FEATURED FARM Schouten Corner View Farms, Ltd. Richmond, Ontario, CanadaInstalled by Dundas Agri Systems, Inc.

In 2014, a state-of-the-art milking facility was connected to the existing barns via a breezeway. The parlor highlights a double-25 fully-automated parallel BouMatic Xcalibur 90LX high-lift stall. A basement under the operator’s platform houses all milk meters, receivers, pulsators and related equipment.

The new structure is complete with twin 7000-gallon Glacier Tanks, farm offices, board room and staff room. Alongside the massive parlor a herd management area sorts cows into a double palpation rail or into headlocks for treatment. Also connected to the maze of building during this expansion was a third freestall barn with 250 stalls and two perimeter feed lanes.

Key FOR THE Report Codes:

A – Hose disconnected or no vacuum present or bad coil in pulsator.

B – Vacuum too low, check air leaks.

C – Vacuum too high, check vacuum regulator.

D – Cow stepping on hose, or hose clogged.

E – Pulsator dirty, pulsator sticking or fresh air restriction.

F – Fresh air restricted or with vacuum. Piston not sealing or hole inside liner.

Milk PointPeace of MindAN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT TO MILKING gently, quickly and completely is having a pulsation system that is working properly. Knowing that every milk point is being monitored to maintain peak performance can be a real peace of mind. BouMatic introduces the newly updated Pulse MD™ Milk Point Monitoring unit.

The Pulse MD is a real-time monitoring tool that diagnoses potential issues for your dairy parlor. It combines the latest hardware sensors and advanced software to continuously check pulsator performance and the corresponding milk harvest related equipment. It will alert you with a code on the unit to let you know to check that stall.

Web-BasedThe Pulse MD can be installed in conjunction with the SmartDairy® NP controller. The controller operates on a web-based application using web browser software, meaning Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Chrome and others. You can remote in from any web browser

via smartphone or computer. All that is needed is the IP address found on the controller. This allows a dealer,

herd manager, and other key players to monitor the milk point performance or review the reporting no matter what their location

Parlor Service ReportJust like the SmartLite reporting, the Pulse MD will have a Parlor History report that details milking time, alarms and pulsation graphs. Data can be viewed by ‘Date’ or by ‘Milkings’.

When viewing a report it will display green and red bars. The red areas signify an error. When you select an error it will bring up a screen detailing the time of the error, the duration of the error and the error

code for that stall.

The Parlor Service Report can be run to show details of only the stalls with errors. The stall number, the number of alarms, length of alarms

and the related alarm codes are highlighted.

The Pulse MD is just one more way to help improve upon the efficiency and profitability

of your parlor. Improve your overall operation by combining SmartLite to achieve more accurate information on your routines and improve your operation’s efficiency, reliability and eventually your cow’s comfort and health.

MILK QUALITY IS NEVER AN ACCIDENT. It is the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution. It represents the wise choice of many alternatives and the commitment of management. Simply put, milk quality is a way of life.

Efficient production and harvesting high quality milk is the goal of most dairy farmers. On occasion, we get in a hurry to milk cows faster. To save time, you might be tempted to cut corners with your pre-milking hygiene routine, rushing through steps, or eliminating some steps entirely. The time you cut from your prep program won’t be waiting for you at the end of milking.

In fact, what helps a cow to milk faster is taking time to properly prep them. Remember…cows love routine and will reward operators that provide it. Research has documented a 5.5 % increase in lactational milk yield when a standard-ized milking routine was used compared to a variable milking routine 1. The thought process really should be that the time you

spend up front, you gain back at the end because the unit will be on the cow for less time.

An excellent prep program includes the following milking procedures:

✓ A Clean, Low-Stress Environment for the Cows - Cow handling is an important determinant of milking time efficiency.

Exposure to stress within 30 minutes of milking can interfere with milk letdown and prolong unit on-time. Stress stimulates the adrenal gland to produce adrenalin (another hormone) which

inhibits the effect of the oxytocin on the milk producing cells and stops milk letdown. The result…slower milking, lower yields and an incomplete milkout.

✓ Forestripping - Forestripping is advocated as a method to encourage milk letdown. This eliminates microorganisms in cisternal milk and allows for visible detection of clinical mastitis. Forestripping also starts the stimulation process, which is important. Scientific studies show that good stimulation means shorter milking times and a higher milk flow rate 2.

