– Natural navigation• Plants, *not* mobile animals • Coral is an animal• Sun (or moon) rays/position• Depth and/or sloping bottom


• Distance measurement– Kick cycles– Time– Air consumption/tank pressure– Arm spans– Lines/tape measure


• Challenges to navigation– Current– Lack of natural landmarks– Visibility– Surge


• Compass use tips– Keep it level– Keep lubber line pointed ahead– Look ahead/across/around, be aware– Use point-to-point navigation– Don't move the bezel for out-and-back navigation– Trust the compass, but not completely
