PRICE: $17.50 CAT #: ATA 022EP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC BRADOCK, PEPEDactylonomy II 12" Counting on the fingers leads us to the "Index", displaying the non-exhaustive list of sonic bits used on twenty years of Pepe's phonograms. "To Dance or not to Dance," that is probably not the question, but definitely the answer to the A Side. Vice Versa, the B side whispers "Ur Host": an army of electronic arpeggios welcoming an atmospheric cure for after hours, introducing "Pitcher" not the carnivorous plant but the friendly musical path to the strike zone; "Danske*Mansus", a refreshing retro futuristic techno-ball, housing ardent grooves and cold sweats. Wandering your way out to sync and lock this second chapter, "Inter-Oger" fades to esoteric dreamscapes. Please enjoy this index of coordinated sequences and chopped waveforms! BA DA BING!

PRICE: $10.00 CAT #: BING 164CD FILE UNDER: ROCK JENKINS,CASSANDRAAn Overview on Phenomenal Nature CD "'Nothing ever really disappears,' Cassandra Jenkins says. 'It just changes shape.' Over the past few years, she's seen relationships altered, travelled three continents, wandered through museums and parks, and recorded free-associative guided tours of her New York haunts. Her observations capture the humanity and nature around her, as well as thought patterns, memories, and attempts to be present while dealing with pain and loss. With a singular voice, Jenkins siphons these ideas into the ambient folk of her new album. An Overview on Phenomenal Nature honors flux, detail, and moments of intimacy. Jenkins arrived at engineer Josh Kaufman's studio with ideas rather than full songs -- nevertheless, they finished the album in a week. Jenkins' voice floats amid sensuous chamber pop arrangements and raw-edged drums, ferrying the listener through impressionistic portraits of friends and strangers. Her lyrics unfold magical worlds, introducing one to a cast of characters, like a local fisherman, a psychic at a birthday party, and a driving instructor of a spiritual bent. Jenkins' last record, 2017's Play Till You Win, confirmed the veteran artist's talent. Evident of Jenkins' experience growing up in a family band in New York City, the album showcased her meticulous songwriting and musicianship, earning her comparisons to George Harrison and Emmylou Harris. Jenkins has since played in the bands of Eleanor Friedberger, Craig Finn, and Lola Kirke, and rehearsed to tour with Purple Mountains last August before the tour's cancellation. Her new record departs from her previous work in its openness and flexibility, following her peripatetic lifestyle. 'The goal is to be more fluid, to be more like the clouds shifting constantly,' she says. The approach allowed Jenkins to express herself like she never has."

BORN BAD RECORDS (FRANCE)

PRICE: $19.50 CAT #: BORNBAD 002LPFILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC VA BIPPP: French Synth-Wave 1979/85 LP 2021 restock. Increasingly detached from the original punk formula, the modern and arty youth of the early '80s set itself to jettison an art form that had lost much of the nihilistic and exhilarating energy of its halcyon days, stuck, as it was, in an endless and noisy regression. Disheartened but eager to experiment and create, a new wave of French musicians followed the beacon of Jacno's seminal '79 hit "Rectangle," a visionary, digital coup de grâce, courtesy of a former punk which dealt the Rickenbacker and Fender-era a fatal blow. The cold and robot-like bips of analogic keyboards took over. Casio, Korg MS-10 and Arp Omni were the new paraphernalia of the new generation -- the ideal conveyers of its retro-futurist elegance and self-professed cold arrogance. They were pinnacles and symbols which were just as potent as the electric guitar in the '50s or the laptop in the '90s. This compilation recalls the glory of a selected few, the cream of the crop of the shooting stars and cult bands that followed in the footsteps of Kas Product, Mathematiques Modernes or Charles De Goal. Featuring Ruth's infinitely charming "Polaroid/Roman/Photo," plus A Trois Dan Les WC, Act, Les Visiteurs Du Soir, Vox Dei, TGV, CKC, Marie Möör, Deux, Vitor Hublot, Visible and Casino Music.

PRICE: $19.50 CAT #: BORNBAD 013LPFILE UNDER: ROCK VA WIZZZ!French Psychorama 1966-1970 Volume 2 LP 2021 repress. Since the success of the first volume in 2002, WIZZZ! has been considered the benchmark compilation of French '60s alternative pop. It launched an unprecedented craze for this rare breed of disc, featuring exceptionally danceable rhythms, twisted sounds from another world and demented lyrics, coupled with an underlying sense of mockery. It focuses on the creativity of these French artists who dared to break with the boring commercial conventions of their era. If your notion of French '60s music is based on innocuous hits from the likes of Adamo and Sheila, this new collection of rare and unreleased tracks, unearthed from the obscure depths of made-in-France pop, will astonish you with the brilliance and daring of a few of their deranged cousins, who passed completely unnoticed in the epoch of Gainsbourg. WIZZZ! 2 rediscovers and revitalizes these underground geniuses and freaks. Their audacity and inventiveness refutes those who sneer about the alleged inferiority of French pop. Includes a 36-page booklet. BRUBECK EDITIONS

PRICE: $25.00 CAT #: BELP 20200901LPFILE UNDER: JAZZ BRUBECKQUARTET, THE DAVETime OutTakes LP "'Time OutTakes features seven tracks that have never been heard before. These newly discovered recordings feature wonderful performances that are every bit as compelling as those on the original Time Out. We discovered that during the original 1959 sessions the Quartet also recorded 'I'm In a Dancing Mood' and an unlisted trio jam with a major drum solo that included snatches of the melody from 'Watusi Drums.' Two tracks from Time Out, 'Pick Up Sticks' and 'Everybody's Jumpin,' were achieved in one take so no alternates exist to include here. These seven new performances (and bonus track) are fascinating finds.' --Chris Brubeck 'We've all heard Dave Brubeck's Time Out -- but never quite like this. You'll hear Dave Brubeck's signature pieces afresh and anew. Listening to this album will make you rediscover why you fell in love with The Dave Brubeck Quartet featuring Paul Desmond, Joe Morello and Eugene Wright. This is mesmerizing music.' --Kabir Sehgal, Grammy Award Winning Producer 'Once the Dave Brubeck Quartet released Time Out in 1959, the world of jazz was never the same. Every note of the seven original compositions soared with wild originality and trained musical genius. 'Take Five' became the best-selling jazz single of the twentieth century. I've often wondered how this work of genius came to fruition in the studio? How did Brubeck develop such chemistry with alto-saxophonist Paul Desmond? Now the mysteries are solved with the historic release of Time OutTakes (alternative takes to the masterpiece that blew the hinges off the doors of jazz). What a high privilege it is to be able to be in the studio with the quartet as they innovate using 9/8, 5/4 and 2 bars of 3/4 alternating with 2 bars of 4/4 on such classics as 'Blue Rondo a la Turk' and 'Three to Get Ready.' All listeners of Time OutTakes will experience the Cold War era jazz revolution as it unfolded. What joyous music for the ages!" --Douglas Brinkley, CNN historian and Grammy-winning jazz producer CAMISOLE RECORDS (FRANCE)

