Following the recent election in May, Martyn Underhill has be re-elected as the Police and Crime Commissioner for Dorset. Spotlight on Volunteering

The Community Group is a team of students from Bournemouth & Poole College. They are supported by Sarah O’Brien David Ross. The group was set up in September 2015 to respond to interest from students with learning difficulties/disabilities to have the opportunity to experience being a volunteer and gaining the skills required for the world of work whilst receiving the assistance and guidance of both lecturing and support staff. They operate on Mondays using the college as a base before heading out to work on their various projects in the local community. The group is made up of Ben, Russell, Ben P, Hannah, Derri, Roberta, Angela, Maureen and Ruth with ages ranging from 20-55.

The objectives for the group are to: Provide practical, realistic and varied

voluntary work and community projects that will assist students in improving their employability, social and community skills

To give them a broad range of experience that will assist them in identifying where their skills and interests are suited

To provide students with the opportunity to recognise and develop the life skills, attributes and professionalism that are required to become a successful volunteer

The group have found assisting others in need a particularly rewarding aspect of volunteering and Members say they would recommend volunteering to others as a way of boosting self

-esteem and confidence, as well as providing opportunities to try new things, meet new people and learn new skills. So far the group have aided the elderly residents of a local nursing home with their shopping, helped to operate a café at a Memory Loss social afternoon, undertaken conservation projects at the Thomas Hardy Education Centre, planted seeds at a sensory garden, assisted with social activities at the Leonard Cheshire Residential Home, worked with Dorset Advocacy to provide ’Quality Checks’ in hospitals, cleaned a church and pre-pared the teaching materials at a primary school. They have completed roughly 50 hours of voluntary work to date. One member of the group, Hannah, will go on to work independently with Dorset Advocacy having demonstrated her skills and interests in this area while working with the College group. If you have an opportunity for The Community Group please contact Sarah O’Brien via [email protected]
