Ruth P. Lawton, a 30 year member of the Central Atlantic Chapter, peacefully passed away on January 5 at the age of 87. Jerry, her devoted husband of 66 years, moved from New Jersey to Webster, New York to be closer to family. That did not keep them from participating in activities of the chapter, especially the spring overnighter. Ruth always enjoyed her time with chapter members.

Philippines ReliefThe Board of our chapter voted to support the ef-forts of the YMCA in the Philippines as they struggle with the aftermath of the recent typoon that killed thousands, affected millions, and devasted entire communities. The Philippines YMCA is responding by providing critical supplies including water, food, medicine and shelter to some of the hardest hit ar-eas. The Board sent $100 in support of this effort.

Hank Van Zanten uses his trained musical skills as he belts out “5 Golden Rings!”

Jim and Christine Brouse are faithful participants and attend many chapter events, even if Jim has to sing.

Our Best Buddy. It’s Santa Claus! He led the group in a Christmas present swap. The presents were hilarious and the reaction to them was priceless.

Making sure Santa doesn’t fly over her house, our Member-ship Vice President, Cathy Fromm is quick to get her list to Santa.

Game Day at the Ambler YMCA found Julie Painter, JoAnn Millet, Joyce Wilson, and Pat Hight playing Rummikub after enjoying a brown bag lunch.

FRANK C. KIEHNE of Reading, Pa., 88, passed away January 9, 2014. He was the husband of Delores Y. (Gutman) Kiehne, who passed away in 2011. After serving in the Marine Corps dur-ing World War II, he attended George Williams College where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and served as the President of the Student YMCA. Upon graduation, he worked with the Chicago, Kansas City and St. Louis YMCAs. In the 1960s, he was on a team to study the Communist Youth Program in the USSR under a cultural exchange program with the U.S. In 1961, Frank took a three month leave of absence from the YMCA to be a full-time consultant to the newly formed Peace Corps. Frank later served as the CEO of the YMCA of Reading and Berks County (1961-1970) and then the CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington. In 1973 he became the director of the YMCA of the USA’s International Division. He was recognized by AYR and received the F. William Stahl Award in 2005 which recognized Frank’s prolific writing in the areas of advocacy, peace and justice. His commitment and love for people globally was a constant source of inspi-ration that transcended the YMCA Movement.

Meet our New Treasurer - Veronica Elias InterviewI am amazed how quickly my 29 year YMCA career passed by. My career began at the Lower Bucks Family YMCA as Racquetball Director and Preschool Director, followed by Tri-Hampton Branch Director. I then served as Executive Director for the Roxborough Branch of the Philadelphia YMCA, followed by CEO of the Allentown YMCA and YWCA. All three associations were turn-a-round challenges forcing rapid personal and professional growth. For me, the Y is a ministry where I truly believe that God has His hand in all we do if we just get out of the way of ourselves and obey Him. Retiring at the end of 2012 to help my daughter care for her newborn triplets, I am blessed to be able to spend so much time with my grandchildren and my own children at this juncture in life. I am also blessed with another grand-daughter born at the same time as the triplets. My husband and I enjoy traveling and spend time biking local trails. We are building up to take a bike tour in France in the next couple of years. With retirement I can now get back to my missed sports of tennis and golf even with my creaky bones. Over the years, I wrote several articles for Perspective and am back to writing again. I am so grateful to re-join with my retired YMCA colleagues and enjoy the years to come in AYR.

Emergency Assistance FundMaurice Hight has agreed to be our chapter representa-tive for the Emergency Assistance Fund and will be work-ing with Dale Ventres on this effort. He has recently com-pleted work on an appeal for one of our members who was given a much needed grant and he urges all AYR mem-bers to make a donation to the EAF as soon as possible. Dale Ventres reports that gifts to the EAF have fallen off dramatically and needs all members to participate. Sixteen gifts have been received from members of the Central At-lantic Chapter and our “Thanks” goes out to the following:

Helene Baugher Bill & Marge Cameron` Dorothy Dunn Art & Rachel Eckenrode Martha Edwards Marie & Cheiv Farina Howard & Mary Merrick Anne Moore Don & Julie Painter Dave & Gini Potts Dick & Margaret Shelly Ken & Chris White Hank & Lois Van Zanten Len & Joyce Wilson Carl & Debra Zvanut

Dale is seeking donors who would participate in bank draft where a small amount is automatically withdrawn monthly from your financial institution. For more information contact the AYP office at 413-748-3885. Your gift should be sent to Emergency Assistance Fund, Stitzer YMCA Center, Spring-field College, 263 Alden St, Springfield, MA 01109-3772.

Christmas Party Always PopularThirty members of the Central Atlantic Chapter gathered at the new Havertown YMCA on December 11th for the an-nual Christmas Party. The YMCA, a new branch of the Phila-delphia and Freedom Valley YMCA, had only been open for two months. John Flynn, CEO, who was present, wel-comed us and treated us to lunch. Barbara Taylor, Chap-ter President, gave a hearty welcome and thanked Joe and JoAnn Millet for chairing this festive event. Joyce Wilson led the group in a word of prayer. Ilona Lind led the sing-ing of familiar Christmas Carols, while JoAnn directed a skit featuring “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” The “worst gift” exchange was conducted by Santa himself (played by Past President, Maurice Hight). Len Wilson and Barbara gave the group a preview of events planned for the AYR Regional Reunion in Charlotte Sept 29-Oct 1. They encour-aged all to attend this gathering. Following the party the members were given a guided tour of the new YMCA facili-ties by the Branch Executive. A good time was had by all!

The RitzmansAnne Moore updated us on the Ritzmans. Michael is home with Genevieve after his long stay in a facility fol-lowing brain surgery. With her care and home cooking, Michael is walking, with the aid of a walker and sing-ing in a choir. While his speech and memory are still af-fected, many are amazed at the huge improvement. The Ritzmans wish they could get to more meetings but distance and unknown territory makes that difficult.

Who Cares What They Look Like?Well-groomed chapter members care, that’s who! To look even sharper, Maurice has some limited, and I say limited, AYR white polo shirts and adjustable AYR hats. There is an introductory price available, also for a limited time, of $10 each. Now that’s better than the Dollar Store! For these hot items, call Maurice at 609-898-3554. These are not just to wear at the Charlotte Reunion, which is a very good idea; they can be worn anywhere to show your true colors.

Meet our New Chapter SecretariesAnnette and Steve Iverson were born in New York and were married in 1968. They moved to New Jersey and spent the next 36 years living in Central New Jersey where Steve worked for 28 years as the Director of Human Resources & Administration for Princeton University’s Plasma Physics Laboratory. Annette has worked for various companies as an Executive Assistant/Administrative Assistant. After taking early retirement from Princeton University they relocated back to their roots in New York where Steve was enticed by the Long Island YMCA to assume the position of Business Manager for the Family Services Branch in Centereach, Long Island. They missed their children who were both living in the Philadelphia area and decided to relocate to Langhorne, PA. During this time, Steve continued as Consultant for THE Y and after a short time, THE Y persuaded Steve to return, once again, as Business Manager. Off they went back to NY and after an additional three and a half years Steve wanted to retire from full-time employment and they returned to Pennsylvania and have made Bensalem their home. They have two children, Paul, a Health Care Manager for United Health Care and Lisa a Certified Vet Tech who is a veterinari-an nurse and manages a 24 hour emergency animal hospital in Havertown, PA. Steve received his BS Degree from NYU and Annette attended St. John’s University in NY. They enjoy reading, socializing, great movies, cruising and Steve is an avid hobbiest. A delicious dinner with wine is always a plus.
