APS PREMIERSHIP SECURED WITH GRITTY WIN OVER CAREY ON THE MAIN

Congratulations to the boys of the Scotch First XI who have become the APS season premiers following their win over Carey last weekend. With one round to go their position on top of the ladder is unassailable. The premiership has been achieved by a group of boys who from the very first round have demonstrated a dedication and commitment that has been second to none in the competition. Superbly coached and drilled the boys have achieved the ultimate success at APS level. This talented squad have been led with distinction by captain Will Sutherland and this deputy Noah Croes. Stand outs with bat, ball and behind the stumps the contribu-tion of these team leaders cannot be underestimated. But a cricket team comprises more than two players and both Will and Noah are quick to acknowledge that this has been a team effort with contributions by every member of the squad throughout the season. Undefeated with one round to go the last remaining challenge for the boys is to secure the perfect season with a win over Haileybury this weekend. Haileybury at one stage were vying for the premiership with Scotch so they too have enjoyed a strong season. The match shapes as a fitting climax to an outstanding season. All will be hoping that the Scotch boys can finish on a high and cement their reputation as the best team in the APS competition for the ‘16’ - ‘17 season. GO SCOTCH!!

Match Report (John Murphy) Scotch 10/181 (Sutherland 49, Clark 24, Bangs 20, Stub-bings 20, Cormack 16n.o) defeated Carey 10/164 (Sutherland 5/32, Bangs 1/11, Jackson 1/16, Cormack 1/29) Scotch won the toss and elected to bat. At 5/88, our captain was having 2nd thoughts. However we had some mini part-nerships and showed great resilience to get to 6/142, before faltering in the last 30 minutes on Friday night, to finish at 9/147 off 60 overs. After a quick catch up on Saturday morning at the local café for a latte, the team arrived as a collective focussed and res-olute in their determination to succeed. Chris Jackson and Charlie Cormack batted really sensibly and with great aplomb, as they extended the score to 181 from 72 overs before Jacko was finally dismissed for 14, leaving Charlie 16 not out. Carey were soon in trouble as Scotch bowled and fielded with great enthusiasm and effort. It certainly was our best

fielding performance for the season. Carey limped to 6/87, 7/115, and 8/125 before a stubborn 9th wicket partnership. As the score creeped ever so close to 181, our skipper came on for his 3rd lionhearted spell for the day. Sutho took the last 2 wickets to finish with 5/32 off 17.2 overs. We bowled Carey out for 164. A great game, and huge relief and mighty cele-brations for the team as the win secured the team the APS Cricket Premiership for season 2016-2017. Other great performers on the day were:

Noah Croes who wicket kept brilliantly with 3 catches; Lachie Bangs who not only bowled 6 overs and took

1/11, but took an incredibly athletic outfield catch to dismiss a dangerous Carey batsman;

Chris Jackson who was part of that important 34 run last wicket partnership, bowled 9 overs and took 1/16, and fielded brilliantly;

Charlie Cormack – again our late order saviour with the bat, bowled 14 overs taking 1/29, and again took a great catch;

Will Lovell – opening the batting and bowling as a Year 10 student in a Premiership winning team -

Incredible! The Loveridge boys – who came down and supported

despite their illness; Oliver McLeish – who gave his heart and soul for the

team; just wished I had heard his (and Jacko’s theme for the day story at tea).

Matt Cheah and James Gray - who both oozed the team 1st mentality

Ben Bromell and Harry Stubbings – who seamlessly made their debuts with some solid batting and field-ing.

Will Clark – an important innings that helped us recover from 5/88.

Rupert Hardie – our most consistent, year in, year out performer, who never falters as our scorer and #1 supporter at the same time!

Our parent group who again went above and beyond the call of duty with their delicious food and hospitality (I personally loved the Toasties).

Our next challenge is next week at Haileybury as we chal-lenge ourselves again to go through the APS season unde-feated. This team deserve it.

MATCH REPORTS FROM MARCH 18 Second XI Scotch 4/104 def. BGS 103 (Adams 59 (n.o) Wynne 3/22) A comprehensive victory against BGS on the Meares. BGS won the toss and elected to bat on a great deck that is probably one of the better ones in all of Australia in fact the world. Openers Fraser-Smith and Wynne by bowling good line and lengths (which was even more impressive as the ball was dripping with the early morning dew) made sure that the BGS bats were not going to dictate terms. Wynne was superb with the ball taking 3/22 off 9 overs. Rubins fi-nally got the rewards he deserved with 2/9 off 6 and the very, very successful bowling partnership of Roseby 2/14 off 6 and Easton 2/14 off 6 helped keep the required runs to win to a total of 104.However the story of the day belonged to Luke Adams batting for the first time in the 2nds. Opener Adams 59 n.o played an excellent innings and looked right at home with his range of shot selections and his continually turning over of the strike. He and Ben Lloyd (19) put on a handy opening partnership of 40. Hugo Carson contributed 14 and before we knew it we were up supporting the 1sts as they won the APS Competition on the Main.

