wisdom, Earthly wisdom: change others. Spiritual wisdom: change me

My final point tonight is that we would all be better off learning to

fish for men, than spending time picking apart the fruit on the vine.

Psalm 133:1 how good and pleasant it is when God’s people live

together in UNITY!

Lesson 3

Romans 3, 4, & 5:1-11

1. God is faithful

a. The law could never save us from our sin, but the Jews thought they had an

advantage as they were entrusted with the very words of God.

i. Their pride in this manner caused them to boast in self. (earthly wisdom)

ii. Galatians 5:1-6 Paul is telling the Jews to NOT rely on the law but rather rely

on Christ for justification

iii. We try to magnify our own goodness by bringing our own works to salvation

but really all we do is magnify God’s goodness because we know our works

are never good enough (example of million $$ house)

1. Works = compensation (owed to us) this would be tiresome and

never ending

2. Faith = free gift (we can never pay what we owe) Abraham was

balanced by what God credited to him not by what he put on the

books ch 4 vs 3

iv. Justification by works seeks to glorify man not Christ (ch 4 vs 2) but we can

only boast in the Lord 1 Corinthians 1:26-31

1. King David certainly was not justified by strict adherence to the law

and he understood that we are blessed because our sin will never

be held against us, when we are justified through Christ.

2. However, that does not mean that the more we sin, the more God’s

forgiveness is magnified

a. We tend to give more praise when someone has come to

the Lord after a hard life of sin, than we do to a person who

comes to the Lord living a good life and doing right things.

But understand it may be harder for someone to come to

the Lord when they are a “good person” because they are

self-reliant.

b. Matthew 19:16-26, he went away grieving, he had lived a

right” life but had not put his trust in Jesus. In order for him

to sell everything and give it to the poor, he would have to

put complete trust in Jesus to provide all that he needed.

2. Against all hope, have hope

a. Because of Abraham’s faith, we can also have the promise of grace through faith ch

4 vs 16 (1 Cor 1:27, foolish things to surprise the wise)

i. Vs 21 Abraham being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he

had promised. Complete faith in God. Abraham almost 100 and Sarah 90


b. What does that mean for us? We are heirs to the same promises through faith in

Christ. (Promises of God hand out)

3. Faith in God’s word to us, means you can rest assured His promises will be fulfilled.

a. The evidence of having this faith is the fruit of the Spirit working through us.

i. Galatians 5:22-24

4. The JOY of our salvation Romans 5:1-11

a. Through faith we have peace by gaining access into grace. During times of hardship

and suffering this grace helps us to persevere, which builds character that leads to

hope of our salvation

b. The evidence is that when we were still sinners Christ died for us.

i. The promise has already been fulfilled, this brings joy. We can always show

that God’s promises are yes and amen because we have the evidence of it

already.

5. When you are feeling like you need to earn it.

a. We all struggle with guilt and sometimes we try to earn God’s forgiveness by

DOING, or WORKING, or LIVING RIGHT. But the truth is, we can’t earn it.

b. Remember 2 kinds of wisdom

i. Human or earthly wisdom – penance, a feeling of needing to pay for what

you have done

1. Prov 3:7, don’t be impressed with your own wisdom

ii. Spiritual wisdom – repentance, to turn from, not payment for what has

already been done but rather accepting forgiveness and trusting in God’s

grace to help us not do it again.

1. Philippians 3: 12-14 Forgetting what is behind and pressing on

toward the mark

We owe everything and yet because of Christ we pay nothing! That should make you SHOUT FOR JOY!!!

John 15:1-11

I am the true vine, and you are the branches.

Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides

in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from

me you can do nothing

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will

be done for you.

By this my Father is glorified

These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy

may be full!!!!!

Lesson 4

Chapter 5:12-21 and Chapter 6

1. Born into sin

a. Faith to believe in Christ finished work (the previous 3 lessons)

b. Result of sin is shame, The Battle! The reason we feel we need to work for salvation.

i. Genesis 2:25 Naked and felt no shame

ii. Enemy twists the word Genesis 3:1

iii. Genesis 3:6-7 They suddenly felt shame (read definition)

iv. Genesis 3:8-10 They hid from the Lord

c. Because of Adam, Humanity is prone to wander

i. Romans 5:12 Adams choice spread to everyone

2. How does sin and shame affect us

a. Gen 3:7 feel shame

b. Gen 3:7-8 tried to cover their own sin and hide from God

c. Gen 3:16-19 banished from Eden (blessings) reap consequences, block blessing in

our life (some impact others in our life, generational blessing or curse)

d. Gen 3:23 Adam went to work, not to earn salvation but to learn the principle of

reaping what you sow.

e. Cultivating our soil is crucial to growth

i. Luke 8 parable of the sower (pray for good soil)

3. Effect of the power of shame in our lives Romans 5:18

a. A slave to what we chose to obey Romans 6:16 (flesh, thoughts, God’s word)

i. Adam and Eve had God’s word, chose not to obey it. (the first

commandment} the soil of their heart was not fertile ground and the weeds

(Satan’s deception) coked it out, shame took over their thoughts of God

ii. When we fall, we are subject to judgement of others and accusations of the

devil, so also our instinct is to hide.

1. Example 1: John 4: 1-24 the woman at the well came to get water

when it would not be a busy time

2. Example 2: Luke 8:25-29 the woman with the issue of blood, crept

through the crowd as to not be noticed, her hemorrhage was a sign

of uncleanliness in those days and it was shameful

a. She tried everything in her own power to get clean vs 26

then she heard about Jesus!!

iii. Ch 6 vs 19 When we hide, we become vulnerable to enslavement to our

thoughts, guilt. It then becomes easier and easier to fall into the trap

repeatedly. Ch 6 vs 19 We try to solve the issue of guilt and shame in our

own power, but we know works cannot earn salvation.

1. Except the strong man allow it Mark 3:22-30 the same power that

Jesus had to set captives free lives in us, therefore we tap into that

power to gain victory over the enemy’s schemes (MH commentary)


2. We don’t just hide from God we also hide from the body of Christ,

again isolation makes us vulnerable

a. Enemy comes to steal kill and destroy John 10:10

b. If he can steal the word, what we have planted into

ourselves but also what others speak into us, he can kill our

faith, unbelief in Christ’s finished work makes us vulnerable.

Jesus left the 99 to go find the one, he knew their

vulnerability to the attacks of the enemy

3. Ephesians 6 armor of God speaks to the importance of our

connection with God and Hebrews 10:25 the importance of our

connection to the body.

