Special occasions are always meant to be celebrated. And luckily, pet parents have even more reasons tocelebrate during their furry babies birthdays, of course!

I was organizing my digital photo les over the weekend

when I came across Hitlers multitude of photographs from the day we got him 4 years ago, to just a few daysago in our bedroom. Amidst the hundreds of les, eachyear without fail on July 3rd, memorable photographsmark my furry babys birthday milestones.

Truth be told, at rst I thought I was spoiling Hitler a tad bit too much, especially

when his 2nd birthday celebration with his furry friends and their pet parents in

Bonifacio High Street made it to the lifestyle section of a major newspaper. But I

realized fairly soon that for pet parents like me, celebrating the birthdays of our pets

was more the norm rather than the exception.

Thus, we put together this Party Time! issue of The Bow & Wow Times, lled

with fun and fabulous ideas to help you make the special occasion even more special.

And as an added treat, we are also launching the Pet Gift Registry this October, soyou can register for your pets bir thday gifts in Bow & Wow. Check out our magazine

    centerfold for great gift ideas!

With the holidays coming up in the blink of an eye, its easy to get caught up in all

the festivities that we fail to take extra precautions against possible hazards against our

pets. The informative article on page 16 is a denite must-read for every pet parent

this season. And, if you are thinking of getting a new pet or know someone who is,

please do consider giving homeless pets a home for the holidays by adopting them

through any of our local animal welfare organizations. Visit the adoption galleries of

Are You A Pet Owner Or A Pet P

In the past, companion animals were not considered family

members. They were aids on the farm or had utilitarian roles

in the lives of the household. Guard dog, mouser, plow power,

and other such work roles meant that animals were in our livesand performed very vital roles in them.

Today, animals have different roles. They have been brought

into the home, and many even sleep in beds with their humans

or in their own specially designed, comfy beds. That shift in

consciousness and in our relationships requires still another

shiftone in how we train them and mold them for life with us.

If you really want to be a good pet parent, efforts to mold a

pets behavior need to start early and the adoptive pet parent

needs to do some research and preparation to get the job done

in a manner that is fun and humane, taking actions to have theirefforts become a lifestyle.

Pet parenting begins before any formal training and continues

throughout a pets life. It parallels the strategies and efforts savvy

    parents take with their children.

What does a good pet parent need toprovide for a pets mental health and acuity?

    a clean living environment

    good diet

    mental stimulation

exposure to different people, places, and things

    guidance (aka rules and boundaries)

    consistency

    enriching toys

    behavioral coaching

    behavioral training

    unconditional love

    pet pare

Pet parenting is a lifestyle shift.

Pet parenting is the guidance and teaching that takes place

before, during, and after any formal training.

It continues through the pets life and is not just overt practices

but smaller nuanced steps and efforts that impact the household

for the better. Pet parenting is not pamper ing, it is not indulging.

It is responsible guidance for the long term welfare of the pet.

It isnt hard but it takes awareness and education and

motivation to implement. When most people decide to have

a child, they research and read. They prepare a room with

everything they need for the new baby. Bringing another new

being into the home isnt so differentit requires research,

preparation, and it is a lifelong commitment.

What Makes a Good Pet Parent?

    A Good Pet Parent:

Researches pet ownership prior to getting an animal or

    immediately upon ownership.

Feeds a nutritious diet so the pet will never suffer obesity,

malnutrition, or the complications from it.

Integrates the pet into the family and household.

Makes sure the pet always has good shelter and protection

    from the elements.

Commits to wellness check-ups at least twice a year and

    obtains veterinary care as needed.

Engages in regular grooming practices and professional care

    when necessary.

Participates in animal school so that the pet is understood

and so rules can be established for the health & safety of all.

Complies with all applicable laws related to pet ownership

    and proper pet management.

Makes sure that the environment is safe and secure to prevent

pet escapes or against the danger of intruders.

Enriches the environment and provides mental stimulation

for the pet through enr ichment, toys, play, and training.

Ensures that the pet has daily exercise and physical activity.

Understands the risks of unauthorized contact or harassment

when out in public (both to and from others).

Learns how to minimize risks when traveling with the pet and

    during encounters with others.

Respects the animal for who and what that animal is.

Does not neglect or abuse the animal.

Makes a lifetime commitment to caring for and housing the pet.