Third XI After a rare loss of the toss our opponent Xavier decided to bat. With a few strong batsman our bowlers performed very well. Adams coming down to the 3rds was the best for scotch taking 3 wickets. Xavier ended up on 145 off 27 overs. With a tough task on hand our batsman just got off to a slow start which we couldn't make up all day. Efforts from Nash shaw made the target look achievable in stages but no one could really go on with it. We came 28 runs short but a well battled game until the end.

10As Scotch 138 def. Haileybury College 49 Before Saturday’s match against Haileybury, our last for the season, I challenged the boys that the game would be defining. A win would allow us to categorise the season as a very good season. A loss would relegate the season to the good category. Whilst the wicket didn’t look great we decided to bat upon winning the toss. Tom Buchanan (8) and Cameron Hemp (19) got us off to a solid start before Will Steventon (24) joined Cameron to put on 38 for the second wicket. We were cruising at 1 for 53, which quickly became 6 for 64! Losing 5 for 11 put us right on the back foot, and it took some disciplined, smart, composed batting from Angus Parnham (33) and Justin Baumgarten (13) to get things back on track. Tom Hunt, inspired by his one not out the previous week, went on to make a very important 13 and with Charlie Veitch (12 not out) put on 26 handy runs for the final wicket which got us to 138 – at least something to de-fend. We again got off to the best possible start, having Haileybury 3 for 9 in the ninth over. Tom Hunt (3 for 11 off 6 overs) and Angus Parnham (1 for 3 off 5 overs) bowled with great control and intent, as they have done all season. Justin Baumgarten (2 for 9 off 6 overs) and Tom Buchanan (3 for 20 off 8 overs) picked up where the opening bowlers left off and we bowled Haileybury out for 49 in the 27th over, giving us time to head back to Scotch to watch the first XI defeat Carey to win the APS cricket premiership. Our result on Saturday means it has been a very good season, and I thank the boys for the privilege of coaching them. I also thank Nick Sparks for his great support as Assistant Coach. I also thank our parents for being such positive influences both at home and on match days.

10Bs On a seriously warm Saturday afternoon the 10C's went in to bat first against a full strength Xavier side. Our stocks were somewhat depleted but spirits were high and the team were confident in their abilities. We lost Mackenzie early in the piece, however Gordon and McAllister put on 63 in their second wicket partnership to steady the ship and set up a solid score. McAllister batted throughout the 25 overs to make a brilliant 55* which included plenty of excellent crick-et shots. Our total of 118 certainly looked defendable. Mackenzie (3/10 off 4) bowled extremely well against Xavier's top order, whilst Gordon was extremely unlucky not to have a few wickets as edges flew over gully. Costa produced a very tight bowling spell taking 2/6 off 3 over, leaving Xavier on the ropes at 7/76, and victory was in our sights. Unfor-tunately, Xavs rallied and put a solid 9th wicket partnership to steady the ship, and hit the winning runs in the 22nd over. It must be said if we had a full XI in , the result may have been well different...

9As Haileybury 91 (49 Overs) Scotch 91/6 (39 Overs), Scotch won by 4 wickets. Travelling to Berwick for our match against Haileybury on Saturday was quite refreshing from an urban perspective. Berwick, situated in the hinterland, has a definite sense on community and country feel, a slower pace of life is certain-ly noticeable. It was a good day, starting off very pleasantly, blue skies with a slight breeze, and then becoming hotter and more humid in the afternoon. We lost the toss and were requested to bowl, which ironically, worked in our favour. After the 13th Over, Haileybury were 3/15, and after the 20th they were 5/23 . This was largely due to some really good bowling by Henry (2/10, 7 Overs), Nicholas (1/12, 6 Overs), Griffin (1/6, 6 Overs) and Sam (2/12, 6 Overs). The Haileybury batsmen never got going and scoring looked difficult. We seemed to take the foot off the pedal and switch off as a result of not much happening and allowed the opposition to score probably 25 runs more than they should have. Some tidy bowling by Tyler (2/6, 5 Overs), Shaun (0/7, 4 Overs), Will (0/13, 5 Overs), Sam Harle (0/5, 6 Overs) and Reef (1/5, 3 Overs), finally ended Haileybury’s innings for a total of 91 runs. Once again, we had 9 bowlers bowl-ing - so encouraging to see! The chase started well, albeit slowly, with Alex (10) and Hugo (14) finding it equally as difficult to dispatch anything through the covers. A lack of concentration and intent along with amounting pressure very nearly cost us the match. If it wasn’t for Jesse coming in and steadying the ship with a very well-played 39, the tail would certainly have had to wag! It took a while, but eventually we managed to grind it out and win the match by 4 wickets. 8 out of 8, well done boys! Now for the final match of the season coming up this Saturday on Meares.

