Text and image layout for book

PROBLEM

As part of our senior thesis, my class was assigned the task of creating a supplemental book explaining the

processes behind each of our projects. I was part of a three-person design team that determined what materials

and format each book would take. One of our team members, who had taken a course in experimental book

making, suggested using a 16 page book, made entirely from a single sheet of Somerset paper. It was my job to

translate our team member’s plans into instructions for the rest of the class as to how to construct each book.

Once this phase of the preplanning process was complete, it was up to the entire class to determine the layouts of

their respective books.

SOLUTION

Since the subject of my senior project was a retelling of the classic Little Red Ridding Hood fable, I decided

to use a layout representing the interactions between predator and prey. I accomplished this by creating a playful

interplay of imagery hiding behind text. Once all the elements of my design where in place, I printed, trimmed,

scored, folded and glued my book together.

Text and image layout for broadsides

PROBLEM

In order to promote Verandah Home’s new line of Made in the USA products, my work assignment was

to design three, 24 x 36" broadsides. Each broadside was required to contain at least one product shot, text

explaining the company’s history and recent developments, and an overall emphasis on made in the USA

products.

SOLUTION

Since the focus of these broadsides was product, I minimized the two paragraphs of text to a small area at the

bottom, and filled the majority of visual space with lamps. To give each poster a modern feel—that went beyond a

typical red, white and blue theme—I also used extremely large, vertically-aligned text spelling out “USA”. Lastly, I

repeated line art from Verandah Home’s recently updated logo as a background element to provide a consistent

look throughout the broadside series.

PROBLEM

In this example, my task was to update Elite Collections’ Logo with a recent company restructuring in mind: my

employer wanted an emphasis on the company’s move from imported to domestically-produced lighting and ac-

cessories. An additional theme suggested to me was well-designed and crafted products.

SOLUTION

Baring in mind that this logo was targeted to a wholesale, cost-driven audience, I aimed for less visual subtlety,

and more immediate impact in my visual communication. I chose vibrant hues of red, white and blue, with a box

with sketch-like edges around the “E.” This last visual element symbolized a return to the company’s domestically

designed and produced origins. After input from members of the marketing team, it was decided that a more

traditional, serif font would be the more appropriate font for this logo.

PROBLEM

As part of a school project, each class member was assigned the task of producing two variations of pro-

motional broadsides for an upcoming Macbeth opera. Each broadside was required to communicate a separate

theme and either measure 24 x 36” or 36 x 24”.

SOLUTION

The first theme I chose was the cyclical nature of those in power, those seeking it, and the violence historically

inherit in this ongoing process. To represent this, I created a chaotic spiral with iconic imagery depicting soldiers,

lighting and a crown.

The second theme I focused on was the fracturing of Macbeth’s psyche that comes as a result of his betrayal

and murder of the king and his best friend. To accomplish this, I used a digital photographic technique of scanning

my face in one position, and turning my face halfway through the scan to another position. Additionally, I fractured

the main text to accentuate this effect.

PROBLEM

For this class assignment, my challenge was to create a symbolic representation of two, separate blog entries

from authors with diametrically opposed viewpoints. We were restricted to a eight-sided, accordion-style, French-

fold format. This piece would not only function as eight, separate, abstract images, but also, when unfolded, would

function as a single image.

SOLUTION

To complete this project, I first devised a unifying concept for the two blog entries: the global scale of electronic

communication that ties the entire blogosphere together. I represented this concept by digitally manipulating aerial

photographs of large bodies of water to signify the flow of electronic communication. The final image was scaled and

positioned to give a visual cohesiveness to each folded section, and printed on a textured paper to add dimension.

PROBLEM

In order to advertise the release of customizable lamp bodies, finishes and shades, I was assigned the task

of producing a series of photographs. This series was to include consistent lighting and positioning of table lamps

to illustrate the company’s versatility; in addition, each photograph was required to work within preexisting design

layouts from another member of our creative team.

SOLUTION

Following as closely as possible to the constraints of my task, I photographed each lamp with a virtually

continuous center position, soft lighting and camera settings. This attention to detail later allowed me to repeat a

single background image with analogous colors behind each lamp with minimal photo manipulation.

PROBLEM

As part of my test for hire to work contractually for Resolute Games & Apps, I was asked to develop a character

existing entirely within a candy world for a fictitious video game. This character could be created in any medium,

as long as the final image was viewable as a JPG. This test was intended to test my illustrative and design skills.

SOLUTION

Working from initial sketches and reference photos of candy products, I produced a layered digital illustration

for this character. Once the primary shapes of the character’s body was formed, a predetermined color palette was

applied to each shape with gradient fills, transparencies and brush strokes.

PROBLEM

In this example, my task was to first complete initial sketches another artist had generated for a character

animation sequence. My second task was to digitally paint these renderings into a complete, consistent and fluid

animation.

SOLUTION

Working with an extremely short time frame, I used tracing paper to simplify and stylize the rough sketches I was

provided. Next, I scanned these drawings and imported them into a Photoshop document as separate layers, sizing

each proportionally and aligning each to a corresponding frame. I then proceeded to paint each layer in the most

efficient, but visually stylish and cohesive manner possible.