    6/28Best Party Ideas For Your

Bir thdays are special days the world over and when it comes

to the birthday of a pet, a celebration is in order. Many loving pet

parents enjoy celebrating the bir thday, or adoption date, of their

beloved cats or dogs. While pets ignore cakes and calendars, the

humans in their lives relish the chance to spoil their pets withgifts and special treats. Even if your pet wont know the reason

youre having a par ty, rest assured, they will enjoy the attention

and your family can enjoy your fur ry babys special day.

    Determine the Birth Date

If you are not certain of your pets birth date , make your best

guess. If your pet is adopted, you can celebrate his adoption date

as his birthday. Be sure to mark your pets ofcial birth date or

    adoption date on your calendar.

What Type of Party Will You Have?

Your pet is not going to care as much about a birthday

party as you will, but you should still plan the party with their

interests and needs in mind. If there are other animals that your

pet gets along with and enjoys playing with, plan a pet-and-pet

parent bir thday party. Just remember that many pets do not like

unfamiliar animals, especially on their turf.

If inviting other pets to the par ty wont work, then invite kids (but

only if your pet likes and behaves well around kids). If you dont have

children of your own, invite kids from the neighborhood, nieces and

nephews, or the children of friends.

Decorations for Your Pet Bir thday Par ty

What is a party without decorations? Create a festive atmosphere

to celebrate your pets special day. Choose decorations that are safe

and non-toxic for animals and children. Do not use any decorations

or items that are small and pose a choking hazard or could be

    harmful if swallowed accidentally.

Pet birthday parties are all about creativity. Consider organizing

your pets birthday par ty around a theme. For instance, is your kitty

the princess of your family? If so, you could hail Her Royal Feline and

plan a party t for royalty, complete with princess-themed decor

and kitty-size tiaras. Is your pup more of a pirate? You could plan

a Pawrite Pawty for your canine matey.

A good choice for birthday party decorations would be pet

products. Decorate with pet toys, leashes, collars, and other items

that can be used by your pet. Check at your local party store for

paper plates, cups, napkins, and tablecloths that feature animals to

go along with the theme of the par ty. A length of pet-themed fabric

can also be used as a tablecloth. Remember that the decorations

Your pets favorite food and treats should denitely be on the

menu for your party, but remember the human guests too. Cupcake

for the humans, or cookies shaped like dog bones, sh, carrots, o

some other favorite pet treat are great choices.

Remember to keep the pet snacks away from the people, and

the people snacks away from the pets as many people foods are

    toxic to pets.

    Gifts and Games

Birthday parties usually have gifts and games. Your pets party

should include a few fun games for the guests to enjoy, especially

if your pet can get in on the game. For a dog, an exciting game

of fetch with a tennis ball would be a great choice. Some chase

games with yarn or a laser light would provide plenty of fun and

    entertainment for a cat.

For gifts, pets always enjoy new toys or special treats. A new

collar or leash, a new pet bed or food dish, or some other type ofun gift would be good choices.

Remind guests to bring their own video and digital cameras

and have your own charged up and ready to capture all the action

and memories. Make your pets special day fun, and although they

probably wont be marking the calendar for the next birthday

everyone will enjoy the festivities while wishing them Happy

    Birthday!

    party

est Party Ideas For Your Baby

are more for the party guests than the guest of honor and will

set the tone for the festivities.

Instead of regular plates or bowls for food, use pet food dishes.

Be sure they are clean before you use them. To cut down on

expenses, use a combination of pet food dishes and disposable

plates or bowls. Use the pet food dishes for serving rather than

have guests eat out of them.

Food for Your Pet Bir thday Par ty

Whats a birthday without a great cake for the guest of honor

(and his furry fr iends) to enjoy? Your pet would so agree. You

can create a simple cake from canned cat or dog food. Turn a

can or two of his favorite avor upside down on a plate (let

those fresh juices form a dripping kind of icing). Adorn with an

unlit candle for the full birthday effect. Cut into cake-like slices

if other pets are present or s imply let your pet dig in and enjoy

    while the human guests watch.

Or you may opt for something grander, and go for a specially

made cake for your pets. Making a pet-friendly cake isnt as

difcult as you might think. The key is to steer clear of sugar and

chocolate, which could upset your pets stomach or make him

seriously ill. A good way to avoid sugar is to use a substance

like organic peanut butter as a substitute. There are many cake

recipes for dogs or cats, readily available online.

