2011 Spring Preview:

Falcons Poised to RetuRn to FoRm in clawson’s thiRd YeaR

The Bowling Green State University football team finished 2010 with a 2-10 overall and 1-7 MAC re-cord, after finishing the 2009 campaign at 7-6 overall and advancing to the Humanitarian Bowl. While 2010 was a disappointing season, third-year head coach Dave Clawson, combined with the return of 12 starters, 66 players with at least three years of eligibility remaining and all but one of his assistant coaches from 2010, gives Clawson and the Falcons a foundation to build upon for years to come.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Falcons return seven starters (only two will seniors in 2011), led by sophomore quarterback Matt Schilz, who started 10 games as a freshman, and threw for 2,223 yards and eight touchdowns. His top game of 2010 may have been at Temple where he threw for 287 yards and a touchdown, nearly leading the Falcons back from 14 points down in the fourth quarter.

Schilz top offensive target in 2010 was Kamar Jorden, who finished the season with 96 catches for 1,109 yards and four touchdowns. He was also the lone Falcon to earn first-team All-MAC honors.Spring 2011

Four starters return from last season, led by senior center Ben Bojicic. Bojicic is a two-time Rimington Award preseason team member (Nation’s top center). The 2010 captain will also have Chip Robinson, Jordon Roussos and Dominic Flewellyn returning for 2011.

Defensively, the Falcons will also return seven starters (four will be seniors in 2011) with a pair of defensive lineman, one linebacker and four members of the secondary. Scouting the FalconsQuarterbacksLettermen Returning: 2, Lettermen Lost: 0Starters Returning: 1, Starters Lost: 0Matt Schilz will begin camp as the Falcons’ starter after throw-ing for 2,223 yards and eight touchdowns in 2010. He had seven 200-yard games in his first year as a starter, throwing for a ca-reer-best 287 yards in a near come-from-behind win at Temple. Red-shirt freshman Trent Hurley found himself on the two-deep in the second half of 2010 and is expected to push Schilz for playing time in 2011. Junior Aaron Pankratz will add depth to the program.

Running BacksLettermen Returning: 3, Lettermen Lost: 1Starters Returning: 0, Starters Lost: 1Willie Geter, who finished his career in 2010 and ended that same career in the top-10 in rush-ing yards in school history, is gone, but what returns is still a handful of talented tailbacks. Jordan Hopgood is the top returner after finishing 2010 with 167 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He was also a factor in the passing game, recording 10 catches for 60 yards. Erique Geiger and John Pettigrew return for their third year and redshirt freshman Jamel Martin is also expected to make an impact this season.

Local product Zach Akenberger (FB) will return for his fourth year with the Falcons and is hopeful to return to form after suffering a broken leg last season.

Clawson brings 22 years of coaching experience, including 11 years of head coaching experience, most recently at Richmond (2004-07) and Fordham (1999-2003), where he combined for a 58-49 record. In 2007 he led the Richmond Spiders to the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision semifinals.

Clawson twice has been named national Division I-AA Coach of the Year, winning once at Fordham and once at Richmond, and was named his league’s coach of the year four times in a seven-year span. In 2005 and 2007, the Richmond Touchdown

Club selected him College Coach of the Year, and he was an Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year Award Finalist in 2002 and 2005.

In his first year at BGSU he led the Falcons to a 7-6 record and an appearance in the Humanitarian Bowl. He helped direct an offense that featured Biletnikoff Award finalist Freddie Barnes to a nation’s best 155 receptions (NCAA record), while also earning first-team All-MAC honors. Clawson continued that trend in 2010, helping Kamar Jordan lead the conference with 96 catches, also earning first-team All-MAC accolades. The 251 receptions by Barnes and Jorden are the most in the country by different receivers in the past two seasons.

Prior to BGSU, his two head coaching jobs resurrected first Fordham, boosting a Rams program coming off 12 straight losing seasons into NCAA playoff participants, and then Richmond, which twice advanced to the postseason. Before that, Clawson called the offensive plays for another pair of Division I-AA powerhouses in Lehigh and Villanova.

Quarterback development and pro production have been Clawson staples. Nine times in his 16 years as ei-ther an offensive coordinator or head coach, Clawson’s quarterbacks earned all-conference honors, including BGSU’s Tyler Sheehan, who threw for a school record 4,051 yards in 2009.

In addition, NFL regulars such as two-time 1,000-yard rusher Brian Westbrook (Eagles), receiver Brian Finneran (Falcons), tailbacks Rabih Abdullah (Buccaneers, Bears and Patriots) and Tim Hightower (Cardi-nals), quarterbacks Stacey Tutt (Jets) and Kevin Eakin (Bills), and defensive lineman Aki Jones (Redskins), played for Clawson.

In 1998 he accepted the head coaching position at Fordham, where he became the youngest Division I head coach in the nation (31). His 19 combined victories during his final two years (2002-03) at Fordham were the most wins there in back-to-back seasons since 1918-19.

Then he guided Richmond to the biggest two-year turnaround in Spider football’s 124-year history, improv-ing from 3-8 his first season of 2004 to 9-4 and an NCAA playoff berth the following year.

A native of Youngstown, N.Y., located on the shores of Lake Ontario just 30 minutes north of Buffalo, Clawson played defensive back in football and also basketball at Williams College in Massachusetts. He graduated in 1989, and then began a two-year assistant coaching stop at Albany. From there, he coached two years at Buffalo and three at Lehigh, including his first two years, 1994-95, as an offensive coordinator.

Clawson then was named offensive coordinator at Villanova, where he helped establish 70 school records and led the Wildcats to the I-AA playoffs in 1996 and 1997. Under Clawson’s tutelage, receiver Brian Finneran won the Walter Payton Award, given to I-AA’s most outstanding player, and running back Brian Westbrook became the first student-athlete in NCAA history to gain more than 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving in a season.

