As I write this I have just comefrom a “Bye Bye Benjamin”cocktail reception for BenjaminKrevolin, the former ExecutiveDirector of the Dutchess CountyArts Council. Benjamin is amember of our board who isleaving to assume his newposition at Vassar College. On behalf of the board and itsmembers I would like to thankBenjamin for sharing his timeand talent with the DutchessCounty Regional Chamber ofCommerce and wish him muchsuccess in his new position.Like previous months,

August’s Chamber calendar ispacked with ribbon cuttings, events, breakfasts, lunches andbusiness after hours events.Due to some personal andprofessional obligations I wasnot able to attend many eventsin June and part of July. It wasthen that I realized during mybrief unavailability that theChamber is bad for my diet. If Ididn’t like food this would not bea problem.I am sure I am not the only

one who does a little self-talkbefore each event regardingfood, so for fun I thought I’dshare my own “Tricks of theTrade” on how to make themost of any Chamber eventwithout blowing your diet. Pleasekeep in my mind these are notendorsed by the Chamber, nor isweight loss guaranteed.Contact Breakfast –Hot

sauce – lots of hot sauce onthe eggs. Get fruit to temper

the burn of the hot sauce (thestrawberries near the granola/cereal table are really good).Absolutely no bread, cereal ormeat. If you are not up for theburn (sometimes I am not) thenyogurt and fruit.Business After Hours &

Ribbon Cuttings – The 3D’s: Deadly Dangerous forthe Diet. Abstinence is out ofthe question. If a restaurant ishosting it you do not want tooffend the restaurateur, nor doyou want to defeat their purposeby not trying their food since thisis their big chance to showcasetheir culinary skills. Strategy: Ifthere is a buffet, only take onesmall bite of each item on yourplate. If you like something, make dinner reservations andorder it for dinner. If there arepassed hors d’ouevres, only tryone of each item and only if theycome directly to you. Under nocircumstances casually makeyour way to an enticing platterof food.Luncheons – Don’t even

think about eating dessert first. As you can tell I have tried thisand it is not good. After thesugar high you will crash duringthe speaker’s presentationand maybe even snore. Thinkgreen with some lean protein. There is always a salad orvegetable wrap – thank God forvegetarians! Remember to goeasy on the salad dressing. If itis a cave man event (meat only)do not eat the bun.Regarding beverages – Apart

from water, lots of ice is yourfriend. Ask the server to fill theglass with ice then add whateverdeadly sin you want to indulge inat half the calories. This monthour Business After Hours is atthe Millbrook Winery, a perfectevent to try out some of thesedietary tips.Thank you for letting me have

some fun with you this month. Itis not good to be serious all thetime.

It’s become quite common touse social media to increaseyour business’ bottom line, but recently LinkedIn.com hasproven to be the “site to know”in a time where Facebook maybe more popular. LinkedIn hasadded new features to allowbusiness owners and businessprofessionals to increase theirtraffic to their own websitesand target market to potentialcustomers like few other socialmedia sites.“LinkedIn Today” was a beta

product launched by the providerearlier this year to serve as a“latest news” board for users’connections, coworkers andindustry peers so users cankeep on top of what is beingshared and what stories thereare of interest to the broaderLinkedIn audience. If you workto create compelling content foryour personal LinkedIn page, you have a much better chanceof getting more people to noticeyou now that this kind of newsgets more free publicity fromLinkedIn on your behalf.LinkedIn also offers a

news feed just like Twitter orFacebook, so continuing to buildyour network of connections isstill key. You may want to takesome tips from a LinkedIn staffer

who suggests kick-startingyour key words, featuring anew photo, adding some appsand getting active in groups. Ifyou’ve already made efforts inthese areas, you may look atyour profile and see if you’vefallen into the trap of using the10 most popular key words thatwill actually hurt you when tryingto make the most of your profileand attract more connections;terms such as “extensive

experience”, “proven trackrecord”, etc. Adding additionalapps to your profile regardingbooks you may be reading, travel itineraries that you mayhave coming up for busines, orpresentations you have recentlyworked on can all boost yourpotential for additional traffic andtherefore business by settingyou apart from your competitionand helping you to build yourbusiness relationships on adeeper level.LinkedIn also launched its

Android app recently, which

only helps you in trying to keepyour content and profile fresh fortarget audiences. However, ifyou’re still thinking that LinkedInmay not be able to help keepyour business growing, take alook at these facts from a studydone by LeadFormix:

1 in 2 leads to a website1.coming from LinkedIn, comefrom individual profile +company profile pages.Visitors from LinkedIn2.groups are also most likelyto respond to webinarinvites.Based on the intent of3.visitors measured byLeadFormix, the mostrelevant traffic for acompany comes from itsLinkedIn employee profilesand participation in groups. These visitors are mostinterested in the companydetails, product offeringsand in attending webinarswhich are highly correlatedwith a potential buyer’sintent.Visitors from LinkedIn4.company pages are mostlikely to spend more than10 minutes on a companywebsite.

1) Educational informationI attended Dutchess

Community College andgraduated in 1996 with anAssociates Degree. I thentransferred to Marist College andobtained a BA in History and aminor in Public History in 1998.While in college, I interned atthe Eleanor Roosevelt Center atVal-Kill where I assisted with thedevelopment and organization ofa teacher-training workshop forHigh School and Middle Schoolteachers to instruct on theUniversal Declaration of HumanRights.2) What prompted you to

become a class participant?My supervisor, Andrea L.

Reynolds, presented the ideato me. She had heard positivefeedback about the programand thought that it would be agreat opportunity for me. Afterreading about the program andtalking to a few alumni I knewI really wanted to participate inthe program.3) What was your favorite

session at LD? and why? That’s a toss up. I really

enjoyed the Leadership sessionwith Dennis Barnett and theCommunications session withDr. Ross and Denise VanBuren.

The Leadership session wasvery inspiring and I left thesession energized. Dennis hasa unique way of really gettingto know his audience, holdingyour attention and challengingyour mind. The Communicationsession really asked the classmembers to step out of theircomfort zone. Each person wasrequired to speak publicly. Yousaw the class come togetherand really encourage those alittle reluctant to speak.4) Are you still in

communication with yourclassmates?I am still in communication

with a number of my classmates.I worked on the Alumni WingMadness event this year andthat required me to reach outto not just all LD alumni, but myclass in particular. Additionally Ihave become pretty good friendswith a few of my classmates, attending networking eventstogether, community fundraisers, housewarmings and even babyshowers. I believe this is truefor a number of the people inour class. Also, the ChamberFoundation does a good job atengaging alumni to participate ineach year’s class, from the Backto the Barn event, mentoring,

committee support and otherevents throughout the year.5) Would you recommend

the program and why?I would most definitely

recommend this program andhave. Leadership Dutchess isa unique program that affordslocal individuals an opportunityto take leadership roles in thecommunity and become moreactively involved in making it aneven better place.6) Has the program inspired

you to become more involvedin your community and how?Since Leadership Dutchess

I have become much moreengaged and active in ourcommunity. I served on theChamber Foundation boarduntil the merger this June. I ama member of the LeadershipDutchess Committee, aLeadership Dutchess Mentor,I co-chaired the Alumni WingMadness Event and I moderateda session for this year’s class.Additionally, I am on theAdvisory Council for the HudsonValley Young Professionalsand Co-Chair the Educationand Professional Developmentcommittee.
