They not only have summer camps, but it is used most week-endsthroughout the year by other Christian groups. V/hile she was here,Mrs. Sophia Mac Kay of Corbett, Oregon came for a couple of v/eeks.V/e enjoyed every minute of their visits, and they enjoyed each other.

Gerry took my Mom back to the U.S. in early Hay and spoke atthe Faith-Promise Rally at Rosemead,CR. Church of Christ(L.R. area),one of our faithful supporters thru the years. On the way back hewas able to visit his 87 year old mother who is in a rest home inSan Diego county; also his brother and sister and their families.

Becky finished primary schooKgrammar school) in June. Panchoand Veva, v;ho are both slov; learners, were promoted to their lastyea" of grammar school. Each one had to have a nev; Folk Dance outfit for the end-of-school program, so I spent time at the sewing machine.'V/ished for Mother then as she sews beautifully as v/ell. as cooks 1(Made me a couple of dravz-string upolstery material purses while shewas here.)."

V/e had night V.B.S. in the villago,^ of La Mesa. Each of our cityyoung people had a group of 10-15. Think they, as leaders, enjoyedit more than the students did. V/e missed one night bridgeover thearroyo, about 1 1/2 miles from La Mesa, was not finished and it rainedback in the hills, so the arroyo was running water several feet deep.\/e went as far as the arroyo, then sent the materials on by "shank'smare", ^ad had to take a bunch of disappointed teenagers back home.

Eacn summerwe help vzith the Child Evangelism camp. I'm chiefcook, and the children serve as junior counselors. Camp was in Aug.this year and mosquitos had a perfect attendance record in fact Ithini-c all of them in the Hermosillo area attended in massi Some ofthe children looked like they had measles after the first night! Thedirector of camp, Miss Miranda, said most of the kids are "dead-end"(ghetto) kids, and she wanted to do something special for them, sowe had a banquet. Rosa_JLva and I made 120 hamburgers here at thehouse, then served them with potato salad, carrot sticks c: re-friedbeans to II8 people. L sit-down evening meal, complete v;ith a finemusical program you'd have to see our primative facilities to knowv/hat a feat that v/as! Everyone was happy, happy, happy.

Kathy spent 7 v;eeks with the Rummer World institute of Missions(3.V/.I.M.) group of Bible college students and counselors in and around

Jiexico _City. She v;as student, teacher., nurse, counselor, interpreter, and a fev; other things, I'm sure. She was back here at the righttime to get Becky and Malena registered in secondary school(h.s.),the same one she attended. Many of the same teachers are still there,so .she enjoyed getting to see several of her "old" teachers. Beckyis studying for a Bi-lengual, Executive Secretary certificate, andMalena is working tov/ard a certificate in Dress Designing(This inaddition to their regular college preparatory studies!).

While Kathy v;as here she told us about a certain young man v/howas on a similar internship in Europe with Toronto Christian Mission.(He graduated in June from San Jose(CA.) Bible College.). This v;efoimd very interesting' of course! She had only been back in SanJose, where she is emj oyed in an I.C.U. at one of the hospitals, for a few days v.hen we got a phone call "Hov/ would you like to havea couple of visitors for a few days?" This time she was not comingalone she v;as bringing Dale R. Gibson from Elmira, Oregon(nearEugene) along with her.

  • -3- Dec. 197^

They arrived on Gerry's birthday, Sept.55 told us theyv; ould like oir permission to be married at the close of the year, and our blessings on the uork he felt called of the Lord to do.(After all, Austria is JjOOO miles from i-iexicoi). Yes, Kathy, ourM.K., and nov/ a very capable H.N., has finally found someone v/hofilled the high Christian standards she had set for a husband, andvie agree v;ith her choice, v/holeheartedly, (Gerry told Dale: "Youare surely a fine Christian young man, Dale, if our daughter choseyou for her husband.").

Two young college men, Alfredo and Jorge, friends and neighborsof our youngsters, v/ere baptized in September, and are taking activeparts in the services, both at Colonia Olivares and in the youthwork.(Jule Miller "Cottage Meeting" filmstrips v/ith cassette commentary in Spanish also greatly accelerated their decision. Again, ourthanks to the Youth Group of Maryvale Ariz. Christian church, andDarrell Olsen of the Glendale Ariz. Christian Church.).

Because they do not have bus service to the city at night,we have been taking our young people to the youth meetings in thevillage of La Mesa each Saturday nite attendance varies from 25to 50. (Tf we o^^st had a bus of our ovm we could bring them in everyother Saturday night.), lie are planning a Banquet for the youth atthe end of November It should prove interesting as this is thefirst time v;e have made them make reservations ahead of time, andpay for their own tickets.). The villages are more receptive tothe Gospel than the cities, though v/hen we came here years ago thevillages were then fanatically set against Christianityi

On Nov. 18th v;e rounded out 19 years living in Hermosillo, acity of 225,000. V7e have seen many changes, and made many friends.(Pop. was 50,000 in .19550' The cost of living here has increasedseveral times over like eyeryv;here else in the v/orld, and v;e can onlydo as we did way back then depend on the Lord to "supply our everyneed according to His riches in Glory by Christ Jesus."

Kathy and Dale are to be married on Dec. 27th at the MaryvaleCliristian Church in Phoenix, Arizona. Gerry will perform the ceremony, as he did for Bob, and I will make their wedding cake, as Ihave done for Bob and Oscar. They plan to spend the month of Januaryin the Eugene, Ore. area to raise support for the Mission. Then inFebruary and March they plan, to-be in Toronto, Canada in intensiveGerman studies, April vdll find them, the Lord willing, travellingto Austria, there to continue their study of German, and labor asMissionaries to the youth of the "Sattelite" countries vdth theToronto Christian Mission group.

The Directors of the Toronto Christian Mission advised themnot to take household goodsbr supplies v;ith them, as dutyon foreign(U.STT goods is high, and freight expensive. IT HAS BEEN SUGGESTED,that instead of purchasing gifts for the bride and groom, that thosev;ho vlsh may send a check in place of a wedding gift, enclosing anote stating what you would have given them. Then Dale and Kathy, after they arrive in Europe, can buy what you had in mind for them.

Mrs. Margaret Kinman will receive these "House-V7arming" funds forthem. Thus you may send your congratulations, and a check, if youw ish, to Dale and Kathy at the following address:

As the year 197^ drav;s to a close we vilsh to say "Thank You" toour Heavenly Father; and to you, our faithful friends, for your partin keeping us here, working for our Lord in V/estern Mexico. Ue havehad disappointments, sorrov/s and trials, just as you have had thispast year, but we have also had many joys, and rejoice that othershave heard the Good Nev/s of Salvation thru our combined effortsyours, ours, and our faithful Mexican Christians'. All here ask thatyou continue to remember us with your gifts and offerings, and aboveall, v;ith your prayers. Pray too for Aathy and Dale as they begintheir life together in the Lord's service in Europe. Pray also forour children here at home, and for us as v/e guide them, and others,as well, by our lives and our words(May both be "by the BOOK".).