4. How do we break the power of shame?

a. Hiding in the right place

i. Abide in the shelter of the Almighty, we find refuge Psalms 91:1-4

ii. Hebrews 6:18-20 (read)

iii. Hebrews 10:23-25 (read)

b. Following Jesus example

i. Hebrews 10:26-29 and Matthew 3:13-17 (read) Jesus obedience in baptism,

his example for us to carry out ALL that God requires. God was pleased with

this.

ii. Ch 6 vs 3-11 through being united with Christ in his death by obedience

iii. With the same power to be raised to life with Christ. Ephesians 1:3-21 (read)

5. Full circle to faith in the finished work of Christ!

a. When we remain connected, we tap into the power of Jesus and our faith grows and

becomes strong in the power of the blood of Christ.

i. Example 1: the woman at the well John 4:28-30, She went and told the

whole town what had happened, because of her testimony many other

Samaritans came to know Jesus

ii. Example 3: the woman with issue of blood Luke 8 When Jesus asked who

touched my garment, frightened and trembling, she was overcome by his

love and confessed

b. Ch 6 vs We also must come to the place of humility; being overcome by His love we

confess and are forgiven, and it is then the shame no longer bounds us to feeling of

needing to earn is but rather we cultivate and understand that we sow in Christ and

reap in Christ.

I’M NO LONGER A SLAVE TO ___________, I AM A CHILD OF GOD!

John 4:34

Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work.

John 19:30

Therefore when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And He bowed His

head and gave up His spirit.

Lesson 5

Romans 7

1. The struggle is real

a. Chapter 7 Vs 1-14 do you find yourself agreeing with the preacher on Sunday, not

able to apply or live up to the message on Monday? We all go through but why?

i. Vs 4 Live in flesh rather than die to flesh

ii. Vs 5 Enemy twist the word just like in the garden and then we are led away

by our own flesh James 1:14

iii. What are we making agreement with? Vs 5-8

iv. Have you ever said, “LIVING THE CHRISTIAN LIFE IS TOO HARD FOR ME”

v. Those who are motivated by the flesh do what benefits them Chapt 8 Vs 5

b. So, then we find in our sprit we long to do one thing and yet in our flesh we do

another. Vs 18-20

i. Regret and shame come after

ii. Justifying our actions

iii. Giving more power to our enemy, exhaustion and isolation leads to

vulnerability. Vs 15-21

c. Once we are down the enemy likes to keep us down.

i. Are we connecting in our brokenness more than connecting through our

connection in Christ?

ii. The enemy is crafty. He knows our desire to connect, we want to be real,

iii. Vs 13. We speak the power of brokenness over ourselves and others rather

than speaking the power of redemption and victory over ourselves and

others.

d. A power in me that is at war with my MIND Chapter 7 Vs 23

i. We must learn how to combat the plans of the enemy

ii. Paul is helping them to see that as a body we NEED each other, and that by

disconnecting and connecting in the wrong way keeps us ALL in bondage.

2. The remedy is a four-letter word, L O V E

a. What does love do?

i. Chapter 8 Vs 3 God sent his son to accomplish what the law could not. The

ultimate sacrifice is our example. READ Hebrews 4:15

ii. Chapter 8 Vs 11 the same spirit that raised Jesus lives in you.

iii. READ 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 in NLT this is living in the spirit, it is opposite of

the flesh desires.

b. How can we live in LOVE? Following the Impulse of the Holy Spirit Chpt 8 Vs 14-16

TPT Walking in the light

i. 1 John 1 :5-10 God is light

ii. john 8:12 through Jesus we birthed into new life and can see light through

him.


iii. John 12:36 when we believe we become sons of the light

c. What happens then, when we walk in the light?

i. 1 John 1:5-10 we have fellowship with God

ii. 1 john 1:3 we have fellowship with one another

iii. 1 John 1:5-10 the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin

3. Walk in the light as He is in the light, Impulse of the Holy Spirit, Holiness

a. Walking in the light does NOT mean sinlessness or perfect, if that were so we would

not need the blood to cleanse us

i. If we say we have no sin, the truth is not in us and If we say we have not

sinned the word is not in us 1 John 1:8

ii. Job1:8, God calls Job blameless and in chapter 7:11&21, Job confesses his

sin.

b. So what does it mean to walk in the light?

i. READ 1 Corinthians 13

ii. 1 John 2 8-11 Jesus example L O V E, whoever loves his brother abides in the

light and there is no cause for stumbling (Sin is relational)

iii. How do we love our brother?

1. 1 John 1:9 if we confess our sins, he cancels them out and cleanses

us.

2. When one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers. When

we sin against others or ourselves we suffer, we become unable to

serve others well, one part of the body is sick. 1 Corinthians 12:26

3. Sometimes we are so worried with getting ourselves to heaven we

don’t consider that others are also struggling to get there.

4. What does it mean to LOVE? Love is placing value on something,

when we confess to each other, we place value on other members

of the body. James 5:16. Then we can add on top of that prayer for

one another we actually see one another overcoming the issues we

have and witness true healing.

MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL, CONTINUE TO SHOW DEEP LOVE FOR EACH OTHER, FOR LOVE COVERS A

MULTITUDE OF SINS. 1 PETER 4:8

Lesson 6

Romans 8:18-39

1. Vs 15-17 We are heirs and we have a promise to share in God’s glory but if we are to share in

the glory, we must also share in suffering

a. Story of Abraham and Isaac. Genesis 22:1-18

i. God tested the faith of Abraham. Vs 1, Abraham had CLOSE relationship with

God

ii. Abraham could move forward in taking Isaac up the hill because of the

confidence he had God’s promise to him. Hebrews 11:19

iii. God provided a replacement for Isaac because He knew Abraham was willing;

iv. Imagine though the suffering and pain he must have felt as the two of them

walked up the hill? I believe it gave Abraham an understanding of what it would

take for God to provide atonement for the world. Abraham may have felt

separated from God or his love in that moment, but he was becoming

transformed into the likeness of God.

b. Abraham somewhat understood the pain and suffering God felt in offering up his

beloved son. But, when God provided the ram in place of Isaac, Abraham got a whole

picture of God’s love for His creation. This is the Love of God revealed to Abraham.

c. I believe God was letting Abraham in on the plan to save humanity. We know that

Abraham loved people, we see this in the story of him pleading for God to save a few

righteous people.

2. Abraham knew full well the state of humanity, but pleaded for them to God

a. Genesis 18:16-33 we know that God did not spare Sodom and Gomorrah under the old

covenant.

3. Even though we have atonement and salvation available to us, we still live under the

consequence of sin. In vs 23 we see that all creation longs for the full Glory of God to be

revealed and the hope of freedom completely from the effects of sin. God is fully aware of the

agony we endure in the waiting.

i. All creation longs to join the Children of God in freedom from death and decay.

Vs 21 we know this is true about creation longing to praise Jesus because Jesus

himself said, even the rocks would cry out if we stopped praising Luke 19:28-44

Only the power of God, quiets creation from crying out.

