We welcome our
friends from Bristol
for the eighth time
this afternoon. As can be seen
elsewhere in your programme,
things have been very tight
between us over the years and we
are defending an unbeaten home
record against them today. After
losing a couple of games in the
first five games of the season, a ten-match winning streak,
triggered it would seem with a
win against us at Lockleaze in
September, saw them climb from
7th at one point to being top of
the table. However two losses
latterly, including a second defeat
at the hands of fierce local rivals Old Redcliffians last week which must have gone down like a lead
balloon if comments by The
Oracle in their programme are
anything to go by, has seen them
swap places at the top and Dings
now lie second. So, as The Oracle
also observed this time about the
citizens of Bournemouth, we had
better not put in an incontinent
performance this afternoon if we
are not going to relinquish that
unbeaten home record.
Congratulations to Scott
Chislett who started his 250th
League match at Cleve last week,
only the second Bournemouth
player to reach that particular
milestone. Now in his thirteenth
season with the 1st XV, Scott has
been a loyal member of the team
and it is hard to imagine being
without him. At the other end of
the scale, Alex Everett-Bolter
started his 25th League game
also at Cleve and he has scored 50
points. Alex joined us from New
Milton and has made the step up
look very comfortable.
Last Sunday we entertained the
D&W U20s in their match against
their Hampshire counterparts
in a pre-championship warm up
recording a handsome 25-19 win,
reversing a somewhat different
outcome last season at Overton.
From a Bournemouth perspective,
we were delighted to see we had
five lads in the squad. Hamish Renwick, now at Hartpury
College was captain, and scored
a very fine try, showing pace and strength to out run the opposition
from the halfway line. Rather
reminiscent of his father Bill who
played for us back in the 90s.
Hamish plays his rugby at Clifton
where he is the 1st XV openside.
Hooker Matt Goddard who scored
a try and Sam Bailey who played
lock also caught the eye. James
Fisher and Loui Guinta came off
the bench. We are entertaining
the Championship match against
Devon on Sunday 29 February.
Come along and support the
U20s, I am sure you will enjoy the
rugby on offer. KO is 1pm.
Our referee this afternoon is
Kevin Williams taking charge of
his fourth match for us on this his
second visit to Chapel Gate. We
first met Kevin on this Saturday last year in the home game against
Chippenham followed by games
at Lydney and Ivybridge this
season and we are delighted to be
able welcome him back to Chapel
Gate for today’s match. The
referee adviser is Simon Thomas
making his umpteenth visit to
Chapel Gate and, as always, we
also offer Simon a warm welcome
with the hope both enjoy their
afternoon with us.
Enjoy the rugby everyone and
thank you for coming along.
Doug Warren, President.

Our Opposition Today
Dings CrusadersThe Dings Crusaders were founded in 1897 by H W Rudge as part of a mission to bring sporting
activities to one of the most deprived areas of Bristol, playing their matches on the Downs (Dings
moved to Lockleaze in 1948). Both Dings Crusaders and their opponents changed in a local house, with
the players taking their turn in a single galvanised bath after the game!
Dings Crusaders’ first international “Sunny Jim” or “Darkie” James Peters played for the Dings and Knowle before going on to play for Bristol and then England in 1906, gaining five caps in all.
Dings started off the leagues in 1987/8 in Gloucester 1 (Level 9) (NB We were at Level 5 SW1 at the
time) and steadily climbed up the divisions: 1990/1 Gloucester & Somerset, 1994/5 Western Counties,
1996/7 SW2 West, 2001/2 SW1 until they reached National 3 South as it was then (Level 4) for the
2003/4 season. There they remained until 2014/2015 when they were relegated for the 2015/2016 season
and remained for this season. However, our paths crossed for the first time when we gained promotion to National 2 South for the 2012/3 season. As can be gathered from the record shown below, home
advantage was the crucial factor and was the case when competed in National 2 South. However we
came close in to losing at home in September 2013 in a very tight match. With just minutes to go,
fullback Mark Woodrow had the chance to put the game beyond Bournemouth’s reach when Dings were
awarded a penalty with the scores at 30-36. However, can I say uncharacteristically, he pulled his kick
outside the near post. A quickly taken drop out and regather saw Bournemouth retain posssesion taking
play deep into Dings’ 22m. Scott Chislett was almost over but flanker Joe Atkinson was on hand to score just wide of the posts. 35-36. Could fly-half Jack Metters, on his debut, hold his nerve? The whistle blew as the ball sailed over the bar and Bournemouth had secured an unlikely victory. We broke the accepted
order of things with our first win at Landseer Road in September last season and perhaps should have done much the same this season but conceded a 23-20 advantage to 13 men with just minutes to go. It
was all to similar to an agonising last minute defeat in January 2014 in N2S. So things have been ‘nip
and tuck’ between the two sides. Dings are currently lying 2nd in the division having swopped their top
slot with Old Redcliffians by virtue of a home defeat at their hands last week. They are also on the move from Lockleaze and are currently developing a new home on the site of the
old Frenchay hospital. Housing development was much in evidence at Lockleaze when we last visited
back in September.