PRICE: $27.50 CAT #: CAM 019LP FILE UNDER: ROCK COLDREAMS CrazyNight LP After the repress of their single Eyes/Morning Rain (CAM 014EP), Camisole Records announce the reissue of Coldreams' tape Crazy Night. Recorded in 1984-1985 by a gang of young students passionate about post-punk, this record represents the culmination of the band first period. Haunted lyrics and melancholia were already the basics of their sound and from "Don't Cry" to "Crazy Night/Burning Passion," it's difficult to imagine that they were only 18 to 19 years old at that time. "Bulbs and Bubbles" and "Turn the Button" show their pop appeal which definitely takes them apart from their contemporaries and all-around gloomy feelings infuse these six tracks which unveils another part of Coldreams history. Remastered from original tapes. Available for the first time on vinyl, fully licensed. Includes insert with band history and unpublished pictures. CHERRY RED (UK)

PRICE: $29.00 CAT #: PCDTRED 829CDFILE UNDER: ROCK MASCIS, J Fed Up And Feeling Strange: Live And In Person 1993-1998 3CD "Having established Dinosaur Jr as a mainstay of, and influence over, the alternative scene by the mid-1990s, J Mascis began to venture out alone, performing acoustic sets of his band's material, alongside occasional cover versions. Fed Up And Feeling Strange captures three shows recorded across the decade, shedding a fascinating, low wattage light on J and his songs. Live At CBGB captures J's first solo show, performed at the legendary New York club in December 1993, whilst Martin + Me, which now includes a previously unreleased bonus track, was recorded during a 1995 tour of the USA. Completing the set, a previously unreleased third show, recorded in Copenhagen in 1998, showcases songs from across Mascis' career, including material from Hand It Over, which would prove Dinosaur Jr's last album for almost twenty years." CINEDELIC RECORDS (ITALY)

PRICE: $31.00 CAT #: CNAY 111LP FILE UNDER: ROCK MACCHI,EGISTO Messico LP Restocked, last copies. Cinedelic Records present a reissue of Egisto Macchi's Messico, recorded in 1975. Limited numbered edition. Includes insert and download code. The artistic achievement of Egisto Macchi was avant-garde, not only for his immense talent and brilliance of his creativity, but for the quality he managed to infuse every musical language with - ranging from instrumental and symphonic music, musical theater, library sound, more varied and articulated. Towering over all of his works is his passion, commitment, respect and great inner need to break down the sectarian walls of thinking in categories. He had sensed that beauty could be located anywhere and that the biggest task entrusted to an artist was to leave the surface, always. Messico was originally released on the Ayna label. CORBETT VS. HBURY STABBINS DUOFire Without Bricks CD The duo of saxophonist Larry Stabbins and percussionist Roy Ashbury was a mainstay of the London improvised music scene in the early 1970s. They recorded their lone LP, Fire Without Bricks, in 1976, and issued it in a tiny edition on the cooperatively run Bead label. Stabbins has toggled between more pop-oriented projects like Working Week and Jerry Dammers Spatial AKA Orchestra and adventurous free music in bands led by Peter Brötzmann and Tony Oxley. Born in Wolverhampton and based initially in the Midlands, Ashbury gets less attention than his music deserves, but he, too, was an important figure in the period of the London Musician's Co-operative; he had left the scene by the mid-80s and worked in Media & Film Studies at St. Mary's College. The duo's music is super intimate and rooted in free jazz -- sometimes recalling great American saxophone/drum twosomes, or the other major touchstone of its time from closer to home, Evan Parker and Paul Lytton, but it has its own distinct flavor. Stabbins unique approach to tenor included a flinty quality and willingness to go all in on registral extremes with direct instrumental interplay on soprano, while Ashbury deploys a vast battery of metallics from chimes to chains, wood blocks, shakers, and bowed cymbals, all augmenting his minimal basic kit, which he approaches as a series of brilliant flourishes and almost Gagaku-like extended soundscapes. Their sound on this studio recording is an important untold part of the development of British improvised music. Mastered from pristine tapes, initially planned as part of John Corbett's Unheard Music Series, this reissue has been in the works for nearly two decades. Featuring facsimile cover from the original Bead issue.

PRICE: $20.00 CAT #: CVSD 068CD FILE UNDER: JAZZ INSTANTCOMPOSERS POOLIncipient ICP, 1966-71 2CD The untold early history of Amsterdam's seminal collective. Founded in 1967 by three of European free music's leading lights -- pianist Misha Mengelberg, drummer Han Bennink, and saxophonist and clarinetist Willem Breuker -- the Instant Composers Pool (ICP) was simply one of the most important vehicles for experimentation and improvisation in the history of creative music. Culling ideas and materials from jazz, modern and contemporary classical music, Fluxus, traditional music from the Balkans and elsewhere, as well as avant-garde theater, ICP was ahead of the pack in numerous ways, presenting a kind of irony-tinged, amalgamated version of free and structured improvisation -- or instant composition -- that would be a hallmark of subsequent movements in New York's downtown scene and elsewhere in Europe in decades to follow. Based on twenty years of deep research, Incipient ICP (1966-71) picks up the story just before the group's foundation, with previously unreleased recordings of groups led by Mengelberg in 1966, among them a performance of their notorious piece "Viet Cong," with Breuker joining the Mengelberg Quartet. The only tracks in this two-disc set that have been commercially released -- and only on the enormous 53-disc box set --come from studio sessions in 1967, featuring a mid-sized band with German trumpeter Manfred Schoof as special guest. These beautifully recorded tracks suggest the dichotomy between projects led by Mengelberg (two pieces) and those led by Breuker (four pieces), a schism that would grow until Breuker left the band in the mid-1970s to found his own group, the Willem Breuker Kollektief. Three more tracks led by Mengelberg in 1969 feature American keyboardist and composer Frederic Rzewski, as well as an incredible spotlight on Frans Brüggen's unusual amplified double-bass recorder. The final suite comes from a 1971 date led by Breuker, sans Mengelberg and Bennink. Moving more toward his Kolletief concept, Breuker leads a drumless quintet through his own cabaret-inflected pieces -- featuring Lodewijk de Boer's hardcore electric viola and brother Peter Bennink's alto and soprano saxophone -- as well as Albert Ayler's "Angels." The deluxe package sports contemporaneous photos of the players by Pieter Boersma.

