Padre’s Corner OCTOBER 13, 2019 TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

THOUGHTS OF ALEXANDER GRAHAM BELL

1. “I catch glimpses of the harmonies of nature, of how one part fits into another like the wheel-work of a complicatedmachine.” Alexander Graham Bell2. “Of one thing I become more sure of every day my interest in the Deaf is to be a life-long thing with me… I shall never leavethis work….” Alexander Graham Bell 3. “We should not keep forever on the public road, going only where others have gone; we should leave the beaten trackoccasionally and enter the woods”. Alexander Graham Bell4 “Wealth and fame are coveted by all men, but the hope of wealth or the desire for fame will never make an inventor… Youmay give him wealth or take away all that he has, and he will go on inventing.” Alexander Graham Bell5 “What I long for is the heather covered hills of Scotland and the salt air of Baddeck.” Alexander Graham Bell6. “I believe that it will be possible in a very few years for a person to take his dinner in New York at 7 or 8 o’clock in theevening and eat his breakfast in Ireland or England the following morning.” Alexander Graham Bell7. “I have work to do, so much work on so many subjects that I want many more years of life to finish it all”. AlexanderGraham Bell8. “Recognition of my work for and interest in the deaf has always been more pleasing to me than even recognition of mywork with the telephone.” Alexander Graham Bell9. “I have loved you with a passionate attachment that you cannot understand, and that is to myself new andincomprehensible. I…wish to make you my wife – if you would let me try to win your love.” (Written to future wife Mabel)Alexander Graham Bell10. “This period of my life seems to me … as the turning point of my whole career. It converted me from a boy somewhatprematurely into a man. It made me ashamed of my educational status – which was by no means high, and stirred up in methe ambition to remedy my educational limitations by my won exertions… My grandfather made me study by myself, and gaveme daily lessons in elocution and declamation.” (About high school) Alexander Graham Bell11. “The study of Nature is undoubtedly one of the most interesting of all pursuits. God has strewn our paths with wondersand we certainly should not go through Life with our eyes shut.” Alexander Graham Bell

A FATHER’S JUDGEMENT – “Alec is a good fellow and, I have no doubt, will make an excellent husband. He is hot-headed but warm-hearted – sentimental, dreamy and self- absorbed, but sincere and unselfish. He is ambitious to a fault, and is apt to let enthusiasm run away with judgement … With love you will have no difficulty in harmonizing … I have told you all the faults I know in him, and this catalogue is wonderfully short.” Alexander Melville Bell

I did not dream that that interview (with Bell) would be the door through which I should pass from darkness into light.” Helen Keller

Mr. Bell was tall and handsome with an indefinable sense of largeness about him, and he so radiated vigour and kindliness that any pettiness of thought seemed to fade away beneath his keen gaze. He always make you feel that there was so much of interest in the universe, so many fascinating things to observe and think about, that is was a criminal waste of time to indulge in gossip or trivial discussion.” David Fairchild (Bell’s son-in-law)

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland and died on August 2, 1922 in Beinn Bhreagh, Nova Scotia. His last residence is adjacent to the Baddeck museum, built in1967, that gives honor to his multiple inventions (hydrofoil), scientific developments (often cited in the “National Geographic“ magazine), instruction techniques for the deaf (which also assisted his wife Mabel), and the founding of the telephone with an 1876 patent (leading to the establishment of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company - AT&T-in 1885). Bell was baptized in Scotland, though the denomination is not clear as his family was not particularly religious. Not fond of dogma, he found a spiritual home in the Unitarian Church in later years of life (which lacks the clergy structures of most other organized religions). Nonetheless, he used his God-given abilities to further advance human progress and technology. In the age of internet and iPhones, we all owe a sense of debt to him. My decade with the Bell System allowed me to further appreciate his contributions. My point of quoting him freely above is to underscore the call of God to make this a better world through our presence in it, and from whatever creed. Father Bill

TODAY TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 2 Kings 5:14-17 Elisha cures Naaman of leprosy, which convinces Naaman that there is only one God. Naaman then asks to take some loads of soil from Israel, so that he can worship and make sacrifices to one true God on his own land. Second Reading: 2 Timothy 2:8-13 Paul reminds Timothy that Christ rose from the dead so that many people could be saved. Paul was being treated as a criminal and kept in chains but says. "There is no chaining the word of God!" Paul also says, "if we die in Christ, we will live in him. But if we deny him, he will deny us." Gospel: Luke 17:11-19 Jesus cures ten lepers, but only one returns to express gratitude for being healed. Jesus is disappointed that only one gave thanks to God, but tells that one, "Your faith has been your salvation."