9Bs Caulfield 10-97 (Tommy Hill 3/5, Harry Parsons 2/12) were defeated by Scotch 8-98 (Charlie Smith 21, Sam Prior 13) Facing off against Caulfield Grammar for the second time this season, the 9Bs travelled to Wheelers Hill on what was a cold and dewy Saturday morning. Losing the toss, our boys were asked to field first. Openers, Joe Balderstone (1/14) and Alex Cross (0/18) looked sharp before a well-placed cut shot made its way under a fence and the new ball was lost to the Wheeler’s Hill bushland. Even with the handicap of a significantly older replacement ball, skipper Harry Parsons (2/12) bowled superbly, sending down two maidens and conceding an economy rate of just 2 runs per over. Though Caulfield scored quickly, their innings was marred by the regular intervals at which they lost wickets. Will Rice (1/13), Sam Prior (1/14) and Angus Wells (1/3) all contributed with the ball, while Gill Roseby claimed three catches with the gloves. Produc-ing his season best figures, Tommy Hill (3/5) returned 3 maidens from his five overs and was certainly the pick of the bow-lers. Chasing Caulfield’s total of 10/97, Scotch embarked on what proved to be tricky run chase. Throughout our innings, runs flowed, but wickets tumbled. A gutsy knock from Charlie Smith (21) brought the total to 6-64 from 17 overs, before Sam Prior (13) and Christian Alateras (12) shared an innings-high partnership of 21 to bring us just 13 runs away from vic-tory. However, disaster struck as Prior and Alateras’ wickets fell in quick succession. It was only through the immense tem-perament of Harry Parsons (8*) and his partner Tommy Hill (5*) that we managed to pass Caulfield’s total in the 27th over and claim victory by 2 wickets.

8Cs Playing across the road at HA Smith Reserve, and with Xavier having a bit of confusion with the start time, Scotch allowed them to bat first so that their players could arrive and we could start on time for the 20/20. We got off to a solid start with David Nawaratne and Western opening the bowling and keeping things tidy, despite the aggressive mindset of the opposi-tion who were constantly looking to play shots. Alex Winton bowled superbly with his off breaks, taking 3/5 off two overs in his come back from injury in a very impressive display. Tom Bishop has been improving his cricket all season, and bowled well to take 1/5 off his two overs. James Blair was doing his best behind the stumps, and continues to get better each week. Xavier put on a total of 89 off their 20 overs which was definitely within our reach. Permezel (17*) and Dans (9) got us off to a great start with their selfless approach to the run chase. JP has really proven himself to be quite the all rounder, and top scored with 21*, which included some excellent cover drives. We hit the winning runs in the second last over, chasing down 90 with to win by 3 wickets.

7As Scotch (6 – 195) defeated St Kevin’s (6 – 82) Player of the Match: Charlie Ward The 7A1 team returned home to take on arch rival St Kevin’s on the McKendrick Oval. Captain Will Townsend won the toss (a rare event this year!) and, with the outfield small, fast and dewy, had no hesitation in batting first. After losing both openers to some fast and accurate inswing bowling, Townsend, batting at first drop, knew a Captain’s knock was in order – and he didn’t disappoint, posting a magnificent 39 not out, including five boundaries and a towering six, in a batting masterclass rarely seen at this level. Not to be outdone by the heroics of their skipper, Sam Dethridge and Charlie Ward also retired undefeated, reaching 37 and 35, respectively. Dethridge’s innings was characterised by his deft footwork, allowing him to turn ostensibly good balls into scoring opportunities, whilst Ward, solid as ever, employed his im-peccable technique to great effect, lashing many runs between point and cover with his signature cut shot. With the addition of some entertaining cameos late in the innings by Tom Sutherland and Eddie Shearer, the latter of whom dispatched the final ball of the innings “high, wide and handsome” over the midwicket boundary, Scotch reached the formidable total of 195 from their allotted 30 overs. After some impressive early shot making by the St Kevin’s openers, George Burney was rewarded for some excellent new ball bowling with the first wicket of the innings. Having seen off the Scotch openers the St Kevin’s top order was hoping for some respite, and a chance to begin their improbable chase in earnest.