PRICE: $15.00 CAT #: CVSD 073CD FILE UNDER: JAZZ VARIO 34 Vario 34-3 CD Since its first iteration in 1979, Vario has appeared in some fifty different versions, with a great variety of musicians, also actors, dancers, and filmmakers. It's the brainchild of Günter Christmann, a powerhouse of improvised music in Germany whose influence is out of scale with his acclaim. Since his emergence on the scene in the early 1970s, including appearances on classic FMP outings such as Rüdiger Carl Inc.'s King Alcohol (CVSD 032CD) and the eponymous Peter Kowald Quintet LP (CF 015LP, CVSD 070CD), as well as membership in groups like Globe Unity Orchestra and later King Übü Orchestrü, Christmann's trombone, cello, and bass playing has provided an icon of commitment to the cause of uncut improvised music, and his solo music is unparalleled. But Vario is perhaps the most central of his activities, focused on the shifting dynamics of group interplay. Vario 34 first performed in October, 1993, bringing Christmann and his contemporary, brilliant percussionist Paul Lovens, together with a triad of young upstarts -- saxophonist Mats Gustafsson, live-electronics specialist Thomas Lehn, and bassist Alexander Frangenheim. This quintet performed together for the third time in concerts on successive nights in Berlin and Christmann's hometown of Hannover in August, 2018, two gigs that were beautifully recorded. Vario 34-3 shows the strength of Christmann's concept -- a Vario ensemble is neither ad hoc nor a "working group," it's a slowly evolving organism, in this case one that has grown and changed along with its participants over the span of a quarter century. The results are high-caloric free music, brilliantly hued and textured, explosive and microcosmic. Personnel: Günter Christmann - cello, trombone; Alexander Frangenheim, double bass; Mats Gustafsson - soprano saxophone; Thomas Lehn, live-electronics; Paul Lovens - percussion. Recorded by Alexander Frangenheim and Antonio Pulli, August 21 and 22, 2018, in Berlin and Hannover. Mini-LP-style gatefold CD package with cover drawing by Christmann.

PRICE: $8.00 CAT #: CVSDS 002EP FILE UNDER: ROCK PARK, VANDYKES TheHistories (Old Black Joe) 7" Few musicians have had the word "legendary" affixed to theirs as many times as Van Dyke Parks. A great songwriter and musician in his own right whose cult classic LPs Song Cycle and Discover America helped expand the notion of what music of the Americas really meant, Parks has left an indelible mark on contemporary music, not least through his ornately imaginative production and arrangement, including landmark projects with The Beach Boys, Harry Nilsson, and Joanna Newsom, as well as LPs produced for the Esso Steel Band and the Mighty Sparrow. For a 2020 installation piece titled "The Histories (Old Black Joe)," Philadelphia-based artist David Hartt invited Parks to make an original arrangement of the Stephen Foster song "Old Black Joe." The kaleido-phonic result constitutes the A-side of this 7" single. With a collage-like feel featuring lush orchestration that's classic Parks, the track jump-cuts from mood to mood like Carl Stalling and features an explosive steel guitar part and a parting cameo by the Esso Steel Band. The B-side is a beautiful arrangement of "Souvenir de la Havane" by the pioneering pre-jazz American Creole composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Cover art and design by David Hartt. DIRT CREW (GERMANY)

PRICE: $14.50 CAT #: DIRT 129EP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC RHODE, LORENZSandpaper EP (feat. Jamie Lidell) 12" Dirt Crew present a new Lorenz Rhode release. For the Sandpaper EP, Lorenz Rhode and Jamie Lidell get together again. Their first collab "Any Kind of Pressure" was followed by Lorenz joining Jamie's world tour and a remix of "Big Love" for Warp Records. Jamie performs with an amazing energy, and his soulful voice is carried by a warm and playful house backing: Minimoog bass, Rhodes piano and just some sparkles of a very old Roland synth that Lorenz had just bought, and which is now broken. The second new jam "On the Nightshift" is a fun, stabby tune based on a spiraling chord progression. It loops every three-and-a-half bars, just to make life harder for DJs. A real nice warm groover. The remix for "Sandpaper" is a true family affair. Sound Support is the all new project by Lars Dales better known as 1/2 of Detroit Swindle and Lorenz himself. They've just released their debut EP on Prins Thomas Internasjonal label in October 2020, here they take Jamie's vocal into a more dramatic and electronic territory touching electro grounds. To close things out we also added an instrumental on the vinyl and radio mix on the digital version of this new EP. DIRTER PROMOTIONS (UK)

PRICE: $22.00 CAT #: FARO 122X-LP FILE UNDER: WORLD VEROCAI,ARTHUR Encore LP 2020 repress. Heavyweight vinyl. Far Out Recordings present the ten-year anniversary of Arthur Verocai's Encore, originally released in 2007. Encore features 11 original compositions from Arthur Verocai with guest musicians including Azymuth, Ivan Lins, and a nine-piece string section. The highly anticipated follow-up to Arthur's eponymous debut album from 1972, Encore saw Arthur joining the dots over 35 years to create a modern classic of Brazilian music that, like his debut, combines Brazilian influences with his take on American soul and cinematic experimentation, and shows that Arthur's sound is as poignant as it ever was. In the mid-2000s, following on from Marcos Valle, Joyce, and of course Azymuth, Arthur Verocai joined the long-line of Brazilian musicians whose music was to be introduced to a whole new legion of fans by Far Out Recordings. The story of Encore begins with Joe Davis, Far Out Recordings' head honcho who stumbled upon Arthur's debut in a dusty record store in downtown Rio in the late '80s. At the time of its release in 1972, critics panned Arthur's debut and both the album and artist subsequently vanished into obscurity. Fast forward to winter 2004 and Joe's at the studio of Far Out Recording artists Harmonic 313 -- aka production duo Mark "Troubleman" Pritchard and Dave Brinkworth -- playing them some of his favorite Brazilian albums. Dave recalls the moment Joe put on Arthur's debut, "As soon as the needle hit the record and we heard the fantastic arrangements, songs and sounds, Arthur completely blew our minds." Three months later and Dave was in Brazil with Arthur Verocai, and the plans for what was to become Encore were being laid down. Produced by Dave, Encore sees Arthur on incredible form, the 35 plus years between the recording of his debut and this the follow-up just melting away as Arthur picked up the (conductor's) baton once again to create 11 epic tracks of stirring samba-soul and experimental cinematic movements that sees him creating a record to rival his debut. FROM OUR MINDS (CANADA)

PRICE: $16.50 CAT #: FOM 001EP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC HAWTIN, RICHIETime Warps EP 12" Richie Hawtin releases Time Warps EP, his first dancefloor focused EP since Minus Orange in 1999. This is the first release on a new extension of Hawtin's iconic Plus 8 label, From Our Minds. Few can match Richie Hawtin's contribution to techno over the last three decades. A restless pioneer, the Canadian artist's importance as a producer, which includes music made under aliases like Plastikman and F.U.S.E, is matched by his influence as a curator for iconic labels like M_nus, Plus 8, and Probe. Now, through a pair of brand new, long-form club tracks, recorded in lockdown and boasting a combined length of over 30 minutes, "Time Warps" channels the blurred, stretched perception of time that has been so characteristic of life in 2020. With constantly evolving, precision engineered loops delivered at a pulse-raising tempo, patient pacing and a seamless yet unpredictable progression, the title track is a lesson in building the kind of mesmeric dancefloor moments synonymous with the producer's name. The alternative mix "Time Stands Still" takes a radically different approach, with stretches of ominous ambience that manage to slowly dial up rather than suppress the tension, deferring release until the perfect moment. A statement of intent on a new imprint, and a long-awaited return. GET ON DOWN