✓ Sanitize Teats - The most dangerous bacteria reside at the teat end. Teat end disinfection is important in reducing the number of bacteria. It is well established that proper teat end disinfection, can reduce teat surface bacteria by 75%. Reduction in teat end bacteria numbers reduces the rate of mastitis. Choose the most suitable pre-dip to fit your routine, making sure to wait the necessary amount of time for

Would YOU Like To Milk Cows Faster?

A proper prep program goes a long way towards putting more quality milk in your tank, faster.

the germicide to work before wiping it off. A minimum contact time of 20-30 seconds is needed for effective disinfection.

• Another option is to use Kleen & Dri disposable towels from BouMatic. They combine stimulation, teat massage and sanitation into one step.

• Using gloves during milking, such as powdered nitrile gloves from BouMatic, can also reduce the risk of spreading mastitis. Milker’s hands are a source for transmitting mastitis-causing bacteria from cow to cow.

✓ Premilking Stimulation - A proper prep process is a balance between speed (efficiency) and completion of the required steps to clean udders and manually stimulate milk let down. Milk letdown is a combination of both oxytocin (from the pituitary gland) and stimuli from the local nervous system providing feedback to the muscles surrounding the milk producing cells to release the milk into the ductal and cisternal system for harvest. In most situations, studies have shown that 10-20 seconds of manual stimulation is adequate 1.

• Always incorporate manual teat massage into your prep routine. Teat massage optimizes the stimulation process as well as improves the cleanliness of the teats. Use a down-ward circular motion, concentrating on the teat ends where a majority of the nerve ends are located.

• With proper stimulation, most cows’ teats will be flush with milk and the milking unit can be attached immediately. You’ll get higher first minute flow rates, higher peak flow rates and faster milking time. Extra seconds stimulation can save as much as 1 to 1.5 minutes per milking unit on time for

high-producing cows. Operators should be aware to not attach units too late…units should be attached within 90-120 seconds after manual stimulation (applying teat dip does NOT start the clock).

✓ Attach Milking Units to Dry Teats - The most important portion of the teat disinfection process is thorough drying of teat ends. Air drying is not a satisfactory substitute for manual drying with an individual cloth or paper towel. Wet teats allow skin bacteria easy access into the gland and reduces friction between the teat and the liner. Milking wet teats increases the chances of mastitis and reduced milk quality.

✓ Post Dip Teats Immediately after Removing Unit - After removing the units, verify that cows are milked out evenly in all quarters. Post-milking teat antisepsis was initially developed to reduce the transmission of contagious mastitis pathogens and has been widely accepted. Apply a post-dip, such as Bovi-Kote from BouMatic, to help promote skin exfoliation, to provide long lasting protection in tough environments and to help with the removal or reduction of hyperkeratosis. Finally, the last step in an effective milking routine is to ensure that the cows remain standing for at least 30 minutes after milking is completed.

✓ Be Consistent - Routines should be consistent from one milking to the next and from one milker to the next. Cows need to be milked the same way, by all milkers, during all milkings – ALWAYS!

Do what is BEST for the COW!!! Think… “Gently, Quickly, and Completely™”.

BOUMATIC UNIVERSITY

Mastering Sales Solutions

DURING 2016-2017 THE BOUMATIC sales staff and dealers have been participating is our latest classroom professional selling course Mastering Sales Solutions. The goal of the class is to focus on transitioning good salespeople into great salespeople within our sales team and dealership network. We spend three days taking a deep dive into the selling process. During these three days we learn how to cultivate quality relationships and get to know our customer by formulating the best questions, and ultimately delivering profitable results the bottom line of both our dealers and producers.

Opening the Call WellThis is the first step in a successful sales process and needs to be done well. During the call opening, you want create an environment for your customer promoting mutual interest and trust. You want your customer to feel at ease and share information with you about their business, goals or objectives. Most importantly the outcome of this first call is that the customer realizes that you, the sales- person has their best interest in mind.

Set a Commitment ObjectiveDoing your homework prior to the call and ‘opening the call well’ with a solid ‘Commitment Objective’ in mind will help you earn trust and gain success early on with your customers. At the end of the day, you want to be able to leave your

customer with a mutual mindset of “That was Time Well Spent.” Be mindful the productive environment you are creating for your customer must truly promote high levels of TRUST and low levels of TENSION.

Ensure you have that ‘commitment objective’ of the day, prior to meeting with your customer on any sales call. Think of a commitment objective as a goal you want to accomplish with that particular customer on your visit or phone call. A commitment objective may be as simple asking on a phone call for that first 30-minute appointment to get to know his operation; to as large of a commitment objective as obtaining a signed contract on a $1,000,000 installation your dealership has been consulting on for over a year. Regardless of the size of the commitment objective you are seeking today, remember to follow through with it, during the call.

