June 2016 Dear Friends, Summer is here! This can be a very hungry month for some. During the school year, children can receive reduced or free meals twice a day at school, but when school isn’t in session and kids are home more, it can be more difficult to make food dollars stretch. Please consider supporting: Shopping Cart : Bringing at least one food item for our shopping cart each time you come to church over the summer. Think of kid-friendly items like juice, peanut butter, tuna, macaroni and cheese, fruit snacks, and granola bars. Open Table : Especially if you haven’t yet attended or volunteered for an Open Table Meal, please plan on doing that over the summer. Upcoming dates for our free community meals are: June 26, July 31, Aug. 28 th , Sept. 25 Samaritan Center: St. Matthew’s is sponsoring and serving an extra Samaritan Center meal this summer on August 28 th . The Samaritan Center is often short on volunteers over the summer, so you can also call them at 472-0650 to schedule another time to serve, when it works with your schedule. Gift Cards: I still keep a supply of gift cards for food and other necessities in my office for people in need. I especially like to give out gift cards for Aldi, Tops, Kinney and Rite Aid. If you’d like to give a gift card, you can give it to Deacon Shelly or Mother Carrie or put it in the offertory plate at church. Also, your donations of returnable bottles and cans get turned into gift cards for needy families by Erin Staub – and that continues as well. Thank you for your generosity! SAMARITAN CENTER FUND RAISING UPDATE: I would like to take this opportunity to thank the St. Matthew's community for their very generous support of the Samaritan Center. Through your increased donations and purchases of items at our Giving Boutique, we are on target to fully fund our three meals and possibly a fourth! I would like to acknowledge these generous memorial contributions received: Mary Vaughn…Friends of Mary; Addy Parker…Steve Parker and Bob Niedzwiecki; David Martin…Daniel and Kathryn Martin. Mary and Addy were both gifted and loving educators who devoted their careers to improving the lives of children with special needs. David was a young man who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to his country. These individuals all devoted their lives to the service of others, remembering them by giving to those most in need is a fitting tribute. I would also like to thank the talented artists who have given so generously of their time and talent to contribute items to our giving boutique. It has been an amazing success! Thank you all!! Special thanks to Laurel who keeps the whole "pop-up shop" going! - Clinnie Poole

SAMARITAN CENTER FUND RAISING UPDATE:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the St. PARISH DIRECTORY PICTURES Here’s the link to the directory pictures: http://cbarrusphotography.zenfolio.com/f680457080 (password: Grapevine1) If you would like to view them via an app on your phone, the link is: http://cbarrusphotography.zenfolio.com/f680457080/2032506316/appstart.html It is set so that you can download and even order, if you choose. How you see the image is how it will print. You can do a quick check cropping once you have the item in your cart. If you haven’t had your picture taken because you don’t want it online, let us know! Cindy can only put it there when she prints them and then take it off soon after. Cindy has had a few comments/requests for a book to order. One will be put together after we have the majority (so far, we only have a little more than half of the congregation) and we’ll let you know details later. If you wish to submit your own photo for the photo directory, we can do that too! Please email it to Sarah in the office at [email protected] ******************************************************************************************

BOOK CLUB AT ST. MATTHEW’S

Our next book club selection is Being Mortal, by Atul Gawande. We will meet at the end of July (date tbd).

In his bestselling books, Atul Gawande, a practicing surgeon, has fearlessly revealed the struggles of his profession. Now he examines its ultimate limitations and failures—in his own practices as well as others’—as life draws to a close. And he discovers how we can do better. He follows a hospice nurse on her rounds, a geriatrician in his clinic, and reformers turning nursing homes upside down. He finds people who show us how to have the hard conversations and how to ensure we never sacrifice what people really care about. Riveting, honest, and humane, Being Mortal shows that the ultimate goal is not a good death but a good life—all the way to the very end. – Amazon.com

Please consider donating for altar flowers. Memorials and thanksgivings will be noted in that week’s bulletin and stated during the Prayers of the People. The cost of each arrangement is

$25. Please use the envelope provided next to the flower book located on the desk near the coat rack. Multiple arrangements can go on the altar, so don’t be afraid to sign up on a date that is already filled. Help make our sanctuary a beautiful place to worship! Any questions?
