Establishing the pink ribbon symbol - MetroCreat ive

The pink r ibbon has been synonymous

with breast cancer for years . Nowadays ,

people rare ly think twice when they see

pink r ibbons, having grown accustomed to the pink r ibbon

and what i t symbol izes .

Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been ce lebrated each

year s ince 1985, and many other

breast cancer awareness

in i t ia t ives have been dev ised

s ince then. Whi le the p ink r ibbon may seem l ike i t ’ s been in use for just as long , i t was actua l ly es tabl i shed only about 20 years ago .

Ribbons have long symbol ized something important . For decades , ye l low r ibbons have been used to a ler t others to so ld iers a t war or hostages that hadn ’ t yet

come home. People of ten t ie ye l low r ibbons around trees a t home unt i l the ir serv ice men and women came home safe ly . During the he ight of HIV/AIDS act iv i sm and awareness , red r ibbons were worn to symbol ize support for those with the d isease .

Although the p ink r ibbon evolved because p ink expresses feminini ty , ca lm, hea l th , and youth, the f i r s t breast cancer r ibbon was actua l ly peach. Char lotte Haley i s credi ted with dev is ing the f i r s t breast cancer r ibbon in 1992. She was a breast cancer surv ivor and came from a fami ly of women who a l so fought the d isease . She created peach-colored loops at home and then dis tr ibuted the r ibbons at her loca l grocery s tores . Haley encouraged people to wear the r ibbons and contact l eg i s la tors to demand more funding for breast cancer research . An at tached note was d is tr ibuted with the r ibbons s tat ing , “The Nat ional Cancer Inst i tute annual budget i s $1 .8 b i l l ion , only 5 percent goes for cancer prevent ion. Help us wake up our leg i s la tors and America by wear ing th is r ibbon.”

The same year Eve lyn

Lauder , senior corporate v ice pres ident for the Estee Lauder company, and Se l f magazine edi tor Alexandra Penney teamed up to produce a p ink r ibbon. I t was d is tr ibuted at makeup counters a l l across the country . The company co l lected more than 200,000 pink r ibbon pet i t ions ask ing the U.S. government for increased funding for breast cancer research .

Although Lauder and Haley reached people on d i f ferent leve l s , the ir goa ls were the same: To educate the publ ic on the lack of funds a l lot ted to breast cancer research .

Pink r ibbons are now seen a l l over and have become the

unit ing force for mi l l ions of women who are fac ing breast cancer or support ing someone with the d isease . In 1996, Nancy Nick created a b lue-and-pink r ibbon to symbol ize male breast cancer r ibbons in honor of her la te fa ther . The r ibbons remind others that breast cancer can a f fect men as wel l as women.

Although you can see waves of p ink every October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, many people don the ir r ibbons year-round. Great s tr ides have been made with respect to breast cancer , but with about 225,000 new cases popping up each year in the United States a lone , there i s s t i l l work to be done .

History of mammogram technology - MetroCreat ive

Mammography remains one of

the most popular and wel l -known

diagnost ic tools for breast cancer .

I t i s es t imated that 48 mi l l ion mammograms are per formed each year in the United States and many others are conducted a l l around the wor ld under the recommended guidance of doctors and cancer experts .

Mammography can be t raced back more than 100 years to 1913, when German surgeon Albert Sa lomon at tempted to v i sua l ize cancer of the

breast through radiography. By the 1930s , the concept of mammography was ga in ing tract ion in the United States . Staf ford L. Warren, an American phys ic ian and radio log is t , began his own work on mammography, deve loping techniques of producing s tereoscopic images of the breast with X-rays . He a l so championed the importance of compar ing both breast images s ide-by-s ide .

Raul Leborgne , a radio log is t f rom Uruguay , conducted his own work on mammography and, in 1949, introduced the compress ion technique , which remains in use today . By compress ing the breast , i t i s poss ib le to get better imaging

through the breast and use a lower dose of radiat ion. Also , compress ion he lps spread the s tructures of the breast apart to make i t eas ier to see the indiv idual interna l components . Compress ion he lps to pul l the breast away f rom the chest wal l and a l so to immobi l ize the breast for imaging .

Advancements in mammogram technology cont inued to improve through the 1950s and 1960s . Texas radio log is t Robert Egan introduced a new technique with a f ine-gra in intens i fy ing screen and improved f i lm to produce c learer images . In 1969, the f i r s t modern-day f i lm mammogram was invented

and put into widespread use . The mammogram process was f ine-tuned in 1972 when a h igh-def in i t ion intens i fy ing screen produced sharper images and new f i lm of fered rapid process ing and shorter exposure to radiat ion. By 1976, the American Cancer Soc iety began recommending mammography as a screening tool .

Through the years , mammography became a great he lp to women looking to arm themselves aga inst breast cancer . Thanks to improvements in ear ly detect ion and treatment , breast cancer deaths are down from the ir peak and surv iva l rates cont inue to c l imb.

