Branches

From the Chairman....Chris Hoff

Welcome to the April edition of Branches. Staff, theBoard, committees and many volunteers have beenquite busy since the previous Branches in March. We do expect to publish another edition of Branchesin early May that would be exclusively in preparationfor the membership meeting planned for May 25,2016.

StaffingWe have had some changes to the educationalassistants over the past month or so. We welcomeStephanie Geertsema who is filling in for AngVanSponsen while she takes some personal leave. We thank Ang for her continued committment tostudent growth over the years. Next month we willalso have to say farewell to Paige Vanderhorst asshe leaves on maternity in mid-May. We are gratefulfor applicants to replace her and should be able toshare an announcement in the near future. It is ourprayer that God will bless Ang and Paige in theirindividual circumstances.

In our last issue there was a reference to teachingassignments in primary grades. With regards to theintermediate teaching assignments, we expect MissNobel and Miss Harink to be our seventh gradeteachers, Mr. Scholtens and Mr. Kanis to beresponsible for our sixth graders, and Mrs.VanSpronsen and Mrs. VanRhee will shareresponsibility for our fifth grade class. Fourth graderswill be taught by Miss Vanderhoek. There will also bea level of fluidity evident as Miss Harink looksforward to teaching French in the all the grade 6 and7 classes. We have yet to finalize a few things suchas educational assistants, but should have thissorted out in May. Other General Miscellaneous News

In many respects, this has been a fairly routineBoard year - which is in itself unusual. Recent pastBoard members may be surprised to learn that mostmeetings end around (or sometimes before!) 10:00o'clock. • One of the reasons for this is that our interaction

with other schools in the valley is limited to somecombined policy work, and prospective changesto our bylaws pursuant to the new Societies Act. Neil Dykstra and Eric Vandergriendt (and well as

Will VanOene and Oliver Hansma) are leading acooperative effort for all the schools to make sureour constitution and bylaws conform to this newprovincial legislation. This includes a number ofseminars and, moving forward, meetings withother school society representatives. We canexpect to hear more about this as we approachour October 2016 membership meeting.

• By now, most will have heard that the fundraisingdrive for the expansion of John Calvin was verysuccessful. JCS hopes to begin preliminary worksuch as sprinklering of the existing building thissummer. Construction of the new edition couldbegin as early as this fall.

• To date, our neighbouring school to the west,William of Orange, has not secured a Principalfor next year (to replace the outgoing KentDykstra). They anticipate breaking up the dutiesof principal and teacher into part-time functions.

• When planning for our expansion a few yearsago, we noted that the upcoming school yearcould be a challenge due to the number of largeclasses. For next year we expect to split Grades1, 6, and 7. After the next school year the grade7 class will have graduated, leaving us with (whatwe expect as this time) just two split classes. Needless to say, having three split classes alsohas budget implications for this one year period. We are still working through this at this time andexpect to finalize our proposed budget at the MayBoard meeting. The proposed budget will be inthe next edition of Branches.

• The next edition of Branches should also haveinformation regarding a five year plan for CCESthat would cover off a number of items that wedid not tackle during the recent expansion, suchas the HVAC system. We do not have fundingfor all the anticipated work, so this plan will alsoinclude an element of fundraising.

• We welcome Mindert DeBoer to the EducationCommittee.

• The Reformed Curriculum DevelopmentCommittee (RCDC) remains active, and plans tocomplete an updated Health K-7 and InformationTechnology curriculum over the summer of 2016.

From the Principal....Otto Bouwman

• Our Covenant Canadian Reformed TeachersCollege is actively pursuing accreditation fromthe Ontario government. If successful, this wouldenable their students to also be accredited, andteach, in British Columbia. At this point, theCCRTC is cautiously optimistic. This is a goodmatter for prayer and voluntary donations to theCCRTC. We thank our local governor, JohnRoukema, for his work representing us with theCCRTC.

• Along the same lines, we continue to work with

the other valley schools and the CCRTCregarding a Certificate of Reformed Education, which would be a six course program forpractising elementary and secondary teacherspresently working in a reformed school.

And finally - we look forward to seeing you at theMothers Day Event planned for May 7, 2016!To all of you we wish a blessed Sunday!

The transition to warm weather has gone veryquickly this year. We praise God for his faithfulnessas it is evident in his care for us through the seasons. Our God has been faithful, and we thank and praisehim for it! As the students could express the otherevening at the Spring Program, we have manyreasons for gratitude!

Changing LandscapesWe live in a bewildering world - a world wheredistortions and confusions appear to be risingincredibly quickly. In our neighboring province ofAlberta, there has been a deliberate push to require"all schools to identify and implementevidence-based strategies that ensure the safety, belonging and full participation of all members of theschool community." While that may initially appear tobe fine, in fact it is nothing less than an assault ontraditional and Biblical values: all sexual orientationsare to be affirmed. Alberta's legislation is by nomeans unique.

