In the proposed plan the playspace is relocated to the east side of the park further away from the traffic along Botanica Boulevard. The space offers an all weather picnic area in addition to play and social activities for children as well as young adults. Other potential improvements to the Park have been identified as future projects beyond the scope of the playspace and picnic facility upgrade. The Open Space Strategy recommends improving links between open spaces at the neighbourhood and local level creating more walkable neighbourhoods. Both Botanica Park and Mimosa Park, north of McKimmies Road, are classified Neighbourhood Open Spaces under the Open Space Strategy and can be developed with complementary facilities. As well as a playground and picnic facilities Mimosa Park has a full size basketball/netball court. If safer access across McKimmies Road can be established, facilities in Botanica Park can focus on providing social gathering spaces as well as some play equipment for children in the middle years and young adults. It is projected that in the near future this demographic will increase within the local community. DESIGN RATIONALEThrough extensive site analysis, community consultation and a review of Council’s relevant plans, strategies and policies, the main priority identified for Botanica Park is an upgraded playspace with adjoining picnic / social gathering area. If safer access across McKimmies Road can be established, facilities in Botanica Park can focus on providing social gathering spaces as well as some play equipment for children in the middle years and young adults. It is projected that in the near future this demographic will increase within the local community.