Making birthday cakes for your pet is downright fun, and your pet will certainly love the taste of a homemade cake over the drab

    avor of his daily kibble.

The great thing about baking pet cakes is that you are free to use ingredients you might not consider for people cakes. Meaty canned

pet foods add protein and a avor boost to any batter. Pet cake recipes are simple and usually only require basic ingredients you may

already have around the house, with very few exceptions. The steps are also typically simple. Mix the dry ingredients, mix the wet

ingredients and combine both together in a well-greased pan. Batches are small, so baking times are minimal.

Veterinarians can tell if an animal has been socialized the moment

they walk into an exam room. Some animals come bounding up

and are happy to see me and everyone else, while others hide and

cower behind their owner. Life is stressful for them, says Bonnie V.

Beaver, DVM, professor at Texas A&M University in College Station.

Social ization helps make the di f ference. Animals are

preprogrammed to become fearful of people and things that arent

part of their everyday life, so they react appropriately when they

are in danger. But you can introduce a new dog or new cat to a

variety of situations when its very young so it doesnt live its life

afraid of straying from its neighborhood or meeting new people.

When you do, your pet will be more laid back and can enjoy life.

    How to Socialize Your Pet

Start at a few weeks of age. Puppies and kittens need to

be socialized before they are 16 weeks old. The ideal time for

socialization is between 3 and 12 weeks of age. The window of

opportunity to socialize your pet usually closes around 18 weeks.

For kittens it may be even younger.

Set goals. Think about who and what a puppy or kitten will be

around when it gets older and make a long list of the things your

pet needs to be socialized to. That means children, men, women,

crying babies, crowds, etc. The wider the variety of people you can

expose your puppy or kitten to, the better.

    How to Socialize Your Pet

    petiqu

Include different environments. Have your puppy walk on

grass, concrete, on busy streets, quiet streets, and areas with othe

animals. This is also the time to get your dog used to be handled

during grooming. Kittens can also be socialized by having people

come to your house or by bringing your kitten to other people

houses, although its better to visit someone who doesnt alread

    have a cat.

    Socialization Tips

When youre ready to begin socializing your dog or cat, keep

in mind these tips for success:

Do it daily. Ideally, you should try to socialize your pet every

day during the r st 16 weeks. When strangers approach, let them

    pet your dog.

Get them used to carriers. If you want your kitten to loo

forward to vet visits, leave its carrier out for playtime. Carry the

kitten from one side of the house to the other and leave ca

    treats in the carrier.

Reward your pet. Make your puppy or kitten feel good abou

new things by praising it during socialization and giving it sma

treats (break up a normal size treat into small pieces so your pe

    doesnt get too many calories).

Give it about 75 minutes. Puppies and kittens are constantl

learning; they become socialized to new things within 75 minute

    of being exposed to them.

Be gentle. Its important to keep a close eye on your pet

reaction to new things. Dont force it if a situation seems too

overwhelming and scary for your pet. Your pet may need to be

exposed to that particular thing more gradually.

Go for pet training. You can socialize your pet on your own

but if you need help, consider hiring a pet trainer or joining pe

    socialization classes.

Socializing dogs and cats this way ensures that theyre bette

adjusted as adults and may be easier to train because theyre les

    distracted by fear.

Is your pet shy or a social butterfly? Many experts say that the key to having a

well-behaved dog or cat is socialization heres how to get started.

    12/280 Ask th

    ask the vet

    Q. My dog got infected with fungus that affects the

skin from one clinic that we had his teeth cleaned.

Can I use over the counter fungal cream to relieve

him from the itchiness that he is experiencing and

totally cure him of this fungal infection?

    A. First of all, you must choose the vetclinic or pet hospital that prioritizes their

sanitation and hygiene . You bring your pet

babies there to be healthy, not to get them

sick. Fungal infection takes quite a while to

cure, and you must be certain of what type

of fungus infected your pet so you can

    determine the corresponding medicine

that can cure the infection. Laboratory

tests from skin scrapings, blood, or even

plucked coat can be done in the vet clinic.

If you have other pets in your household,

you might want to isolate the infected petso that the others will not be infected.

    Q. I do not want to breed my female cat but she

is displaying signs of interest to my other male

cats. She is only 5 months old, is it the right time

    to have her spayed?

