Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

You know, Lent is not just about food, and giving it up! Here’s a college student and Millenial’s approach to Lent! Her name is Winona. Try out something new! 1. Get Creative For God — Paint a painting, write a blog post, sing a song, make worship music, run for a charity….I could go on. God gave you talents; start using them to bring God to people. Maybe you’re just starting to use your talents or returning to certain talents that God gifted you with after not engaging them for some time. Make the commitment during Lent to discover or rediscover your God-given talents. 2. Forgive Someone With this Unique Method — Ephesians 4:33 – “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Is there someone who has deeply hurt you? Their very face brings up feelings of hurt and betrayal that you have buried somewhere in you. For each day of Lent write a compliment and pray a Hail Mary for the person. When we are hurt by someone we cling on to the bad points about the person. This challenge forces you for 40 days to write down the good about the person who hurt you deeply. It also brings out personal revelations about yourself and your role in the relationship breakdown allowing you to truly account for any hurt you inflicted on the person. Let’s not beat around the bush, this Lent challenge is hard! But at the very least with this challenge we may begin the healing process. 3. Compliment Your Facebook Friends — Private message a compliment to a Facebook friend every day for Lent. Your Facebook friends aren’t just a post on your homepage, get to know them by complimenting them. 4. Tithe — As a college student, or someone in a similar financial position, regular tithing is perhaps out of reach. However tithing during the season of Lent is achievable. If you are paid weekly it is roughly six pay checks that you are taking a small amount of money out of. Nowadays there’s a range of humanitarian and social causes that you can contribute to as well as your local church. 5. Break A Bad Habit — I am a notorious late riser. Refusing to wake up before 9am (10am on the weekends), I never had a morning prayer routine. Ever. This Lent I have committed to getting up at 8am (remember, small steps), kneeling beside my bed and reading the daily Bible readings. Let Lent be that first step towards breaking a bad habit. 6. Reach Out — Matthew 25:40 – “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” There are people in church and youth groups who are lonely. There are people lying in a hospital alone. There are people living on the street alone. We all want to love and be loved in return. If you know someone who is lonely, reach out. 7. Read A Psalm A Day — A Psalm a day keeps the devil away. The Bible can appear long and daunting to read, but how about starting with one psalm per day? The Book of Psalms is my favorite because it is short and a beautiful piece of literature. Psalms are also very personal: there’s a psalm for each of your emotions, achievements and burdens. Last week, I also encouraged you not only to do some DAILY spiritual reading, but also to GO TO CONFESSION! On Wednesdays we have confessions available during our Adoration time between 5:30-7pm. Look for other seasonal reconciliation possibilities in our tri-fold Lent, Holy Week and Easter pamphlet. But GO TO CONFESSION. Prepare yourself with a good Examination of Conscience on the USCCB (the U.S. Bishop’s Conference) website. Regular Confession, whether it be monthly, every two weeks, or weekly, doesn’t have to be scary. In fact, it is life changing and life giving! I continue from last week’s list of #1-5. This week: #6. You Become More Patient with Yourself – A priest once told me, “Don’t worry about repeating the same sins again and again in Confession – be grateful that there are no new sins to add!” In good time, God will heal our wounds. #7. Deep Personal Wounds Start to Heal and Acts of Grace Abound – confession is like cleaning and redressing a wound. The wound may not heal immediately, but it is never going to heal at all if it is not regularly cleaned and carefully redressed. Over time, the repeated cleaning and care for the wound eventually heals it. #8. Your Personal Relationship with Jesus Grows – only a sinner needs a savior. The more we recognize our sin, the more we realize we need a Savior, the more personal our relationship with Jesus becomes. #9. Your Reception of the Eucharist is Clarified – the purer the state of our souls, the more we can see clearly, so regular Confession means we are in a better state of grace to receive the Eucharist and can more lovingly, carefully, and reverently welcome Jesus into our hearts, and be far more receptive to His voice in our lives. In knowing His mercy on a regular basis, we grow in love for Him. #10. You Start to Seek Integrity in All You Do (i.e. Life Isn’t About Just “Not Sinning”) Light gets into the dark places that you’d prefer to stay hidden, but that isn’t as scary as it sounds. You start to really want to live your life with integrity in all things, and you see that Confession – and life – isn’t about simply “not sinning.” It is about living alongside Jesus, so that His heart directs your heart, and all your actions orientate themselves to Him. We find peace when our lives are centered on Him, not on ourselves – NOT “thinking less of ourselves,” but, rather, thinking of ourselves less, and Him more! Then, #11. You Want to Go Back! With regular Confession, you start to notice if you haven’t been in a long time – perhaps not in any dramatic way, but you have a dragging feeling, a heaviness of heart, or a sense that things need putting back to rights. If it’s been a long time since you last went to Confession, I really encourage and invite you to go back. Maybe you’ve been thinking about it for some time, and just need a little nudge in the right direction. Well, here’s your sign! I’m praying for you!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Thank you to everyone who has already made a pledge to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your gi s will benefit so many through the thirty ministries our annual appeal supports. Our parish’s goal for the 2018 CMAA is $76,500. Our hope is that every parishioner will contribute as partners in caring, as every gi — large and small — makes a difference. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount paid over goal will be returned to us for our use. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish! Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA. In-pew envelopes are s ll available in the church, or you can make a gi online at jolietdioceseappeal.org.

