What the Boy’s Reading Club is all about…
In the academic achievement assessments carried out by the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) a large international sample of girls and boys were tested. The result: a trend in education has emerged, namely that there is a significant gender gap in reading and writing. Girls performed significantly better than boys on these reading and writing tests. Lower academic achievement can have a negative impact on self-esteem, and poor reading performance can also have a profound effect on lack of accomplishment in other subjects. The Boy’s Reading Club was designed by Laurier Student’s for Literacy (LSFL) as a way to acknowledge and remedy this growing trend. The Boy’s Reading Club is geared towards elementary school boys and helping them with all elements of literacy. As a committee LSFL volunteers will come together every other Thursday from 4:00 to 5:00pm in order to form the Boys Reading Club. By incorporating superheroes, action figures, and comic books the Boys Reading Club promotes getting boys involved in reading, writing, and fun. Every other week there will be a new: theme, activity, and occasionally a special event.