    A. Usually, it is advisable to have your pets undergo spaying or

neutering when they are around 6 months old, this is to ensure

that they have already produced the reproductive hormonesneeded by their body for their growth and development. If your

cat is mixed with male cats, they would eventually mate and she

would be pregnant. It is better to isolate your female cat because

they are induced ovulators (they can easily produce eggs) in the

presence of a male cat. It is also advisable to have your male cats

neutered as it is easier for them to recover after this kind of

    elective surgery.

    Q. My Labrador only eats vegetables and yoghurt

I once gave him a piece of meat and he threw up

    Is this normal?

    A. Introducing meat to a digestive system that is used to a plant

based diet would not only cause vomiting but may also cause

diarrhea and indigestion (the microbes in the gut may not be

able to help digest meat), leading to los

of appetite and weakness. In order to

ensure that your pet gets the best out

of the diet he is used to, you might wan to ask your vet for some supplement

    (vitamins, minerals and also probiotics

prebiotics for a healthier good bacteria

    for the gut).

Is it ever a good idea to give a kitten or puppy as a holiday gift?

Most experts wave the red ag at the idea of holiday pets, but if

the animal in question has been a long-considered family addition,

it isnt always a bad idea. Here are some things to keep in mind

when thinking of gifting a new pet this holiday season.

    The Wrong Way

Never surprise anyone with a pet as a gift. Its not an inanimate

object. Its a living, breathing being thats going to depend on that

person for food, water, exercise, and attention - for at least 15

years, says Sandra DeFeo, director at the Humane Society in New

    York City.

Every year, people get a kitten or a puppy for someone as apresent and the per son receiving it isnt ready for the responsibility.

Pets given as gifts start trickling into the Humane Society soon

after the holidays have passed, but most are surrendered in the

    spring.

    The Right Way

Do a lot of research and preparation before bringing a puppy

or kitten home. For instance, last year, Fitz Koehler, a mother of

two in Gainesville , Fla., decided her children, ages 6 and 4 at the

time, were ready to have a pet. Theyd been begging me for a long

time to get a dog, Koehler tells Paw Nation. We went through

pet sh and lizards, and my kids were very loving toward animals.

After my son carried a dead ladybug around in a box for a week

as a pet, I knew they were ready.

Koehler began looking for the right dog for her family on

December 1. She went to a nearby animal shelter and met several

different dogs and breeds. She chose to adopt a 6-month-old,

female yellow Labrador-greyhound mix who was sweet and gentle

and, according to the animal shelter staff, good with children. I

asked the shelter staff a million questions, says Koehler.

Koehler named the dog Piper and arranged for Piper to stay

at the shelter for several weeks until she was ready to surprise

her children with their new family dog on Christmas morning.

I visited Piper at the shelter every day and took her for long

walks, says Koehler. I also had time to get everyth ing ready, like

her food, bowls, and leash. By the time Piper came home, I had

everything prepared. A year later, Piper is very much a part of

the Koehlers family. Were as lucky to have her as she is to have

    us, says Koehler.

    Important Considerations

DeFeo feels strongly about a no Chr istmas pets rule , but afte

hearing the Koehlers story, she makes a concession. That is the

one exception I can think of when it would be OK to give a pet

as a gift, says DeFeo. Because the person giving the pet as a gif

would be the one caring for it.

If youre considering doing something similar, Koehler has some

advice. Dont take the kids with you the rst time you visit an

animal shelter to pick a pet, says Koehler. Theyre bound to fa

in love with every puppy they see and a lot can go wrong if you

let a 4-year-old choose the dog. Koehler knew what kind of dog

would be best for her family. I didnt care if a dog was cute o

how it looked, she says. I wanted an average-size dog that wagentle, athletic, and good with children.

18/286 Top 10 Holiday Pet Ha

    ask thet care

Holidays are a busy time for the vets. Thats because holiday pet

hazards overlooked by busy owners can spell disaster for your

dog or cat. Keep the contact number of your vet handy, suggested

Jim Cook, DVM. Next, check how savvy you are about the top 10

holiday pet hazards and how to reduce the risks.

    Holiday Hazard #1: Chocolate

Any chocolate is off-limits for pets. Bakers chocolate is the most

toxic, Cook said. The darker the chocolate , the more dangerous

it is to pets. Theobromine and caffeine are the toxic ingredients.

