BAKEWELL AND EYAM COMMUNITY TRANSPORT Would you like to become a volunteer for Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport (BECT)? We provide accessible transport for rural communities across Derbyshire Dales and the Peak District. In the whole of 2019 there were 1847 pas- senger car journeys provided for people living in local commu- nities. Volunteers help individuals who struggle to use con- ventional transport, perhaps disadvantaged because of age or disability or simply because no local scheduled services exist. All you need to help is a little spare time, access to a car and to have held a full driving licence for at least three years. There is no need to make a regular commitment, you can help with as little as one journey per month or as much as five per week; the choice is yours and is totally flexible. The rewards of volunteering for the community car scheme are many and include the chance to give something back to your community and help people live more independent lives, the opportunity to make new friends and participate in social events, and the chance to learn new skills. We need more Volunteer Car Driv- ers to help us to continue to provide this much valued service, and are looking for Volunteers to become Buddies for the Car Scheme and some of our Bus Journeys. PARISH COUNCIL NEWS

Parking problems: Parking problems continue in the village with cars parking on the pavements causing obstructions. It has become very dangerous for the children walking from the school to the Memorial hall for their PE lessons. Both the school and Council have requested help from the police in trying to resolve the issue. PCSO Boswell has visited the vil-lage to understand the problems and to see how the police can help. Council are looking at different areas in the village which could be used for parking. However, this will take some time and local residents will be consulted before any new parking spaces are installed. In the meantime, we ask that everyone respect the pavements and not park on them. Bradwell Edge: District Councillor Furness advises that the work on Edge lane to improve the section between the met-aled section and the gate is ordered, funds allocated and pro-grammed to be done. A date for the work to be completed is unavailable at the moment as there are higher priority works to be completed first due to the water damage in the county. Streetlights: We continue to report all non-working lights and encourage resident to do the same. Faults can be reported to Derbyshire County Council on their website. They require the location or the light number in order to log the fault. Carnival 2020: Carnival Saturday this year is on 1st August. Initial planning has already begun and will continue during the coming months. If anyone would like to help with planning or to offer new ideas, we would be delighted to hear from you. Please contact the Parish Clerk or attend the next meeting. Applications are invited from village organisations who would like to benefit from the street collection during the parade. You would need to provide your own manpower, but this can raise essential funds for your organisation. If you are interested, please contact the Parish Clerk. Parish Council Vacancies: Council still need to fill the cur-rent vacancies. If you are interested, please do come to one of the monthly meetings to see how we operate. If you want more information contact the Council Chair at [email protected] or the Clerk at [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to join a proactive council and we look forward to members joining the team

Car parking: There are some spaces available to rent at Softwater Lane Carpark. The cost is £25 pcm or £300 annual. If you are interested in renting this space, please contact the parish clerk. Public Participation: Residents continue to attend council meetings to raise matters of concern directly with Council. We welcome members of the public at both the main council and all committee meetings. Council meetings are generally held at 7:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of most months in the Meth-odist Lounge on Towngate. See the parish notice boards (on the side of the Memorial Hall and in the Peace Gardens bus shelter) for meeting announcements and agendas.

CAN YOU HELP?

We have lived in Bradwell for the past twenty years and really want to stay part of the community. However, we have to move as our landlord is selling our house. Please can anyone help us? We are looking for a 2 bedroom home with garden for ourselves and our dog and cat and are willing to pay a realistic rent. if you can help then please contact Alison and Anni on 01433 621923.

C.P.R. TRAINING

If one of your friends or family need CPR, would you know what to do? Only 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital car-diac arrest. You can help improve the survival rate by knowing how to carry out CPR. We are running two training sessions at 18.30 & 19.30 on March 25th at the Memorial Hall, Netherside. So, whether you need to learn or just want to refresh your skills, come and join us. CPR is easy, straightforward to learn and anyone can do it. Please let me know if you are coming, thanks, [email protected]

WAR MEMORIAL HALL

“BRADDA LOTTO”

The wonderful response from the village means that the LOT-TO organisers have decided to award additional prize money. The final decision will be made prior to the closing date for entries which is 31st March 2020. Our first Draw will take place on Wednesday 8th April at 8.30pm in the White Hart. A full list of venues and dates of draws will be made available shortly and placed on the notice board at the side of the Memorial Hall. Each draw will take place on the second Wednesday of each month and prize winners will be personally notified. The winning numbers will also be posted each month at the Memo-rial Hall and the local Post Office. Finally, if you have not yet joined this fund raising project, applications forms can still be obtained from the Post Office – or phoning 620336. Don’t be disappointed! You cannot join this Lotto after the closing date.