Although news of Scotch’s bowling depth hadn’t “crossed the ditch” prior to the match, it certainly will afterwards, thanks to accurate and menacing spells by Sutherland, Joel Bennet, Will Hucker, and debutant Josh Bienert whose pace, control and variation were particularly impressive. In an imposing display of bowling and fielding, including a high-ly polished wicket keeping performance by Ward and a catch by Townsend described by one pundit as “the best ever seen in schoolboy cricket”, Scotch kept St Kevin’s to just 82 from their 30 overs and secured a ruthlessly clinical victory. Just one win away from the perfect season, this team has stamped itself as one of the most talented and dedicated Year 7 outfits to take the field under cardinal caps in recent memory.

7A Blues Scotch 7A Blues 9-132 (28.4) defeated Wesley 8-128 (29) On a cool and dewy morning on the Rugby Oval, Wesley won the toss and decided to bat. They started steadily but with confidence. However, they were confined to a run rate of just 3-an-over due to some economical bowling from the Scotch bowlers, especially Jack Ross and Sam Norman, both taking a wicket each. With the Wesley players keen to build a decent score, they starting pushing for more boundaries and singles and carried the score on to 3-100 from 23 overs. After two of the Wesley players were retired having scored 30 runs, the lower middle order came out with intent with just a few overs left of the innings. There were a few wild shots and some half-chances dropping between fielders, but some excellent run scoring also. With 28 overs completed, Wesley stood at 5-125. The final over saw a flurry of wickets as Hector Wild took 3 in an over to take his figures for the day to 3-15 from 4 overs and leave Wesley 8-128. It was an excellent overall fielding performance from the Scotch players, who were well-spirited and ably-lead by captain-of-the-day Andrew Callaghan. With the sun blazing and the oval drying out, 129 looked a gettable score. The Scotch players pushed from the get-go, with Sam Norman scoring quickly before being stumped, on his final ball before being retired, for 30. After a couple of loose wickets, Lochie Cash steadied the ship with a patient 30 runs, showing some excellent shot selection before retir-ing with Scotch looking comfortable at 3-74 from 17 overs. However, with Lochie gone, Scotch lost some self-discipline and gave away a few wickets before reaching 6-100 from 21. Suddenly the game was looking close. Ian Macgibbon-Parker made a quick fire 16 to get Scotch back into contention, but after he was caught and bowled, scoring came to a near stand-still for a couple of overs. The pressure was mounting; Scotch lost 2 players to run-outs leaving them 8-119 needing 10 to win off 2 overs. Declan Hamm, making his debut for the 7A Blues and having had an outstanding and energetic performance as wicket-keeper, hit a couple of important boundaries to take the scores level heading into the final over. Scotch were now 9 down; the Wesley players, hopeful of taking the final wicket, had everybody in close. It was an incredibly tense final over, but Hector Wild, bringing up the tail end today, managed to find a route through the fielders to win it for Scotch with 2 balls to spare.

7B Reds The boys travelled to Geelong t take on Geelong Grammar in what turned out to be a close encounter down to the wire. We set a decent total of 114 to defend from 25 overs, with Ferguson and Chambers both playing smart, positive in-nings' for 27 and 29 respectively. The defence started well as McKenzie (4/13) took three wickets in his opening spell. The boys took constant wickets throughout, but some big hitters in the opposition middle order looked like they would win the game for Grammar. Seb (1/17) took a crucial wicket to break a big partnership whilst Roberts and Wilkinson chipped in with a wicket apiece. Taylor and Iser bowled very economically at the death, whilst McKenzie finished the innings with his fourth wicket and restricting Grammar to 9/106.

7Cs A visit to Geelong College didn't phase the 7C Blue's as they continued their unbeaten run in 2017. Batting first on a large ground or openers Ben Bell and Tom Sellers Jones got us off to a great start reaching 33 and 28 respectively. Both played great cricket shots and it was great to see them score well and they were the driving force to reaching the team total or 141, one of our biggest scores this season. In the second innings our bowlers went about defending the total. Sam Lidstone bowled well taking 2/10, whilst Lachie McMurterie bowled consistently taking 1/9. Another great performance in the field with few misfields and overthrows. It is great t see the team improving each week and lets hope the team finish's off the season well next week
