Sir William Wallace  was a  Scottish knight and  landowner  who is known for leading a resistance during the  Wars of Scotland independence and is today remembered in Scotland as a patriot and national hero.

In the time period of William Wallace Scotland was under the constitution of England, and  Edward I was the king. He bounded Scotland by his cruel laws and the peoples of Scotland was fought for their freedom.

HISTORICAL PLOT

Page 11: Brave Heart

Along with Andrew Moray, he defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge, and became Guardian of Scotland, serving until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk. A few years later Wallace was captured in Robroyston near Glasgow and handed over to King Edward I of England, who had him executed for treason.

Wallace was the inspiration for the poem The Acts and Deeds of Sir William Wallace, Knight of Elderslie, by the 15th-century minstrel, Blind Harry and this poem was to some extent the basis of Randall Wallace's screenplay for the 1995 film Brave heart.

PLOT OF THE MOVIE

The story begins with young Wallace, whose father and brother have been killed fighting against the English. In 1280, King Edward I of England has occupied much of southern Scotland, and his oppressive rule there leads to the deaths of William Wallace's father and brother. After that Wallace has been taken into the custody of his uncle whowas a nationalist and pre-Renaissance man.

Page 13: Brave Heart

He returns twenty years later, become a man educated both in the classics and in the art of war. There he finds his childhood sweetheart Murron and the two quickly fall in love. There are murmurs of revolt against the English throughout the village, but Wallace remains aloof, wishing simply to tend to his crops and live in peace. However, when his love is killed by English soldiers the day after their secret marriage he springs into action and single-handedly slays an entire platoon of foot soldiers. The other villagers join him in destroying the English garrison, and thus begin the revolt against the English in what will eventually become full-fledged war.

Page 14: Brave Heart

Wallace eventually leads his fellow Scots in a series of bloody battles that prove a serious threat to English domination and, along the way, has a hushed affair with the Princess of Wales. She becomes enamored with him and secretly assists him in his fight. Wallace is caught in a trap set by the elder Bruce and the other nobles, beaten unconscious, and handed over to the English.  The English court responds by sentencing him to be "purified by pain."Even in the time of death he has been shouted for freedom .The film has finished with the heroic death of Wallace. Sometime later, Robert the Bruce leads a strong Scottish army and faces a ceremonial line of English troops at the fields of Bannockburn.

EXCELLENCE OF BRAVE HEART

Gibson does a terrific job on both sides of the camera.

His widescreen masterpiece is beautifully shot, from the

gorgeous locations and set pieces to the "cast of thousands"

battle scenes. Gibson's Wallace not only has his Scottish

brogue down very well, but is a picture of strength and

integrity. McGoohan is deliciously acts as Longshanks, and

Sophie Marceau (as Longshanks' daughter in law) also

turns in an excellent performance as a woman torn between

her duty and what‘s right.

BRAVE HEART WITH MY VIEW:Passion, Freedom, Love & Honor are just some few words that what this movie is about. This beautiful, inspiring, patriotic movie touches the heart in many ways. Amazingly written and directed with much authenticity, Mel Gibson brings us into the world of a true warrior, who stood for what he believed, no matter what it cost him. He portrays the heroic William Wallace in a way we will never forget. His spirit will live on forever.

With the touch of patriotism ,I think Brave Heart gets it fulfillness In romance. Wallace character reminds us an ideal romantic hero who has changed his way of living for his lover’s murder.

Page 19: Brave Heart

But nothing in the world is perfect. So every beautiful thing must has some negative sides.

• I think Wallace’s romantic character in the movie

sometime harts his patriotism and heroic character. At the

beginning when the seniors has come to him and request him

to join in the fight for freedom Wallace just denies the path of

war, but this Wallace plays the leading roll for freedom of

Scotland when his wife has been murdered by the British

soldiers.• In my point of view Wallace’s affair, with French Princess

Isabella , makes black spot in his character.• At last the movie ends in very simple manner. The death of

Wallace undoubtedly heroic one, but his way to death is very

simple.

On its opening weekend, Brave heart grossed US$9,938,276 in the United States and $75.6 million in its box office run in the United States and Canada. Worldwide, Braveheart grossed over $210 million and was the 18th highest grossing film of 1995.The film's depiction of the Battle of Stirling Bridge is often considered one of the greatest movie battles in cinema history. The film generated huge interest in Scotland and in Scottish history not only around the world, but also in Scotland itself. Fans come from all over the world to see the places in Scotland where William Wallace fought for Scottish freedom, and also to the places in Scotland and Ireland to see the locations used in the film.
