DESIGN RATIONALEThrough extensive site analysis, community consultation and a review of Council’s relevant plans, strategies and policies, the main priority identified for Botanica Park is an upgraded playspace with adjoining picnic / social gathering area. In the proposed plan the playspace is relocated to the east side of the park further away from the traffic along Botanica Boulevard. The space offers an all weather picnic area in addition to play and social activities for children as well as young adults. Other potential improvements to the Park have been identified as future projects beyond the scope of the playspace and picnic facility upgrade.
The Open Space Strategy recommends improving links between open spaces at the neighbourhood and local level creating more walkable neighbourhoods. Both Botanica Park and Mimosa Park, north of McKimmies Road, are classified Neighbourhood Open Spaces under the Open Space Strategy and can be developed with complementary facilities. As well as a playground and picnic facilities Mimosa Park has a full size basketball/netball court. If safer access across McKimmies Road can be established, facilities in Botanica Park can focus on providing social gathering spaces as well as some play equipment for children in the middle years and young adults. It is projected that in the near future this demographic will increase within the local community.
FUTURE WORKS
Create a safe pedestrian crossing at McKimmies Road to enable better access to Mimosa Park.
A
Provision of additional access point including kerb ramps and path connection to north east corner of the Park.
B
Replace the timber shade structure at the end of its useful life.HRemove or replace timber arbours at the end of their useful life.
C
An upgrade or replacement of the existing bridge should be the next priority project for the park due to its current poor condition.
G
Create a secondary picnic area to supplement the primary picnic area if usage patterns of the new area indicate a need for additional facilities in the Park.
D
Investigate measures that can be implemented to improve the water condition of the upper and lower ponds.
F
STAGE 1 WORKS
Demolish existing swing and re-grass area for general park use.
2
Demolish existing playground, rubber surfacing, softfall mulch, timber edging and granitic sand paving and re-grass area for general park use.
3
Demolish existing asphalt path and re-grass area for general park use.
4
Upgrade existing granitic sand path to a sealed path.6
Realign main asphalt path along the east side of the lower pond creating space for the new picnic and playground area.
5Create new sheltered picnic and playground area. Refer to Sheet SD2 for Concept Plan. Remove existing paths which dissect this space as well as old park furniture; picnic settings and seats.
1
Install distance marker bollards along existing path circuit.7
Provide irrigation to the grass areas immediately surrounding the playground and in the secondary picnic area.
E