PRICE: $32.00 CAT #: GET 51339LP FILE UNDER: JAZZ MINGUS,CHARLES Mingus Ah Um Redux 2LP "Double LP housed in a gatefold jacket. Mingus Ah Um, the artist's 1959 debut for Columbia is one of the most consequential albums in jazz or any other genre. The release is part of the Library of Congress National Recording Registry and has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat', 'Boogie Stomp Shuffle', 'Open Letter To The Duke'... the release is packed with classics and is a best-selling release to this day. For Record Store Day 2020 Get On Down presents Ah Um Redux, the full Ah Um record as you know and love it with a second LP featuring alternate takes from the session previously unreleased on vinyl." PRICE: $10.00 CAT #: GY11 001CD FILE UNDER: ROCK MONTGOMERY, ROY Island Of Lost Souls CD "Island Of Lost Souls is the first of four new albums by Roy Montgomery coming out in 2021 to commemorate Montgomery's forty years in music. His debut release was also Flying Nun's first, the Pin Group 7-inch from 1981. Roy Montgomery, a pioneer of the NZ underground, believes there is always new sonic terrain to investigate. His latest album for Grapefruit marks forty years of rigorous exploration in which he's managed to navigate disparate genres, scenes, and atmospheres, always at the forefront of experimental independent music. Island Of Lost Souls follows his acclaimed 2018 LP Suffuse -- novel departure in which he consigned all vocal duties to ambient/experimental peers Liz Harris (of Grouper), Julianna Barwick, Purple Pilgrims, Haley Fohr (of Circuit des Yeux), Katie von Schleicher, and She Keeps Bees. But the veteran evolves again. On this release Montgomery creates resounding, aerial compositions for guitar. Where some might be inclined to relax and lean into their legacy at this stage in a sprawling career, Montgomery's new music continues to seek and challenge, moving like the eye of a storm. This latest album cries out like a chorus, though there are no vocals on the record. Its tracklist instead builds upon the lonesome and polyphonic dimensions of guitar in order to express universal feelings of communion and isolation, resisting conclusion but never resorting to fatalism. Life is all about navigating these contradictions and everyone is with Montgomery on this island whether they'd like to admit it or not. Here, the artist has created a work of wisdom and grit, a searing beauty, a new masterpiece for an uncertain and restless time."

PRICE: $16.00 CAT #: GBVI 101CD FILE UNDER: ROCK GUIDED BYVOICES Styles We Paid For CD "Styles We Paid For is Guided By Voices' third album of 2020 and it stands as a testament to this Year In Isolation, reflecting these dark days through Robert Pollard's prism, with the band sounding as confident and authoritative as ever. The fifteen tracks were recorded remotely during quarantine from five states (Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Tennessee) to comprise GBV's ninth album since 2017. Pollard's searing vocals hold center stage, with endless melodic invention and impeccable phrasing. The massively crescendoing opening track 'Megaphone Riley' seems to be inspired by a diabolical politician-in-chief, and like an indie-rock Nostradamus, presciently highlights the 'Jumbo Virus', while in the final couplet of the album closer 'When Growing Was Simple' Pollard urges 'Don't drink and drive / stay at home and eat'. Other album highlights include Big Rock standouts like the incredibly hooky 'Mr. Child' with the band in full arena rock power swing, while the titular protagonist is mentioned by name no less than sixteen times; the touching beauty and lyrical relevance of 'Stops' and the majestically elegant 'In Calculus Stratagem', a bubbly pop rock joyride in 'Crash at Lake Placebo'; the subtle current-day technological observations of 'They Don't Play The Drums Anymore' and the sleek 'Electronic Windows To Nowhere' (written by a man who owns neither a smart phone or a computer). It's notably heavy in it's worldliness, lyrical content, texture, and approach -- and rides out like a cinematic journey of the bizarro world one find oneself in. While other bands have been napping, GBV have achieved their second consecutive hat-trick (three albums per annum), and have further cemented their status as rock legends for achieving more in this bleak year then most bands do across their entire careers."

PRICE: $12.50 CAT #: ICR 019CD FILE UNDER: WORLD MAN& KOJIRO UMEZAKI, WUFlow CD "At The Huntington, not far from downtown Los Angeles, is the spectacular ???/Liu Fang Yuan, a 15-acre classical-style garden, inspired by those in Suzhou, China. In 2019, The Huntington commissioned visual artist ???/Tang Qingnian to create a video installation to commemorate the garden's latest phase of expansion. The 40-minute video celebrates scenes from all four seasons at the garden, plus its subtly ever-present landscaping of bamboo. With contrasts of richness in sound color between the instruments, this album features original solo and duo works by ??/Wu Man (??/pipa) and ?????/Kojiro Umezaki (??/shakuhachi). Initially composed to partner Tang Qingnian's video, the works are re-produced here as an album of music under the title ??/Flow. The hope is to share a musical experience of the garden and its changes through each year." IN THE RED

PRICE: $20.00 CAT #: ITR 359EP FILE UNDER: ROCK KID CONGO& THE PINK MONKEY BIRDSSwing From The Sean DeLear 12" "Swing From The Sean DeLear is the new four song 12-inch by Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds on In The Red Records. It celebrates a dreamlike bridge between life and memory. Recorded and mixed with Jim Waters (Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Sonic Youth, etc.) at Waterworks Recording in Tucson AZ, the track 'Sean DeLear' is a tribute to the late, magical, and ubiquitous Los Angeles underground institution named Sean DeLear. This rocking song uses the metaphor of those passed on as swinging from a chandelier, a festive image everyone hopes is true! Side two of this 12-inch is a fourteen-minute psych, Chicanogroove titled 'He Walked In.' The text is based on a visceral fever dream Kid had about his friend and Gun Club bandmate Jeffrey Lee Pierce, who passed away in 1996. Leading the listener back to the theme of feelings sustained between life and memory, the song dreams on as the band spreads their monkey bird wings, featuring Mark Cisneros on flute, and guest tambourine-queen Cesar Padilla -- lost in music but found in sound. In such uncertain times, one thing is most certain -- Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds will always bring the party... and the other world." INTERNASJONAL (NORWAY)

