Wired LAN, Wireless LAN, and Broadband over Powerline

Wired LAN Wireless LAN BPL

Installation Time-consuming, expensive,disruptive.

Easier than wired, but physicalor environmental issues can limiteffective deployment.

Simple – installed within days with minimal equipment and without disruption

Cost High initial sunken costs; minimalongoing costs.

High initial costs, minimal ongoingcosts. Can cost more than wired withthe need to run cables and installadditional access points

Low installation and operatingcosts.

Reliability Extremely reliable

Reliability is reduced by interferencefrom various sources and types ofconstruction.

Highly reliable

Performance

Very good up to 1000 Mbps

Fair, common is 54 Mbps, few up to 108 Mbps

Good, up to 200 Mbps, 1000 Mbps is development

Security Physical security only

Fair, WEP, WPA-PSK,, WPA2-PSK DES/3DES encryption

Mobility Limited Very Good Good

What is Broadband over Powerline?

A technology that transforms the standard electric power grid into a communications route to carry broadband telecommunications along its entire length and to every utility device on the grid and to every consumer outlet.

The broadband signal is “injected” into the powerlines at strategic points, most

often the utility substation “regenerated” along the grid route to assure good signal

quality “extracted” from the powerlines at any point to provide

communication services through specialized, low cost modems

BPL Concept

BPL* (broadband over power line) uses low voltage/LV (80-240v) or medium voltage (MV) for high speed data transfer medium, instead of phone line cable, UTP, or fiber optics

*BPL sometimes also referred as PLC: Powerline Communication

Internet ready building

Making multi tenant unit (MTU) ready for high-speed broadband services using IP with the entire required infrastructure, network, operation, and service function.

Internet service has become the next utility after electricity, telephone, water and gas.

In Building Broadband Access – Technology Options

Powerline (and Powerline over Coax)are the only In-Home

distribution technologies suitable for all Applications

Technology Strengths Weaknesses

Wi-Fi Widespread No VideoDead spotInterference (no QoS/QoE)

Wired (FO or UTP) Well known Need new wiring system

Coax (EOC, MoCA, HPNA)

TV Location Not available everywhere

BPL (Powerline) Whole Home Coverage, Video (Including HD)

Market Awareness, Technology advancement not known

Page 11: Bpl access network 101 v1

Benefits

Triple play (Data, Voice, Video) capability for users

Low cost installation Plug-it, simple installation Time to revenue for building owner Increase building value Central manageability High scalability Creating reliable, secure users access to

Broadband beyond wireless hot spots ingress and intermediate RF outage