1. Death and decay (physical, emotional and spiritual) is the effect of sin

and we suffer because of it. vs 23

2. We as children of God, through faith in Christ, have a foretaste (first

fruits TPT) of this glory, it is the Holy Spirit indwelling. In the holy spirit

we get a small taste of what that freedom from death and decay will be

like, a foretaste of what it will be like to gain our FULL RIGHT,


(experience full status TPT) as children of God, that which has been

promised to us.

4. Because God the Father, God the Son and Holy Spirit are triune, and are in perfect unity, having

the indwelling of the spirit in us cause all things to work out for our good, when we surrender to

the will of God. Vs 28

a. What this means is that even in the bad stuff we endure, trials and suffering, God is

bringing about change in our hearts. When we surrender to what God wants to do in us

and for us, we also are transformed more and more into the likeness of Christ Vs 29

b. This verse doesn’t mean that when we surrender to Christ everything in life has a happy

ending, in fact more often than not, battles become more intense but remember, His

grace if sufficient and His power is made perfect in our weakness because we surrender

and rely on Him to work within us and on our behalf……TO BRING ABOUT WHAT IS BEST

FOR US.

c. When we are being tested it can feel like separation from God or separation from the

love of God but what is best for us is our own repentance and surrender. Job 42:1-6

5. How do we endure that testing of our faith? Paul gives is a picture of how important the holy

spirit is during our trials

a. Vs 26 the Holy Spirit empowers us in our weakness

b. Vs. 26 Groans for us with emotion too deep for words

c. Vs. 27 Pleads before God that our destination in life will be in PERFECT HARMONY with

God’s plan

6. Testing of our faith produces perseverance, James 1:2-3

a. whatever we are having to endure there is a purpose and it is for our good! How do we

know this? Because we know God’s love is always with us.

b. We see this in multiple bible stories throughout the OT. Joseph, Abraham, David, Esther,

Daniel…etc.

7. THIS IS OUR HOPE……Paul says NOTHING can Separate us from the LOVE OF GOD, which is God’s

glory.

a. Think about the visual aid Pastor Joseph gave us about God the Father, God the Son, and

God the Holy Spirit and how they are connected, so when we have one, we have them

all.

b. Vs 337-39 We are more than conquerors because nothing can Separate us from the

LOVE OF GOD

c. If nothing can separate us from God’s love, we can also rest assured He will provide

everything we need to endure and grow during our times of trial and testing.

BECAUSE, Y OU DON’T KNOW HOW MUCH THEY LOST IN THEIR LOSING SEASON.

Romans Chapter 9

1. Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb. Matthew 26:28, Jesus at the last

supper saying this is my blood that confirms the covenant between God and man.

a. Vs 6-8 being a physical descendant of Abraham doesn’t make you a child of God

i. Jesus said he wished that ALL would come to repentance.

b. What makes us a child of God is being in Christ, nothing can separate us from the love of

God in Christ Jesus Romans 8:38

i. Vs 30 says even though they were not trying to follow God’s standards, they

didn’t pursue righteousness but attained it anyway by faith.

2. We have the choice to pursue law, or pursue love

a. Vs 33Jesus became a stumbling block to those who pursued the law. As much as they

loved God they used their religion as a behavior modification program.

i. Why is it a stumbling block? Because of pride that caused lack of faith. You can

read about that in Isaiah 28:1-19

b. The gentiles on the other hand received salvation through faith because they pursued

love, it’s a reoccurring theme in Romans. Vs Pride will keep you from faith!!!

c. So what we learn from this is that rather than trying to obtain, we need to learn to

abide. Abiding in Christ builds our faith!

i. When we abide, we learn to be loved and how to love, Psalm 91:1, John

15:4,7,10 and many more

3. So what does it mean to pursue Love? Here are 2 examples

a. Vs 15-16 It is God who decides to show mercy we cannot work for it or choose it.

i. Even while we were enemies with God he chose to show mercy and send his

son. We learned of this in Romans 5:8

ii. Vs 3 Paul says he would be willing to be cut off from Christ if it would help them

understand the concept of salvation by faith in Christ.

4. When we begin to abide rather than working to obtain we find it is easier to do the 2 things

Jesus commanded us to do, LOVE GOD, LOVE PEOPLE.

a. Love God with all our heart, all your soul and all your mind.

i. Christianity is not a behavior modification program, but it is difficult to love God

with ALL, when our mind heart and soul are wrapped up in woundedness.

ii. Many times, as believers the issue that keeps us from not being able to fulfill

this is soul woundedness.

iii. Often, we look for healing from our woundedness in sinful behavior which

causes further separation and woundedness, rather than abiding in the healer.

This is why God hates sin, it separates us from him and causes us more pain.

iv. Recovery is painful, it is often said that the degree to which you endure the pain

is the degree to which you will recover, we must allow the Lord to help us


unpack the wounds of our past and allow him to bring healing. Psalm 91 is my

favorite verse when it comes to learning about healing through abiding in Christ.

v. Abiding in Christ helps us to renew our mind, we are going to get into this more

in the coming weeks. However, we must understand that until we are whole, we

will always have difficulty Loving God and Loving others in the way we are called

to do. It’s important to heal from our past wounds. The focus becomes Him

rather than us.

vi. 2 Chronicles 16:19 strengthen the hearts fully committed to Him

b. Loving your neighbor, as yourself.

i. Same goes for loving others, out of fear of getting hurt we isolate, out of anger

we lash out, out of soul woundedness we miss the mark of the high calling that

has been placed on us. Philippians 3:8-16 NLT and TPT comparison

ii. As we begin to allow the Lord to heal our wounds, our faith in him increases and

as we learn to abide in him DAILY, it then becomes more about HIM and less

about us. Our minds are occupied by HIM not our wounds.

iii. In Acts 10:38 Jesus went about doing good. He didn’t do it to earn favor from

the father or to earn his salvation but because he had the same love for people

that the father had. It was about doing his Father’s will

iv. Paul understood this love in that we wished he could trade himself for his

brothers and sisters. This is how I know Paul was healed from past wounds.

v. Jesus said, Repent for the kingdom of heaven has come near, repentance means

to change ones mine….not just change our behavior, again that’s works

mentality. Our thinking must change, our behavior will not change. As we

occupy or minds with the things of God, our behavior changes too.

1. It’s about continuing to learn, continuing to grow, sanctification is a

process. The mind of Christ is our inheritance. God will give wisdom

liberally without restriction. 1 Corinthians 2:16

vi. When we fully understand the impact of the blood of the covenant, we feel

safe, whole, loved, forgiven, we want others to feel the same way. we will do

good deeds because it is the will of the father rather than working to earn favor.