PRICE: $20.00 CAT #: INT 008LP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC BJORK, HARALDHall Om Mig LP "Since first hearing Harald's Sabor Latino in 2016, I've been a huge fan of his freeform psychedelic take on electronica. Roughly a year ago he sent me a shedload of music giving me free reins to pick and rework everything as I pleased. The result is this 'album' consisting of four handpicked tracks on vinyl and a full album download with ten more tracks (14 in total) covering more or less all bases from ambient Buchla experiments to banging techno." --Prins Thomas, October 2020 KUSTOMIZED

PRICE: $16.00 CAT #: KUS 004CD FILE UNDER: ROCK CRUCIFIX Dehumanization CD "Dehumanization is the only full-length album from the band Crucifix. Recorded in 1983, it is considered a classic American hardcore album and a landmark of anarcho-punk. Dehumanization delivers a raging critique of war, violence, displacement, and the decimation of human rights and human dignity -- themes at once global in scope and also completely endemic to Reagan-era America. The intensity of this message is matched only by the intensity of the sound: a heavy minimalist construction built on brutal guitar riffs, low-end distortion, hardcore fury and teenage speed. It is an album of pure raw power, a hot blast of personal and political outrage and musical adrenaline. Fusing California hardcore with metal and second wave British anarcho-punk, Crucifix carved out their own highly distinctive wall of sound on this release. Ignoring the rules of punk purism in favor of a well-produced huge guitar sound, the album preceded much of the hardcore metal crossover of the mid-80s and played an influential but often unacknowledged role in the punk and metal subgenres that followed. 'Annihilation,' the album's opening track, has become iconic. Quoted often, it's been sampled by Orbital and covered by A Perfect Circle and Sepultura. The original vinyl version of Dehumanization was released on the Crass Records offshoot label Corpus Christi in the UK, and has been out of print since the 1980s. This new Kustomized rerelease has been carefully remastered from an original vinyl source and adheres closely to the audio quality of the original. In addition, the six-panel foldout poster sleeve has been reproduced in its entirety. Taken together, the words, music and graphics of Dehumanization form a complete work and a resonant and enduring document of the period."

PRICE: $24.00 CAT #: LION 161LP FILE UNDER: ROCK BLANC-FRANCARD, DOMINIQUEAilleurs LP "Dominique Blanc-Francard's Ailleurs is trippy and weird... and yet... the songs are catchy and the album rocks out. Fuzzy guitar, chunky drums, weird effects, a thick mix of layers of sound -- all tasty ingredients. Pink Floyd meets T-Rex? It's a terrific recipe, which surely must describe other albums? Even so, we can't think of another album that sounds quite like Ailleurs. Without realizing it, you've probably already listened to Dominique Blanc-Francard's work -- as a sound engineer. DBF (as his intimate friends call him), worked from 1970 to 1973 at the mythical Chateau d'Hérouville studio under the leadership of Michel Magne, the legendary composer of soundtracks such as Les Tontons Flingueurs, Fantômas, and Angélique. The studio was the famous Honky Château of Elton John, a place where Dominique Blanc-Francard participated in recordings by Pink Floyd, David Bowie, T. Rex, Elton John, and Cat Stevens Pink Floyd. You can also find DBF's involvement on records by Magma, C?ur Magique, Gong, Catharsis, Ergo Sum, Zoo, Markusfeld, Axis and the compilation Puissance 13+2 (Power 13 + 2), recently reissued in all its glory by one of your favorite labels (we hope), Lion Productions. Here, DBF was able to collaborate with famous producers such as Paul Samwell-Smith, Gus Dudgeon, and Tony Visconti. Since then, DBF has worked with all the French artistic upper-crust: Jacques Dutronc, Françoise Hardy, Jane Birkin and others. But in 1972, it was Pink Floyd and King Crimson and Led Zeppelin who were on DBF's mind. DBF: 'In April 1972, at the time we recorded this album, French pop was stuck between Claude François, Joe Dassin, Sheila and Mike Bran -- in other words, music with very little creativity. I was 28 already and wanted to show what I could do.' Pink Floyd was a big influence on this LP... as well as King Crimson and Led Zeppelin. 'I remember the tremendous shock I had when I first heard King Crimson's '21st Century Schizoid Man,' with its distorted voices. When I listened to the Crimson album, I saw on its cover that it was recorded in four days. I thought, 'there's no reason not to be able to do the same.'" With Ailleurs released in 1972 on Riviera, a subdivision of Barclay, DBF offered to a world that quite frankly wasn't looking for or expecting it, a wonderful LP -- an album as unclassifiable as it is enjoyable (it is both). The Barclay promotions department was thrilled and asked DBF to perform on television. He had no wish to sing in front of people. He called it a day as a performer, just like that." Includes eight-page color booklet. LONDON RECORDS (FRANCE)

PRICE: $17.00 CAT #: LMS 5521360 FILE UNDER: ROCK FINEYOUNG CANNIBALSFine Young Cannibals (Remastered) 2CD Fine Young Cannibals' first, eponymous album, originally released in 1985, remastered for the very first time with Roland Gift's involvement. Includes the hits "Johnny Come Home", "Suspicious Minds". Includes 29 bonus rare/unreleased tracks -- B sides, live renditions including BBC session recorded with John Peel and Janice Long, and remixes with versions by Mousse T Cocktail, Derrick Carter, and Mark Moore. Double-CD version comes in six-page digipack; includes 12-page booklet."When Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger split from the rest of the English Beat to form General Public, Andy Cox and Dave Steele originally advertised on MTV for a new lead singer for the Beat. When that didn't pan out (although it did work for Wall of Voodoo), Cox and Steele hooked up with the unique and soulful singer Roland Gift and formed the Fine Young Cannibals. Though the trio first hit the mass U.S. consciousness with 1989's electronic dance-pop The Raw and the Cooked, their 1985 debut was a soul-jazz pop charmer that's more low-key but every bit as entertaining. Along the lines of early Everything But the Girl (the two groups share a producer, Robin Millar) with a heavier Motown influence, the songs on Fine Young Cannibals are uniformly strong. The singles 'Johnny Come Home' (a plea to a runaway that sounds like the Beat's ska stripped down to its tense and obsessive essentials) and 'Blue' (one of the more oblique and successful anti-Margaret Thatcher tracks of its era) are terrific, but album tracks like the casually devastating 'Funny How Love Is' and the manic 'Like a Stranger' (which incongruously ends with a female chorus shrieking 'You've been too long in an institution!' repeatedly while Gift tries out his Otis Redding impression) are even better. The album's highlight, though, is a reworking of 'Suspicious Minds' (with scarifying backing vocals by Jimmy Somerville) that, while it doesn't replace Elvis' version, certainly takes the song into an interesting new direction. Although often overlooked, especially in the U.S., in the wake of their massively successful follow-up, Fine Young Cannibals is a powerful and satisfying debut." --Stewart Mason, AllMusic