Clawson and his wife, Catherine, are the parents of two children, Courtney and Eric.

CoaChing StaffWarren Ruggiero Delaware, 1988Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks

Warren Ruggiero begins his third year as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Bowling Green State University.

In his first year at the helm of the Falcon offense he led a unit that ranked first in the MAC and sixth nationally in passing yards per game (316.2). Standout quarterback Tyler Sheehan finished the year completing 373 of 575 passes for 4,051 yards and 27 touchdowns, all career-bests under the guidance of Ruggiero. In fact, his 4,051 passing yards were only the second time in BGSU’s 90-year history that a Falcon quarterback had surpassed the 4,000 yard plateau.

Ruggiero also played a large role in helping wide receiver Freddie Barnes earn national honors, being named a Biletnikoff finalist, given to the country’s top wide receiver. In 2009 alone Barnes led the country in receptions (155) and touchdowns (19), while ranking second in yards (1,770). Barnes’ 155 catches smashed the previous NCAA mark for catches in a season, previ-ously held by Manny Hazzard (Houston) since 1989.

In 2010 Ruggerio took an offense that featured a first-year starting quarterback, along with a total of eight new starters and still produced an offense that averaged 21.2 points per game. He also helped Kamar Jordan earn first-team All-MAC status after leading the conference with 96 catches.

Ruggiero has Northwest Ohio ties, having served as the running backs coach, quarterbacks coach, offensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator for Defiance for five seasons (1989-93).

Ruggiero spent the 2008 past season as the quarterbacks coach at Kansas State where he helped lead the Wildcat signal callers to a combined 59-percent completion percentage, 3,235 yards and 20 scores. The KSU quarterbacks also threw just 10 interceptions in 425 passes. As good as the KSU quarterbacks were at throwing the ball, they also added 464 yards and 15 scores on the ground, helping the Kansas State offense to an average of 34.9 points and 402.1 yards per game.

Ruggiero spent one season coaching quarterback Josh Freeman, who declared early for the 2009 NFL draft. Freeman was selected with the 17th pick in the draft by the Tampa Bay Buc-caneers.

It won’t be the first time Ruggiero helped coach a player to the NFL. In 2005 he coached future New Orleans Saints wide receiver Marques Colston, who was named to the NFL All-Rookie Team that next season.

Ruggiero brings 22 years of coaching experience to the Falcons, including two as a head coach and 17 years as an offensive coordinator at some of the best offenses in the country. Under his guidance as a coordinator his offenses have finished in the top-10 statistically on 11 different occasions.

Prior to his time at Kansas State, Ruggiero was already an accomplished offensive coach who spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Elon, where he tutored quarterback Scott Riddle, who was dubbed the 2007 College Sporting News National Fresh-man of the Year after a monstrous rookie campaign.

Prior to his arrival at Elon, Ruggiero spent the previous six years at Hofstra, serving the first two seasons (2000-01) as the recruiting coordinator/quarterbacks coach and the last four (2002-05) as the offensive coordinator.

Previously, he coached the halfbacks and tight ends at The College of William and Mary dur-ing the 1999 campaign.

Prior to going to William & Mary, Ruggiero was the head coach, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Glenville State College for two seasons (1997-98); the quarterbacks coach, running backs coach and offensive coordinator at Clarion University of Pennsylvania for three seasons (1994-96) and a graduate assistant at the University of Delaware for the 1988 campaign.

Ruggiero and his wife, Jennifer, have one daughter, Emma.

Mike ElkoDefensive Coordinator/Inside LinebackersPennsylvania, 1999

Mike Elko begins his third year as the defensive coordinator with the Falcons after holding the same position at Hofstra from 2006-08.

In his first year with the Falcon defense he took eight first-year starters and trans-formed them into a unit that forced 12 turnovers in the last three regular season games in 2009. Elko’s defense was also tops in the MAC on third downs, allowing a success rate of just 36.5 percent.

Elko’s defense continued the turnover trend in 2010, forcing 29, the second-most in the conference and fifth-most in the nation. Elko also helped mold linebacker Dwayne Woods into an all-conference performer, as the then sophomore led the Mid-American Conference with 134 tackles, earning second-team all-MAC honors.

Elko has seven years of defensive coordinating experience under his belt, as well as experience working with BGSU head coach Dave Clawson at Fordham and Richmond.

Prior to joining the Falcons, Elko coached the No. 1 passing defense in the Colonial Athletic Association last season with Hofstra, holding teams to just 136.8 yards per game through the air.

Hofstra’s defense ranked first in the CAA and 11th in the FCS in rushing defense, second in the conference and 15th in the country in total defense, and fourth in the CAA and 37th in the FCS in scoring defense in 2007.

In 2006 Elko directed the defensive backs in addition to his defensive coordinator duties. The Pride’s defense ranked in the top half of the conference in total defense, scoring defense, rushing defense and passing defense.

Elko came to Hofstra after two seasons as linebackers coach and special teams coor-dinator at the University of Richmond. His first recruiting class at Richmond was a large part of the Spiders’ 9-4 record, including a 7-1 slate in the Atlantic 10 in 2005. Richmond defeated Hampton, 38-10, in the first round of the I-AA playoffs before dropping a 24-20 decision at Furman.

The Spiders ranked 12th in the FCS in scoring defense, allowing just 17.7 points per game, and 22nd in rushing defense, allowing just 120.1 yards per contest. Before coaching at Richmond, Elko worked with current head football coach Dave Clawson at Fordham University as his linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator in 2002 and 2003. While at Fordham, Elko coached a defense that led the Patriot League in scoring defense (14th nationally in 2002) and sacks, as well as ranking third with 25 turnovers caused in 2002. In 2003 the Rams led the league in pass defense.