We will love people because we want them to experience the Kingdom of God.

vii. Jesus loved the people who didn’t believe in him (father forgive them for they

know not what they do) and even Paul loved the people that didn’t have his

same faith. Are we willing to be “cut off” so that another would understand the

concept of Christ OR is our pride causing other believers or non-believers to

stumble?

Lesson 8

Romans 19

1. We have been beating up on the Jewish people however let’s take a closer look at why they

worked so hard to keep the law, and why it was such a hinderance to them.

a. Joshua 1:8, following the law is prosperous, and many other scriptures that talk

about the benefits of walking in precepts of God. There is protection and blessing in

following Godly principles. God’s word does not return void.

b. But there is also difficulty in keeping the law because we live in a fallen world, Adam

and Eve didn’t have a problem with sin until they ate of the tree.

c. God gave the Law to expose sin, but that also gave people a sense of control over it

and a feeling that they could lord that over others.

d. The Jewish people wanted to please God, even after Jesus came, their heart was to

please God.

2. Would you agree they were zealous, passionate? Yes, Paul says in Romans 10 they were

zealous or had GREAT enthusiasm but without knowledge, or what the NLT calls misdirected

zeal.

3. Another example of misdirected zeal

a. 2 Samuel 7:1-2 David wanted to build a place he thought was suitable for God, it

seems like it would be a worthy cause, but God was NOT IN IT. Even though Nathan

said that God would be with him. Nathan’s word was not divine inspiration either

but rather human opinion

i. Psalms 69:9-12 this caused David to become exhausted and left feeling

depleted. He was trying to do something worthwhile and good, but it was

NOT God’s will or plan for him at that time. Not necessarily a direct act of

disobedience but not seeking God first

b. 1 Samuel 15 God told Saul to destroy the Amalekites and even though Saul had

defeated them, he didn’t destroy EVERYTHING as God had told him to do. Read VS

15-23 Obedience is better than sacrifice. This example is a direct act of disobedience

and relied on what he thought was right and best rather than doing what he knew

God wanted. The word shows he thought he had done a good thing, when in fact is

was misdirected zeal.

4. Ways we can have misdirected zeal?

a. VS 14-15 we want to spread the news of who God is and what he has done for us.

Most definitely a worthy cause and we should tell of the good news but here are

some examples of how our message can get distorted.

i. We can find ourselves holding others to a standard that we are not willing

to live up to, like the pharisees did. (ever hear yourself say…..”well they just

need to….”) anger over sin is appropriate but we must share a redemptive

message not just a “thou shalt not!” narrative.


ii. Vs 17 we should consider what message we want to portray. Sometimes as

Christians we want so much to be right that we neglect being Christ like. We

try to defend the word of God, but we must consider the frailty in our

theology. If we are led by the spirit, we won’t need to defend the Gospel,

our love will be the proof of it!

b. Other examples of misdirected zeal

i. Trying to earn salvation by doing works. Obedience allows us to experience

God’s love not earn it. Walking in obedience brings freedom and rest. The

word says the Holy Spirit will lead us into all truth, when we seek him he will

tell us the right things to do and not do.

ii. Trying to do a work or mission for the Lord that God hasn’t called us to do.

Like David it can seem like a worthy cause but without God’s direction it will

only leave us feeling depleted and sad. Psalms 127:1 says unless God build

the house, those who labor, labor in vain.

5. Passion is great, but obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit is key.

a. Following the law is a sacrifice, doing work for the Lord can be a sacrifice, but in it

are we doing the will of God, are we doing what the Holy Spirit is leading us to do.

b. Vs 11, says anyone who trust the Lord will not be disgraced, also Paul said this in

chapter 9:33. He is making the point of the importance of trusting in what God is

telling us to do, not just doing what our human nature thinks is right. We must

measure things up with the word but also allowing the holy spirit to speak to us, 1

Thessalonians 5:21, John 16:13. Again the spirit leads us into truth and only speaks

truth.

6. Its not about doing, its about what is in our heart, the right kind of zeal!

a. Jesus had zeal WITH KNOWLEDGE, and appropriately directed. When we are led by

the Holy Spirit, we will also appropriately direct our zeal. We see this all through the

book of Matthew but let’s focus on a few things.

i. Matthew 9:17 Jesus didn’t come to abolish the law as stated in Matthew

5:17 or to patch up a hole or to put a plug in the dam but Jesus came to

MAKE NEW the old way of doing things. Completely new wine skins.

ii. Matthew 9 we see Jesus at the height of business and his passion at work!

1. Jesus did the will of the father Matthew 3:15

2. Jesus gave a message of redemption Matthew 9:2

3. Jesus was interruptible and not afraid to touch something

considered unclean Matthew 9:18-22, Matthew 8:1-4

4. Jesus put sin in its place while still loving people Matthew 9:11-13

b. As we read in Romans, we shouldn’t cling to what we think is right but rather trust

in the Lord, because in this we won’t be disgraced like in the examples of Saul and

David. Romans 10:14 when we do what is right in our eyes, we are left depleted and

others view of God can be hindered.

When we GO after being SENT, those who weren’t looking for God, will be shown who HE is.

Lesson 9

Romans Chapter 11

1. Vs 1-10, even in our unfaithfulness, God is faithful, and is pursuing us always

a. Israel’s rejection made a way for us to have salvation, but in everything God does there

is a plan for the good of ALL mankind, He is always faithful even when we are not. Read

Psalms 78:37-39

b. Vs 11 and 14 God pursued the Jews by rousing their jealousy. By giving to the Gentiles

what they had rejected so in essence they would want it too! God is always pursuing us.

i. Have you ever thought about a family member going down the wrong path and

your heart is broken for them? Is it possible that God is using their “current

state of blindness” to help them see what He has available to them.

c. Another example of God’s faithfulness Matthew Henry states “By rejecting the gospel,

and by their indignation at its being preached to the Gentiles, the Jews were becoming

enemies to God; yet they are still to be favored for the sake of their devout fathers.”

Read vs 28 and 29

i. Vs 29, The gifts and callings of God can never be withdrawn. God’s promises are

yes and amen and those things that he promised to Israel He was faithful in

bringing those about regardless of their faithfulness or lack of it. Those blessings

have and continue through generation to generation.

ii. Generational blessings are the real deal. It is important for the sake of our

families to live a life worthy of our calling. Our children and grandchildren will

be blessed not by our perfection but by our willingness to trust God in all things

and pursue life in the Holy Spirit. We see this example in the life of Abraham,

Isaac and Jacob.

d. Even while he was in pursuit of His chosen people, He pursued all mankind by making

the covenant available to ALL WHO BELIEVE.

2. We are given the opportunity to be Ingrafted in

i. Grafting of a wild olive tree happens when a bud or branch of a fruitful tree is

inserted under the bark of a decaying tree.

