BOWLING NEWSPage 2 may 26, 2016

Steve: Because of today’s era of political correctness.....Carol: Whoa, whoa, whoa there Stevie! Hold your horses! We don’t do politics here! This paper is about bowling!Steve: So is this article, Carol. Bear with me. I was just trying to make a point. Carol: Okay, but watch it, Bucko!Steve: I was just going to say there is a difference between how men and women think. That’s what, “The Tale of Two Brains” was about (see CBN 07/30/2015 issue). That includes how they think about bowling. While that article was meant to be humorous, there was some truth to it. I think it might be worthwhile to take a look at that phenomenon. Carol: Go on.Steve: Okay. Here’s how I see it. Women are every bit as competitive as men, maybe more so, but they don’t show it. It’s kind of like men being emotional but never letting anyone see them cry. Carol: You lost me, there.Steve: Let me explain. As you know, I have been trying to get as many copies of my book into the hands of as many untrained bowlers as possible.Carol: Un-huh, I know that. You’re practically giving them away.Steve: True. But I’ve noticed something that, to me, is fascinating and inexplicable. Carol: What’s that?Steve: Since we’ve started the Bowling News “Special Offer,” all the book orders have come from men.Carol: Why does that surprise you?Steve: Because it seems that women aren’t getting the message.Carol: What message? That they should buy your book?Steve: No. That they can seriously improve their scoring by learning a few simple facts about this game. It’s almost like they don’t care, but I know they do!Carol: Don’t be too sure about that. I went down and asked a whole league of women a simple question about bowling, and over half of them couldn’t answer it.Steve: What was the question?Carol: What target do you roll your ball over! Most of ‘em just shrugged and said, “I don’t know.”Steve: Uh-oh, that’s pretty bad.Carol: I know! But what are you gonna do?Steve: I’ve been wondering the same thing for a very long time, and I finally came up with an idea.Carol: Let’s hear it. I’m willing to try anything. I’m tired of women thinking men are better bowlers than we are.Steve: That makes two of us.Carol: So what’s your big idea?Steve: Well, at the risk of sounding like a male chauvinist, I think we need an approach to which women can relate.Carol: There’s no sin in that. What do you suggest?Steve: My wife loves to read. She also loves to shop and can’t resist a bargain. And fashion? Don’t even get me started on fashion!Carol: Do I need to remind you this paper is dedicated to bowling.......NOT FASHION!!!Steve: But this article is dedicated to ladies who bowl. They need to understand that by shopping for a great bargain, they can read some simple tips that allow them to fashion an enviable game.Carol: Envy......you’re playing all the right keys, kiddo. Keep going.Steve: Alright. Think of open frames as if they are broken finger nails. Like fingers on your hands, there are ten frames in each game and the broken ones make your scores look terrible. You hate them and need to learn how to eliminate them. The Essentials of Bowling* will help you do that. Carol: Hey. That was pretty good. I like that analogy.Steve: Thanks. Now, think of spares like a pair of comfortable high heels. They elevate your scores to a more appealing level. The Essentials* will teach you how to create more of them.Carol: Ooh. I like that one, too. Steve: Then you’ll love this one. Think of a strike as “the little black dress” of your game. The more you deliver, the more fabulous your scores become.Carol: That’s the, bottom line! Isn’t It?Steve: Touche!Dean: All right, folks! Wrap it up! I want to put this edition to bed!Carol: Let me do this my way, Steve. Steve: Do what?Carol: Just shut up and listen! To all my friends who shrugged and said, “I don’t know,” think of all the other things re-lated to bowling that you don’t know. There’s a cure for that and it’s a good little read. I’ve got the bargain-of-the-century for you. While his supplies last, Steve is pricing one copy of his book at five bucks! That’s 64% off the retail price and barely covers shipping and handling! If you want extras to give away as gifts, additional copies are only a dollar more! That’s over 90% off, and they will ALL be signed! Take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime deal by using the following coupon. At these prices, you won’t regret it! After all, Steve wrote this book specifically for you.

on a regular basis to support entrants; Manages Junior Gold qualifiers to advance players to National Champion-ships and when she took over as coordinator for California State Team USA Finals in 2004 and conducted a success-ful event, it led the event for qualifiers throughout the na-tion for several years.

