BotsIQ CELEBRATING 15 YEARS!

Faced with an aging manufacturing workforce, the Pittsburgh Chapter National Tooling and Machining Association led a consortium of manufacturing companies, trade organizations, educational partners and economic/workforce development agencies to bring a national student robotics program to the region in 2005. As a result of their hard work and dedication, the first Southwestern Pennsylvania BotsIQ competition was held in the spring of 2006 with 5 career technical schools participating. Now in its 15th year, the program’s impact has grown exponentially with nearly 10,000 students participating since its inaugural year.

BotsIQ provides high school students with an exciting, hands-on team experience where they design and build a 15-pound Bot to battle in a gladiator-style competition. Under the guidance of school teachers and industry mentors, students develop the in-demand technical and 21st century skills required to succeed in manufacturing and STEM careers. As a result, BotsIQ alumni are working at manufacturing companies across the region, including: Oberg Industries, Composidie/EDM Services, RoPro Design, L&S Machine Company, Hamill Manufacturing, Penn State Tool & Die, DMI Companies, Aerotech Inc., and many more.

In 2018, BotsIQ Academy was launched, granting every student access to quality technical education through online manufacturing training platforms. This year, the program expanded to provide more opportunities for students, like the NIMS Measurement, Materials, and Safety Exam Preparation Course. Additionally, four more professional development days were hosted for teachers and students to develop technical skills in electronics, mechanical engineering, and computer programming. With schools shifting to remote learning this spring, BotsIQ Academy experienced an increase in enrollment, and BotsIQ staff continued to develop new resources and programming to adapt to the needs of its schools and students.

Last September, the BotsIQ Close the Loop program was introduced to schools in Fayette and Westmoreland counties, to enhance students’ understanding of the manufacturing industry and its career opportunities. Additional career services such as job shadowing, internships, and mentorships are offered to students enrolled in the Close the Loop program.

BotsIQ understands the importance of attracting, developing, and empowering the next generation of manufacturers. Thank you to the schools, teachers, students, families, industry partners, volunteers, and supporters that further BotsIQ’s mission to build the current and future workforce that industry needs.
