Pre-Kindergarten is an early literacy program combining play with learning. Our children
play and explore our classroom while gaining valuable social skills which also help prepare
them for Kindergarten. Activity centres include math readiness, science, literacy,
fine motor work (printing / cutting), art/craft, painting, sand/water, play dough, puzzles, blocks, story corner, and toys. Enrichment
activities throughout the year include special visitors who bring music, science, and movement activities to the children.
Kindergarten Enhancement is a half-day program which enables the Kindergarten
student to stay at school for the duration of the regular school day.
WINTER SESSION NEWSWinter themes are “Winter Wonderland,”
“Valentine’s Day,” Winter Olympics,” and an enhancement of our early literacy journey with “Famous Authors.” We also look forward to a visit from Mad Science this Winter Session, as
well as Jumping Jellies and Rick Hertert with his wonderful musical talent of engaging young
children.

Dear Constituents:
As we continue enjoying the winter activities, I have been delighted to stay engaged with the constituents/stake-holders and hear more about how we can make our prov-ince even better. Also, I am pleased to share that I have been appointed as the chair for the Standing Committee on Private Bills.
Boost in Alberta’s Economy: Alberta’s economy turned the corner in 2017, ending the year as the fastest-growing economy in the country with increases in nearly every sector.
This year, tens of thousands of full-time jobs were added to Alberta’s economy and the unemployment rate fell to its lowest level in two years. Average weekly earnings, ex-ports, manufacturing, drilling and housing starts were all up in 2017 and Alberta is expected to continue leading the country in economic growth in 2018.
As the economy keeps growing, so does Alberta’s popu-lation. Over the past three months it increased by nearly 20,000 people, causing total housing starts over the last year to rise 20 per cent from the previous 12-month period.
Consumer confidence also surged in 2017, reaching its highest level since the end of 2014. As a result, Alberta is setting all-time records in retail and hospitality sales.
With the implementation of the province’s modernized roy-alty program and the stabilization of oil prices, the number of exploratory and development wells drilled in September 2017 increased 75.4 per cent from the same period a year earlier, from 248 to 435. Per-capita private sector invest-ment also rose to more than twice the national average.
Quick facts• Average weekly earnings increased 2.3 per cent in 2017 to
$1,142, the highest in the country by far.• In October 2017, Alberta’s manufacturing sales increased
14.2 per cent compared with October 2016, to $6.02 bil-lion. Nationally, manufacturing increased only 4.3 per cent over the same period.
Councillor, Ward 11 Jeromy [email protected]/ward11
Dear Friends,
It was a busy start to the year with hosting the first ever Ward 11 Town Hall. Thanks to all those who attended the forum and a special thanks to the Pump Hill Bayview Palliser Community Association for hosting the event!
Many of you contacted me about the proposed changes to secondary suite reform that City Council debated at the end of 2017. I oppose blanket rezoning, but I believe that the current approach to secondary suites, where homeowners plead their case at Council public hearings, isn’t working. My family chose to live in an R1 neighbour-My family chose to live in an R1 neighbour-hood for a reason and want to see choice in housing maintained. At present, when City Council decides to approve a secondary suite (which is the case nearly 95% of the time), that decision cannot be challenged.
Next month, Council will be debating changes regard-ing the secondary suite approval process with the most significant change being that all requests would be reviewed through an objective administrative process (checklist around issues such as parking, safety, traffic) rather than through a subjective decision made by City Council. The proposed reforms also include bringing back fees so that taxpayers are not absorbing applica-tion costs and, if a secondary suite is approved, adjacent property owners can appeal the decision through a quasi-judicial and independent board.
I will continue to ask tough questions regarding City Coun-cil’s priorities and spending including questioning the need for multi-million-dollar projects like the SWBRT that have no proven ridership. I remain committed to ensuring that taxpayers are getting value for money on everyday services like waste and recycling. I encourage you to con-tinue to share your views on these issues with me and I want to hear from all sides. As your Councillor, my job is to represent you rather than impose City Hall’s view on you.
Finally, please join me at the next monthly Town Hall taking place on Thursday, February 15, 2018 from 7:00 to 8:30pm at the Oakridge Community Centre (9504 Oakfield Drive SW). Thank you, Oakridge Com-munity Association, for being this month’s host! Great things happen when we work together.