In 1999, to help promote the National Bowling stadium, Debbie started a Junior-Adult tournament because she felt it would give youth bowlers an opportunity to bowl at the stadium. Starting with an inaugural year of 191 teams and 395 doubles it grew to 318 teams and 677 doubles in 2007, its eighth year and it continues to thrive. Debbie has had approximately 50 coaches certified through her program and national programs.

Mom, Debbie, was always there for events and encour-aging PJ. One thing etched in her mind was videotaping his bowling at an event when he picked up the 7-10 split. She had the camera going and got the ten pin when someone stepped in front of the camera and when she swept over to the seven pin and realized PJ had picked it up! Argh!

No slouch herself, Debbie is a high average bowler and has been on the 100 Top Coaches in the U.S. list for sev-eral years; a recipient of the David Dahm’s Award from USBC in 2009 as Coach of the Year and the Pete Lusich Award from NorCal YABA for Unselfish Dedication and Contribution to Youth Bowling in Northern California. She has organized outstanding youth programs and pro-moted bowling in the community schools; she has always had programs where kids could raise funds to help them attend tournaments including Junior Gold. She has pro-duced several outstanding bowlers and is mentor to many.

So, with all of his achievements where is Pj now? He’s 30, married to Janay and the father of twins. He is a Finan-cial Advisor Consultant for a top financial firm. His goal is still to win a Pro title. He would love to bowl on tour but feels there is not enough money in it when you have to support a family.

“Bowling has changed in many ways,” says Debbie. Tournaments are smaller but there is more opportunity so exposure is better. PJ will continue to bowl in semi-pro and pro events when he can in search of that “title” and mom will concentrate on private coaching. The mom/son bond is solid and PJ has also decided that maybe mom does know something.

LOS ANGELES – It’s been said over and over in this newspaper.

Bowlers are a breed apart when it comes to being pas-sionate about their game. No sport has athletes who are as equally passionate as bowlers.

Of course, there are golfers and tennis players and oth-er athletes who may dispute that opinion and they can be pretty vehement. But this is a bowling column, so I plead perhaps a touch of bias when affirming that bowlers often sport more than a full tank of emotion when it comes to their activity.

Theo Sojourn’s often-chronicled story is a perfect ex-ample. He broke two bones in his right forearm in a snow-boarding accident, but that didn’t stop this right-handed bowler from abandoning the game that he had just taken up.

Sojourn simply shifted to rolling the ball left-handed, which resulted in several woe-ful double-digit scores at Brunswick Matador Bowl in Northridge. Then Sojourn put his game in high gear and he crushed an electrifying and career-best 240 only six weeks after converting to his “off” hand.

Sojourn’s tale is just one example of hundreds that illustrate bowlers’ passion.Unfortunately, that passion can be misplaced. Los Angeles league bowlers, by anec-

dotal accounts, have shown this emotion recently with some not-so-nice confrontations and heated words. And yes, there have been fights between members of opposing teams.

Hey, this is bowling, remember? This is a gentleman’s game. And a gentlewoman’s game. This is an activity where we’re supposed to have fun.But the fact is this: League bowlers are competitive, and some are very competitive

and some are very, very competitive. And there’s some money to be made by having a winning team and defeating opponents on a weekly basis.

And oftentimes bowlers allege that other teams are slipping in “ringers” and throwing off the handicap balance during key matches.

Are ringers really used from time to time? No doubt.Should it be an issue? Well, some bowlers believe it should. And that’s too bad.As ace bowler Karl Kurtz notes: League payoffs “won’t put you in a different tax

bracket.”Other cities have more stringent rules than L.A. bowling centers when it comes to us-

ing substitutes who may be ringers. It’s actually quite easy to vote in some “ringer rules” during league meetings before

the season begins. And if that makes people happier, sure, go ahead and tighten the rules. In the meantime, have some fun. And congratulate your opponents when they make

great shots. There’s something special about being gracious and showing class. It makes people

winners whether they have the high score or not.

Karl Kurtz says bowling league payoffs won’t put players “in a different tax bracket.”

A Plea for Some Civilityby Fred Eisenhammer

nior Masters in 2013.“This year’s Senior U.S. Open comes at a good time because, like I’ve said many

times before, I like the long format tournaments, especially the U.S. Open,” Weber said. “It’s a true test of bowling and you’re usually bowling on a challenging lane condition. It’s not easy by any means; you have to make your spares and really take advantage of the pairs of lanes where you can capitalize on making strikes.”