In other provinces across Canada there arenumerous efforts to redefine fundamental matters.Manitoba's government released a document called"Safe and Caring Schools," which is intended to bea "support document" for public and fundedindependent schools as they develop "humandiversity" policies. Ontario's premier is a well-knownadvocate for pushing similar measures. In variousstates in the United States, there are huge rallies andcontroversies about the "need" for policies regardingwho may use which bathroom. A recent publicationfrom Australia which crossed my desk assured methat also there terms such as "Erase Bullying" werein fact agenda-driven. And even a well-known

Christian education publication recently had an entireissue dedicated to the "need" for Christian schools toaccommodate and affirm those who embracealternative lifestyles.

What we are witnessing is mass confusion regardingidentity. Our society's children are being taught to beconfused; it seems that everything is to bequestioned and all individuals need to discover theirown identity. Children need to discover their owntruth for themselves and then make sense out of lifeon their own. How good to know that in reality thereare so many identity questions for which the truth isabundantly clear!

For years, our schools and churches haveunashamedly ident i f ied themselves as"confessional." We have a confessional allegiance;the creeds and confessions, which are written out inour Book of Praise, summarize the truth of God'sWord and identify as heresy understandings whichare not in alignment with Scriptures. Theseconfessions help define our corporate identity. Theyalso help us understand and appreciate how we andour children have received a special identity throughthe sacrifice of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ;the consequence is that we and our children havealso received a high calling!

In a world which is rapidly changing, a world in whichthere is abundant identity confusion, we may restassured that our identity is safe in fact with our lovingFather. He made us and called us to be his own. Hegives us a task; at school that task is to help childrenunderstand their identity in Jesus Christ and developtheir individual talents to his glory. May each of us -

parents and teachers alike - work diligently andcalmly and deliberately with the children that the Lordhas put in our care. And continue to be thankful thatin British Columbia we may still operate with theactive support of our provincial government!

School MattersThere are numerous matters that could receiveattention in this column: another round of reportswere issued, student-led conferences were held, aspring break was enjoyed, preparations for the springprogram could be made and the performance couldbe enjoyed, and a great deal of regular learningcould take place. I continue to be impressed by the

atmosphere in this Christian school - there are somany reasons for gratitude! It is a pleasure towitness daily the professional dedication and love forstudent growth that is clear from the staff members.I am encouraged when I see students "owning" theirwork and doing what they can to continue to grow.I'm delighted to see all the effort and growth made bythose involved in "Special Education." I'm impressedby the dedication of those on the board and variouscommittees. Please keep up the momentum anddedication, parents, students, staff, and leaders -there are only nine weeks of school left for this year.

Wishing you all God's continued blessing and care.

At least twice per year, representatives from CredoElementary, Credo High, and William of OrangeChristian Schools gather together for a regional SpecialEducation Committee meeting. This group meetstogether in order to collaborate together and ensurethat the needs of all the students in our schools arebeing met - particularly including those students whohave specific learning challenges. In addition, theWilliam of Orange and Credo Elementary delegatesapprove the budget for the joint Special Needs programdelivered at CCES. Typically, at these meetings each school is given anopportunity to inform all attendees of newdevelopments and opportunities in their SpecialEducation departments. It is helpful to share bestpractices with each other, since resourcefulness isrequired in order to best meet the needs of all students. Some challenges could also be shared, includingdealing with lengthy wait times (over a year!!) for someforms of testing that are required to arrive atprofessional assessments of student needs. At thismeeting, a proposed "Educational Assessments andTherapy Protocol" was shared and evaluated. Themeeting concurred that it is helpful for the schools tohave specific protocols in place to ensure not only thatall available funding resources are accessed, but alsoso that everything is done "decently and in good order." There are numerous categories for different types oflearning needs; while some categories result insignificant funding for students, other categories do not.

Nonetheless, properly identifying categories of learningneeds is deemed helpful - not only so that teachers andassistants can more appropriately address theparticular learning needs of each student, but also sothat there is greater clarity for the government andassurance that independent schools are optimallyaddressing the needs of all students in their care.Proper coding also allows independent schools torefute the widely-held notion that independent schoolsdo not enrol students with learning difficulties. Finally, another topic covered in our meeting includedlooking at the finances involved in Special Educationdelivery. Since there is collaboration between theschools in this regard, it is good to review where thingsare at and where we anticipate things to be in thecoming school year. We were thankful to note that therewere sufficient funds for the programs in the respectiveschools to continue. We also note that each year theSpecial Education programs in our schools receivetargeted donations from our respective constituencies;our school treasurers appreciate continued support inthat regard! At the meeting, it was also noted that this was HarryMoes's last regional Special Education meeting. He isowed a great deal of gratitude for his leadership and theadvice given to the schools on a variety of situations. We wish him well in the next stage of his journey... andhope that he remains (as he often puts it) "only a phonecall away."
