Mayo Clin Proc, February 1995, Vol 70
Scope ofBook: This book discusses the successful management ofpatients with ALS, both in the home and in the hospital.Contents: This textbook provides an excellent review of previousand ongoing therapeutic trials and includes a discussion of unorthodox treatments. The chapters on nursing care are excellent. Theyare written by persons who have had extensive personal experiencein the care of patients with ALS and thus can authoritatively outlinethe necessary adaptations that allow patients to cope optimally withthe disease. The role of hospital care, life-support systems, andlegal and ethical questions that arise during the course of the diseaseare discussed. The particular problems of the caregiver are recognized, and the need for psychosocial support for both the patientand the caregiver is emphasized.Strengths: This book is one of few texts that outline in detail theinformation needed by physicians, other health-care professionals, patients, caregivers, and family members to improve the quality oflife of a patient with ALS.Deficiencies: Clinical descriptions, diagnostics, and etiologic factors are covered superficially.Recommended Audience: This practical guide will be indispensable for those who care for patients with ALS, including, in mostinstances, the patient and family.

Section I dealswith scientific fundamentals and extensively reviews potentialcomplications. Section II addresses general laparoscopic surgicaltechniques. Sections III through VI are devoted to specific organsystems, including the upper and lower gastrointestinal and biliarytracts, and miscellaneous procedures. Section VII is the surgicalatlas. Section VIII focuses on the key elements for successfulpostdoctoral training in this highly technical and often controversialfield.Strengths: The text is surprisingly up to date. Quality contributions from national and international authorities help establish thecredibility of this work. The chapters are well referenced. Thesurgical atlas portion is especially detailed and useful. The simplistic black-and-white line drawings that accompany the chapters areclear and concise and make this text a useful instructional guide.Deficiencies: Several of the color slides are of only averagequality. Overlap of information is considerable but reinforcesinformation.

Principles and Practice of Mechanical Ventilation, edited byMartin J. Tobin, 1,300 pp, with illus, $139, New York, McGrawHill (telephone: 212-512-6337),1994, ISBN 0-07-064943-X
Type of Book: A multiauthored text that covers all the clinicalaspects of mechanical ventilation.Scope of Book: A comprehensive, well-written, up-to-date guideon mechanical ventilation.Contents: The text is divided into 14 parts, comprising 54 chapters. The physiologic aspects of mechanical ventilation are discussed ina refreshingly focused fashion, and each modality and major strategy of ventilation is addressed individually. The consequences, ongoing monitoring, management, and complications are discussedin separate sections.Strengths: This text is the product of exceptional editorial skill. Itis one of the best tomes on this subject currently available in theEnglish language.Deficiencies: The section on the physiologic characteristics ofmechanical ventilation would have been enhanced by considerationof the cellular and molecular mechanisms of stress and sheer injury. In such a comprehensive text, a chapter on quality improvementwith the appropriate statistics for reducing variation in practicewould be a welcome addition to the second edition.Recommended Audience: Intensive-care specialists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, anesthetists, respiratory therapists, and pulmonary physiologists.