PRICE: $17.00 CAT #: LMS 5521362 FILE UNDER: ROCK FINEYOUNG CANNIBALSThe Raw and The Cooked (Remastered) 2CD The second album by the Fine Young Cannibals, The Raw and The Cooked, original released in 1989. Remastered for the very first time with Roland Gift's involvement. Fine Young Cannibals had talent to burn -- guitarist Andy Cox and multi-instrumentalist David Steele were veterans of the English Beat, and front man Roland Gift was a vocalist as distinctive as Sam Cooke or Al Green -- and 1989's The Raw and The Cooked shows the UK trio going out in style. The second and final FYC studio album neatly balances such retro-soul numbers as "Good Thing" and such Prince-influenced dance cuts as "She Drives Me Crazy." Both of those tracks became No.1 hits, and the remaining songs (all original except for a convincing cover of Buzzcocks' "Ever Fallen In Love") are also single-worthy. A double-Platinum smash, The Raw and The Cooked remains among the most listenable albums of the 1980s. Includes the hits "She Drives Me Crazy", "Good Thing", "I'm Not The Man I Used To Be". Features 22 bonus rare/unreleased tracks -- B sides, and also remixes by David Z, Ploeg Club, Dimitri From Paris Seth Troxler, Prince Paul, Youth, and Arthur Baker. Double-CD version comes in six-page digipack; includes 12-page booklet. MADE IN GERMANY (GERMANY)

PRICE: $24.00 CAT #: MIG 2392CD FILE UNDER: ROCK RENBOURNGROUP, JOHNA Maid In Bremen (Live At Roemer, Bremen Feb. 14th 1978) CD "In 1967 the British guitarist and songwriter John Renbourn together with his friend Bert Jansch founded the British folk rock band Pentangle. Like Jansch, Renbourn was considered an outstanding representative of the British 'Folk Baroque' and fingerpicking playing technique. Since 1968 Renbourn successfully recorded several albums with Pentangle for the well-known UK folk/folk rock label Transatlantic. After the release of the album Solomon's Seal in 1973, the band members went separate ways. From then on Bert Jansch and John Renbourn realized solo plans. Albums like The Lady And The Unicorn and The Hermit by John Renbourn are still considered milestones today of British folk rock. In 1977 John founded the John Renbourn Group, recorded two studio albums and a live album with them and was busy touring again around the world. A 1978 live-recording by Radio Bremen from the Roemer in Bremen/Germany also bears witness to these live activities. Again, with John on stage: the former Pentangle singer Jaqui McShee. Multi-instrumentalist Tony Roberts, the well-known Indian tabla player Keshav Sathe (among others: John Mayer, Julie Felix) and the American cellist Sandy Spencer (member of the French based Prog. Folk rock band Mormos, later also with the well-known Trevor Watts String Ensemble) completed the line-up of the John Renbourn Group in Bremen that night. Jacqui McShee, who also wrote the liner notes for the booklet to this album, still remembers the Bremen concert: 'To my knowledge this is the only recording of Sandy with the group, she left soon afterwards to return to America.' And goes on: 'I have been chatting to Tony recently (we laughed a lot) and of course we both miss John and Kesh, but we have these wonderful recordings and the albums that we made and we have a sense of pride in the music we played together.'" PRICE: $95.00 CAT #: MFG 043LP FILE UNDER: JAZZ BROTHER AHDivine Music 5LP BOX 2021 restock; five LP box set version. "Following the reissues of Brother Ah's three studio albums in 2016, Manufactured Recordings is proud to present Divine Music, a collection of three unreleased albums from this jazz visionary: The Sea (1978), Mediation (1981), and Searching (1985). Moving from rich spiritual jazz to more meditative ambience, Divine Music further explores Brother Ah's unique sound and musical vision. Released as a 5xLP box set, Divine Music includes an extensive interview with Brother Ah by Pitchfork and Resident Advisor contributor Andy Beta. Recommended for fans of Laraaji, Alice Coltrane, Terry Riley, Brian Eno, Popul Vuh, and the recent new age renaissance. The renowned French horn player known as Brother Ah (aka Robert Northern) is one of the most prolific and respected musicians in the history of jazz music, with a recorded output spanning more than 40 years. Born in 1934 and raised in the south Bronx, Brother Ah was playing jazz trumpet as early as fifteen years of age. Following a classical French horn education at Austria's Vienna State Academy, he emerged in the late '50s and established himself as a skilled and consistent session musician, playing with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the Radio City Music Hall Orchestra, and numerous Broadway theater orchestras. Brother Ah recorded well into the '60s with some of the most illustrious names in the genre, including Donald Byrd, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, Gil Evans and, perhaps most influentially, Sun Ra. In 1969, Ah formed his own group, The Musical Sound Awareness Ensemble, and released several works under his own name from 1974 onward. In the late '60s, his interest in non-western music developed, and his '70s and '80s recordings, incorporated elements of Eastern and 'Third World' music, fusing them with jazz structures." PRICE: $18.00 CAT #: NPLUS 001CD FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC VALESE, SAELEIVIC CD NOTON signs Italian-born, Berlin-based sound-artist and producer Saele Valese. In IVIC, his debut album, Saele Valese, distills hauntological noise, droning tonal experiments, and minimalist rhythms into a series of electro-acoustic-wave ventures written over five years in Berlin, Saas-Fee, and Thun. Drawing influences from the psychoacoustic properties of the live album format, IVIC's 11 tracks were mixed and recorded live on DAT cassettes and through DAW experimentation, without the possibility to revise the final recordings. Valese adopted this approach to conceptually propose reconciliations between the irreversibility of the past, and acceptance of its residuals in the present. The track titles themselves follow this pathos, citing the works of the American photographer Francesca Woodman and the poet Sylvia Plath. The inclusion of passages incorporating live sonics and throes of industrialisms, contributes to the images of gravity, intimacy, and spatiality that the music presented here invokes. In keeping with this imagery, the music possesses a dilated, shuffling rhythmic base, much like the firm traversal of a tanker against a storm of jangling components, and still moments of gloomy sonics alternating with more ravenous upheavals of power electronics. If the track divisions do not pass by unheeded, they are consistently assembled to sonically accompany the emotional charges and momentum of an imaginary cinematic experience; the beats caves in for instants of relief, only to recoil in a cognate tempo but rearranged structurally. In another gesture of cogitated stride, the portentous waves of the record progressively rage into a turmoil in its third quarter during "Horse The Color Of Rust". The album reaches its closure fluctuating through microtonal oscillations to slowly eclipse into silence.

For years, the album made the rounds in underground hip-hop circles (being sampled along the way by the likes of Large Professor, J-Live, Madlib, and Black Eyed Peas), trading hands for ridiculous sums on the second-hand market -- even after it saw a reissue on Now Again as part of the Acting, Thinking, Feeling 6xLP boxset which gathered other recently discovered, previously unreleased material from the band's career. Now, ...Discovers Hoagy Carmichael's Music Shop is available on vinyl for the very first time since its initial 1970 release in a deluxe 3-LP release including 56-page booklet with never before seen photos, extensive liner notes by Egon of Now Again Records with commentary by AJP founder Ahmad Jamal and annotation and an interview with Monty Stark, the band's frontman."