1. Paul uses the word wild olive for 2 reasons

a. Wild olives are often used as the rootstock, where they cut a

dead tree in half and insert a root. This caused greater strength

and more resilient fruit

b. Paul is referring to our nature and conversion. Our conversion is

the grafting in. many times we see those who live what we

might refer to a “wild” life after conversion become

powerhouses for God. Ie. Keith Green, The Apostle Paul, Abby

Johnson, the woman at the well


ii. What are the benefits of grafting?

1. It brings about desirable fruit (abiding in the Holy Spirit, fruit of the

spirit)

2. Brings rich nourishment to the decaying tree (vs 17)

3. It brings strength to a weaker tree (the same power Jesus has lives in us)

4. Builds resistance to disease (healing body mind and soul because of

Christ and His word becomes our defense against those things wanting

to destroy us)

iii. In order to graft successfully the 2 must FUSE together, become one. (I am the

vine, you are the branches, if you abide in me, I will abide in you)

3. Pride caused the Jews to fall, and we should be aware of their example.

a. So, if by their unfaithfulness, we were given the opportunity to become a part of the

family of God, Paul says to think about what will happen when all Israel is reinstated and

reconciled to God? Read vs 15 in TPT we should be excited about this and not be

prideful in it, rather we should seek others to join in the family.

b. Paul makes a point that pride is what keeps us from being grafted in. Pride can also

cause us to be cut off even after we have been grafted in. Vs 22 says God is both kind

and severe. Our only requirement is to have trust in Jesus above ourselves.

c. We are grafted in because of our faith, our faith Christ, is our righteousness. When we

are infused with the Holy Spirit, we also reap the benefits of the FRUITFUL TREE.

4. So why is Paul saying all of this?

a. We are getting ready to enter chapters in which Paul talks about the honor and privilege

we have in being heirs with Christ and because of this how we can walk in

TRANSFORMING POWER! In this Chapter Paul was setting up the understanding that

i. We have a choice to make

ii. When we chose to trust in Jesus that we become fused together with God

iii. That there are benefits to living a life trusting in God even to your descendants.

b. The last several chapters talked about the lack of unity between the Jews and Gentiles,

and the next 4 chapters will talk about how we can live in unity in the body.

FOR EVERYTHING COMES FROM HIM AND EXISTS BY HIS POWER AND IS INTENDED FOR HIS GLORY!

Lesson 10

Romans 12

1. A living sacrifice vs 1 read in the NLT. What things does Paul list that are an acceptable

sacrifice? True worship of God, and the way to know God’s heart

a. Not being like the world

b. Not thinking we are better than we are (and I like to add worse than we are)

c. Learning our gifts and using them

d. REALLY loving people. Real love must be without hypocrisy

i. Honoring others - Ephesians 5:21, Philippians2:3

ii. Showing genuine affection – 1 Peter 2:17, one translation says loving one

another warmly.

iii. Working hard - Colossians 3:23, Titus 2:7-8, Proverbs 16:3

iv. Help those in need – Galatians 6:2, Matthew 5:24

v. Being patient – Ephesians 4:2, 1 Corinthians 13:4

vi. Praying continually 1 Thessalonians 5:17, Ephesians 6:18

vii. Blessing those who persecute you – Matthew 5:44, Luke 6:27

viii. Rejoicing with those who rejoice – be happy when others succeed,

recognize others, give out public praise

ix. Mourning with those who mourn – pray for comfort, give practically, be an

open ear, shoulder, arms

x. Living in harmony, Romans 12:18 WE MAKE THE CHOICE TO LIVE IN

HARMONY

xi. And enjoying the company of regular people – not in relationship because it

benefits you.

2. Why is it difficult to REALLY love others?

a. Love is a choice not a feeling, we like the feeling

i. 1 Corinthians 13 in the word LOVE is an ACTION not a feeling. Again, we love

to receive benefit, because it feels good. But how do we leave others feeling

b. Living out of hurt or the past, instead of living in truth of God’s word. We talked

about living reactively in the book of James

i. Romans 12:19, Ephesians 4:32, God will set all things right, and we can’t

spend our time waiting for him to do it.

ii. Our rest is in HIM, we don’t have to carry the weight of who we are, and

what we have done or what has been done to us. Matthew 11:28-30

c. Being toxic to ourselves, listen to the lies of the enemy and give power to it

i. Hebrews 12:1 (2) strip off every weight that slows us down and the sin that

trips us up. We know sin starts in the mind and thoughts give way to sin.

James 1:4, each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust

(thoughts)


3. How do we become free to love; transform our minds

a. Vs 2, Renewing our minds, Let God Change the way you think! And you will be a new

person! (When the Savior we need becomes the Savior we want)

b. How do we renew our mind? Dr Caroline Leaf states in her book, Switch on Your

Brain, “As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously

direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with

healthy thoughts”

i. Philippians 4:8 Think on THESE things, let’s chose to see God’s image in

everyone

ii. 2 Corinthians 10:5 take every thought captive

iii. Proverbs 23:7 as a man thinks in his heart, so is he “thoughts become the

physical substance of your brain Dr Caroline Leaf

c. Changing our mind isn’t a new concept to Paul in the scriptures but is the central

theme of Jesus first sermon in Matthew 4:17 Repent means to change your mind.

4. Let’s practice.

a. GATHER, become aware of the toxic thought, thoughts going in and out of your

head

b. REFLECT, pin point the negative thought and chose to work on that thought

c. WRITE, draw pictures, write random words whatever pops up in your head, think of

a solution for the toxic thought and write it down

d. REVISIT, pray and then read daily what you wrote and look and see how you can

make changes. Work on healthy thought to replace the negative, make decisions on

how you can move out of the negative thought and replace it with truth using

scripture and thought processes.

e. ACTIVE REACH, use your imagination for the part and see the end result of what you

desire. Recognize Jesus as the solution to the problem and ask him for help in this

exercise.

f. Repeat this one thought for 21 days

5. When we transform our minds, then Paul says we will know what God’s will is for Us. Vs2

which is good and pleasing and perfect.

Lesson 11

Romans 13, 1 Peter 2:17

1. Authority, and God’s view

a. Paul is making the point that we submit to earthly authority because it reflects

God’s glory, some were having trouble submitting to Roman rule.

b. It is God’s will for us to obey those who are in authority over us, but there is NO

authority accept given by God (John 19:10)

i. Helps us to understand our relationship to God

ii. Teaches us humility and submission

c. Obedience to authority is good when it is in line with God’s word Ephesians 6:1-3

i. It will go well with us and we show God’s glory when we live right

ii. Sometimes we must weigh law with the word of God, for example let’s look

at the Story of Daniel and the lion’s den Daniel chapter 6 , even in his refusal

to submit he still showed honor to the king

iii. There are times when we must understand the difference in doing all that

government tells us and following the heart of God, humans sometimes get

it right, God ALWAYS gets it right!

d. Submission to right living brings freedom

i. We don’t have to fear when we do the right things. Chapter 13:3

ii. Our submission to man is not limited by the Lordship of Jesus Luke 12:4-5

iii. Living right brings Glory to God, and peace to us. 1 peter 2:12, 3:16

iv. John 12:32, people are either drawn to Christ or pushed away by how we

act.