Holiday Hazard # 2: Christmas Tree

    Curious dogs may sniff and pull the tree over on themselves;

cats like to get up on this strange indoor tree. Anchor it, Cook

said. Secure the tree with wires so it doesnt topple over. Watch

out, too, for the tree preser vative often put in the water around

the tree trunk, so your dog or cat doesnt lap it up. It can cause

    gastrointestinal problems.

    Holiday Hazard #3: Seasonal Plants

Poinsettias are fairly low on the toxic scale but eating them

may still cause some gastrointestinal upset for your pet. Other

problematic holiday plants to keep out of reach: Christmas cactus,

mistletoe, holly, cedar, balsam, and pine.

    Holiday Hazard #4: Table Scraps

Rich, fatty foods, anything salty, spicy, or greasy are holiday

favorites, but they can result in life-threatening pancreatit is. Chicken

or turkey bones can splinter in the stomach. Keep garbage and

    table scraps out of reach.

    Holiday Hazard #5: Ornaments

Tinsel and small decorations hanging on the tree can be gobbled

by your pets, and intestinal blockage can result.

    Holiday Hazard #6: Holiday Cheer

Slipping a dog, cat, or other pet alcoholic beverages to see how

they act when inebriated isn t funny, and could be very dangerous,

Cook said. It can make them very sick, with vomiting and diarrhea.

Holiday Hazard #7: Dangerous FoodsBe sure your pet has no access to coffee grounds, grapes, raisins

onions, chewing gum, or mints with Xylitol. This sweetener, also

used in baked goods and candy, is associated with liver failure and

    death in dogs.

Holiday Hazard #8: Socially Shy Pets

Some pets simply arent comfortable around a lot of people

Some pets get scared, others get hostile . If your pet isnt a socia

buttery, put them in a spare bedroom with food and water, ou

    of the way of guests.

    Holiday Hazard #9: Escape Artists

Sometimes, guests who arent used to keeping track of pets

leave the door open, enabling your pet to wander outside. Besides

alerting guests to your furry escape artists, make sure you have

a way of nding your pet. That means either a microchip, a rabies

tag, or ID tag with you and your vets contact information.

    Holiday Hazard #10: Aluminum Foil

Crumpled up, with food sticking to it, aluminum foil can be

irresistible to a pet. If swallowed, though, it can cause puncture

wounds in the gastrointestinal tract, Cook said.

The holidays can be a busy and stressful time, but its also a

time to reconnect with your family, friends, and of course, pets

So be sure to take the proper precautions to ensure everyone

has a safe and happy holiday season.

Grooming is an important part of your pets health care. Nails

that are too long can shift a dogs posture and create structural

problems down the line, and teeth that have never seen a brushcan be lost. Despite the fact that they are relat ively self-sufcient,

cats do still need a little assistance in the grooming department.

Trimming claws and cleaning ears are just two of the things youll

need to help your furry friend with.

    Nails

Clippers come in many sizes and shapes; the

most important thing is to look for a tool that you

can handle easily. Choose from a scissors-like clipper

or a gui llotine-style clipper. Trim a bit of nai l at a time

to avoid cutting into the quick. Watch your vet or

groomer cut the nails the rst time so you can see

how its done before doing it yourself.

    Ears & Eyes

    Check inside the ears

every week and if you see

a waxy residue, wipe it off

    with a cotton ball dipped

in mineral or baby oil, or a

    vet-approved ear-cleaningsolution. For eyes, use a soft

    cloth dipped in warm water

to gently clean the lids and

    around the eyes.

    Dental Health

Pets need good tooth and gum cleaning, too, to ward off

dental problems and gum disease. Plaque and tar tar buildup and

periodontal disease can even usher in heart, kidney, and other

problems. Watch for warning signs: red, bleeding or receding gums

    and persistent bad breath.

Brush your pets teeth using a gentle-bristled brush and

toothpaste intended for pets. You might have to use your nge

wrapped in gauze or a small nger brush if he puts up too much

of a ght. A brushing ever y few days should keep his mouth clea

of tartar and bacteria buildup, although a daily brushing is ideal.

    Coat Care

In addition to removing loose hair that would otherwise be

swallowed or left on furniture, brushing promotes good circulation

stimulates the skin, and keeps the coat shiny. Its also a way to bond

with your pet, as well as to check for any body changes that may

signal a visit to the vet.

    Bathing

    Start your dog off

    early in the tub, train

    him to allow himself to

    be bathed, and reward

    him continuously while

    washing him. Dont

    bathe him more than

    once every week or

two, depending on thecoat type. Bathing too

often can lead to a dr y,

    brittle coat and scaly,

    aky skin.

