Mayo Clin Proc, February 1995, Vol 70 Scope of Book: This book discusses the successful management of patients with ALS, both in the home and in the hospital. Contents: This textbook provides an excellent review of previous and ongoing therapeutic trials and includes a discussion of unortho- dox treatments. The chapters on nursing care are excellent. They are written by persons who have had extensive personal experience in the care of patients with ALS and thus can authoritatively outline the necessary adaptations that allow patients to cope optimally with the disease. The role of hospital care, life-support systems, and legal and ethical questions that arise during the course of the disease are discussed. The particular problems of the caregiver are recog- nized, and the need for psychosocial support for both the patient and the caregiver is emphasized. Strengths: This book is one of few texts that outline in detail the information needed by physicians, other health-care professionals, patients, caregivers, and family members to improve the quality of life of a patient with ALS. Deficiencies: Clinical descriptions, diagnostics, and etiologic fac- tors are covered superficially. Recommended Audience: This practical guide will be indispens- able for those who care for patients with ALS, including, in most instances, the patient and family. Overall Grading: **** Donald W. Mulder, M.D., Department of Neurology (Emeritus), Mayo Clinic Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota Laparoscopic Surgery, edited by Garth H. Ballantyne, Patrick F. Leahy, and Irvin M. Modlin, 710 pp, with illus, $195, Philadelphia, W. B. Saunders Company (telephone: 800-545-2522), 1994, ISBN 0-7216-6648-5 Type of Book: A multiauthored text that focuses on the rapidly evolving field of minimally invasive surgery. Scope of Book: An in-depth textbook and atlas of laparoscopic surgical techniques that covers all the common, and many of the less common, minimally invasive surgical procedures in practice during 1994. Contents: The book is divided into eight sections. Section I deals with scientific fundamentals and extensively reviews potential complications. Section II addresses general laparoscopic surgical techniques. Sections III through VI are devoted to specific organ systems, including the upper and lower gastrointestinal and biliary tracts, and miscellaneous procedures. Section VII is the surgical atlas. Section VIII focuses on the key elements for successful postdoctoral training in this highly technical and often controversial field. Strengths: The text is surprisingly up to date. Quality contribu- tions from national and international authorities help establish the credibility of this work. The chapters are well referenced. The surgical atlas portion is especially detailed and useful. The simplis- tic black-and-white line drawings that accompany the chapters are clear and concise and make this text a useful instructional guide. Deficiencies: Several of the color slides are of only average quality. Overlap of information is considerable but reinforces information. BOOK REVIEWS 203 Recommended Audience: General surgeons, colorectal surgeons, thoracic surgeons, surgical residents, gynecologists, and urologists. In addition, this book should be in medical school libraries. Overall Grading: **** Geoffrey B. Thompson, M.D., Department of Gastroenterologic and General Surgery, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Rochester, Minnesota Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation, edited by Martin J. Tobin, 1,300 pp, with illus, $139, New York, McGraw- Hill (telephone: 212-512-6337),1994, ISBN 0-07-064943-X Type of Book: A multiauthored text that covers all the clinical aspects of mechanical ventilation. Scope of Book: A comprehensive, well-written, up-to-date guide on mechanical ventilation. Contents: The text is divided into 14 parts, comprising 54 chapters. The physiologic aspects of mechanical ventilation are discussed in a refreshingly focused fashion, and each modality and major strat- egy of ventilation is addressed individually. The consequences, ongoing monitoring, management, and complications are discussed in separate sections. Strengths: This text is the product of exceptional editorial skill. It is one of the best tomes on this subject currently available in the English language. Deficiencies: The section on the physiologic characteristics of mechanical ventilation would have been enhanced by consideration of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of stress and sheer injury. In such a comprehensive text, a chapter on quality improvement with the appropriate statistics for reducing variation in practice would be a welcome addition to the second edition. Recommended Audience: Intensive-care specialists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, anesthetists, respiratory therapists, and pulmonary physiologists. Overall Grading: ***** John P.