Preparing for your mammography visit - MetroCreat ive

Annual mammograms are

widely recommended for women beginning

at age 40.

Some est imates suggest that more than 48 mi l l ion mammography screenings are per formed in the United States every year .

Whether i t i s a woman’s f i r s t mammography or her twent ieth , prepar ing for the appointment can ease anxiety and make the exper ience go more smoothly . The fo l lowing are some guide l ines to cons ider when prepar ing for a mammography v i s i t .

· Choose a reputable and cert i f ied fac i l i ty . Se lect a radio logy center that i s cert i f i ed by the FDA. Many women a l so prefer to se lect a fac i l i ty that i s covered by the ir hea l th insurance . Plans usua l ly a l low one screening per year .

· Time your v is i t . Schedule the mammogram to take p lace one week a f ter your menstrua l per iod i f you have not reached menopause . Breasts are l ess l ike ly to be tender at th is t ime. Also , schedule your v i s i t for a t ime when you are not l ike ly to fee l rushed or s tressed .

· Dress for the occas ion. Two-piece ensembles enable you to only remove your shir t and bra for the examinat ion. A b louse that opens in the f ront

may be opt imal .

· Watch your grooming pract ices . You ’ l l be adv ised to absta in f rom wear ing powder , per fume, deodorant , o intment , and lot ions on the chest or around the area . These substances may look l ike an abnormal i t ies on the mammogram image , potent ia l ly resul t ing in fa l se pos i t ive d iagnoses .

· Take an OTC pain medicat ion. Mammograms are not necessar i ly pa infu l , but they can put pressure on the breasts , which creates d iscomfort . Breasts are compressed between a p last ic p late and the imaging machine . This spreads out the t i ssue and he lps create a c learer

p icture . I f your breasts are tender , medicat ions l ike acetaminophen or ibuprofen taken an hour before the appointment may ease d iscomfort .

· Expect a short v is i t . Mammogram appointments typica l ly las t around 30 minutes . The technic ian mark any moles or b ir thmarks around the breasts so they can be ignored. You ’ l l be asked to hold your breath as the images are taken. I f the images are acceptable , you are f ree to go .

Mammograms are now a rout ine part o f women’s preventat ive hea l th care . The procedure i s s imple and appointments are quick and re lat ive ly pa in less .

What do dense breasts mean for cancer risk? - MetroCreat ive

Breast cancer r isk i s inf luenced by many

things , inc luding heredity , age and

gender . Breast densi ty i s another

factor that may af fect cancer r isk and the

abi l i ty to detect breast cancer in i ts ear l iest s tages , say

some experts .

According to the report , “Mammographic dens i ty and the r i sk and detect ion of breast cancer , ” publ i shed by

The New England Journal o f Medic ine , as wel l as data f rom the Nat ional Cancer Inst i tute , women with h igh breast dens i ty are four to f ive t imes more l ike ly to get breast cancer . Only age and BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutat ions increase r i sk more . However , a t th is t ime, hea l th care prov iders do not rout ine ly use a woman’s breast dens i ty to assess her breast cancer r i sk , according to Susan G. Komen for the Cure .

Densi ty does not re fer to the s ize or shape of the breast , and i t may not be apparent by just looking at the breasts . Usual ly women do not learn they have dense breasts unt i l the ir f i r s t mammograms. Dense breasts have more g landular and f ibrous t i ssue . Dens i ty may be

heredi tary , meaning mothers and daughters can share s imi lar breast character i s t ics .

Dense breasts cannot eas i ly be seen through on a mammogram, which can make detect ing lumps and other abnormal i t ies more d i f f i cu l t . This can lead to missed cancers or cancers that are d iscovered at la ter s tages . Women with dense breasts may require addit ional screening methods , such as a breast u l t rasound or an MRI, in addit ion to year ly mammogram screenings .

Educat ion about breast dens i ty i s ga in ing tract ion in some areas , thanks to informed women and advocacy groups l ike AreYouDense .org . Some states in the United States are part o f “ inform” l i s t s , in which radio log is ts inc lude informat ion about breast dens i ty on mammogram reports so women and doctors can make dec is ions about extra test ing .

Even i f a woman does not l i ve in a s tate where

dens i ty i s shared, she can request the informat ion f rom the radio log is t or doctor . Dense breasts show up with more pockets of white on

mammograms than gray fat ty t i s sue in less dense breasts . Cancer a l so appears white , and, therefore , tumors can be h idden.

In addit ion to more

in-depth screenings , women with dense breasts can lower cancer r i sk by fo l lowing these guide l ines :

· Maintain a healthy weight .

· Eat nutr i t ious food.

· Exerc ise regular ly .

· Never smoke or quit immediate ly .

· Limit a lcohol consumption.

· Ask for dig i ta l mammography.

