SUMMER 2012 The last three months have seen accidents on rallies, with injuries and fatalities for competitors and spectators. Safety equipment minimise the risk to competitors in the car, but if you are marshalling or even spectating try to reduce the risk to yourself and any others with you. Have a look on the club website at the Competitor News page ‘General advice on risk management’ article for information on how to avoid personal injury. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see in this publication, please contact me – EDITOR. The club website is updated regularly; check it out for further information and news. Website www.bordermotorclub.co.uk Border Motor Club are also on CHAIRMAN’S CHAT It doesn’t really feel like the middle of summer, does it? Apparently, this June has been one of the wettest on record, and the period from May to June has definitely been the wettest ever. Nevertheless, sport continues apace. The European Football championship has nearly finished, (then no football for the next two months, thank goodness), Wimbledon is on the go as I write, then before too long it will be the Olympics, followed by the Paralympics. The world of Formula One seems to be taking a back seat for a time. After all the excitement of a very busy Spring, it seems that activity at Border has gone into recovery mode. This is not to be wondered at. The Alan Healy Memorial at Cadwell, and the Classic about six weeks later, took a lot of energy and effort to organise for all the people concerned, so it’s quite right that everyone should have some time to recover and deal with other things. However, as the Club AGM at the beginning of June proved, we are in fairly good health. Membership has increased after the AHMR. Although the AHMR made a small financial loss, this was much smaller than the loss we initially expected to make. The Classic was as successful and profitable as always, so financially the Club is still in pretty good shape. There was some discussion about changing the Club year, so that membership will run from the beginning of each annual year, rather than from September, as it has done in the past. There should be an Extraordinary General Meeting in November to discuss this; so keep looking at the News section of the Club website for the confirmed date, and then come and have your say and let us know your opinion. Of course, there will be a lot of motorsport going on between then and now. Major Club events will restart with the September Classic; but there will be plenty of other events going on before then. Rallying will keep happening of course, but if you’re suffering from motorsport deprivation, then try something else for a change and to get yourself refreshed. Try a race meeting at Cadwell Park perhaps; or something at Blyton, which is getting more heavily used all the time. There is a Charity Rally ride day there next weekend, and the circuit is now being used for sprinting; check out the circuit website for more details. Whatever you choose to do, have a great Summer, and enjoy the long daylight hours. With any luck, the sun might shine as well.

CHAIRMAN’S CHAT It doesn’t really feel like the middle of summer, does it? Apparently, this June has been one of the wettest on record, and the period from May to June has definitely been the wettest ever. Nevertheless, sport continues apace. The European Football championship has nearly finished, (then no football for the next two months, thank goodness), Wimbledon is on the go as I write, then before too long it will be the Olympics, followed by the Paralympics. The world of Formula One seems to be taking a back seat for a time. After all the excitement of a very busy Spring, it seems that activity at Border has gone into recovery mode. Brian Heppenstall Brian, who passed away in April, was a mainstay of De Lacy Motor Club, having been involved with organisation within rallying for nearly 50 years, and also president of the club. He worked behind the scenes in helping his son, Colin; make the Roger Albert Clark Rally the success it is today. Junior 1000 Rally Challenge Local Scunthorpe crew Charlie & Paul Stevens competing in a Nissan Micra are heading both the drivers and co-drivers table after half of the scheduled 10 rounds. Their lowest points score was on the last round at Caerwent, when they went off on SS1 and bent the bottom arm and anti roll bar, losing 3 mins! They fought back from 19th to finish 9th. Manby Motorplex This established motorsport venue is for sale. It includes 23 acres of tarmac with a 2.3 mile track and 4 miles of loose surface rally tracks. There is also 80 acres of rough terrain off-roading ground, a skid pan course, offices and a general purpose building with 320 acres of agricultural land (subject to tenancy) Available as a whole or in up to 5 lots so if you’ve got a spare £3,5000,000 further details are at Brown & Co. Let’s hope it is not lost to motorsport like similar venues have been. Will Rally GB have to find a new home? First the FIA stated that this round of the WRC will not be in the series if the event does not move from Wales after 2012. So this would be the first time that a stage on this rally has run outside of Wales since Tommi Makinen won the Cheltenham Race course test on the 1999 Rally GB. After the above news following a FIA meeting there could be a U-turn as it was announced that apparently there are no plans to include new events into next year's World Rally Championship. Will the current manufacturers want to continue, and new ones commit to a series in turmoil with no promoter six months into the year, a key sponsor leaving, and a lack of global broadcaster, which has resulted in individual events making their own arrangements for filming, post-production and distribution of their rally. Looks like Northern fans could lose out again. Cadwell Park This venue could become one of the country's most impressive race circuits able to host top-flight national races if a £6 million investment goes ahead to include track widening, and possibly extension, as well a hotel and business park. MotorSport Vision boss Jonathan Palmer is in contact with Lincolnshire County Council about the scheme, but says it is early days and the feasibility of it being financially viable will be looked at during the year. He is also keen to retain the unique challenges of the circuit such as the mountain which makes it one of the most popular tracks in the country. Let's hope that if this goes ahead it will not raise costs and price the clubmen who make up the back bone of events held there out of being able to afford to hire the circuit.

