Girls Basketball Team Congratulations and commiserations to the girls’ basketball team who were defeated by Hillview Public School last week! Mrs Webeck informed me that our girls were most gracious in defeat and that the girls were still upbeat and happy on the journey home. Well done girls - it is easier to win well than it is to take defeat well.

Fathers’ Day Stall The Fathers’ Day Stall will be held outside the library this Thursday. Gifts will range in price from $2 to $5. Kellie Warwick would love some volunteers to come along and help to sell the gifts. Please help out if you can.

P&C Meeting The next meeting of the Gloucester Public School P&C will be held in the school library this Thursday commencing at 7pm. It has been moved forward by one week due to the Bucketts of Talent concert which is set down for the following Thursday night. Please note that the parent information night on The Literacy Continuum is scheduled from 5.30pm until 6.30pm. It was hoped that parents

attending the information session might consider staying on for the P&C meeting.

Infants’ Sports Carnival

Friday 31st August Our infants’ (Kinder, Years 1 & 2) sports carnival will be held at the Rec Centre/Little A’s oval. If you are able to assist at the carnival please let me know as soon as possible as we would love some parents to help out with races and activities. Students are to wear sports uniforms, bring their recess and lunch (if not ordering) and plenty of water to drink. Don’t forget hats and sunscreen. Students will be walking down from school at approximately 9.15am to arrive at approximately 9.30am. Running races will be in the morning followed by activities in the afternoon. Students will break for recess at approximately 11.00am and again for lunch at approximately 12.30pm. Lunches can be ordered from the school canteen before 9.00am and they will be delivered to the oval in time for lunch at 12.30. It is hoped the carnival will finish at approximately 2.15pm. Parents and carers wishing to take their child/ren after the carnival please indicate on the slip attached to this newsletter and have your child give the slip to his/her classroom teacher BEFORE, or ON the carnival day. Students not leaving with their parents will walk back to school for the usual dismissal routine after the carnival is over. If you have any questions, please ask. Mirabai Stockwell (on behalf of the infants’ crew)

Book Week: What a wonderful day we had last Friday!!! Everyone looked great and the posters are now hanging proudly in the library. There are so many people to say thank you to that I could take up most of the newsletter so I am going to say thank you to everyone for their help and support, it makes the day very much worthwhile! The book fair was a huge success and the library will be receiving about $2000 worth of new books due to your generous purchases. The books have been ordered and Scholastic informs me that I should have them by the end of next week. I thought it would be this week but due to the number of schools having book fairs in Book Week, orders will take a little longer. I wish to take this opportunity to say thank you all for your patience and understanding with the ordering system this year. It appears to have worked well and it means that everyone will receive their books at the same time. Premier’s Reading Challenge: If your child has not completed the challenge and would still like to do so, his/her list of books needs to be to me no later than Wednesday so that I can finalise them. This will be the last chance, so please encourage them. Leanne Simes Teacher Librarian

Tournament of the Minds Last Saturday, eleven students made their way up to Westport High School in Port Macquarie to compete in the NSW Regional Finals of Tournament of the Minds. The students competed in two challenges; a long term challenge that they had been working on for the last six weeks at school and a spontaneous challenge. The students should all be very proud of their efforts both on the day and the six weeks beforehand, using their recess and lunch times to work on their challenge. They represented the school in a mature manner and all had a great day. Thank you to all the parents for driving up to Port Macquarie for the day, the students wouldn’t have been able to compete in the Tournament without your support. Hopefully we will find out the results soon. Amy Sansom Team A: Laura Dunlop, Jenna Davis, Emily Cameron, Alice Flanagan, Keely Simes and Kyra Edstein (unfortunately Kyra was absent on the day of the tournament). Team B: Julian Davis, Stephen Hester, Cameron Dunlop, Ethan Bird, Alistair Best, Hayden Dangerfield and Caide Harford (unfortunately Caide was absent on the day of the tournament). (Photos below)

Year 6 Canberra Excursion – Two weeks to go! We have had a number of short meetings in the lead up to our excursion to pass on information about the trip. Further final information will come home in the coming week regarding departure times and a final itinerary for parents. Mrs Moore, the Year 6 students and myself will also be accompanied by David Cox, father of Lincoln and Rhys, who has kindly volunteered to assist us on the excursion as an additional supervising adult. Thanks, Dave. Again, if you feel you need to clarify anything, please see myself or Mrs Moore before the excursion date. Please don’t leave any questions you may have, unanswered or assumed. Ask us! Only 13 more sleeps to go! Rod Maggs - Assistant Principal.

Milo Blast Off Cricket at Tuncurry Our school will be sending a team of boys and girls to participate in a Cricket NSW development day at Tuncurry this Thursday 30th August. Due to some re-arrangements to professional learning opportunities for staff, I will not be there to coordinate the day. Ms Liz Davis will be accompanying and managing the students at Tuncurry on Thursday. Thanks for stepping in, Liz. If your child is participating, he/she should have returned a note explaining arrangements for transport. Please ensure you are at school by 8.00am sharp so we can organise students for travel. Thank you so much to those travelling parents who have offered to assist our teams by taking other students. You make these events possible for our kids! Please remember to provide current licence and registration details with our fantastic office staff prior to the day. Have a great day of cricket and fun! Rod Maggs - Assistant Principal.

Year 6 Orientation visit by Gloucester High School A number of Gloucester High School staff and students will pay a visit to our Year 6 students next Monday 3rd September at 1.30pm. This is an opportunity for them to hear about life at high school and to learn about some of the amazing experiences that Gloucester High provides for their students from Year 7 through to Year 12. Students will meet their 2013 year advisor and have an opportunity to ask questions about their big move to secondary education at the end of the year. Rod Maggs - Assistant Principal. Basketball: Last Wednesday the girls’ basketball team travelled to Tamworth to play round 6 of the PSSA knockout competition. The team was completely outclassed by a very aggressive side which has obviously played a number of games together. The girls did the school and themselves proud and were gracious in defeat but very keen to give the game their best shot. Jenna Davis had a never say die attitude that inspired the rest of the girls. Tayla Predebon and Tahnee Yates were the ball carriers and tried their hardest to get the ball into our end. Tayla top scored for the day. Maddie Higgins, Taneeshka Strudwick, Mel Thomson and Alice Flanagan tried so hard to defend and steal the ball. Well played girls - you were a pleasure to take away to represent the school. I would like to thank the parents who have encouraged the team and driven us to the stadiums. Thanks for the dedication and support. Bettianne Webeck.

Thanks Mrs Webeck on a coaching job well done!

Canteen News: Thank you, most sincerely, to everyone who helped to serve the morning tea on Friday! Thank you, also, to the very talented cooks,(STAFF & PARENTS) who supplied the delicious goodies. It shows the wonderful spirit we are so lucky to have in our school community. IMPORTANT INFORMATION! NEW CANTEEN POLICY! I'm sorry to say that, owing to the dishonesty of a few students, ICE BLOCKS ARE NO LONGER TO BE ORDERED ON LUNCH BAGS! IF STUDENTS WISH TO HAVE AN ICE BLOCK AT LUNCH TIME THEY MUST BRING MONEY TO THE CANTEEN AND BUY IT OVER THE COUNTER. IF AN ORDER FOR AN ICE BLOCK IS WRITTEN ON A LUNCH BAG, I WILL RETURN THE MONEY TO THE STUDENT SO THAT HE/SHE CAN BUY ONE FROM THE CANTEEN. Sharon Osborne, Canteen Manager.