A Heartfelt Thank You to All Parishioners: There comes a time when all good things must come to an end. The time for me has arrived. Since the untimely death of my husband Jack in January, I find it very difficult to carry on his operation of the We Care Food Pantry. Even though we were partners together of the pantry, as well as in life, it is never the same when one half is gone. For the past 15 ½ years, Jack and I faithfully coordinated the distribution of food to the needy families of Romeoville. Each and every Wednesday we were both there to oversee and plan the happenings of the pantry. We made many friends throughout the years, but I find I am lost without him by my side.

Therefore, I am “passing the baton” to a wonderful woman, Shirley Grzenia and her husband Jim. Shirley had been involved for years with DuPage Township so she is well aware and knowledgeable of what running a food pantry entails. She is a very hard worker for the needy and for children. She and her daughter have started an organization called “4 Kids Sake” because she feels every child and family needs a chance. I hope you will welcome Shirley and Jim as you have so graciously supported the work Jack and I did for the pantry through the years. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for everyone’s generous contributions to We Care through collections, personal checks sent to our home, and organizations that contributed to us in helping to feed the families of Romeoville. You all have been the reason for the success of We Care. Please know you will be remembered in my prayers of thanksgiving for the outpouring of love and generosity given to our food pantry all these years. I know Jack was so proud of his volunteers who never waivered in bad weather, on delivery days (which is quite a chore) or just helping a person bring their food to their cars. He is greatly missed by so many friends and especially by me. My heart was shattered in January, but it still feels love and pride for all our parishioners here at St. Andrew. To Father Gregor—you are not only our Pastor, you have become a very close and compassionate friend who helped me through this terrible time. You are the best of the best. With Deepest Gratitude, Pat Frazier

We would like to encourage you to give from the heart for a new oil painting of St. John Paul II, which is being commissioned specifically for St. Andrew the Apostle Parish, with the unanimous support of the Parish Pastoral Council (adopted February 13, 2018). This new portrait will be painted on canvas with the same dimensions as the current copy now hanging in the church which will be

replaced by this new painting. The cost of the painting is $3,500.00. Any contribution no matter how small is a great gift! Any funds raised above the expense of the painting will be designated for the Foundation for the Future. Starting next Sunday watch for a special envelope printed for this specific purpose, by which you'll be able to donate to the expense of this painting. Again, please give from your heart and join us in obtaining this beautiful painting of St. John Paul II for our parish family!

CROSS OF WISHES

The Cross of Wishes is up on the wall at the church entrances. There are small purple crosses with items that our Parish Staff wish for that may not be in the budget this year. Thank you for your unending kindness. Please take a cross, put your name and phone number on the back and drop it in the collection basket or bring it to the office, and someone will call you with details. God bless you!

On Holy Thursday, March 29, join parishioners of St. Andrew the Apostle on an evening pilgrimage tour of 7 area churches. We will take time in prayer at each of the churches and conclude with night prayer at St. Andrew at Midnight. There are two buses reserved to leave immediately following the Holy Thursday 7:00 PM Mass of the

Lord’s Supper. You must call the office at 815-886-4165 to reserve a spot on the bus, or you may also follow along in your own car.

Forwarded Message: Empower Illinois Scholarship Application Opens Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. We are pleased to announce the Empower Illinois scholarship application system will open on Tuesday, February 27 at 7:00 p.m. Our system has been enhanced to make it easier for families and to manage the demand expected for tax credit scholarships to private schools throughout Illinois.

The new application will be available through the Empower Illinois website. It will be a two-step process. Reserve : On Feb. 27 at 7:00 p.m. families will complete a brief online form containing name and contact information,

child name and preferred school. This will time stamp your application for the first-come, first-served scholar-ships.

Apply : After reserving your place in line, families will be emailed a unique link and use their reservation code to complete the application. Applications will be sent on a rolling basis, over the course of a few weeks. After receiving the application email, families will have 3 days to complete the application and submit all required documents.

Our goal with this two-step process is to make it easier for families and provide more time to ensure your application is accurate and complete.

We understand that as parents and guardians, your life is busy. That’s why the reservation system will be accessible from mobile devices as well. Everything you will need for the reservation step should be top of mind. Once you get your application link, please use a computer to submit the required documents and finish the application accurately, without rushing.

If a student has already received a scholarship award letter, they do not need to reserve or apply. However, all other students should reserve and apply through this system beginning Feb. 27, regardless of how far you may have gotten through our old application. More information, including helpful documents, FAQs and instructions, can be found on our website.

We know your children only get one chance at a great education. We are grateful for your patience and trust as we work to improve access to quality education for every child, in every neighborhood.

Don’t forget about the other scholarships that you can apply for. The Catholic Education Foundation, the

Bartel Family Scholarship, and the Sister Delores Scholarship all have a deadline of March 1. To be con-

sidered for these scholarships, you must complete the FACTS Grant & Aid application online. Three of

the scholarships require additional paperwork. You can pick up a copy in the school office or download

them from our website. The Knights of Columbus Scholarship has an application

you must fill out and has a deadline of April 15.

You can find out more information about the scholarships from the Catholic Education Foundation and

the three additional St. Andrew Parish scholarships

by going to our website http://www.andrewcc.org/scholarship-information.

You can fill out the Facts Grant & Aid application by going to https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/3D8S9.

If you have any questions, you can email Jill B. at [email protected].

Below is a forwarded message for the SGO that is handling the Tax Credit Scholarship. The portal is going to reopen next week. If you read through you will see that the initial input of information is very minimal so we will not be gathering as a

group to do this. However, when you get to the second part of the process and they send you your direct link to the application, we will be happy to assist you if you call the office and schedule a time to come in. If you have any other questions, please feel

free to contact me at any time at [email protected].

I remain very excited about this opportunity for all our families.

Peace, Mrs. Carol Albreski
