New Books: Changes to subscriptions in 2019

We wanted to share with you some changes that will take effect from the March edition of New Books. We have reviewed the subscription levels of New Books against the number of active library members who use it to update their book selection list. We have identified that a large proportion of library members use our preference service rather than select books themselves.

What does this mean for you? If you have contacted RNIB in the past year to add titles or authors to your book selection list, then you will still receive New Books. If RNIB Library select your titles for you then you will no longer receive New Books after this edition.

The quickest and earliest way to receive New Books is by email which is sent out in advance of the hard copy formats. If you would prefer to switch to email to get New Books, please let us know.

If you find from March that you no longer receive New Books but wish to do so, please contact Helpline on 0303 123 9999 or email [email protected] who can arrange for your subscription to be reinstated.

For organisations such as libraries and schools we will be introducing a small charge for New Books from May onwards. There will continue to be no charge for individual library members.

The newest and simplest way to read RNIB Talking Books – EasyReader

There’s now a new and much easier way to read audio books from the RNIB Overdrive service. EasyReader is a free app that you can download to your phone or tablet which is available for both iOS and Android users.

Download EasyReader to your device and then login to the RNIB Overdrive library with your existing credentials (you will only need to do this once). You can then browse the full Talking Book library by ‘your checkouts’, ‘new releases’ and ‘most popular’. Alternatively, you can search for a specific title or author. Once you’ve chosen a book, you can ‘borrow’ and ‘download’ with a single button. You can even listen to an audio preview, to make sure you’ve chosen wisely. In addition, returning a title is just as simple. The EasyReader app has been created by leading AT specialists Dolphin Computer Access, so it’s fully accessible and compatible with VoiceOver and TalkBack. The feedback from our readers about using EasyReader is very positive:

“I just wanted to say, one word ... wow!!! The RNIB Overdrive experience is so seamless and effortless ....it's superb!” Will “It’s perfectly accessible & ridiculously easy to use – I am all over it!” Stacey Rowe, RNIB

Finally, if you also subscribe to RNIB Newsagent, you can use EasyReader to effortlessly read your newspapers and magazines. Search the app store for ‘Dolphin EasyReader’ or visit yourdolphin.com/easyreaderapp for the download links.
