INTERIOR DESIGN + ARCHITECTURE

Kapalua Resort, Maui

Welcoming, warm and generous are just a few of its characteristics. Hospitality is an impressive way to name the hotels and resorts sector, which we view as a one word mission statement. The human experience is another aspect of this type in the built space. A guest’s home away from home, first, has the potential to be about generosity, recognition, respect and comfort, then, culture, entertainment, culinary experiences, enlightenment, business and education. We entice good design by paying homage to the people, land, art, architecture and customs of the place where you are vacationing or conducting business. If you are an adventurer, you can book an over the ocean bungalow or even a yurt where elephants come to your deck in the morning. Business people around the world are more focused on amenities to assist in their ability to conduct business. Effective resorts provide multiple areas to meet in, business centers, an in-room home office set up, access to wireless network to contact their remote work team or family, comfortable places to rest, quick places to dine and work out. Even then, the natural environment is the backdrop, the root.

The architecture and interior spaces reveal the next layer of the guest experience, along with the value, pride of service, and the custom amenities that the resort team offers. In terms of architecture and interior spaces, constant innovation in the design field is a mainstay. Innovation shows in the process, quality and follow through of an inspired design. We believe hospitality should be integrated into the design of our experiences: our homes, our work places, our recreational spaces, where we are educated, where we dine, where we shop, where we heal, where we are entertained and yes where we travel.

Wishing you valuable experiences in your life,

Kapalua Resort & Kapalua Adventure CenterMaui, Hawaii

A dynamic display of natural materials of MauiFollow Nature

Kapalua Resort is on 22,000 acres of land rich with natural beauty, dramatic mountains and valleys, which open onto pristine beaches and bays. The resort was started in 1920 when the first 20 acres of pineapple fields were planted. Within a few decades the family realized the resort as part of its farm, grew Cook pines for the masts of tall ships, and also set aside the Pu’u Kukui water shed preserve.

In the early 2000’s Kapalua Resort began a master planing concept. Their pineapple land had become known worldwide by high-end resort guests. The new direction was to renovate and update current assets and develop new ventures. The Bay Golf & Ridge Villas were updated to four star guest accommodations. The Kapalua Bay Hotel was removed and replaced with high-end Residences.

The five star Ritz Carlton Kapalua was also renovated. The addition of the organic farm that services the restaurants was a big success. Ziplines were built in the preserve for entertainment and education about protecting natural resources. The three main golf clubhouses, restaurants and retail were conceptually redesigned and donned with new interior furniture and finishes.

The Kapalua Adventure Center at the Village Clubhouse is a new space that is a platform for the philosophies of Kapalua. The center welcomes and educates guests about the history, culture and sustainability imbedded in the design. Items such as 100% reclaimed wood floors, new efficient flexible exterior glazing for natural ventilation, energy saving lighting, indigenous Eco Koa natural wood slabs, and the fabrics of the beach cabana dressing rooms are ‘green’ products. The space ties to all aspects of the resort activities with recreation and a zipline tour education of the Pu’u Kukui preserve. It also promotes the organic Kapalua farm to table concept in its restaurant and the Kapalua brand in its retail product selection. Architectural features are the whimsical custom wooden palm trees, and a Tongan hand carved canoe with handmade coconut rope. A guest is inspired while enjoying mountain preserve and ocean views with the island of Molokai’ looming in the distance.

Experience a getaway, every day. Enjoy tropical gardens, trickling fountains, spacious living and modern amenities. True hospitality with a dedication to professional customer service. The existing Tampa, Florida, complex was repositioned to meet the demographic demands for high quality living environments with luxury touches, plus the latest technology. Taking cues of the existing architectural form, the building was painted crisp white, setting the background for burst of color, to create a Miami cool look.

Outdoor entertaining has always been a way of life in Maui, a transformation is underway that is changing how we work, live & play: our designs are incorporating indoor-outdoor zones, making the outside an extension of the planning solutions.

When day turns to night and balmy trade winds calls friends over for elegant entertaining, there are few places more appealing than a living room that seamlessly connects indoors and out.

Organically Modern

An organically modern building is harvested by infusing sleek minimalist architecture with natural imagery. Bloom is stylish and sustainable living designed especially for members of the Indiana University community, in a beautiful setting just minutes from campus.

The Cows Calling You HomeA Better Built Burger

Burgers are sizzling hot in the fast-casual restaurant sector. When Jerry Built Homegrown Burgers approached BOX Studios with the notion for a better burger joint, the concept was simple: I need to know there’s MEAT in that building! The not-so-subtle retort? BOX Studios boldly sliced a glowing 30-foot bull through the structure, brazenly announcing what’s for dinner.