An older or injured cat may not be able to keep itself adequately

clean and may need to be bathed. Some cats become very agitated

during the process, however, so its up to you to make bathing a

stress-free as possible for all participants. Youll probably want a

helper so one of you can hold the cat while the other does the

shampooing. Both of you will probably get quite wet, so have lot

of towels at the ready. Its also possible that you may get scratched

so take a few moments to trim the claws rst.

Professional grooming is always an option, but it is still importan

that a pet parent be able to take care of at least minor grooming

problems without ending up in a wrestling match with their furry

    babies.

    23/28Issue No. 9 www.bowandwow.com.phThe Chartreux

    breed spo

The name, Chartreux, has been associated with this breed since

the 16th century. Some historians claim that the breed is named

after the Carthusian monastery, the Grande Chartreuse, founded

in the 11th century in south-eastern France. Others think that since

the breed had a woolly coat, the name was derived from a type

of Spanish wool, called Pile de Char treux. The modern history of

the breed began on the island of Belle-Ile off the coast of Brittany,

France. The Leger sisters discovered a colony of the large blue cats

and began to breed them in the late 1920s.

The rst Chartreux was shown in 1931 and later descendants

went on to win a number of shows before the Second World War.

Like other European breeds, their numbers were decimated during

the Second World War and breeders had to reconstruct the breed

by mating the few remaining Char treux with stray blue cats. By 1970

the numbers were sufcient to disallow any further out-crosses.Chartreux were imported to the US during the 1970s and in 1987

was given championship status by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA).

This breed is relatively rare in North America and is characterized

by its smiling face, massive body, and wooly coat.

    Characteristics

The Chartreux is a medium to large sized cat breed with large and

muscular shoulders and a deep chest. The male is more massive than

the female. The Char treux are slow to mature and males may take

ve years to reach their full size of 12 to 17 pounds while females will

only take 3 years to reach their full size of 7 to 11 pounds. The tail is

fairly long and tapers to an oval t ip. The females coat is silkier than

and not as full as the males. The coat of the Chartreux is short- to

medium-length, plush, dense, and double-coated and can even feel a

bit wooly. The face is large, broad, and has wide jowls with a sweet

smiling expression. The eyes are large, round, and quite expressive

and can vary from pale gold to copper to orange with the deeper

colors more desirable. The ears are small to medium sized and set

fairly high on the head with rounded tips.

    Color Varieties

The coat color can be any solid shade of grey-blue ranging from

ash to slate, with pale silver highlights at the tips. Clear or evenness

of color is prized in judging Chartreux. They have slate-gray noses,

leather-blue lips, and rose-taupe paw pads.

    Temperament

Chartreux are affectionate, self-assured, and almost have a dog-like

temperament. This is not a lap cat and is content to remain nearby

waiting until you are ready to play. Chartreux will exercise in short

bursts and can be taught to retrieve. They adapt to most household

situations and are quiet, almost mute, with only a high pitched chirp

which is used infrequently. They will purr but not meow. Chartreux

are calm and quiet companions with lots of patience and can adapt

to being left alone during the day. They get along with other animals

in the home and adapt well to small or large households. Chartreux

get along very well with children, and children love these plush

smiling friends. They make great apartment cats, being alert and

playful without being destructive, and can become quite sedentary

after the age of 4 or 5.

    Cat Care

Chartreux are very healthy and can live from 15 to 20 years if

given sufcient exercise and a healthy diet. Chartreux have a tendencyto put on weight after they fully mature and should be fed a calorie

restricted diet and encouraged to play more if they are putting on

weight. Patellar luxation or displacement of the kneecap is common

in some bloodlines and you should discuss the potential for this

hereditary disorder with your breeder. The short- to medium-length

plush coat is easy to groom and a once per week combing with a

steel comb keeps the coat neat.

    24/282 Canine Parvovirus Infection In

    Canine Parvovirus Infection In Dogs

    Symptoms and Types

The canine parvovirus (CPV) infection is a highly contagious

viral illness affecting dogs and manifests itself in two forms. Themore common form is the intestinal form, characterized by

vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, and lack of appetite . The intestinal

form of CPV affects the bodys ability to absorb nutrients, and an

affected animal will quickly become dehydrated and weak from

lack of protein and uid absorption. The less common form, which

is the cardiac form, attacks the heart muscles of young puppies,

often leading to death. Dogs with CPV may also have low body

temperature (hypothermia), rather than a fever. The majority of

cases are seen in puppies between six weeks and six months old.

