Module 6 Activity: Reading a story (In the jungle) Unit 1: Trees: Reading skills/Thinking and reasoning

Deep in the jungle live the Hum family. They are no bigger than your thumb. They live under a tree stump. There they have their home. Mr. and Mrs. Hum have three children.

Sunny Hum is the eldest. He is a happy boy. He likes to help his dad. His sister is Dusty Hum. She likes to have fun in the jungle.

The Hum family like to hum. When they wake up, they hum. When they go to bed, they hum. When they are working, they hum. The Hum family have many chums.

Then there is Tubby Hum. He is the baby in the family. Tubby Hum likes to run and jump. He likes to eat buns and rusks. He has a round little tummy.

They like to help the animals in the jungle. Some of their chums live nearby. One of the chums is Gump. He is a little buck. Gump trusts the Hum family.

The Hum family get up at sunrise. They like to dunk their rusks in a mug of hot tea. Every morning Gump comes to visit them. He tells them what is going on in the jungle.

Gump lives with his chums. Fluff is a fluffy bunny. Puff is a skunk. They live under a clump of trees. They run and play in the jungle with Dusty and Tubby. It is safe in the jungle.

Gump goes jump, jump, jumping to the tree stump. He is huffing and puffing. Mr. Hum is in the garden. Sunny helps his dad in the garden. Dusty and Tubby jump off Gump's back.

One day as they run about having fun, they hear a trumpet. The animals are afraid. "Jump on my back," says Gump to Dusty and Tubby.

"Help us, help us!" shouts Gump. Mr. Hum and Sunny run to Gump. "We can hear a trumpet in the jungle," puffs Gump. "What can it be? We are afraid."

"It must be some hunters," says Mr. Hum. "Tell your chums to hide away." Mr. Hum goes into his house under the tree stump. He gets his drum. He sits on the tree stump.

Mr. Hum beats on his drum. Trum, trum, trumpity trum goes the drum. Suddenly hundreds and hundreds of bugs are at the tree stump.

The bugs can see the hunters in the jungle. The hunters have guns and a trumpet. The bugs fly down. They sit on the hunters. They stick like gum on the hunters.

"There are hunters in the jungle," says Mr. Hum. "We need your help." The bugs say "Buzz, buzz, buzz. We will get rid of the hunters." Up, up, up go the bugs.

The bugs sting the hunters. The hunters begin to run. They run out of the jungle. The hunters jump into a truck. The guns fall in the mud.

The trumpet falls in the mud. The hunters do not pick up the guns. They do not pick up the trumpet. They are afraid of the bugs. They drive away in the truck.

The bugs have saved the animals. "Thank you very much, says the Hum family. "Thank you very much," say the animals. "We are only a drum beat away," buzz the bugs. "Call us if you need us."

For a long time the animals are safe. But … suddenly … one day Gump hears the trumpet in the jungle. Gump goes jump, jump, jumping to the tree stump.

The Hum family are in their house. They are dunking their rusks in a mug of hot tea. Gump thumps on the little door. "Help us, help us!" pants Gump.

"The hunters must be back," says Mr. Hum. "The bugs did not keep them out. I will get my drum." Mr. Hum beats on his drum. Thump, thump, thump goes the drum.

There is a rumble in the jungle. One hundred elephants come to the tree stump. "What can we do?" trumpet the elephants. "There are hunters in the jungle," says Mr. Hum. He jumps onto the elephant's trunk.

The elephants rush to the hunters. They lift their trunks and their tusks. They rush at the hunters. The elephants trumpet. The hunters are afraid.

"Thank you elephants," say the animals. "The hunters will not be back," say the elephants. "You are safe in the jungle." Mr. Hum and his family and the animals are not afraid.

The hunters run out of the jungle. They jump into their truck. The elephants rush after them. They get away. The hunters do not go into the jungle again.