Elko’s coaching experience also includes time at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he served as defensive coordinator. He also coached at his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, directing the secondary. He began his coaching career at Stony Brook in 1999 where he guided the linebackers in the fall and the defensive backs in the spring.

A member of the Penn football team for four years, Elko helped the Quakers win the Ivy League title in 1998. He received a bachelor’s degree in history in 1999.

Mike and his wife Michelle, have three children, Michael, Andrew and Kaitlyn.

CoaChing StaffJohn Hunter Bowling Green, 1988Running Backs/Recruiting

John Hunter will begin his sixth year on the Falcon coaching staff, serving as the team’s running backs coach and is in his third year as the recruiting coordinator for the Orange and Brown.

Hunter molded Willie Geter into a third-team All-MAC performer as a senior in 2010, and helped him finish his career with 2,156 rushing yards, eighth-most in school history.

Hunter helped coach a pair of running backs in Geter and Chris Bullock to combine for 1,027 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2009. The running back posi-tion in BGSU’s offensive scheme is also asked to pass block regularly, a unit that allowed just 27 sacks (2.1/game) despite throwing the ball more than any other team in the MAC.

Despite constant injuries in the backfield, Hunter helped coach a quartet of tailbacks to average 4.93 yards per carry in 2008, finishing the season with 1,192 yards and nine touchdowns.

In 2007, Hunter’s running backs recorded 1,607 yards on the ground, led by former quarterback Anthony Turner (519). True freshman Willie Geter chipped in with 432 yards and Chris Bullock had 281.

In 2006, he saw the Falcons lead the MAC, averaging 176.6 yards per game, and oversaw the development of freshman All-American Chris Bullock.

From 2000 to 2006, Hunter served as the head football and boys track and field coach at Pershing High School in Detroit. On the gridiron, his teams were 40-28 and made four state playoff appearances in his six years after the school had made just one state playoff appearances in its history prior to his arrival. He led Pershing to two district titles, two regional championship games and one Detroit P.S.L. playoff nod.

Hunter, who graduated from BGSU in 1988, was a four-year starter at line-backer and twice was named first-team All-MAC (1986 and 1987). For his career, he had 336 tackles, including 44 for loss, and was a member of a 1985 MAC Championship team. Following his senior year, he signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers. Prior to his stint at Pershing High School, Hunter was an assistant coach at St. Martin DePorres in 1989 and from 1994-99. He was the defensive backs coach for a team which won the state championship in 1989 and was defensive coordinator from 1994-99, also winning state titles in 1995 and 1996. As a player, he also played on state title teams at DePorres in 1981 and 1982.

A native of Detroit, he and his wife, Amara, have a son, John and a daughter, Justiss.

Mark CarneyWide ReceiversFordham, 2002

Mark Carney will begin his third year as the wide receivers coach at Bowling Green.

Carney is making it a habit of producing first-team All-MAC performers, as well as wide receivers that put up numbers that are comparable to anyone in the nation.

In his first year with the Orange and Brown he helped coach Freddie Barnes, a Biletnikoff Award finalist to national recognition. Barnes, who would appear on ESPN’s First Take, the Dan Patrick Show and handled many other interviews led the country in receptions (155) and touchdowns (16), while finishing second in the nation in yards (1,770).

This past season he followed up the Barnes extravaganza with a new Falcon, Kamar Jorden. In his first year with the Orange and Brown Jorden led the conference with 96 catches and finished the year with 1,109 yards and four touchdowns. The catches and yards ranked third in school history. In a two year span the Falcons’ top wideout has combined for 251 catches, most among any duo in the country in that span.

Carney, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, brings several years of Ohio recruiting experience to the Orange and Brown. The third year Falcon coach also helped mentor a former Richmond quarterback to NFL status and played under Dave Clawson at Fordham, earning all-league honors as a quarterback in 2001.

In 2008 Carney coached wide receivers at Richmond, where he helped the Spiders to the FCS National Championship. Under Carney’s teaching, Kevin Grayson led the team with 61 receptions and 853 yards. It was Carney’s first year coaching the wide receiver position. He spent the previous four years as the Spiders’ quarterback coach.

As the coach for the Spider signal callers, Carney oversaw the development of former Spiders Stacy Tutt and Eric Ward into two of the most productive quarterbacks in school history.

Ward finished his sophomore season with a single-season school record 216 completions for 2,341 passing yards -- the fourth-best single-season mark by a quarterback, surpassing the 2,219 yards thrown by Tutt in 2005.

Tutt was a free-agent signee by the New York Jets in the spring of 2006 and graduated from Richmond as the school’s all-time single-season leader in total offense with 3,047 yards (828 rushing, 2,219 passing) and 12 touchdowns.

A standout quarterback who earned All-Patriot League and All-American honors in 2001, Carney spent 2002 and 2003 working with current BGSU head coach Dave Clawson at Carney’s alma mater, Fordham. While with the Rams, Carney helped guide Kevin Eakin, a program record-holder, to all-conference honors his final two seasons. Eakin went on to play professionally in the NFL for the N.Y. Jets and Buffalo Bills and for Hamilton in the CFL.

Mark and his wife, Sarah, have one daughter, Devyn and are expecting their second child this winter.

CoaChing StaffAdam ScheierSpecial Teams/Tight EndsDartmouth, 1995

Adam Scheier begins his third year with Bowling Green State University. He will coach the special teams and tight ends for the Orange and Brown.