    Causes

Most cases of CPV infections are caused by the canine

parvovirus type 2b which is transmitted either by direct contact

with an infected dog, or indirectly, by the fecal-oral route. Heavy

concentrations of the virus are found in an infected dogs stool,

so a healthy dog will contract the disease if he sniffs an infected

dogs stool. The virus can also be brought into a dogs environment

by way of shoes that have come into contact with infected feces.

There is evidence that the virus can live in ground soil for up to

a year. If you suspect that you have come into contact with feces,

you will need to wash the affected area with household bleach,

the only disinfectant known to kill the virus. Breeding kennels and

dog shelters that hold a large number of inadequately vaccinated

puppies can also be a source for CPV. Certain dog breeds, such as

Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Pit Bulls, Labrador Retrievers,

German Shepherds, English Springer Spaniels, and Alaskan sled

dogs, are particularly vulnerable to the disease.

    Diagnosis

CPV is diagnosed with a physical examination, biochemical tests,

urine analysis, abdominal radiographs, and abdominal ultrasounds.

A chemical blood prole and a complete blood cell count will also

be performed. Low white blood cell levels are indicative of CPV

infection, especially in association with bloody stools. You will need

to give a thorough history of your pets health, recent activities

and onset of symptoms. If you can gather a sample of your dogs

stool, or vomit, your vet will be able to use these samples for

    microscopic detection of the virus.

    Treatment

Treatment is focused on curing the symptoms and preventing

secondary bacterial infections. Intensive therapy and system

support are the key to recovery. Intravenous uid and nutrition

therapy is crucial in maintaining a dogs normal body uid after

severe diarrhea and dehydration, and protein and electrolyte levels

will be monitored and regulated as necessar y. Medications may beused to curb symptoms and to ght parasites. The sur vival rate

in dogs is about 70 percent, but death may result from severe

dehydration, secondary bacterial infection, bacterial toxins in the

blood, or intestinal hemorrhage. Prognosis is lower for puppies

since their immune system is less developed. It is common for a

puppy that is infected with CPV to suffer shock, and sudden death

    Living and Management

Even after your dog has recovered from a CPV infection, it

will still have a weakened immune system, and will be susceptible

to other illnesses. Talk to your veterinarian about ways by whichyou can boost your dogs immune system. A diet that is easily

digested will be best for your dog while it is recovering . You wil

need to isolate your dog from other dogs for at least two months

after recovery, and you may want to tell neighbors who have dogs

that they will need to have their own pets tested. Wash all of the

objects your dog uses (e.g., dishes, crate, kennel, toys) with non-

toxic cleaners. Recovery comes with long-term immunity against

the parvovirus, but it is no guarantee that your pet will not be

    infected with the virus again.

PreventionThe best prevention against CPV infection is to follow the right

protocol for vaccination. Young puppies should be vaccinated at

six, nine, and twelve weeks, and should not be socialized with

outside dogs until at least two weeks after their last vaccinations

High-risk breeds may require a longer initial vaccination period

    of up to 22 weeks.

    25/28Issue No. 9 www.bowandwow.com.phDemodicosis In Cats

Demodicosis, or mange, is an inammatory skin disease in cats

that is caused by various types of Demodex mites not visible to

the naked eye. Demodex mites are commonly found on the skin of

mammals, and in most cases are not symptomatic of an abnormal

condition, but when the immune system is compromised by stressor illness, or the body is producing excess oil or hormones, the

Demodex population may become excessive, leading to skin and

    hair problems.

When the number of mites inhabiting the hair follicles of a cat

become excessive, skin lesions, genetic disorder s, problems with

the immune system, and hair loss (alopecia) may follow. The

severity of symptoms depends upon the type of mite inhabiting

your cat. Although mange is rare in cats, Siamese and Burmese

breeds appear to be at a higher risk.

    Symptoms and Types

Symptoms may include hair loss around the eyelids, head, neck,

and ank. Additionally, lesions on the skin, scales, and crusty patches

    may occur.

