Aberdeen Whisky Festival 2013

Welcome!

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the Second Annual Aberdeen Whisky Festival. The Aber-deen University Malt Whisky Society decided to host the first Festival last year as a celebration and exhibition of Scotland’s national drink! It was such a fun day, with people learning more about whisky and trying ones they’d never tried before, that we decided we needed to do it again! The Festival last year was actually awarded the AUSA Society award for ‘Best Event’, so fingers crossed this year will live up to expectations.

The society also won the ‘Big Heart’ award for charitable contributions, as we believe not only in enjoying fine whiskies, but helping others too. Whisky is the water of life, or the ‘uisge beatha’, and therefore it only seemed appropriate that this year we support Just a Drop, a water charity striving to bring clean drinking water to people worldwide. Therefore all proceeds from today will be donated to Just a Drop to help them continue their fan-tastic work.

So now all that is left to say is a very big thank you to all the companies, brands and distilleries participating in the Second Whisky Festival, to all the businesses that helped with ticket sales, such as The St Machar Bar, the Grill, Odd Bins and The Aberdeen Whisky Shop, and finally to all of you for com-ing along today!

Have a wonderful day!

Slainte Mhath,

Clare Hutchison

President of the Aberdeen University Malt Whisky Society 2012-2013.

For the majority of us in the UK, we only have to turn on the tap to get clean water and we barely think twice about where it comes from. But day after day, thousands of people in developing countries – typically women and young children – have to walk miles to collect it.

The collected water is often filthy and puts children especially at risk of con-tracting deadly diseases. In fact, diarrhoea, from poor sanitation and dirty water, kills more children under the age of five than measles, HIV and malaria combined.

The international water aid charity, Just a Drop, delivers clean water projects to some of the poorest regions in the world. We build wells, hand-pumps, dams, pipelines and latrines and since 1998 we have reached an estimated 1.5 million people from Afghanistan to Zambia.

10 year old Eva, from Kenya, is just one of the children Just a Drop has sup-ported. She explained, “Sometimes, after walking for five hours, we would reach the river only to be chased away by an elephant. We would have to return to the village empty-handed. Even when we were able to fetch the water, the distance was so far, I would often miss half of my lessons by the time I got to school.”

With help from Just a Drop, Eva’s village and school now has access to a well, which provides clean water for the whole community. One of the women, Mama Nico, explained the difference it has made: “Our village is now full of happy faces! The children can go to school and no longer have to walk 30km just to collect water. We are growing potatoes and tomatoes now which are a great addition to our diet, and Eva’s mother is able to resume her small bead making business.”

We would like to draw your attentiont to the following:

A relaxation area is available in the far Linklater Room. You are able to access this via the outside only while Masterclasses are in progress. At all other times you can walk through the near Linklater rooms to

reach this area.

Water is provided during the day. If you cannot find any, please do not hesitate to ask any society volunteers wearing a navy polos or

t-shirt.

We will be hosting three masterclasses. Tickets for these are on sale at the main information desk in the foyer of Elphinstone Hall for £8 or £6 for students. Information on these is available at the main desk or

from any of the volunteers.

A raffle will be taking place during the event so keep a look out for committee members selling tickets. All pro-

ceeds go to Just a Drop.

We would like to remind you to drink responsibly.