Magical, mystical, Afrocentric, progressive -- words that could be used to describe any number of musical compositions by Sun Ra or his cosmic brothers and sisters, from John to Alice Coltrane, early '70s projects on record labels like Detroit's Tribe or Houston's Lightin' or the interests of one Washington, DC native named Jimmy Gray that centered under one, perfect moniker: Black Fire. Gray spent nearly three decades pushing boundaries as a Black American promoter, distributor and, finally, record label owner. Together with Juju's leader James 'Plunky Nkabinde' Branch, Gray oversaw sixteen releases on Black Fire Records between 1975 and 1996. These are the definitive reissues of five of the label's key titles; all were lacquered -- most directly from master tape -- by legendary Los Angeles mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. With this set, Juju and Black Fire's story burns forth into its fifth decade, its message not tempered, its sound pure. It's cycle, once again, complete. PRICE: $25.00 CAT #: QUI 002LP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC CABARET DU CIELThe Breath of Infinity LP Following the stellar trip through Woo's Arcturian Corridor (2020), Quindi Records continues to explore intimate, inviting sounds with an experimental bent by facilitating the return of overlooked Italian duo, Cabaret du Ciel. Initially formed in 1986, Cabaret du Ciel's debut album Skies In The Mirror was a low-key and extremely rare cassette release of spellbinding electro-acoustic ambient music created by Gian Luigi Morosin and Andrea Desiderà. A reissue on Hybride Sentimento in 2018 brought renewed attention to the startling music contained within this unique project. The Breath Of Infinity is an album comprised of new works recorded over the past year, either as new pieces or reworked from old ideas with the assistance of Giorgio Ricci. Morosin and Desiderà's natural instincts as multi-instrumentalists shine through across the record as they did on Skies In The Mirror, although these tracks were in fact composed as raw live takes using electronic workstations (with a little additional fretless bass provided by a close friend Giampaolo Diacci on "Different Suns" and "Climatic Variations"). There is a crisp, digital timbre to the worlds Cabaret du Ciel shape out on The Breath Of Infinity -- utopian pastures with an air of optimism similarly expressed in the first waves of ambient electronica. Folk traditions exert a guiding influence on the sparkling, ethereal melodies, and full-frequency harmonization, but this is music enamored with timeless plateaus rather than hackneyed interpretations of the past, present or future. It's also an album of variety. "Different Suns" tumbles with a pastoral, elemental earthiness thanks to the interwoven rhythmic murmuring of percussion and live bass, while "Lakota" pivots in sharply rendered bio-mechanical formations. There's a widescreen bombast to "Theatre Azure" which calls to mind mid-90s US electronica, while "Meredith" reclines in a blissful bath of plush '80s FM synthesis. "Sunset Parade March" has a distinct sense of propulsion thanks to its overdriven, broken techno rhythm and "Highlands" skips with an infectious energy despite not using any formal kind of percussion, but even in these more kinetic moments a preference for mellow musicality maintains the dreamlike mood. Consider The Breath Of Infinity like an archipelago, where each track functions as its own distinct island of ideas while being intrinsically interconnected to the others. In a similar fashion to acts such as Ultramarine, Cabaret du Ciel emphasize the musicality in their electronic music, shaping out an evocative, imaginative environment to idly glide through or attentively explore. SARAH MARYMe And Ennui Are Friends, Baby CD "Me And Ennui Are Friends, Baby is the latest full-length from New Zealand-born, Melbourne-based singer-songwriter, Sarah Mary Chadwick, whose brutally honest songwriting has cast her contrary to the gentleness of most current music. Comprised entirely of minimal solo piano arrangements, the album is despondently clear-eyed and smirkingly self-deprecating, completing a trilogy of records that started with The Queen Who Stole The Sky recorded on Melbourne Town Hall's grand organ, and her only outing to date featuring a full band, Please Daddy. Each record has followed Chadwick's internal processing after a traumatic event, with Chadwick's zeal for psychoanalysis front and center. On Ennui, Chadwick presents an exacting intensity with her choice to pare back to piano and vocals. It's in this stark setting that she focuses on the attempt she made on her life in 2019. The methods Chadwick employed here contrast those of her previous full-band record, which thrust her into a very different world of rehearsal, planning, restraint and control as a functional tool. The result, 2020's critically acclaimed Please Daddy, was her most aching and engaging achievement to date: 'a raw, often unnerving experience,' which 'delivers compelling and uplifting catharsis' (Mojo). Recording Ennui shortly after those sessions, Chadwick concludes her trilogy by returning to the most immediate compositional process she can muster, doing it alone, with less between her and the microphone than ever before. Joined by long time production collaborators, Me And Ennui was mastered by David Walker at Stepford Audio and mixed and recorded by Geoff O'Connor at Vanity Lair -- both expertly bringing scale, subtlety and intangible ascendance to this recording."

PRICE: $15.00 CAT #: EZRDR 125CD FILE UNDER: ROCK HERE LIESMAN RitualDivination CD Four albums in, the convenient and generalized catchphrase for Here Lies Man's erudite sound -- if Black Sabbath played Afrobeat -- might seem a little played out. But Ritual Divination is perhaps the best rendering of the idea so far. Particularly on the Sabbath side of the equation: The guitars are heavier and more blues-based than before, but the ancient rhythmic formula of the clave remains a constant. 'Musically it's an opening up more to traditional rock elements,' says vocalist / guitarist / cofounder Marcos Garcia, who also plays guitar in Antibalas. 'It's always been our intention to explore. And, as we travelled deeper into this musical landscape, new features revealed themselves.' The L.A. based band comprised of Antibalas members have toured relentlessly following their breakout 2017 self-titled debut. Their second album, You Will Know Nothing and an EP, Animal Noises, both followed in 2018. Third album No Ground To Walk Upon emerged in August 2019. All of them were crafted by Garcia and cofounder / drummer Geoff Mann (former Antibalas drummer and son of jazz musician Herbie Mann) in their L.A. studio between tours. Ritual Divination is their first album recorded as the full four-piece band, including bassist JP Maramba and keyboardist Doug Organ. This album continues with an ongoing concept of the band playing the soundtrack to an imaginary movie, with each song being a scene. Musically and sonically, the album is also self-reflexive. 'On this album the feel changes within a song,' Garcia says. 'Whereas before each song was meant to induce a trancelike state, now more of the songs have their own arc built in. We're very conscious of how the rhythms service the riffs,' Garcia continues. 'Tony Iommi's (Black Sabbath) innovation was to make the riff the organizing principle of a song. We are taking that same approach but employing a different organizing principle: For Iommi it was the blues, for us it comes directly from Africa.'" ROGUEART (FRANCE)