Last season the Falcons’ special teams units returned three kicks for scores, including a pair of punt returns by Eugene Cooper, who earned second-team All-MAC for his efforts. As a unit, the Falcons ranked second in the MAC with an 11.1 yard punt return average. Freshman Boo Boo Gates added a 75-yard kick return for a score versus Kent State. Scheier’s special teams units made impact plays in 2009 as well, blocking four punts, including a pair versus Toledo in a 38-24 win.

Scheier, who also coaches tieght ends at Bowling Green, has helped produce Jimmy Scheidler, a second-team All-MAC performer in 2009 and a Phil Steele Fourth-Team member in Alex Bayer, who earned the honor as a freshman.

Prior to his time at BGSU, Scheier spent seven seasons overseeing the special teams units at Lehigh, was also responsible for the wide receivers position the for four years, in an offensive system much like Coach Clawson implemented for the Falcons. Scheier also spent three seasons as Lehigh’s running backs coach.

In 2008, the Lehigh wide receivers finished with the top two spots on the team’s reception list, led by Mike Fitzgerald, who had 51 catches, including 11 touchdowns.

In 2007, the Mountain Hawk receivers helped Lehigh average over 200 receiving yards per game, while seven players hauled in a touchdown reception, and seven different receivers caught at least ten passes. 2005’s receiving corps – under the direction of Scheier for the first time – was one of Lehigh’s best in recent memory. Four players amassed over 300 receiving yards, and 11 different players caught a touchdown pass. The special teams units were consistently productive under the direction of Scheier. In 2008, kicker Jason Leo connected on 8-of-13 field goal attempts, while averaging 43.0 yards per punt. Lehigh’s punt unit finished both the 2008 and 2007 seasons ranked third in the nation in net punting. During his career, Leo became one of 10 football players in league history to earn four consecutive all-league honors. Leo’s recognition marked the ninth straight year as a special teams coordinator that Scheier has mentored a kicker or punter to all-league status, a group that includes three All-American nods. In addition, Lehigh’s kickoff return unit led the league and ranked in the top 15 nationally three times in the last four years and Scheier coached punt return units to top 15 finishes three times in his years as a coordinator. Scheier came to Lehigh after spending two years at Princeton as the special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. Prior to his stint at Princeton, Scheier spent three years as an assistant at Columbia, coaching the strong safeties and outside line-backers. He began his coaching career at Dartmouth, assisting with the secondary in 1996 after earning four varsity letters as a free safety for the Big Green and being awarded the special teams player of the year award as a senior. Scheier earned a bachelors degree in psychology at Dartmouth and a masters in education at Columbia. Scheier and his wife Erica have three daughters, Callie, Riley, and Madeline, and one son, Brady.

2010 game ReCapS

Notes vs. Troy• It was a night of first on Saturday evening in Troy Ala. Seven Falcons made their first career starts. On offense Kamar Jorden, Matt Schilz and Calvin Wiley, along with defenders Champ Fells, Jovan Leacock, Calvin Marshall and Dwayne Woods made their first starts of their career.

• Kamar Jorden along with Calvin Wiley, Alex Bayer and Jodan Hopgood made their first career receptions. Jorden, who red-shirted last season after spending two seasons at a junior college, finished the game with a team-high nine receptions for 111 yards. Wiley, on the other hand had to wait a while. Wiley, a sixth-year senior, entered Saturday’s game with zero career catches, but finished the game with a pair of grabs. Hopgood finished the game with two catches for 13 yards and Bayer had one grab for 11 yards.

• Schilz connected with junior Adrian Hodges for his first career touchdown pass. Schilz would finish the game 22-of-43 for 221 yards and that one score.

• Bryan Wright connected on his first two career field goals as a Falcon, banging in a 19 and 23 yarder.

• On the defensive side of the ball, Woods recorded his first career double-digit tackle performance, recording a game-high 14 stops.

University of Troy kicker Michael Taylor hit a 34-yard field goal with four seconds remaining as the Trojans came from behind to defeat Bowling Green 30-27 in the 2010 football season opener for both teams.

Troy won its 24th consecutive home opener despite falling behind 17-7 mid-way through the second quarter. Bowling Green scored first on a 35-yard Willie Geter scamper up the middle and later got a three-yard Adrian Hodges touchdown reception to lead 14-7 after one.

Bryan Wright hit a 19-yard field goal with 10:23 to go in the second that put Bowling Green on top 17-7 but Troy got a field goal three minutes later and tied the score on a one-yard Shawn Southward touchdown with 1:17 to play before the end of the half.

Eugene Cooper had a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter that gave Bowling Green a 24-17 lead. It was the first Bowl-ing Green punt return score since Corey Partridge had a 79-yarder in 2005 against Temple.

Troy tied the score on a 49-yard Jerrel Jernigan run just over a minute later and took its first lead of the game on Taylor’s 40-yard field goal with 8:45 to go in the third.

Bowling Green again tied the score on Wright’s 23-yard kick with 2:11 left in the third but that was the final scoring until Taylor’s field goal with four seconds left.

The Falcons were driving late until redshirt freshman Matt Schilz’ pass in-tended for Calvin Wiley skipped off his hands and into the arms of Troy’s Tony Davis with 1:07 left. The Trojans marched 49 yards in 1:03 to get into position for the game-winner.

Schilz managed the game well in his first career start as BGSU’s quarterback, going 22-for-43 for 221 yards and only the one interception. Kamar Jorden, also playing his first game in a BG uniform, had nine catches for 111 yards. Geter carried the ball 20 times for 93 yards. Tyrone Pronty had four catches for 58 yards and was explosive in the return game, averaging 30.2 yards on five kick returns, including a 48-yarder.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University football team dropped a 33-20 decision to the Golden Hurricane in Tulsa, Okla. The contest was a rematch of the 2008 GMAC Bowl

BGSU (0-2) got out to a fast start after senior Angelo Magnone recovered a fumble at the Tulsa 44-yardline on the opening drive of the game. The Falcons drove 44 yards on 14 plays, capped by a one-yard Matt Schilz touch-down run. Schilz was 7-for-7 on the drive.