Houston’s design community laughs off the Cow Town stereotype, but what better source for the message? Not only do customers see everything, they are invited into the show. Transparency is important to the owners. The kitchen is fully in view from the seating area, for patrons to follow the preparation process.

Large and small artistic gestures adorn the seating areas. The chef’s tools of the trade―a comprehensive spatula collection―are reverently displayed in a backlit niche. Each restaurant will include a mural-sized collage of community images commissioned for that locale. A deeper message is carried in the interior and exterior finishes. Much of the wood accents are made from “beetle-kill” trees, a new use of lumber recovered from the pine beetle infestation that has destroyed many Colorado forests. The building cladding is covered in live plantings appropriate for the geography, to make an environmental contribution. BOX Studios wants everyone to know that beef-eaters love their planet too!

A Treasure Under the Chicago L TrainSaigon Sister

A hidden jewel under the elevated train tracks is discovered by many transit riders passing through Chicago's central business district. Below the rugged El tracks with its piercing noise of metal on metal sits Saigon Sisters Restaurant, the latest addition to the Fulton River District’s lively restaurant scene. A vast expansive glass wall is used to celebrate the true grit of the surroundings. The tables and chairs provide no frills, just real, honest character, in this stunning industrial setting.

Mulan Let’s head to Chinatown for grilled wagyu beef flavored with lemongrass and maybe seafood bouillabaisse served on glass noodles. Huh? Call it New American/Asian. Mulan is beginning to attract the clientele it richly deserves. This is a true measure of how design can influence the bottom line.

An innovative conference center design integrates technology, functionality and aesthetics.

Welcome to an environment where an innovative approach can inspire an entirely new outcome, where the opportunity to exceed expectations continues beyond meeting room walls. While other organizations have built conference spaces, few have approached the best-in-class distinction through the concept of the multi-purpose team work center. The main objective was to achieve a more comprehensive utilization of space while creating an exceptionally collaborative meeting environment, which would in turn increase workers’ productivity. The client wanted to have a competitive advantage and better decision making as a result of flexible space. Working within an existing core/shell, the design team needed to incorporate the client’s needs, surrounding area, and technology standards into the Modern Prairie concept. The Conference Center has now become an influential setting that encourages the effective exchange of ideas and allows inspiration and creativity to foster productivity.

The Conference Center is a unique meeting, event and work environment that can be custom-tailored to accommodate groups of 4 to 300. A variety of rooms, meticulously designed to provide ergonomic comfort, facilitate productivity and foster breakthrough moments. The new space offers an advanced array of capabilities, including wireless high speed internet access; video conferencing and teleconferencing capabilities; complete audiovisual/high speed access; infrastructure that functions to combine or separate adjacent meeting rooms; in-room audiovisual control panels with fingertip operations to adjust climate; floor to ceiling windows that provide natural light in the majority of conference rooms; ergonomic seating; modular work spaces; white boards and tackable surfaces; speaker platforms and lecterns; and inviting seating areas. Whether the need is for a quiet off-site meeting to discuss confidential information, or an easily accessed training facility, the environment is ideal for solo use as well as meetings of all size and duration.

An Innovative Conference Center

Modern Prairie design elements are used in unexpected ways throughout the space. The result is a cohesive design that reflects and communicates the client’s forward-thinking and cutting edge image.

The design was engaged to re-purpose, re-position and remodel an existing building in a planned office park. The client and the design team commenced a rigorous process to define the program which would lead to the best interior space layout and user functionality. The designers compiled published research on emerging workplace trends and asked provocative questions on how to rethink group work. Through this brainstorming collaboration, new and unique planning criteria emerged. The innovative approach was built around support for group work and mobility. It provided flexibility for the changing drivers that define meeting space.

The group set necessary criteria for the best meeting experience that would be supported by infrastructure and support both communications technology and human comfort. Desirable amenities included user-friendly multimedia capability, zoned and automated lighting, flexible furnishings, superior acoustics, upgraded heating and cooling controls, break-out areas for collaboration, uncomplicated wayfinding, and a welcoming yet businesslike atmosphere.

The entire team worked dynamically and successfully executed the conference center on budget and on time. Behind the elegant interior facade lies a highly technical Audio Visual and Lighting Control infrastructure that provides easy use of controls that blends technology, functionality and aesthetics to provide a complete positive experience.