25th Anniversary Brick Pathway - Phase 1 Now In-stalled and Phase 2 Bricks are Selling Fast!
Thank you to everyone who dedicated a brick, we sin-cerely appreciate your support! An anniversary brick would make an amazing gift for anyone who enjoys visiting Fish Creek or as a memorial to a loved one. Be-come part of history and show your support for this cherished natural area by dedicating a brick today. All funds raised through this program will help us to real-ize our vision of a sustainable Fish Creek Provincial Park
that improves the lives of current and future genera-tions. There are less than 150 anniversary bricks avail-able to be installed in front of the Friends’ office at the Cookhouse and we are planning to install them in early spring 2018. Bricks are only $250 each and you will re-ceive a tax receipt. For more information contact the Friends or visit www.friendsoffishcreek.org/brick.
Park Protectors Needed! As an alternative to annual membership renewals, the Park Protector program may suit your busy lifestyle a little better. Show your support for Fish Creek Provincial Park, a natural urban oasis we are fortunate to have in the city by joining the Park Protector monthly donor program. As a Fish Creek Provincial Park Protector, you can make monthly donations to the Friends of Fish Creek, which are automatically withdrawn from your bank account, VISA or MasterCard account. A steady, re-liable source of funding will enable the Friends to con-tinue with ongoing fieldwork, raising awareness about the park, and organizing and participating at commu-nity outreach activities. Park Protectors never have to worry about keeping donations or membership up to date and will receive one tax receipt a year.

Happy New Year from the Woodcreek Scouts to each and every one of
you. May each new day of this beautiful new year fill your homes with much love and happiness.
We thank all of you in the community that bought a tree for the Christmas season from the Scouts tree lots. If you ordered Scouts popcorn from us we truly hope you en-joyed all the yumminess during the holiday season. All of these fundraisers mean a lot to us.
All of our kids from the smallest Beaver to the oldest Ven-ture were out in full force on Saturday January 6th for our biggest bottle drive of the year. This event is crucial for our programs to run efficiently and to have adequate funding for the kids’ events and camps. We thank all of you in our community for your valuable support to us each and every year. Just a reminder that we have an ac-count set up at the Tsuu T’ina Bottle Depot located at 20 Bullhead Road SW under the name ‘Woodcreek Scouts’ if ever you wish to donate bottles to us during the year.
December finished up with many Christmas parties and games in all the groups. Of course, the gingerbread cookie decorating is always the biggest hit.
The new year will start off with lots of excitement build-ing cars and truck of all types for the big races coming up city-wide. Beavers build “beaver buggies,” cubs build “kub kars,” scouts build “scout trucks.” There are very strict rules on what the size and weight can be for each vehicle. There are even rules for the children behavior: 1.The spirit of the Scout Law applies.2.Those who exhibit poor sportsmanship will be re-quested to leave.
This tends to become a family activity as most of the work is done at home together with moms and dads, kids get awards for best design, fastest car, etc. So much fun.
There is lots on information on the Scouts Canada web-site for anyone interested in finding out more.
Were you in a Scouting program growing up? Do you have some ideas to share with us on what your Group enjoyed during your youth? Do you work at a Company that you feel might benefit the kids to take a tour of? We welcome all of your ideas and your help in as little or as much time to us as you can give. Any questions and ideas can be passed onto our Group Commissioner, Tim Tratch at 403-251-4878.
Thank you to our long standing dedicated sponsors the Local Lions Club and the Woodcreek Community Asso-ciation for all of their support throughout the year.