2. Here’s the shift in the chapter, indebtedness

a. Some people use this chapter to justify NEVER GOING IN TO DEBT, and while it is

good to not be in debt, this is not the point Paul is trying to make.

b. We should ALWAYS pay people what we owe because that is integrity, if we borrow

we need to give back, take care of what we borrow etc.

c. Paul however is referring to a different kind of debt. God’s law is summed up when

we LOVE, Let’s look at vs 8 So then, what is our obligation or debt to one another?

Do we OWE love to other people? YES

d. What does that mean for people we don’t have a relationship with or even people

who don’t know we exist? We will sum this up at the end of the study

e. Paul brings up the point of submission to those who have authority over us for a few

reasons

i. It brings glory to God in the way we act, we have just gone through how

ii. Paul is paralleling Honor and Love. God’s love transforms us, and how it

changes the way we react to ALL situations we have talked a lot about that

in this study


iii. It shows people whom we don’t have a relationship with, the relationship

we have with the God we serve. It is our testimony to the world.

1. John Piper states that “The great work that Christ did for us on the

cross is past, and the great work that he is doing in us is present.

And the present work is based on the past work, and both are

absolutely essential.” Without the work Christ did for us on the

cross, we would not have the power we need to live the way Paul is

instructing us to live.

f. So let’s look back to Romans 12 How do we show HONOR and LOVE?

• Verse 9, “Let love be genuine.”

• Verse 10: “Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.”

• Verse 13: “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

• Verse 14: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them.”

• Verse 17: “Repay no one evil for evil.”

• Verse 19: “Beloved, never avenge yourselves,

• Verse 20: “If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.”

• Verse 21: “Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.” 3. What does this mean in everyday practical living? How can we love those whom we have

never met or don’t interact with? a. Let’s look back at vs 7 Pay to all what is owed to them. And what do we owe fellow

human beings? Honor and Love. i. Love is a mindset, an attitude, a choice 1 Corinthians 13.

b. Our mindset in ALL we do should be one of Love. So, let’s think about what Paul is saying in the beginning of the chapter. Read vs 1-4 what does that really mean?

i. “each other” does not only refer to Christians in vs 7 but literally EVERYONE. So, what is Paul trying to say to the Christians in Rome and the Christians of today? Consider this…

1. When you pay your taxes, Love should be your mindset 2. When you obey the speed limit, Love should be your mindset 3. When you pay your bills, love should be your mindset 4. When you go to work, love should be your mindset 5. When you check out at Walmart, Love should be your mindset 6. IN ALL YOU DO, Love should be your mindset

ii. When love is our mindset, we fulfill the Law. And the benefit to us is JOY, PEACE and REST.

“LET ALL YOU DO BE MOTIVATED BY LOVE”

Lesson 12

Romans Chapter 14

1. Accept other believers who are weak in the faith

a. Some believe this to be either new believers, new to faith, haven’t read the bible,

haven’t heard teaching on the gospel. Some may also believe it to be a long-time

believer who is a “child” in their understanding, only relies on others to feed them,

one who prefers a certain teacher, or type of teaching and doesn’t listen to many.

i. Timothy 2:5 Study to show yourself approved so that we can RIGHTLY

divide the word of truth

b. I believe more than that though that Paul here is referring to one who is unsettled in

their conviction on a certain issue; to eat or not to eat meat, to worship God on this

day or that day. These who are unsettled can be easily distressed by those who can

be overbearing in their convictions. Vs 20-21 For us living under the new covenant

this is generally doctrinal issues. A set of beliefs, some things are black and white,

but not all things are

i. This sometimes comes because people interpret the word differently, some

hold tighter to certain issues than other that in the fact that we have

different types of churches. we see this when some take pieces of the word

out of context and may hold tight to it literally or too loose and only see it as

figuratively or as a suggestion when it really is a command.

ii. This is some of the issues the church in Rome was having when it came to

following the letter of the law vs living under the new covenant. Remember

our teaching on faith vs works

c. God expects us to be steadfast in our convictions and not easily swayed, Philippians

2:12 but those of us who are should be patient with those who have not and not

look down on them. It says work out our own, not someone elses.

2. In these arguments, the question may be, who is right? In our human nature we think that is

what is important but according to Paul NEITHER is right. In this situation the problem with

the arguing was that it was dividing the church, leading to bitter feelings and a break down

of relationships……in the name of Christ.

a. Vs 19 Arguing tears apart the body but our job is to build it up

b. Vs 6-7 They believe with their whole heart what they are doing is to honor God

c. VS 4 Who are we to judge

3. Again, we should be strong in our conviction and not easily swayed. The word says we must

live out of faith that what we are doing what is right. Vs 22 Blessed are those who don’t feel

guilty for doing something they have decided is right

a. Do all you do out of faith Vs 5, you should be fully convinced because whatever is

NOT from faith is sin vs 22-23 ESV

b. VS 23 James 4:17 To him who knows to do good and does it not

c. Hebrews 11:6 without faith it is impossible to please God


4. We work out our own salvation and not focus on others because we will all stand in

judgement for our own actions not the actions of others.

a. Vs 11-12 shows that we will all give an account for what WE did not what someone

in our church did, or our kids did, or our friends did.

b. We cannot control other people we can only control what we do.

5. So how do we respond when others don’t hold the same beliefs we do? I have heard people

use the statement it doesn’t matter what others think, I only stand in judgement of God. But

what does His word say about that?

a. VS 15 IF what you do causes another believer to be distressed (sorrow, pain or

anxiety) by your doing it, and you do it anyway, you are NOT acting out of love. And

if we are not acting out of Love we are NOT fulfilling the requirement of the Law.

b. VS 22 Keep it between you and God (tattoo story)

i. That doesn’t mean sin in private, go back to VS 22-23

ii. This also does not mean that we become people pleasers. Galatians 1:9-10

we are going to study more on that in the next chapter of Romans.

c. vs 19 Let us Aim for harmony, we can only do that when Love is the mindset

d. VS. 17 says the kingdom of God is a life of goodness, peace and joy in the holy spirit

(We should be fruit bearers)

e. 2 Timothy 2:23-24, our aim is to teach. Teaching is not arguing to prove who is right.

