How Brazil Came to BePedros Alvarez and a

massive Portuguese sailing fleet made there way to Brazil. Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese in April of 1500.

They encountered natives separated by many tribes. The Portuguese colonists brought Brazil the Roman Catholicism faith. Brazil is the only country who speaks Portuguese in South America, and today, Brazil is the largest country that contains Catholic believers.

Brazilian History• King Joao VI fled from Portugal to

Rio de Janeiro, in fear of the Napoleonic Wars. There was a massive revolution when Portugal tried to build up colonial rule in Brazil. Brazil received its independence on September 7, 1822

• Brazil was ruled by a military dictatorship, but after several years, a revolt brought back civilian presidents.

• Dilma Rousseff is the current president in Brazil and Brazil is a Federal Republican country ( on the right is a picture of the President).

Geography

• Brazil is the fifth largest nation in the world and is the largest country in South America.

• Brazil has every South American country border line, expect Ecuador and Chile.

Landscape

• Brazil extends to 2,965 mi north-south and 2,691 mi east – west.

• The beautiful Brazil is known for its jungles, especially the Amazon, which is the biggest jungle in the world. Brazil also has grasslands and a long coastal plain.

• In the south, Brazil is divided by highlands and the mighty Amazon river divides the northern part of Brazil.

The People Of Brazil • A Brazilian is a person born in Brazil. In

2010, the population in Brazil was 190,732,694. Brazil is a multiethnic society and Brazilians treat their “nationality as a citizenship, not an ethnicity.”

• When the Portuguese first colonized Brazil, there were Amerindians. The Portuguese were the main European immigrants in Brazil until the 16th century.

• From the 16th century until the 19th century, the Atlantic Slave Trade was brought to Brazil and there was an estimate of 4 million African slaves being brought to Brazil.

Brazilians • Between 1820 – 1975, a total of

5,686,133 immigrants entered Brazil and the majority of these immigrants were Europeans.

• Portuguese and Italians took 70% of the mass majority of immigrants during 1820 – 1975. The rest of the immigrants consisted of Spaniards, Japanese, Germans, Lebanese, and Syrians.

• Brazil is made up of 93 million Caucasians, 91.7 million Afro-Brazilian, and 1.3 million Asian or Amerindians

Brazilian Culture - Capoeira • Even though Brazil has a lot of

different immigrants, the Brazilian culture is very diverse and unique.

• The Africans arrived in Brazil during the Slave Trade which took place in the 1600s to the 1900s. The slaves established a fighting skill to protect themselves. This style of fighting is called Capoeira, which is a Brazilian form of martial arts, dancing, and music. Capoeira is still taught today.

Brazilian Culture – Carnival • A big culture that the

Brazilians participate in is the Carnival of Brazil. This Carnival is held forty-six days before Easter.

• Brazilians organize a massive parade were they dress up in unique costumes. This Carnival is influenced by the Afro – Brazilian culture.
