Maputo

The Inhaca Island, at a 15-minute flight from Maputo, is considered World Biological Heritage because of the magnificent multicolor coral reefs and the number of rare species of fish to be found in the waters. It has mangroves, marvelous beaches, wild life and luxurious vegetation.

- The House of Iron, transported to Maputo from the Universal Exhibition of Paris; Av. Samora Machel. - The botanical gardens of Tunduru on Av Samora Machel with its doorway built in the Manueline style; - The Fort of Nª Senhora da Conceição situated in Praça 25 de Junho which has been turned into a military museum; - The Central Market, situated in Av. 25 de Setembro, is known as “Bazar da Baixa” and it was built in 1901; it supplies fresh fruit, vegetables and herbs and a wide variety of handicraft can be purchased there; - The Catholic Cathedral built in 1944 is situated in Praça da Independência and facing the Centro Cultural Franco-Moçambicano; - The Mosque, built at the beginning of the XX century; - The Railway Station built at the beginning of the XX century, in “Praça dos Trabalhadores” in side of CFM. - The “Yellow House” in Rua Consiglieri Pedroso was the seat of the first Colonial Government; today it is the Money Museum.

- The Natural History Museum, a gothic style building in Praça Travessia do Zambeze, displays many of the animal species natural to Mozambique and a collection, considered unique in the world, of elephant fetuses showing the different months of gestation; -The National Art Museum with collections of art and sculptures of Mozambique artists is in Av. Ho Chi Min; - The National Geology Museum, in Av. de 24 Julho; - The Revolution Museum, in Av. 24 de Julho; - The Fish Market, in Av. da Marginal; - Inhaca Island, 15 minutes from Maputo by air or 3 hours by boat, has magnificent coral reefs and the interesting Marine Biology Museum; - The “Pequenos Libombos” Dam, built on the River Umbelúzi in Boane; - The Maputo special Reserve, south of the city, on the way to Ponta do Ouro, is famous for its elephant herds and the bands of flamingos to be seen on the lakes that have formed near the coast.

Beaches

- Catembe, the place where you can get the most fabulous view of Maputo City; - Inhaca Island, where there are two beaches Farol and Santa Maria and the “Ilha dos Portugueses” famous for underwater diving and coral reefs; - Macaneta Beach, with its b waves and white sand can be reached by boat or by road via Marracuene; - Ponta do Ouro Beach, at the most southern point of the country, 117 Km from Maputo, can be reached travelling overland by jeep, or by road from South Africa; - Malongane Beach, 5 Km north of Ponta do Ouro.

Health

When there Precautions should be taken to avoid mosquito bites and extra care taken when drinking water and eating local tropical food so as to minimize the risk of intestinal upsets so frequent in tropical climates. Should medical assistance be required, well-equipped clinics are available. Although local water is reasonably safe, visitors are advised to drink the good quality bottled water.

Before going All visitors must be in possession of a certificate declaring that they have been vaccinated against yellow fever.