f. We should also have an attitude of being teachable Proverbs 13:10

i. 1 Corinthians 8:2 anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really

know very much

ii. Proverbs 3:5-7

6. Paul says to decide (we have a choice) to live in a way that you will not cause another

Lesson 13

Romans 15-164

1. Reviewing Paul’s reason for writing to the church in Rome. Read out of the message

translation

a. His desire was to help them grow in love of God and love for people. Romans 1:8-12

b. He wrote the Letter because he couldn’t get there in person. Romans 1:13-15

c. His goal was to teach about unity and harmony in the body as well as put an end to

the faith vs works disagreements. Romans 1:16-17

2. Paul could not have spoken so boldly if he were an approval junkie. His desire was to do the

work of Christ, regardless of what others thought of him, he was audacious. As we read his

writings, we sometimes think it sounds harsh but as we read on we see his passion and love

for others and he how his goal is to help them to understand the difference Christ can and

will make in our lives, I am not sure I could do the same. This is a struggle area for me.

a. Romans 1:18 He get’s right into the reason for his letter. God’s anger at sin, and

leads into God’s faithfulness and our redemption from sin through Christ in Chapter

2 and 3 and then he begins to drive home the message that faith is our access to this

salvation through Christ not works starting in chapter 4. He then drives home the

point that when we truly get ahold of the walking in faith mentality, walking in love

with other people isn’t so hard. Romans 5:1-5

b. We saw some BOLD language in the book of Romans about the importance of right

living and how when we live walking in harmony with the Holy Spirit, our desire to

fulfill flesh desires are weakened and we become free from the law of sin Roman 7

c. One of the most important things I have personally taken away from this is that it is

by grace through faith that we are not only brought into right standing with God,

but out of that also flows down right standing with others. This is an area where I

have struggled.

d. Through the book of Romans, we see Paul’s desire to please God is intense but he

also shares the truth in a uniquely loving way.

3. Pleasing God and Pleasing man, what is our motive?

a. Yes, pleasing God is more important than pleasing man however our attitude must

also be one of peace, we are called to live at peace with others. Romans 12:18

b. We also know that we chose to do has direct impact on others and we must be

sensitive to how we leave them feeling. 1 Corinthians 13, Romans

c. The problem is when pleasing man, causes us to sin. Here are some examples.

i. Lying to get noticed, or not telling the truth out of fear

ii. Peer pressure, falling into things to get the approval of others

iii. Doing anything out of fear, fear is the opposite of love

iv. Doing things to exalt self rather than God

d. As with other things in life, even our desire to do right can get twisted and the

desire that may seem right becomes something we use to satisfy a flesh desire. Just


like in the many examples of Jesus encounters with Religious people. Even Paul

explains how he viewed the law and placed it over God is some ways. Even though

he thought it right, he could not see the grace in front of him until his encounter on

the road to Damascus

i. We can quickly go from how does God see me, to, how are other’s viewing

me, and this leads to skewed view of ourselves. Ever view yourself by what

you think another person’s perception is? This leads to a vicious cycle of

becoming an approval junkie. So how do we find balance? How do we

become free of worrying more about what man thinks than what God

thinks, again this has been a huge struggle area for me.

ii. Sometimes the desire for approval and fear of rejection comes out of our

past hurts and experiences. We have “learned” it is important to be liked or

admired by others. It makes us feel good to have this approval.

4. What are the two factors that cause us to become approval junkies

a. Desire for approval

i. Seeking approval of man rather than God

ii. What does Jesus say about seeking man’s approval Matthew 6:16-18,

Matthew 6:1-4 Jesus used some pretty bold language too!

b. Fear of rejection

i. Seeking acceptance from man rather than God

ii. Jesus was rejected by man, Isaiah 53:3, John 15:18

5. How can we overcome being approval junkies?

a. By knowing the truth Hebrews 13:5-6

i. We have talked before about self-evaluation and asking God to reveal to us

what we are carrying in our hearts just like David did. Search me and know

my heart oh God psalms 139:23-24

ii. Nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus Roman 8:38

and perfect love cast out all fear, 1 John 4:18

iii. Let’s look at the list of who we are in Christ. When our identity is secure, we

desire the approval and acceptance of man less because we know we are

loved, accepted by God.

6. So, if we are please God, what does it take become a God pleaser

a. Faith, without faith it is impossible to please God Hebrews 11:6

b. Walking with Him, and sanctification Ephesians 5:8-11

c. Our cooperation Philippians 2:12-13

d. Seeking heavenly wisdom, doing good works or becoming fruit bearing Ephesians

2:10, Colossians 1:9-10, Hebrews 13:16

e. Worship and a thankful heart Hebrews 13:15 Hebrews 12:28

f. Godly ambition 2 Corinthians 5:9-10

ROMANS 5:1-8


There are many, many promises of God in Scripture. In each promise, God

pledges that something will (or will not) be done or given or come to pass.

These are not flippant, casual promises such as we often make; these

promises of God are rock-solid, unequivocal commitments made by God

Himself. Because God is faithful, the recipients of the divine promises can

have full assurance that what God has pledged will indeed be realized

(Numbers 23:19).

Here are just a few of the promises that God has made:

Promises of God in the Old Testament.

God promised to bless Abraham and, through his descendants, the whole

world (Genesis 12:2–3). This promise, called the Abrahamic Covenant,

pointed to the coming Messiah for whom Abraham looked (John 8:56).

God promised Israel to be their God and make them His people (Leviticus

26:12–13). Old Testament history is teeming with examples of God fulfilling

this promise.

God promised that if we search for Him we will find Him (Deuteronomy 4:29).

He is not playing hard-to-get. “Our God is near us whenever we pray to him”

(Deuteronomy 4:7).

God promised protection for His children (Psalm 121). He was the vigilant

watchman over all Israel.

God promised that His love will never fail (1 Chronicles 16:34). He is faithful in

every way.

God promised Israel that their sin could be forgiven, their prosperity restored,

and their nation healed (2 Chronicles 7:14). Repentance opened the road to

fellowship and blessing.

God, under the terms of the Mosaic Covenant, promised prosperity to Israel

for obedience and destruction for disobedience (Deuteronomy 30:15–18).

Unfortunately, Israel eventually chose to disobey, and the nation was

destroyed by Assyria and Babylon.


God promised blessing for all who will delight themselves in His Word (Psalm

1:1–3). Simple faith has its rewards.

Promises of God in the New Testament.

God promised salvation to all who believe in His Son (Romans 1:16–17).

There is no greater blessing than the free gift of God’s salvation.

God promised that all things will work out for good for His children (Romans

8:28). This is the broader picture that keeps us from being dismayed by

present circumstances.

God promised comfort in our trials (2 Corinthians 1:3–4). He has a plan, and

one day we will be able to share the comfort we receive.

God promised new life in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). Salvation is the

beginning of a brand-new existence.

God promised every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Whereas, in

the Old Testament, Israel had the promise of physical blessing, the church

today has been promised spiritual blessings “in the heavenly realms.” Our

inheritance is reserved for us (1 Peter 1:4).