BRADWELL COMMUNITY LAND TRUST

Long-term residents who can remember when Newburgh Hall was the hub of village social life will have been sad to see the sorry state to which the building has declined in recent years. However, plans are developing which will give it a new lease of life. A need has been identified in the village for affordable three, two and one bedroom rental accommodation. The first need is being met, as reported recently in this newsletter, by our partnership with Peak District Rural Housing Association which has kept twelve formerly Newburgh owned 3-bedroom houses in Bradwell Head Road and Springfield Road in the affordable rental sector. The CLT owned houses being built on the Bradwell Springs development will satisfy the 2-bedroom need, which just leaves a need for single bedroom units. The recent sale of Newburgh Hall has given us an opportunity to partly address this need by converting the building into one-

bedroom apartments. Bradwell CLT and Peak District Rural Housing have acquired the Hall under the same arrangement as the existing Newburgh houses (we will own the freehold and PDHRA will manage the dwellings on a long-term lease). Ideal-ly we would like to see ‘upside-down’ two-storey apartments with living rooms on the upper floor so that tenants can enjoy the wonderful views. This development is still in an early stage, with plans only recently drawn up for submission to the Peak Park planning authority. However, we are hopeful that in due course three or four one-bedroom dwellings will be available and a prominent local building will get a much needed refur-bishment into the bargain.

COMPUTERS

Do you, like me have the odd problem with your computer? Do you sometimes feel like throwing it out of the window? If you do then there is someone local who might be able to help. Paul Roberts, who grew up in the village and has re-cently returned, is a qualified computer engineer and availa-ble to help local people with their computer problems at rea-sonable rates. Call 07807 342471 or [email protected]

EYAM AND BRADWELL SURGERY

Please note that if you are travelling to more than two countries on a trip or holiday, you will need to have your vaccinations done at a Travel Clinic - we cannot offer them at Eyam or Bradwell Surgery in this situation. However, if you are travelling to only one or two destinations on your trip, you may be able to have your vaccinations done at our surgery. Please contact the surgery at least 10 weeks be-fore you travel in order to organise this. You will be asked to fill in a travel assessment form before the appointments are booked. (Please note that the appointment may be sub-ject to change, once the Practice Nurse has reviewed your travel assessment form).

NEW GROUP

Hope Valley Climate Action is a newly-formed climate action group in the Peak District with over 300 members. We work in our communi-ties to take effective action on climate change in the Hope Valley and beyond. Our aim is to reduce the Hope Valley’s carbon emissions and build resilient communities that can face the challenges of climate change togeth-

er. You can find us at hvca.uk or on Facebook.

FOX and NOBLETT FUNDING

As was reported in the last newsletter, residual funds from the Fox & Noblett charity have been transferred to the War Memorial Hall so that they can continue to benefit residents of Bradwell. It has been hard to decide where it can be of most use, but the hall committee decided to purchase com-fortable, new chairs for the hall. We hope that you will have been able to enjoy Pantomime in greater comfort as a re-sult. A total of 130 new chairs have been bought at a cost of £3,700. Please help us take care of them!

BRADDA DADS

In January we were pleased to be able to help fund the pro-duction of some new staging and the children’s half time ice creams for the village pantomime. The Wolfspit fell race takes place on Sunday 29th March. For entries look online at Fabian4.co.uk .

TERENCE GREEN

6th July 1953 – 6th January 2020

Terry was born in Chesterfield to Effie and Len Green and grew up in Bradwell, attending the local primary school and then Lady Manners School in Bakewell. He left Bradwell in 1971 to study Phar-macology in Sunderland. After graduat-ing he worked in Swindon, Wiltshire for a few years before moving to St Ives, Cambridgeshire. He married Valerie, whom he had met whilst in Sunderland, in 1981. They had their first child, David in 1982 and their second, Louise in

1985. A move to Chelmsford in 1988 followed as Terry changed jobs and their third child, Nicola, was born in 1990. Terry had many interests, his main ones being music, running, walking and sport. He always enjoyed visiting Bradwell and walking in the Peak District. He ran four marathons and the Sheffield half marathon and was a keen supporter of Sheffield United. He loved listening to classical music, both at concerts and at home via the extensive online playlists he’d created. He was a wonderful and much-loved husband and father and was thrilled to become a grandfather to Francesca and Lau-rence. He was also the dearly loved son of Len, who still lives in Bradwell.

****************** WORLD DAY OF PRAYER

On Friday 6th March, the World Day of Prayer, people through-out the world will be thinking of and praying for the people of Zimbabwe. The service has been prepared by the women of Zimbabwe and most of the churches in the Hope Valley will be

joining in prayer for that country. Crippling drought and spiral-ling food prices have worsened the food shortages in Zimba-bwe. Catholic Church leaders and those of other Christian denominations have called for urgent action to tackle the cri-sis saying: “We are currently faced with a national humanitari-an and emergency situation and commit ourselves to up scal-ing our efforts towards health, education, development and humanitarian assistance to help alleviate the suffering of Zim-babweans.” Knowing that 1.7 million people are affected, here in the Hope Valley our local CAFOD group have been able to help in a very small way by sending £1,000 to the Food Crisis Appeal. Margaret Peel (St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Hathersage)