    Causes

Mite disorders in cats are rare, thus there is little known about

them. However, two of the species of mites that cause mange in

cats have been identied. The rst, Demodex gatoi, is potentially

contagious and may be transmitted between cats in the samehousehold. The second, Demodex cati, is associated with diseases

of the immune and metabolic systems, such as diabetes. It has been

found in some cases that impaired immune system or hormone

imbalance will allow the Demodex mite to overpopulate.

    Diagnosis

Skin scrapings are used to nd and diagnose demodicosis. Hair

samples may also help identify the specic mite responsible for

the condition. A urine test may identify other possible causes for

the skin conditions, namely those caused by a disorder in your

cats metabolic system. Alternative diagnoses may include scabies

    or allergies.

    Treatment

In approximately 90 percent of the cases, the problem is likely

to resolve itself spontaneously. For severe generalized cases, long-

term medication may be necessary for controlling the condition.

    pet h

    Demodicosis In Cats

Lime-sulfur dips to the affected areas may help relieve symptoms

In either case, the general health status of your cat should be

    evaluated.

    Living and Management

Follow-up care should include additional skin scrapings, and

microscopic examinations of hairs. The latter process is known as

a trichogram, a diagnostic tool which uses hairs that have been

plucked for examination so that appropriate treatment can be

prescribed. With chronic long-term cases, regular medication may

    be necessary.

    Prevention

General good health may help prevent some cases. Keepingyour cat clean, without drying the skin, and in optimal health, wi

help to keep the Demodex mite population in balance. It is also

advised that cats with generalized chronic mange not be bred, a

the condition may be genetically based in some breeds and may

    be passed to offspring.

26/284 Is Your Dog Licking or K

    By Dr. Nicholas Dodman

Is Your Dog Licking or Kissing?

    Psychopathology

Some sensitive dogs in stressful environments compulsively

groom themselves to the point of self-injury. Licking of this type

leads to acral lick dermatitis (a.k.a. lick granuloma). Some dogs

take to licking oors, walls, or furniture. Whatever the outward

expression of compulsive licking, the mechanics underlying the

disorder are the same. In treatment of this condition, rst the

underlying anxiety must be addressed. In some cases, it is also

necessary to employ anti-compulsive medication to help break

    the cycle.

Lovey Dovey? We should always bear in mind that any behavior can be

enhanced learning. Psychologist BF Skinner immortalized the

concept that reward increases the likelihood of a response . So it i

with licking. If a dog licks his owners face perhaps as a vestige o

maternal lip licking, out of anxiety, or just because his owners face

tastes salty and his behavior is greeted with attention, hugs, and

(human) kisses, he will likely repeat the behavior in future. So while

face licking may not represent true romantic love, it nevertheless

can sometimes be interpreted as some token of a dogs affection

or respect ... and thats nothing to sniff at.

    you and your pet

Is your dog kissing you when he slurps your face like a lollipop?

There are several possible explanations for this behavior, some ofwhich are purely biological:

Bitches lick their newborn pups to arouse them from their

postpartum daze. Licking serves to remove clingy membranes from

the pup, freeing him up to move and stimulating him to breathe.

Once the birthing and clean-up processes are over, the mom

dogs licking her pups stimulates them to eliminate both urine

and feces. It is a couple of weeks before pups will eliminate

    spontaneously.

Licking also serves another more romantic role in the sensethat it is a comfort behavior that assists with pups bonding to their

mom and spurs on their mental development.

From about six weeks of age, some pups lick their moms lips

when they want her to regurgitate food for them. This behavior

is a vestige of their wild ancestry, designed to ensure that they

proted from the spoils of the hunt.

Licking can also be a signal of submission and so is part of a

    dogs body language communication system.

Pups and adults lick and groom themselves to removes traces of

the last meal that would otherwise begin to decompose and smell.

    Psychology

Dogs, like people, engage in a number of displacement

behaviors when nervous or stressed, and many of these behaviors

involve self-grooming. When you are stuck at a red light, glance

over to the driver next to you. He will likely be stroking his hair

or looking in the mirror. Dogs have their own share of dilemmas,

like going to the vet. Vets expect more anxious patients to begin

nervously licking their lips as they enter the clinic.

Some dogs lick as a gesture of appeasement and goodwill. They

may lick a person to whom they signal deference to. But for some

dogs, it seems that they engage in face licking because they can

get away with it. When licking is performed for such a reason, it

may be part of the center stage, attention-demanding behavior

of dominant dogs. No lick! is a good command to have for them.