Tulsa answered with a 20-0 run before BGSU’s Dwayne Woods intercepted a Tulsa pass and returned it to the Golden Hurricane’s 1-yardline. Senior Cap-tain Willie Geter plunged in for a one-yard score on the next play to get the score to 20-14, but Tulsa answered with a 74 yard drive in less than a minute to regain the two-score lead.

The Falcons looked to have scored as time expired in the first half but Jorden was called for pass interference in the Tulsa end zone to negate the score.

To start the second half Jorden once again looked to have scored on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Schilz, but a holding penalty wiped the seven points off the scoreboard.

Following a Tulsa touchdown and a pair of field goals to extend the lead to 33-14, Schilz added his second rushing score of the game on a naked bootleg from the 2-yardline. Notes vs. Tulsa

• Matt Schilz went 7-for-7, completing passes to four different receivers, on the Falcons opening drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown run, the first of his career. Schilz later added a two-yard score in the fourth quarter.

• Eugene Copper, who had his first career punt return touchdown last week versus Troy, recorded his first career reception (six yards) in the first quarter on a third-and-five. Freshman Tyler Beck recorded his first career catch a drive later, also for six yards.

• With the Falcons trailing 20-7 late in the second quarter Dwayne Woods re-corded his first career interception, and nearly took it to the house, returning it to the Tulsa 1-yard-line. Willie Geter scored on the following play.

• Kamar Jorden had a pair of touchdowns taken away due to penalties. On the final play of the second quarter Jorden was called for offensive pass interference, wiping away a 47-yard score. On the Falcons next offensive play Jorden scored on a 79-yard pass play from Schilz, but was lost due to a holding penalty.

2010 game ReCapS

Host Michigan rolled up 721 yards of total offense en route to a 65-21 win over the Bowling Green football Falcons. The non-conference game was held at Michigan Stadium.

Redshirt freshman Jordan Hopgood scored a pair of touchdowns for the Falcons, twice converting on fourth-and-goal plays from the 1-yard line. Senior Tyrone Pronty had BGSU’s other touchdown, scoring on a 71-yard pass from sophomore Aaron Pankratz.

The Wolverines scored on their first three possessions of the game, taking a 21-0 lead with less than 11 minutes gone.

BGSU responded with back-to-back scores, beginning with Hopgood’s first TD of the day with 8:53 left in the second quarter. After the Falcons stopped U-M on the next drive, with sophomore Dwayne Woods breaking up a fourth-down pass, BG needed just one play to score.

Pankratz hit Pronty on a screen pass, and the Falcon senior took the ball 71 yards for the score. Bryan Wright, who began his collegiate career at Michigan, added his second PAT of the day for BGSU, and the Falcons trailed by just a touchdown.

But, the Wolverines responded with a 69-yard scoring drive, culminating with Michael Shaw’s two-yard run in the final minute of the half. The home team took a 28-14 lead into the intermission.

Michigan scored the first 16 points of the third quarter, before BGSU cut the deficit to 44-21 on Hopgood’s second TD late in the period. But, the visitors could get no closer. Michigan salted the game away with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.

Notes vs. Michigan• The crowd of 109,933 was the largest ever to see a football game involving BGSU.

• Tyrone Pronty had a career-high 92 receiving yards on just three catch-es ... the big play was a 71-yard touchdown pass from Aaron Pankratz ... that play was a career long for both Pankratz and Pronty ... that TD also brought the Falcons within seven points, at 21-14, with just over five minutes left in the first half.

• Pronty’s prior single-game best was 74 yards receiving, at Boise State in the 2008 season.

• Jordan Hopgood had the first two-touchdown game of his young career ... Hopgood now has three touchdowns this season.

• Bryan Wright, who played at Michigan before coming to BGSU this season, punted five times for a 47.4-yard average, and also was a perfect 3-for-3 on point-after tries.

2010 game ReCapS

The visiting Buffalo Bulls outgained the Bowling Green State University football team by over 250 yards, had 18 more first downs and over 38 minutes of possession time, but they could not put away the Falcons until the final whistle in both teams’ Mid-American Conference opener on Saturday (Oct. 2) at Perry Stadium.

In a wild game marred by 14 penalties and 11 turnovers, the Falcons and Bulls battled until Bryan Wright’s 40-yard field goal attempt went just wide as time expired to give the Bulls a 28-26 win.

Buffalo dominated Bowling Green in virtually every statistical category, but the Falcons’ opportu-nistic defense and special teams kept the team in the game.

While the Falcons struggled to get their offense going in the first frame, the defense produced three turnovers.

Buffalo drove to the Bowling Green 3-yard line, but backup quarterback Alex Dennison fumbled on first and goal, and Champ Fells recovered.

After the Falcons went three-and-out, cornerback Robert Lorenzi intercepted Buffalo quarter-back Jerry Davis and returned the ball to the Bulls’ five yard line. Jordan Hopgood took the ball into the end zone one play later for a Falcon touchdown and a 6-0 lead.

Buffalo again drove deep into Bowling Green territory, but Keith Morgan intercepted Davis in the end zone to stop another Bulls scoring opportunity. However, on the next to last play of the first quarter, the Bulls forced a fumble by Falcon quarterback Aaron Pankratz, which they turned into a touchdown early in the second quarter.