Also still active and competitive on the PBA Tour in a career that has spanned more than three decades, Weber has compiled 37 PBA Tour titles, which ranks fourth all-time, including a record-tying (with Earl Anthony) 10 majors.

After battling hip and back ailments late last year, Weber said he’s feeling good physi-cally and is looking forward to the most demanding test of the season. Like the U.S. Open on the PBA Tour, the Senior U.S. Open demands patience, quality shot-making and a strong mental game over 48 games of qualifying and match play. The top four players will meet in the stepladder finals on June 3 at 4:15 p.m. PT to determine the winner. All rounds of the Senior U.S. Open will be covered live, exclusively on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel (for subscription information, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link).

“Right now I feel like I have all the confidence in the world,” Weber said. “With the break in the schedule we’re in now, I’ll have plenty of time to prepare and will probably get more confident as the tournament gets closer. There’s no real secret to it. When com-petition starts it’s all about focus and making good shots.”

In addition to the demanding format, Weber will be competing against approximately 200 of the world’s top players ages 50 and older, including eight Hall of Famers (We-ber, Baker, Duke, Dale Eagle, Parker Bohn III, Amleto Monacelli, Johnny Petraglia and Walter Ray Williams Jr.) and four other Senior U.S. Open past champions (Duke, 2014; Monacelli 2012, 2013; Baker 2005, 2006; and Ron Mohr, 2011).

The Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open is the first of four majors on the 2016 PBA50 Tour schedule. The remaining majors are the USBC Senior Masters, PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship and PBA50 National Championship.

against Gilbert Gissend-aner, as before, Matt came thru the challenge to be one of the finalists.

A few of the top 16 fi-nalists struggled with the tough shot and the others breezed thru their matches. Placing 10-16th Sun Sun-dara, Dennis Kelsey, Leo Silva, Arnold J. Trias, Ar-mand Garcia, Traci Gioia and Matthew Goodloe $100 each. In 6-9th place Pablo Castro, Eban Jack-son, Carrie Zhu and Beth Borci $105 each. Finishing in 4th and 5th were Danny Eguilos and Carlos Umana receiving $110 each.

After a tough first match against Matthew, Jeff Taino won the three matches with ease to meet George Parker who was steady all thru his matches. Jeff made it tough for George as needed to

double in the 10th and luck was on George’s side as he carried the strike he needed he finished with 166 game to Jeff’s 159 game scratch. George was the “horse” and paid $135, earned to right to bowl Samson Kong. The championship started with both bowlers marking, Samson missed a spare in the 3rd frame and followed with a split in the 4th. George caught a split in the 3rd frame but he recovered to go ahead by a few pins with a double. Samson an-swered by marking until the 9th when he caught another split, marked in the 10th ending with a 199 game. George opened in the 7th making it a very close game but he marked all the way to the 10th frame to finish with a 221 game.

George Parker is from

Lakewood, used his Storm/Prodigy drilled by Al at Keystone Lanes and thanks his long time love Nina. Samson Kong is from Temple City, using a Storm drilled by Ed at Bowling Square.

Jeff Taino is from Chi-no Hills, used his favorite Storm/Tropical Heat drilled by Chris at Deer Creek Lanes.

The 3/6/9 worth $400 will be carried over to Cal Bowl since Tim Tran failed to break it.

The Match Series and Mystery Doubles will be carried over to Cal Bowl and estimated to be over $3,000. Congratulations to

Traci Gioia for having the only score of 158 to win 50% of the Match Game pot worth $1,070 and she also made the finals. The carry over for the Match Game is $1,070.

WINNETKA – It’s not every day that a bowler knocks down the rarely seen 1-10 spare.

It’s truly a rare sight if that bowler is 90 years old.

And it’s even rarer if a bowler hits that shot on the day of the 90th birthday.

But that’s what happened in a senior league last week at Winnetka Bowl. Right-handed Shirley Radamaker, the birthday girl, snaked her spare shot so it clipped the left side of the 1 pin, which went on to topple the 10.

“It was exciting,” Shir-ley said.

Candy Adams was watching intently as Shir-ley’s spare shot developed and saw that it had a chance from the moment Shirley released the ball. “It wasn’t surprising,” Candy said. “She throws a very slow ball and if you hit [the 1] right, it’ll fly over there.”

The third-game heroics gave Shirley something to crow about in an otherwise difficult series. Shirley had plenty to celebrate on this day – not just her birthday cupcakes.

