Primary students from across Australia got to hear the inside story about the journey of Little Lunch from an idea on a page to an international award-winning TV series. The author and illustrator of the original Little Lunch books, Danny Katz and Mitch Vane, answered thoughtful and insightful questions from students in South Australia, Western Australia, New South Wales and Victoria as part of a live ACTF webinar. Danny delved into the writing process behind the Little Lunch books and how the stories his own children would tell about what happened at school were the inspiration for the Little Lunch characters and stories. Mitch demonstrated how she illustrates the Little Lunch books to complement Danny’s writing and bring the characters to life. Danny and Mitch gave a fascinating insight into how the books were then turned into the successful TV series by Robyn Butler and Wayne Hope and the changes that were required for the screen version and the part they both played.

If you didn’t get a chance to participate in the live webinar you can view the edited video on our ACTF YouTube Channel. By selecting ‘SHOW MORE’ under the video you can jump straight to the particular question you’d like to hear Danny and Mitch answer.

MY:24 APP – INTRODUCING STUDENTS TO DOCUMENTARY FILM-MAKING

Senior students at Indooroopilly State High School in Brisbane have been using the MY:24 App as a simple launching pad for more ambitious documentary film-making. The App provided the students with a structured template for making a short documentary that encouraged them to move onto longer-form projects.

Moneth Montemayor, Senior Film Teacher, saw both the MY:24 TV series and the MY:24 App as a great introduction to well-planned and thoughtful documentary film-making for her students. “To get my students into the idea that story is king I introduced an episode of MY:24 and got them to analyse what they liked about the format.” Once her students downloaded the MY:24 App they were able to think carefully about the importance of voice-overs, archival footage, re-enactments and interviews in creating a compelling short documentary.

“I gave my senior students minimal instruction on how to use the App, yet they were able to seamlessly create a structured 3-minute documentary within a 60-minute period. I’m sure with a little more scaffolding, upper-primary and lower secondary students would also be able to easily create their own documentaries.” Moneth ventured.

Year 12 student Brydie saw the MY:24 App as ‘training wheels’ for more adventurous projects, “The App does the job of the editor for you, which allows you to concentrate on being the director and cinematographer. It’s a starting point if you want to get into editing and I’ve gone onto using more advanced editing software to make more ambitious documentaries after using the MY:24 App.” Fellow Year 12 student Caitlin observed, “The structure of the App meant we didn’t go off tangent. It made it interesting and we really had to think about what we were including to ensure it was valuable.”

As a Film Teacher Moneth Montemayor found the short-form nature of MY:24 TV series incredibly useful in her teaching. “The MY:24 episodes are nice and short (12-minutes), which allows ample time to screen them in class and then have time to analyse and critique the episode with students.” The App then provided the impetus for the students to refine their skills in terms of editing and cinematography, which allowed them to create better productions in their mini-documentaries.

COMEDY SCRIPTWRITING WORKSHOPS FOR UPPER PRIMARY STUDENTS – REGISTER NOW FOR TERM 3

The ACTF, in partnership with ACMI Education is excited to announce the return of the popular Comedy Scriptwriting workshops for upper-primary students to be held in July and August. The workshops are delivered online allowing primary classes anywhere in Australia to participate.

“This model of delivery is the best online learning we have done to date.”Cheryl Torpey, Principal, Tempy PS, VIC

In the three-part online workshops, Year 5 & 6 students are provided with an opportunity to connect with scriptwriting experts to write and share their very own sketch comedy scripts.

Using the award-winning Sketch-O-Matic website (inspired by the hit comedy TV series You’re Skitting Me), students develop reading, viewing and listening skills in tasks aligned with the Australian Curriculum.

In the first workshop, students are encouraged to deconstruct their own knowledge of sketch comedy and build an understanding of its purpose. Students engage with the You’re Skitting Me TV series as a visual text for enjoyment and analysis.

In the second workshop, a special guest presenter joins the panel to talk through their experience of being a writer for Australian television. While in the final workshop, students apply their knowledge by using the Sketch-O-Matic website to develop their sketch idea into a comedy script.

Cheryl Torpey from Tempy Primary School in Victoria had her students participate in last year’s scriptwriting workshops and said the biggest highlight was watching students discover a different writing genre while having a laugh in class.

“To incorporate television, digital software and expert guests to facilitate the learning and then for students to complete a piece of writing was outstanding,” Cheryl noted.

“Having tasks to complete during the sessions was also excellent, not to mention the oral communication skills developed for even the most reluctant participants. Students listened carefully to others and took the responsibility of providing feedback to other students from the different schools very seriously. This model of delivery is the best online learning we have done to date,” Cheryl observed.

The cost of the three-part workshops is $50 per class (30 students max), at a subsidised price which includes subscription access to the online sketch comedy writing tool the Sketch-O-Matic, plus You’re Skitting Me Series 1 & 2 on DVD.

The event is held online using the web-based Zoom video-conferencing software which is free. Support and technical assistance will be provided to all participating schools.

Bookings are essential and places are limited. For further enquiries or to register your class in the three-part session, please email [email protected] or phone (03) 9200 5522.