Later in the quarter, the Falcons drove 80 yards to reclaim the lead when Pankratz hit Tyrone Pronty on a beautiful 49 yard rainbow over two defenders.

Through the end of the third quarter, the Bulls went on a 21-0 scoring run to take a 28-13 lead. When the Bulls began trading punts with the Falcons on Bowling Green’s side of the field, it appeared the game was over.

That illusion quickly disappeared when Lorenzi took his second interception of the game and returned it 82 yards for a momentum-changing touchdown. Despite missing the two-point conversion, the Falcons climbed to within nine at 28-19.

On their next drive, the Bulls were unable to get anything going and were forced to punt. The Falcon rush partially blocked the kick, which only traveled 11 yards, and the Falcons had the ball at the Buffalo 37.

After a huge sack brought third and 19, Pankratz hit Willie Geter on a short screen. Geter weaved through traffic and found his way into the end zone for a 48 yard touchdown. The score brought the Falcons to within two points.

The Bowling Green defense came through one last time, stripping the ball from running back Ike Nduka. When Keith Morgan made the recovery, the Falcons had their chance to win.

Three runs set up Bryan Wright for a 40-yard field goal attempt after a series of timeouts by both teams, but as time expired, the kick could not find its way between the uprights.

Notes vs. Buffalo

• The BGSU defense caused six turnovers vs. the Bulls, and has had 11 takeaways in the first two home games of the season ... the Falcons have returned three interceptions for touchdowns in those two games, vs. Marshall and UB.

• Robert Lorenzi had the first two interceptions of his career, returning one for a touchdown and the other to the Buffalo 5-yard line.

• Lorenzi took his second INT 82 yards for a touchdown with 10:14 left in the fourth quarter ... it was the third-longest interception return in school history ... BGSU has had two of the five longest INT returns in program history in the season’s first two home games, as Dwayne Woods had a 78-yard return for a score against Marshall.

• Woods had no fewer than 20 tackles, the highest total of his career ... his previous best was 14, against Troy in the 2010 season opener ... through five games this season, Woods has a team-leading 64 tackles.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University football team fell 49-25 on Saturday after-noon to the Ohio Bobcats. The Mid-American Conference game was played inside Peden Stadium in Athens, Ohio.

BGSU drops to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in the MAC, while Ohio improves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in MAC play.

The Falcons opened the game with a bang after Jovan Leacock forced a fumble on the Bobcats first play from scrimmage. Dwayne Woods picked up the loose ball and rumbled 28 yards, down to the OU 3-yardline, but BGSU was stuffed on four straight plays to negate the Falcons’ first scoring chance.

After an OU three-and-out, BGSU once again marched inside the Ohio 10-yardline, but were once again unable to convert, forcing the Falcons into a Bryan Wright 22-yard field goal.

Ohio responded with a pair of touchdown drives in the first quarter and added two more in the second to take a 28-3 lead at the half.

The Falcons seemed to have the offense settled down to start the second half, but Matt Schilz, who returned after a two-week layoff, was pressured into throwing an interception that was returned 55 yards for a Bobcat touchdown to stretch the OU lead to 35-3.

Schilz led the Falcons on a 19-play scoring drive following the pick six, con-verting three different third downs. Senior Willie Geter capped off the drive by plunging into the end zone from one-yard out. The redshirt-freshman quarterback found Tyrone Pronty in the back of the end zone for the two-point conversion to get BGSU to within 35-11.

Following an OU touchdown the Falcons once again drove down the field, this time Schilz hooking up with Kamar Jorden for an 11-yard touchdown. Jorden would add his second score of the afternoon on a 59-yard reception for the Falcons’ final score.

Notes vs. Ohio• The Falcons had their best rushing effort of the season, finishing with 137 yards on 37 carries. Their previous-best was 108 yards at Troy.

• Leading the way on the ground was Willie Geter, who finished with 98 yards on 22 carries. Jordan Hopgood chipped in with 30 yards on 10 carries.

• Kamar Jorden had a game-high eight catches for 129 yards and two touch-downs. Jorden entered the game with 42 grabs, second most in the country.

Bowling Green was unable to complete a two-point conversion attempt with no time remaining and the Falcons lost to Temple 28-27 Saturday afternoon in Mid-American Conference football action. The Falcons had scored when Matt Schilz completed a pass to Calvin Wiley on the final play of regulation.

Bowling Green battled back from a 28-14 deficit to start the fourth quarter. The Falcons had a 17-play, 80-yard touchdown drive to start the fourth quar-ter. Bowling Green took possession back on its own 31-yard line with 1:47 to play in hopes of putting together one more scoring drive.

On 4th-and-16 from the Temple 37, Schilz completed a prayer to Kamar Jorden to the four-yard line with just 10 seconds left. After an incomplete pass, Schilz found Wiley in the back of the end zone to make it 28-27. Head coach Dave Clawson chose to go for two points and the win but Schilz pass was knocked down to end the game.

Jovan Leacock scored Bowling Green’s only first half points on a 49-yard interception return after Darius Smith forced pressure on the Temple quar-terback. It was the fourth defensive touchdown of the year for BGSU, setting a new school record.

The Falcons trailed 14-6 at the half but Willie Geter completed a long drive on BGSU’s first drive of the third quarter with a 12-yard touchdown rush. Bowling Green was successful on the two-point conversion attempt to tie the game but Geter would leave the game with an injury and did not return.

The Bowling Green defense was strong throughout, holding Temple to just 12 first downs, half as many as the Falcons had. BGSU got even stiffer in critical situations, holding the Owls to just 1-of-9 on third down conversion attempts.