God promised to finish the work He started in us (Philippians 1:6). God does

nothing in half measures. He started the work in us, and He will be sure to

complete it.

God promised peace when we pray (Philippians 4:6–7). His peace is

protection. It will “guard your hearts and your minds in Christ.”

God promised to supply our needs (Matthew 6:33; Philippians 4:19). Not that

we get everything we want, but our needs will be taken care of. We are more

valuable than the birds, and our Heavenly Father feeds them (Matthew 6:26).

Jesus’ promises in the Gospels.

Jesus promised rest (Matthew 11:28–30). Burdens are lifted at Calvary.


TIPS TO BEING A GOOD ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER When you think of an accountability relationship, picture someone running alongside you in a marathon. Eventually, you are going to get tired and want to slow down or stop. But there is a reason you will run longer and harder than you would expect — that reason is your running partner. Their presence, their encouragement, their accountability will push you to do more than you thought possible. Having a literal running partner is a great strategy for finishing a marathon, but it is all the more valuable in this race called life. We need someone (or multiple someone’s) who will be there to keep us going when we spiritually tire. We need someone who will push us to grow. We need someone who will help us become the godly women we strive to be. We need what we often call an “accountability partner.” But what should this practically look like? Here are 10 quick tips to help you choose the best accountability partner, and make the most of your time with her.

#1) Find someone who won’t let you off the hook. If you are hoping your accountability partner will actually hold you accountable (which seems like a reasonable goal!) it’s counterproductive to pick someone who will let all your shortcomings slide. You need to enlist someone who takes godliness serious, and loves you enough to care about your godliness. You need someone who is willing to call out your sin and push you when you need it.

#2) Define your goals. You need to know what you are shooting for if you are going to make progress. Furthermore, your accountability partner needs to know what you are shooting for. Using measurable language and concrete goals, communicate what you hope to accomplish (i.e., “I am seeking to not complain in my heart when my kids….” or “I am working to add 10 minutes to my daily prayer time, so my prayer time should total….” or “I plan to read 1 godly living book each month.”) #3) Commit to honesty. Accountability is only beneficial if you are telling the truth about your life. Your very first accountability interactions should be very straightforward in regards to the current status of your strengths and weaknesses. When your partner has a clear picture of your typical struggles, they can encourage you where you need it most. More than that, they can rejoice with you when they see how much you grow in the coming months. To put it simply, it is helpful for your partner to know where you are starting, not just where you are heading. And it goes without saying, you should continue to be candid about your progress (or lack thereof). Accountability is pointless if the facts are not being discussed.

#4) Connect regularly. Nowadays there are so many ways to connect with people: texts, phone calls, emails, and yes, even face-to-face. Many people carry out their accountability relationship combining these options. Most importantly, accountability needs to be regular, and it needs to be through a medium of communication you can’t hide behind. If relevant details will be skipped via email or text, then you should talk on the phone or meet up. I think most people would say it’s best to meet in person regularly, and follow up often with something quick, like texting. This combines the benefit of “in person” communication with constant encouragement and accountability. Whatever you choose, make sure it is regular and fosters real accountability. #5) Speak in unmasked language. When you give an account of your progress, state things so they are understood. “Prayer is not going well” could mean you are getting distracted in your hour-long prayer, or it could mean you haven’t prayed for 8 days. Be specific and clear (if you want real accountability).


#6) Ensure accountability touches all areas of life. We all have certain weaknesses. Most accountability will focus on those specific issues. But that doesn’t mean we won’t be tempted to falter in other areas–in fact, that is where sin might sneak up on us most. One suggestion to avoid blind spots is to schedule a time to get together every few months to discuss a wide range of issues (not just the typical struggles). Discuss spiritual disciplines, church attendance, ministry involvement, financial stewardship, personal holiness, relational issues, and whatever else is “going on.” What a shame it would be if we focused so much on one or two areas while simultaneously failing in other areas that weren’t on anyone’s radar.

#7) Make prayer a key component. (AND SPEAKING SCRIPTURE OVER NOT AT) If there was one thing accountability partners should do (besides asking personal questions) it would be to pray for one another. God is the one who enables godly living, thus asking for God’s help is the greatest thing we can do for each other. Faithful prayer will also foster genuine concern for our sister, which will likely prompt more faithful encouragement and accountability.

#8) Forget what it’s “supposed” to look like. Personally, I picture the ideal accountability being a 2-way accountability relationship where the couple has an uninterrupted meeting at Starbucks for 1.5 hours every week. Maybe it’s just my stage of life, but this is not the reality. Of course, there is benefit to having that type of consistent face-to-face undistracted time, but the heart of accountability can be accomplished while looking quite a bit different. It may be that much of your accountability is over the phone, or is with children running around. Or perhaps you might have more than one accountability partner. For example, there may be a sensitive issue in which it’s most appropriate to talk to a particular friend who can help, while a different friend would be better for pushing you in your spiritual disciplines. Or you might see the need to be held accountable by someone who doesn’t currently need your accountability. While mutual accountability is a great set up, there are times for you to reach out to a more mature, godly woman to help you move forward in a very specific way. Ultimately you know what areas you need encouragement in–and you need to figure out the best way to have the accountability you need.

#9) Be the kind of accountability partner you want. If we want someone to care about our life, to spend time asking us questions, praying for us, encouraging us — we better be willing to do the same for someone else! Even if the person who is holding you accountable has someone else holding them accountable, there is someone out there you could be investing in! Regardless of who it is, be sure to love that person in the same way you want to be loved (Matthew 22:39). #10) Don’t be afraid to change up your accountability. Just as there are various seasons in life, there will likely be various types of accountability needed. More encouragement may be needed during specific seasons, so you may need to seek out extra help. Or certain accountability relationships may prove difficult to practically maintain, so you might need to find something more realistic. You might also find that some accountability partners no longer hold you accountable the way you need it. Unless an honest conversation solves this problem, it is likely better to find a different person (or an additional person) to keep you accountable. Don’t sacrifice good accountability on the altar of not hurting someone’s feelings.

Jesus promised abundant life to those who follow Him (John 10:10). Following

Jesus brings us more spiritual fulfillment than we could have anticipated. We

leave boring behind.

Jesus promised eternal life to those who trust Him (John 4:14). The Good

Shepherd also promised to hold us securely: “No one will snatch them out of

my hand” (John 10:28).

Jesus promised His disciples power from on high (Acts 1:8). In this power,

they “turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6, ESV).

Jesus promised that He will return for us (John 14:2–3). From then on, we will

be with Him always.

There are many more promises of God that could be listed. All of them find

their ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, “the radiance of God’s glory”

(Hebrews 1:3). “No matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’

in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20).
