Catchment management

Dead trees and branches have been cut back so they don’t get caught up in a flood.

The river channel is wider to create an area of slower flow. This should reduce discharge downstream during heavy rain.

A debris screen (hidden from view) has been installed to catch floating objects and prevent them hitting bridges in the village

River Jordan overflow culvert has been widened. This stop the river from overflowing and flowing down the road.

The main bridge has been rebuilt so that it spans the river. This stops trees getting caught on it and blocking the channel, increasing flow.

The river channel has been deepened by 0.75m; this increases the rivers capacity and more water can flow in the case of a flood.

The revetment wall was replaced making the river straighter. This makes the thalweg more efficient at transporting water down the river.

The old lower bridge was replaced with a modern bridge which completely spans the river. This decreases the chances of it blocking he river channel.

Some of the grass bank was taken out to widen the river. This increases the flow, and increases the capacity of the river.

The car park has been raised to stop cars being caught in a flood and blocking the channel. The river Valency runs here.

River Valency

Trees and other foliage has been removed from the edge of the river so that it cannot be caught in a flood. This stops the trees from causing havoc in the village by blocking the channel and bridges making the river overflow..

The channel is also widened to slow the flow down and allow sediment to deposit.

Upstream the channel is straightened to increase the efficiency of the flow.

A new car park was built above the other, this has room for more cars increasing accessibility for visitors and is safe from the river.