Avoid Dropping InA common mistake many salespeople make today is simply “dropping in because I was in the area.” This is by far the worst reason people embark on a sales call, yet the most common. During these ‘impromptu’ visits or phone calls, neither you, nor your customer are prepared for productive discussion. This commonly results in a waste of time for everyone involved.

Out of consideration for customers’ time, develop a commitment objective, and make sure you call on a customer at a time that is convenient for them. Also make sure you prep your customer for your visit by letting them know the purpose are going to meet. This will ease the tension during your conversation and lead to a productive session with your customer since they will have been able to give some forethought to the meeting, prior to your arrival.

Stand OutWe all know our customers have an abundance of choices to make regarding their operation today. Who they want to do business with, what product they want to purchase, what brand, how much capital they want to invest in the project, who will install or service the product, etc. The key question you need to ask yourself is ‘What makes ME and MY DEALERSHIP stand out from the rest?’ First impressions as to how and when you present yourself to a customer are the key first steps to building those genuine buyer/seller relationships.

Join us for our next session of Mastering Sales Solutions and let BouMatic help you master the professional selling skills for your dealership team.

IN 2017, BOUMATIC HAS TRANSITIONED system wide using the iQOT system, across all its dealerships and has officially discontinued use of the former QuickQuote system. To highlight this transition, BouMatic has made a

concentrated effort since late 2016 to ensure all dealerships are successfully educated on using the iQOT system.

In November 2016, we created the iQOT online course ‘Using the iQOT System’ housed on the BouMatic University (BMU) system. This comprehensive course takes the user through the iQOT user manual, divided into 4 user friendly sections. Topics and FAQ’s ranging from requesting access to the iQOT system, how to create / modify a quote and the various quote output types are all covered in detail. Online quizzes are also included with this course and must be taken to receive the BMU credit for the course. In addition to being a training tool, the new iQOT course serves as a fantastic reference tool for our BouMatic dealers and staff. You may also print off the presentations as a great reference manual for your dealership.

Starting February 22, 2017, our BouMatic training department, in conjunction with the Dairy Solutions team began holding bi-weekly iQOT training webinars. These one-hour calls focus on a subset of the iQOT manual and walk the participants thru the processes of iQOT and allow for questions our dealers may have regarding the system. We feel this venue is perfect for training, since the calls are both audio and video with the iQOT system live-on-screen for demonstration. This allows for questions to be asked, discussed and demonstrated all at once. The webinars are recorded and then posted to the iQOT training course with in the Sales section of BMU. This allows our dealer network unlimited access to the training webinars online, 24/7.

UPCOMING CLASSES

Our first iQOT call focused on getting into iQOT, creating a simple quote and selecting an output type. The second call focused on adding items to existing quotes, modifying quotes, Bill of Materials (BOM) / kit configurations and the approval process for quotes. Stay tuned for dealer eblast news articles regarding the upcoming iQOT training webinars.

The Double Grabber design has been implemented in all our major markets. These include installations in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Quebec, Canada and Wisconsin, USA.

Dealer Training has been at the top of the list for the USA. The first dealer sales training was held the week of March 20th. It was well attended by the core group of BouMatic Robotics dealerships. The 2-day course was an in-depth training covering all the important features and functions of the robots, optimal robot placement within facilities and important considerations when identifying sales prospects.

In addition, the attendees had the opportunity to tour Stonehouse Dairy, a shining example of a BouMatic Robotics installation. There were many compliments for the installing dealer, Gehring Sales and Service. The dairy located in Hartford, WI is equipped with two MR-D1 robots that were commissioned in 2016.

Since the first commercial robot installed in the field in September 2011, BouMatic Robotics has continued to build momentum in the US market and beyond. There’s an exciting future coming in robotic milking, and BouMatic Robotics has the premier lineup of products to lead the way!

BOUMATIC ROBOTICS

BOUMATIC ROBOTICS IS PROUD to drive further innovation to the robotic dairy industry with the release of its Double Grabber technology. The new mechanical head is an eagerly anticipated update that allows the robot arm to fetch two cups at once, resulting in efficient arm movement and box performance. By reducing the arm movement, the Double Grabber increases the cow throughput.

This feature is standard equipment on all single-box and double-box robots coming off the production line in Emmeloord, Netherlands. In addition to the mechanical components, new PC and TouchScreen hardware along with updated software are also included as standard.

Adds New Technology