She was thankful that she’s a longtime bowler (nearly 60 years) who’s made many friendships through her leagues. Shirley competes in two leagues a week and has bowled through the years at AMF Woodlake Lanes in Woodland Hills, Corbin Bowl in Tarzana and now-defunct Rocket Bowl in Northridge. She was one of the original bowlers when Winnetka Bowl opened its doors in 1958.

“When the bowling alley opened, they sent fliers out,” Shirley said. “They were giv-ing out a free ball. My neighbors and I came out and we formed a little league.”

Shirley now bowls leagues on Mondays and Thursdays at Winnetka Bowl. She’s averaging 140. About 15 years ago, she averaged close to 160.“She’s a good bowler for her age,” praised top senior bowler Bob Adams.Asked her goals, Shirley said: “I want to continue to bowl as long as I can. I enjoy

the sport.“Winnetka is like my second home. It’s so good to me. I love everyone here.”

denver broncos’ CJ Anderson Makes PbA debut in Oklahoma City, Jonesboro Event Is Next

Super bowl-winning running back is taking his bowling experiences seriouslyCHICAGO – CJ Anderson, who helped the underdog Denver Broncos upset the heav-

ily favored Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50, made his debut in Professional Bowlers Association competition over the weekend in the PBA Planet Bowl Southwest Open in Oklahoma City, and is already making plans for his second appearance in the Downums Waste Services PBA Jonesboro Open presented by Xtra Frame at Jonesboro Bowling Center in Jonesboro, Ark., June 3-5.

The fact that he tied for 64th place out of 71 entries doesn’t bother him a bit. The fact that he averaged a modest 173.8 for his first eight games in a PBA Regional tournament for players in the southwest area of the U.S. is nothing more than a learning experience. Being an underdog is nothing new for the 25-year-old Anderson, who signed with the Broncos as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California in 2013, and three years later was wearing a Super Bowl ring.

Bowling at the highest level is just another challenge Anderson decided he wanted undertake as a personal yardstick. Competing against bowlers who have grown up with a sport that Anderson just took up three years ago isn’t exactly the same as running into a wall of 300-pound linemen, but it’s less painful and a whole lot more fun.

“It was fun,” Anderson said of his PBA debut. “I learned a lot. That was my first time bowling in a PBA event. It was the first time I’ve bowled on the Cheetah lane condition. Bowling on a short (35-foot) pattern like that was not my best, but my last four games were higher than my first four, so I was happy with that.

“It’s a matter of my needing to know what to do as the pattern breaks down, so that’s what I was working on,” he said. “I’ve only been bowling for three years, so to put myself in position to bowl in an event like this…I’m pretty happy.”

Anderson bowls a lot, and he’s under the watchful eye of PBA member and veteran regional competitor Brett Cooper (“I call him my boss,” Anderson said), as well as Storm Products’ Hank Boomershine, the company’s Vice President of North American Sales, Research and Development in addition to being a USBC Gold Level Coach.

Anderson, PBA fans may recall, was a celebrity participant in the 2016 Chris Paul PBA Celebrity Invitational, where his unorthodox “wrong-foot” delivery was first noted. Unlike traditional right-handed bowlers who finish their approach by sliding on their left foot, Anderson slides on his right foot. Cooper and Boomershine are trying to help An-derson maximize his style rather than try to change it.

“It’s comfortable for me,” Anderson said. “That’s the way I’ve bowled since I started. It’s a matter of execution – staying down, hitting your target, all that stuff. I’m using the same tools Pete Weber, Norm Duke, all those guys use, so if I executive the shot, I get the same result.

“I’ve been around some of those bowlers. I’m always around Brett and Hank Boomer-shine. My goal is to stay consistent,” he said. “I want those guys to like the way the ball comes off my hand.”

In Oklahoma City, Anderson was out-scored by 55 pins a game by his mentor, Coo-per, the eventual tournament winner. He also was 30 pins a game behind former major league baseball star John Burkett, who averaged 207 in finishing 22nd. Burkett got his feet wet in PBA competition while he was still an active major league pitched, and is now an established competitor on the PBA50 Tour. Anderson is eager at the front edge of his learning curve, and he’s eager to try it again.

Anderson will take his game to another plateau in early June in Jonesboro, where a stronger field of PBA Tour champions is expected to compete for a PBA Tour title along with a $15,000 first prize. He also hopes his experience practicing with Cooper on a wide range of PBA animal patterns, including the longer oiling patterns that power players tend to favor, will suit his game better.