Rallying at Brands Hatch Chelmsford Motor club will promote another rally here on August Bank Holiday Monday, the 27th

building on the success of the previous events they have held there in the winter over the past two years. Expect entries to open early June, with a maximum of 80 crews Richard Burns Memorial Rally No event in 2012 due to the RAF being involved with the security cover for the Olympic Games, and so do not have the man power to police RAF Marham as well. King’s Lynn MC looked for an alternative venue, but could not find somewhere big enough, plus barriers, toilets etc were tied up with the games. The rally has raised over £100,000 for the RAF Benevolent Fund and the Richard Burns Foundation over the past four years Current Stage Rally Championship results 2012

EVENT REPORTS The 4th Flying Scotsman. 20th to 22nd April This event passed through Lincolnshire taking in tests at across the county, with one Blyton Park; and an overnight halt at Forest Pines near Brigg, before continuing into Yorkshire on Saturday) The event was won by former McLaren F1 team manager Alastair Caldwell in an Alfa Romeo 6C, co-driven by Catriona Rings.

Twyford Wood Stages, Twyford Wood. 22nd April This event was cancelled due to double booking of the venue by the Forestry Commission. Mid-Derbyshire MC are hoping to reschedule.

Hallamshire Stages Rally, RAF Wittering. 6th May – Blair Bushby/Paul Rhodes (4th O/A 3rd in class.) Paul Moran/Adrian Carnill (Retired end SS3 due do navigator being ill.) 100 miles in 10 stages for £225.00 was good value for money, but this proved to be a hard event on crews and cars, with over 50% of the entries retiring, Paul Moran being one of them. The event was won by Car 1, Peter Lloyd/Martin Henry, in a Subaru S14 WRC, who entered this event following the cancellation of the Welsh rally (It’s not just round here that events are suffering – Ed). He said this was one of the best Prodrive built cars he had ever driven. Fantastic result for the Blair/Paul but hard luck for Paul M, though he did the latter three stages, which gave him over 40 minutes on stages in the last two alone. .

Border Classic 2012. 13th May A fine day for a change which allowed those of the 66 crews who set off from Brigg Market Place that could either remove, or did not have, fixed roofs to enjoy the sunshine. The event is covered in more detail on the website or here:- http://issuu.com/navigator1313/docs/border_classic_2012_-__booklet/1 John Overend Memorial Rally, Melbourne. 20th May - Mel Hudson/Roy Bell Another event with a full entry, which is good for the sport. However with 20 of them Subaru Impreza’s, and other 4WD machines, hopes of improving on a seeding of 21 looked pretty poor, but off to a good start with 17th O/A first in class at end of SS1. Strange Stuart Tomlinson/Nick Taylor in car 18, an Escort with a N/A Cossie lump in it were behind. At the end of SS2 found out why, Stuart had forgotten his glasses, and everything was a bit blurred. Stage 3 saw the only time they dropped behind their seeding, when Mel fell in love with a bit of banking, and gave it a little kiss with the front of the car, but after that climbed back up, until by end of SS7 they were 19th & 2nd in class. Having been on worn knobblies so far was it time for tarmacs as the difference to Stuart and Nick in front was only 7 seconds, and they were not having the best of days themselves. A quick change and away for the final stage, which had to be driven with no errors to get the advantage. At the end the finish crew were bemused as to why the time of the car in front was so important. A quick calculation saw Mel/Roy take 9 seconds out of car 18, and climb of 3 positions to 16th O/A, 1st in class. Would it have been worth running slicks all day? Well there were a lot less punctures than last year, the clubs running events there have done a lot of work to repair potholes, and some crews did run all day with them, and had no problems.

Photographs by kind permission of Rob Spence. Bill Cammack Memorial Trophy Rally, 2nd June Sadly another event cancelled this year. Statement from the organising club below: - It is with great regret that Mablethorpe & District Motor Club announce the cancellation of the Bill Cammack Memorial Rally for 2012. At the closing date only 24 entries had been received. The number was non-viable from a financial point of view. The event needed 42 entries to break even and the number of entries received would have meant a considerable financial loss to the Club at a time of austerity. Every effort was made to cut costs and to try to mount the event, but it proved to no avail. The Club was unable to sustain those losses and the only alternative was to cancel. All competitors will receive a full refund of entry so as not to have any financial loss to themselves. The Club hopes to return again next year at a different time of year with a stronger resolve to put the event on. We would like to thank both Phoenix Awards Roadrunner ANEMMC Stage Rally Championship and Rainworth Skoda EMAMC Stage Rally Championship for their help and would apologise for not being able to fulfill the round of their championships.
