The Housing Handbook 3

We are delighted that you are considering living in Malmö and we hope you enjoy your stay in this dynamic and exciting city.

You may already know that Malmö offers a wide range of educational opportunities, but did you know that the city also is renowned for its diversity and fascinating culture?

Malmö has been undergoing a strong and positive transformation from a traditional industrial city to a city of knowledge. Other important factors for modern development and better city living conditions include the Öresund Bridge, the City Tunnel, the growth of the Öresund Region, enlargement of EU, and its location at the crossroads between Scandinavia and mainland Europe.

Malmö Cities vision is to be a socially, eco-nomically and ecologically sustainable city’s.

This can be achieved through smart investments and by welcoming students to the city. Malmö has a large public sector and a rich industry; therefore, there is a constant need for skilled labor in Malmö and throughout the Öresund region.

For the last 25 years, the population of Malmö has been increasing, we are now 300,000 residents living in Malmö! This requires more housing and the city is working hard for everyone to have the opportunity to find a good home. New residental buildings are being devel-oped which which bodes well for the future. As a student, you may want to know how to find housing – we have compiled this handbook to show you “how”.

Welcome!

WELCOME TO MALMö!

4 The Housing Handbook

Boplats Syd, which is Malmö’s municipal housing agency, started in the autumn of 2009. Today most of the student apartments are announced through this agency.

To be able to rent a student apartment you have to be able to verify that you are a student. Although, you can register before you are accepted you need to show a letter of acceptance to sign a contract.

The basic idea behind Boplats is to provide apartments relative to the applicant’s time in the housing queue - the longer the time in the queue, the greater the chance to get an offer on an apartment. How quickly you, as an applicant, can get an apartment is determined by various factors: time in the queue, choice of

area, the property owner’s requirements and the number of vacancies.

You can register at Boplats Syd through their website, they have a Google translate function. When the fee (SEK 300 per year) is paid, you can apply for vacant apartments - up to five at a time. If you accept an apart-ment, your place and time in the queue is reset. NOTE! This doesn’t apply when you accept a student apartment.

To be able to sign an apartment contract through Boplats, this applies to rental apart-ments as well, you need to be able to pay a three month deposit in advance (or find a creditor who has a financial record in Swe-den).

bOPLATs sYd

There is a number of ways to find student housing in Malmö. But you must be prepared to spend both time and energy in an unpredict-able market. It is not impossible, be persistent and don’t give up!

Apply for a student apartmentToday, most student apartments are only avail-able through Boplats Syd (see below), but there are exceptions. In this document, you can read more about the various student apartments in Malmö and and how to get a contract.www.mah.se/studenthousing

Apply for a rental apartmentSome of the private landlords in Malmö own multiple houses, while others have only one or two. Keep in mind that they all have different systems for applying for vacancies - some prefer that you register online, others you need to call.www.mah.se/rental

buy an apartment or a houseIf you have sufficient capital, buying a home in Malmö might be an option. There are a number of estate agencies to choose from and the major-ity of the property can be found online.www.hemnet.se

sublease somebody else’s apartment/roomAnother option is to look at temporary housing, sublet an apartment or become a lodger. NOTE! Malmö University doesn’t recommend students to pay a deposit larger than one month’s rent – pay only in connection with signing a contract! www.mah.se/subletting

1. When a property owner has a vacancy, they inform Boplats. The agency then reviews the property owner’s requirements, checks that the apartment’s details are correct and determines when the apartment will be available for viewing.

2. Apartments are usually advertised on the website for seven days (student housing is advertised for only three days). As a member, you can subscribe to newly advertised apartments via email.

3. After you have applied for an apartment, you can go to ‘My Pages’ to see how many people are in the queue and which spot you are in the queue. You can also see how long the person in the first spot has been waiting in the queue.

4. A number of people are invited to view the apartments. The prerequisite for being called to see the apartment is that you meet the property owner’s requirements and you have had adequate time in the queue. Viewing are usually one on one and is conducted by the owner.

5. After viewing, you must notify if you are still interested in the apartment. The candidate who is still interested with the longest waiting time will be contacted. The personal information that was entered into Boplats is checked.

6. The contract is signed both by the property owner and by you.

7. Time to move in.