Schilz finished 30-of-51 passing for 287 yards and one touchdown pass. Jorden had 12 catches for 143 yards receiving and Alex Bayer ended with five catches for 77 yards. Dwayne Woods ended with a team-high eight tackles.

Notes Versus Temple• Jovan Leacock picked off a pass in the first quarter and ran it back for a 49-yard touchdown. It was the fourth defensive touchdown for the Falcons in 2010, the most defensive scores in a season for the Orange and Brown. The previous-high were three defensive scores by the 1985 Falcons.

• Alex Bayer had a career-high five receptions for 77 yards.

• Kamar Jorden, the nation’s leading receiver had a game-high 12 catches for 143 yards, including a huge 33-yard leaping catch late in the fourth quarter to help set up the Falcons final touchdown.

• The Falcon defense had its best performance of the year, allowing just 302 yards of total offense. Nearly 40 percent of Temple’s total yards came on two plays, an 80 and 46 yard touchdown pass.

• Speaking of the defense, Temple was just 1 of 9 on third downs for the entire game.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University football team failed to break 100 yards of total offense until the fourth quarter and held the ball offensively for only 25 minutes as the Kent State Golden Flashes won only their second game in their last 18 visits to Bowling Green, 30-6.

The Falcons had an early opportunity when the Flashes fumbled on the first drive of the game. However, BG lost the ball on downs. After the Falcons forced a punt, freshman Matt Schilz was intercepted by Brian Lain-hart, who returned the pick to the Falcons’ 15.

BG’s defense held firm and forced KSU to settle for a field goal. On the ensuing kickoff, Jerry “Boo Boo” Gates ran strong up the middle but ap-peared to be tackled at the 44 yard line. Gates never touched the ground, though, and when whistles didn’t blow, Gates took the ball and raced to the end zone for a Falcons’ touchdown.

The extra point was blocked, but the Falcons led 6-3.

The team would never approach the end zone again.

The Flashes scored late in the first quarter to lead 10-6, then scored 17 points in the second quarter to put the game away. Thanks to the Falcons’ inability to generate any offense, the Flashes consistently operated on short fields; in fact, none of their scoring drives lasted more than 50 yards.

At halftime, the Falcons had 44 yards on 32 plays, with the longest play a Jordan Hopgood rush of 17 yards.

Things would get no better from there, as the Falcons did not cross the 100-yard barrier until the fourth quarter, when the game was already 30-6.

In all, Bowling Green produced just 135 yards and barely over 2.0 yards per play. The team generated more yards from their kickoff returns (157). The Falcons were 3-of-16 on third down, managed 11 first downs, and pos-sessed the ball for just 25:01.

Notes vs. KSU• Boo Boo Gates had a 75-yard kick return for a touchdown to give the Falcons a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The last Falcon to return a kick for a score was Keith Morgan on Nov. 20, 2009 versus Akron.

• Wide receiver Calvin Wiley completed his first career pass to freshman Alex Bayer for 16 yards.

• Aunre’ Davis made his first career start.

• Shaun Joplin recorded his first career catch in the fourth quarter.

2010 game ReCapS

Bowling Green’s Jordan Hopgood scored a touchdown with 21 seconds remaining to give the Falcons a 17-14 win in Mount Pleasant, Mich., over the Central Michigan Chippewas on Saturday evening. The Mid-American Conference contest was held inside Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

It was the Falcons first win when scoring less than 20 points since a 17-0 win at Ohio back in 2001.

With the Falcons trailing 14-10 with 5:05 remaining at the CMU 47-yardline Dave Clawson elected to punt the ball back to the Chippewas, putting the pressure on the Falcon defense. After a pair of first downs, sophomore Dwayne Woods forced a fumble at the BGSU 39-yardline to set up Matt Schilz and the BGSU offense.

Schilz took over with 2:26 remaining and led the Orange and Brown down to the Chippewas 35 before finding Kamar Jorden down the middle for a 32-yard reception to set up first-and-goal with just over a minute to go. Hopgood would score two plays later from 1-yard out to snap the Falcons’ five-game losing streak.

The story of the night was the Falcon defense and its running game.

Bowling Green allowed just 14 points (six coming on a pick-6) and 231 total yards. CMU was held to just 132 yards through the air, an offense that came into the game averaging 282 yards passing per game. The Falcon defense forced three turnovers, held Central Michigan to 4-of-12 on third down and had 12 tackles for loss (six sacks).

While the Falcons had just 107 yards on the ground, BGSU’s run game was more explosive than it has been in some time. Willie Geter ran the ball 26 times for 103 yards, while Calvin Wiley added 10 yards on two carries and Hopgood had just two yards, but did add the winning score.

Notes vs. Central Michigan• As mentioned before, the 17-14 win versus Central Michigan is the Falcons’ first win when scoring less than 20 points since a 17-0 win at Ohio back in 2001.

• BGSU had six sacks on the night. Chris Jones had 3.5 and was joined by Calvin Marshall, Champ Fells, Angelo Magnone, Darius Smith and Tim Moore, all who combined for 2.5 sacks. The Falcons had seven sacks on the season prior to the CMU contest.

• The Falcons had 16 players record tackles in the game and nine of them had at least one tackle for loss.

• As mentioned, Calvin Wiley had his first career rushing touchdown. Two weeks ago at Temple Wiley added his first career touchdown recep-tion.

• The Falcons are 2-0 on the season when they have a 100-yard rusher. Geter had 100 yards in the win versus Marshall and added 103 yards this week at Central Michigan.