“I understand the Jonesboro tournament will be a long pattern,” Anderson said. “That means I’ll get to throw my heavy stuff, like I like to throw, so I think the outcome will be a little better for me.

“I’m just happy to be part of it,” he concluded. “My goal is to get better and win, and I’ve got the right people in my corner.”

The Downums Waste Services PBA Jonesboro Open presented by Xtra Frame will be covered live, from start to finish, by PBA’s Xtra Frame online video-streaming service. For subscription information, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame link.

CHICAGO – The eighth annual edition of the Professional Bowlers Association’s World Series of Bowling, an international multi-event showcase for the world’s most talented bowlers, will re-turn to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev., Nov. 27-Dec. 11.

WSOB VIII will offer PBA members from around the world an opportunity to compete for shares of an estimated $750,000 in prize money and five PBA Tour titles in nationally-televised ESPN finals.

The PBA World Series, which has evolved into the world’s most prestigious test of bowling skills, will again be presented by the Silver Legacy Resort, providing all players, fans, bowling in-dustry partners and news media attendees with top quality accommodations and services at special discounted rates.

WSOB VIII will return to a PBA members-only event, with an all-inclusive entry fee of $1,000 covering all five PBA Tour events: the PBA Cheetah, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Champion-ships plus the PBA World Championship, the final major championship of the 2016 season. Along with scheduled updates to the bowling lane environment at the National Bowling Stadium, the Shark Championship returns to the World Series lineup for the first time since 2011, replacing the Viper Championship.

In keeping with WSOB tradition, combined qualifying scores from the four animal pattern events, each providing its own unique challenge, will serve as the qualifying stages to determine players advancing to the PBA World Championship match play finals.

In addition to the five PBA Tour events, the World Series will host the fourth annual PBA Chal-lenge Series, inviting the top players in three other levels of PBA competition to participate in the WSOB program and to compete in special PBA Regional, PWBA-PBA Women’s Regional and PBA50 Tour Challenge events. The PBA Regional and PWBA/PBA Women’s Regional points leaders in the East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest, West, Northwest and Japan Regions as of the Oct. 16 qualifying deadline will receive WSOB and PBA Challenge Series invitations. PBA50 qualifiers will be determined at the conclusion of the PBA50 Tour season on Aug. 17.

The 2016 World Series will get underway a week earlier than it did in 2015, beginning with the PBA Challenge events and a pro-am program on Sunday, Nov. 27, followed by practice sessions and the PBA Challenge finals on Nov. 28 before competition officially gets underway on Tuesday, Nov. 29, with the first of four single-day animal pattern qualifying sessions.

After a day off on Saturday, Dec. 3, PBA World Championship cashers and match play rounds will take place Dec. 4 and 5, followed by best-of-five-game single-elimination match play rounds for the Cheetah, Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championship qualifiers Tuesday, Dec. 6, through Thursday, Dec. 8. The four surviving players in each of the animal pattern events will bowl in tape-delayed ESPN finals on Saturday, Dec. 10. the second qualifying block and finished the third and final block in fifth place at a plus 131 (208 average). The field was then cut to the top thirty-two players for match play.

After losing her first match to Michelle Silver 698-631 Paula rattled off five consecutive match wins on scores of 672-579, 684-599, 591-520, 632-618 and 565-538. The five consecutive wins earned Paula a place in the semi-final roll-off. The four semifinalists rolled a three game series with the low bowler being eliminated and the top three being seeded in the step ladder finals as the third, fourth and fifth seeds. Paula’s 623 won her the fifth seed in the step ladder finals. She just beat Jeanette Baker’s 622. The first two seeds in the finals (Robin Romeo and Tish Johnson) came from the winners bracket.

I watched the step ladder finals on Bowl.com and was impressed with each of the ladies and how they handled the difficult Queen’s oil pattern. Paula’s successful run ended in the step ladder finals when she lost to Karen Bar-cal and finished fifth.

In addition to our own Paula Vidad the Senior Queens field of players included an impressive list of super stars including PAM BUCKNER, CHAR HAMMEL, TISH JOHNSON, CHERYL ROBINSON, ROBIN ROMEO, LUCY SANDELIN and MICHELLE SILVER.

Congratulations to Paula, champion Robin Romeo and all the ladies who competed in this years a Senior Queens.
