Wednesday Must Hand-in Task Copy and Paste the shapes on the first abacus to show the correct amount for each number.
This STEM challenge requires you to solve problems that our servicemen and women may have faced in the past. This parachute activity was inspired by the incredible story of Flight Lieutenant Joe Herman, which you can read further below.
ObjectiveSelect a range of materials to create a parachute that will get your ‘person’ safely to the ground.
MaterialsFor the 'person' you can use eggs, clothes pegs, pipe cleaner soldiers, Lego men, etc. Below is a list of suggested materials you could use to make the parachute:
Two parachutes save one life (The miraculous story of Joe Herman)
During a night-time air raid over Germany in 1944, Australian Joe Herman's 'Halifax' bomber was hit by German anti-aircraft fire and disintegrated before Herman could put on his parachute. Free-falling thousands of meters, Herman was bracing for death when he hit something mid-air and instinctively grabbed hold. He had in fact collided with his mid-upper gunner, Flight Sergeant John Vivash, and was now clutching his legs. Both men descended on Vivash's parachute and landed safely, albeit in enemy territory. For four days they evaded the Germans before being captured and spending the next six months as prisoners of war.
Project Parachute
• scissors• tape• paper clips• pipe cleaners• string• dental floss• newspaper• plastic bags• tissue paper• paper• plastic cups
MethodOnce you have constructed your parachute, attach your person securely and test your creation. Measure your hang time (seconds) and distance from drop to landing (centimetres). This can be done outside, off playground equipment, or in a stairwell, for example.

Week 1: What is the Sun?
Learning Intentions❏ I will be able to develop questions about the sun.❏ I will be able to create my own quiz to reflect knowledge and understanding.❏ I will be able to use technology skills to design algorithms; using branching
and adding user input.
Instructions:
Watch: The Sun https://clickv.ie/w/8YMlRecord: What do you know about our Sun? Write all of your ideas down. Read: Sun Fact sheet.Review: Sun of Suns game questions and Question algorithm example. Task: Create your own quiz and test your family.
Sun solar Solar system universe star core
orbit degrees Celsius temperature energy surface
The Sun
The Sun has been studied by humans, scientists, and astronomers for as long as people have been around. In the 16th
and 17th centuries astronomers like Galileo and Isaac Newton began to study the Sun and learned that planets orbit the
Sun due to gravity. In the early 1900s Albert Einstein used the formula E=MC2 to explain how the Sun generated so much
energy.
The Sun is a yellow dwarf star at the center of our Solar System. All the planets of the Solar System orbit around the Sun.
The Sun and the Solar System orbit around the center of our Galaxy, the Milky Way. The planets in our solar system are
Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. There are also dwarf planets such as Pluto, dozens of
moons and millions of asteroids, comets and meteoroids of all shapes and sizes.
Fun Facts:
● The sun is around 4.6 billion years old.● More than one million Earths could fit into the sun.● It takes 8 minutes for light from the sun to reach us here on Earth.● At its core, the sun is about 15 million degrees Celsius.● The Sun is all the colours mixed together, this appears white to our eyes.● The Sun is an almost perfect sphere.● The Sun travels at 220 kilometres per second.● Your eyes can get ‘sunburnt’.
Task: Create your own quiz questions about the Sun using algorithms and user input. Then ask a family member your quiz questions and see how they go.