• Calvin Marshall had a career-high nine tackles and Aaron Foster added a career-best eight stops.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University Falcons fell 24-21 to the Miami Red-hawks on the final play of a game dominated by weather more than anything else. The game began with clear skies, but as the evening progressed, fog devel-oped over the field. The weather got progressively worse until it became a thick soup during the fourth quarter, making the field almost impossible to see except on ground level. Wednesday’s game was the first nationally televised game between the two teams since the famous 2006 “Mud Bowl” at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. Miami (6-4, 5-1 MAC) used a strong rushing attack to build a 21-7 lead over the Falcons (2-8, 1-5 MAC) by the end of the third quarter. Bowling Green capitalized on a turnover and a long Schilz-to-Jorden pass to tie the game in the fourth quarter. However, a Schilz interception with just over two minutes to play put the ball on the Falcon side of the field for Miami, and the Redhawks drove for a game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired. The final-play loss was the fourth such defeat suffered by Bowling Green this season.

Game Notes vs. Miami• Freshman Boo Boo Gates made his first career start.

• The Falcon defense entered the game second in the MAC with 26 take-aways ... BGSU forced three Miami turnovers, all fumbles, on Wednesday night.

• Sophomore MLB Dwayne Woods entered the week with 98 tackles, the top total in the MAC and the sixth-highest total in the nation ... Woods had four tackles on the RedHawks’ opening drive, and ended the night with a game-high total of 13 stops.

• Woods went over the 100-tackle mark for the season on that opening Miami drive, and ended the game with a total of 111 tackles in 2010.

• Redshirt junior Kevin Alvarado and fifth-year senior Darius Smith teamed up for a sack of MU quarterback Zac Dysert on the RedHawks’ third drive of the game.

Game #10Miami 24, Bowling Green 21

Doyt L. Perry Stadium • Bowling Green, Ohio

• On that second-quarter drive, Geter moved past Courtney Davis (1993-96) into 10th place on the BGSU career rushing list ... Geter ended the game with 2,038 yards in his Falcon career ... he is only six yards behind ninth-place Zeb Jackson (2,044 yards from 1990-93).

• On that same drive, sixth-year senior Calvin Wiley lined up at quarterback and ran for 25 yards to the MU 12, the Falcons’ fourth first down of the drive.

• Geter had two rushing touchdowns in the game, giving him a team-leading seven TDs this season and 19 in his career.

• Miami scored in the last two minutes of the opening half on a 1-yard run by Dysert ... in the second half, As the fog rolled in, the RedHawks moved down the field and took a 21-7 lead on a 22-yard Dysert pass to Nick Har-well.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University football team gave up 19 points in the first eight minutes of the first quarter and the Falcons were unable to fight back in a 33-14 loss to rival Toledo Wednesday.

Calvin Wiley’s 13 yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter cut Toledo’s lead to 12 points at 19-7 but the Rockets scored just 19 sec-onds later to extend the lead again.

The game went to the half with a 26-7 score but the Falcons got a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown from Eugene Cooper less than five minutes into the second half to make it 26-14. Toledo was forced to punt on its next possession but a Matt Schilz pass was intercepted to end the threat.

The Rockets added one more touchdown late in the third and there was no scoring in the fourth.

Notes vs. Toledo• Eugene Cooper’s punt return for a touchdown was his second of the season. He is the first BGSU player in program history to return two punts for touchdowns in the same season.

• Cooper’s 71-yard punt return was the longest ever by an opponent against Toledo and it was the eighth longest punt return in BGSU history. It also tied for the fifth longest play of any type this year for Bowling Green.

2010 game ReCapS

The Bowling Green State University football team concluded their 2010 sea-son on Friday (Nov. 26) at Doyt Perry Stadium by falling to the Western Michigan Broncos, 41-7. The Falcons, who had not faced Western Michigan since 2005, managed only six yards on ten plays in the first quarter and could not recover. Bowling Green earned their initial first down of the game with 9:55 left in the first half. By that time, the Broncos had built a 27-0 lead thanks to 215 yards of offense and a muffed kickoff by the Falcons. Despite managing over 100 yards for the remainder of the half, the Falcons could not register points on the scoreboard. However, Bowling Green broke into the points column on their first drive of the second half, capping a four-play, 72-yard drive with a 19-yard pass from Matt Schilz to Kamar Jorden. On the following drive, the Broncos scored on a 35-yard run to finish a 65-yard drive in just 1:32 of game time to kill BGSU’s momentum and seal the win. A touchdown later in the third quarter gave WMU their final margin of victory. For the game, the Falcons gained 396 yards on 67 plays, while giving up 442 on the same number of plays. BGSU held advantages in first downs and time of possession. However, the Falcons were just 2-of-13 on third down, 1-of-5 on fourth down, and 1-of-3 in red zone chances. Schilz finished the game 19/31 for 282 yards plus one touchdown and one interception. Willie Geter led one of the best Falcon rushing attacks of the season, carrying the ball 15 times for 92 yards as the Falcons racked up 114 yards on the ground during the game. Kamar Jorden contributed eight catches for 114 yards and a touchdown, while Alex Bayer provided 88 receiving yards for the Falcons.

Notes vs. Western Michigan• Sophomore Dwayne Woods finished the game with nine tackles. Those nine give him 134 on the season, which places him in a six-way tie for 13th on BGSU’s all-time single-season tackles list. It also vaults him into third place in the nation for tackiles during the 2010 season. • Junior Kamar Jorden completed one of BGSU’s all-time great seasons by a receiver with 8 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown. Those numbers give Jorden 97 catches for 1109 yards during the 2010 season. Jorden now ranks third on BGSU’s all-time list for single-season receptions and receiving yards, behind Freddie Barnes (2009) and Cole Magner (2003). • Senior Willie Geter capped off his Falcon career with a 15-carry, 92-yard performance against the Broncos. Geter finishes his four years at BGSU with 2,161 yards. He ranks eighth in BGSU history for career rushing yards.