Paul Dunmall (tenor saxophone), Matthew Shipp (piano), Joe Morris (double bass), Gerald Cleaver (drums)"

PRICE: $16.00 CAT #: ROG 108CD FILE UNDER: JAZZ SHIPP &EVAN PARKER, MATTHEWLeonine Aspects CD "At the antipodes of battles, the music of this duo is both delicate and precise. Evan Parker (tenor & soprano saxophones), Matthew Shipp (piano)." SOUS MUSIC (GERMANY)

PRICE: $15.50 CAT #: SOUS 018EP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC SUBRADEONBreaking Down Borders 12" "I have been in love with the Detroit sound of techno since forever, so when I discovered Subradeon, I was immediately struck by the soul and energy of their music. I have been lucky enough to get to know Giuseppe and Salvatore over the last year and so it was always a dream for me to have them release a record together on Sous. Now this is happening, I couldn't be more excited. They have made three spectacularly good tracks that I know will last forever in my heart, and hopefully in yours too" opens Anja. Sous has been drip feeding us top line releases all year long, despite the world coming to a standstill, Anja believes that continuing to release music is important to keep spirits high. She has been showcasing some of the newer talent from around the globe alongside some household names including Marcus Suckut, Fort Romeau, and Mella Dee to the last release from Italian duo, Reform. Hailed as the new school of the techno scene, Subradeon might have grown up in the Neapolitan underground scene, but their sound has become a melting pot of influences from their current home town of Berlin and the duo's self-confessed spiritual home of Detroit. Giuseppe Salone and Salvatore Lannotta deliver their debut release Breaking Down Borders on Sous, compromising of their characteristic raw soul, profound meaning and energetic purpose. This package includes a remix from Techno pioneer Stephen Brown (Djax Records, Transmat, Music Man). TELEPHONE EXPLOSION (CANADA)

PRICE: $23.00 CAT #: TER 074LP FILE UNDER: ROCK BADGEEPOQUE ENSEMBLEFuture, Past & Present LP "Barely a season passed in 2019 between the release of Badge Époque Ensemble's self-titled debut album, and its follow up, the disco-sleeved 12" Nature, Man & Woman. Now, three months on from the release of the group's acclaimed sophomore album Self Help, we find them repeating the trick with a surprise fourth title on Telephone Explosion Records, the fittingly titled Future, Past & Present. A compilation of sorts, the album collects instrumental, alternate mix versions of all BÉE songs which originally featured guest vocalists. In practice this results in a pseudo-greatest-hits survey of the Ensemble's catalogue to-date, touching on highlights from all three releases while emphasizing the group's strength as versatile mood-conjurors. Where these songs once featured vocal heavyweights like Meg Remy, Jennifer Castle, James Baley and Dorothea Paas, they are now strung together instrumentally in a sequence which represents the purest distillation of BÉE's collective musical chemistry to date. Crowning this delectably listenable platter is an exclusive, nearly eight-minute composition; title track 'Future, Past & Present'. A spiritual sequel to 'Nature, Man & Woman', both tracks cook at a decidedly 'luded tempo as pressurized atmospheres swing from pleasantly meditative to sinisterly growling. On 'Future, Past & Present' bandleader Maximilian 'Twig' Turnbull returns to the approach of the earlier track, chopping drum and percussion stems from previously released BÉE works, refashioning structures for bold new compositions. This approach is an interesting contrast from the reputation BÉE has cultivated for their LP compositions which are cut live off the floor, unadorned with little to no intervention. It suggests the possibility of an expanding sonic universe for the collective, as these collaged compositions shade closer to a more explicitly hip-hop oriented pallet mostly hinted at elsewhere in the catalogue. Fittingly, the rest of the runtime plays like a set from a well-appointed hip-hop producer's crate; flattening the distances between proto-prog slap, sensuous soul flute and Brazilian AOR influenced pockets into a cohesive whole. While the band's burgeoning reputation for dusted fidelity grooves is well observed, it is formed on the basis of a contemporary chemistry and approach. Future, Past & Present is a summation of that approach to date, and well worth crating."

TRUNK (UK)

PRICE: $27.50 CAT #: JBH 079LP FILE UNDER: SOUNDTRACK BUDD, ROYThe Internecine Project LP 2021 restock. Unreleased masterpiece by Roy Budd, the master of British 1970s scores. Composed and recorded in 1974, The Internecine Project is a truly classic Roy Budd score, released here and now on vinyl (and on any format) for the very first time. And it's worth buying just for the totally sublime track called "Mr Easy". Coming from the peak Roy Budd period -- post Get Carter (1971) and pre Diamonds (1976) -- this score neatly bridges the two with Carter-style hypnotic, jazz-driven cues and superb Diamonds-style drama. The film itself was a slick British thriller directed by Ken Hughes, set in a gray, gloomy London and based around espionage and murder. The plot is simple; former spy Robert Elliot (the ice cool James Coburn -- with interesting facial hair and equally as interesting wardrobe) is given a big government job. In order to cut all questionable ties and clean up his rather grubby past he devises a plan in which all of his dodgy associates unwittingly kill each other on the same night -- and in alphabetical order. The film's unusual and often misspelt name comes from the word internecine -- the definition of which is conflict within a group. Full color sleeve; includes sleeve notes. W.25TH

PRICE: $29.00 CAT #: W25 014LP FILE UNDER: ELECTRONIC RUSSOM, GAVILAN RAYNASecret Passage 2LP "Growing up in deindustrialized Providence, Rhode Island of the 1970s and 1980s provided NYC-based composer and interdisciplinary artist Gavilán Rayna Russom access to derelict subterranean spaces including the mile-long East Side Rail Tunnel. The tunnel's reverberant darkness would produce distinctive sensory effects and host Russom's formative experiences of interpersonal connectedness, liminality, transgender identity, anti-capitalist desire and state repression. Secret Passage -- an absorbing, memoiristic work by Russom, whose synthesis-based practice fuses information and expression into organic wholes -- draws on memories of 'unsupervised autonomous zones where I tasted the possibilities of a world without surveillance,' as she writes in the liner notes. Inspired by 'this beautifully neglected place,' the music resounds with ghostlike echoes and raw pulsations. Russom utilizes synthesizers, field recordings and voice to illustrate hallucinatory revelations of the city's lightless undercarriage. Each track of Secret Passage, originally released as a limited cassette on Voluminous Arts, is dedicated to a friend -- entwining personal liberation with collective discovery. The East Side Rail Tunnel has been inaccessible since the 1990s, the result of urban development and gentrification." new releases are also viewable at https://www.forcedexposure.com/new/newindx.html Forced Exposure, 60 Lowell St, Arlington, MA, 02476, United States, www.forcedexposure.com