Women can cons ider breast dens i ty with other r i sk factors in the f ight aga inst breast cancer .

Did you know?

Breast cancer can affect both men and women and is one of the most common forms of cancer . Thanks to increased awareness and screenings , many cases of breast cancer are diagnosed ear ly and treated successful ly .

The differences between chemotherapy and radiation - MetroCreat ive

Cancer can spread throughout the body,

inf i l trat ing healthy ce l l s and causing an

uncontrol led div is ion of abnormal ce l l s .

Various cancer-treatment opt ions are ava i lab le to t reat men and women, but the ones most fami l iar to many people are radiat ion and chemotherapy . Working with the ir doctors , pat ients can explore the ir t reatment opt ions to determine which therapies may be most e f fect ive .

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy i s a cancer

t reatment in which a pat ient i s administered drugs that are des igned to k i l l cancer ce l l s . These drugs work by at tacking the components that a l low ce l l s to d iv ide , grow and spread. Many chemotherapy drugs are g iven intravenous ly , in cyc les , over a couple of weeks , but some chemotherapy medicat ions may be taken ora l ly . Chemotherapy pr imar i ly targets ce l l s that d iv ide rapid ly , l ike cancer ce l l s . But because other hea l thy ce l l s a l so d iv ide rapid ly , such as ce l l s in the ha ir and digest ive t ract , pat ients may exper ience s ide e f fects in these areas when undergoing chemotherapy treatment , according to the Southeast Radiat ion Oncology Group.

Radiat ion

Radiat ion surrounds us in var ious forms. The high-energy part ic les and waves conta ined in radiat ion can be used in cancer therapy , according to the American Cancer Soc iety . Radiat ion therapy can be de l ivered in var ious forms. Externa l radiat ion uses a machine that prec ise ly d irects h igh-energy rays f rom outs ide of the body into a tumor and nearby t i ssue . Interna l radiat ion re l ies on a radioact ive implant p laced ins ide the body near the tumor . Systemic radiat ion i s the de l ivery of radioact ive mater ia l s to a pat ient ora l ly or through an in ject ion.

Hormone therapy

Doctors may suggest hormone therapy to t reat breast cancer . The American Cancer Soc iety says es trogen promotes the growth of cancers that are hormone receptor-pos i t ive . Hormone therapy wi l l lower estrogen leve l s or prevent es trogen f rom act ing on breast cancer ce l l s . However , i t wi l l not work on tumors that are hormone receptor-negat ive .

Doctors use a combinat ion of therapies to t reat cancer . Learn more at The Nat ional Inst i tutes of Heal th ’ s MedLine Plus webs i te nlm.nih .gov/medl inep lus/drug in format ion .h tml or speak with an oncolog is t .

Cancer therapy and coping with hair loss - MetroCreat ive

Hair loss i s one s ide e f fect widely

associated with cancer treatment , though not

a l l cancer pat ients wi l l lose their hair .

For example , pat ients undergoing radiat ion therapy for breast cancer wi l l not lose the ha ir on the ir heads because radiat ion i s a loca l ized treatment . Hair loss in the area of t reatment , such as under the arms or on the breast i t se l f , may occur . But ha ir loss on other areas of the body i s more l ike ly to occur as a resul t o f chemotherapy treatment , as chemotherapy

a f fects the ent i re body. Chemotherapy targets rapid ly d iv id ing ce l l s . Hair fo l l i c les are some of the fastest -growing ce l l s in the body and chemotherapy targets fas t -growing cancer ce l l s .

Var ious s tudies show that many women fear los ing the ir ha ir more than los ing a breast , as breast loss can be concea led more eas i ly than ha ir loss . However , there are ways to cope with ha ir loss , part icu lar ly through the use of wigs and head cover ings .

· Ask your doctor to wr i te a prescr ipt ion for a wig , which may be covered by your hea l th insurance .

· Start shopping for a wig

ear ly on - even before ha ir loss occurs . As you get further a long into t reatment , you may fee l fa t igued and not up to shopping for wigs .

· Choose a co lor that i s s imi lar to your natura l ha ir co lor . This wi l l he lp the wig look more natura l .

· I f poss ib le , purchase more than one wig so you have a backup or another s ty le choice .

· Vis i t a wig s tore at l east once for a proper f i t t ing so you wi l l know what to look for . Wigs come in d i f ferent cap s izes . Once you know your s ize , you can cons ider shopping for wigs onl ine .

· Human hair wigs are more

expens ive , but they can be more durable than synthet ic wigs and of fer more s ty l ing choices . However , synthet ic wigs can usual ly be worn out of the box and require l ess da i ly s ty l ing .

· Head wraps and hats are an a l ternat ive when you need a break f rom wear ing a wig . Choose a var iety of opt ions so you can coordinate with your c lothing .

Los ing ha ir due to cancer t reatment i s se ldom easy . Be ing prepared for the t rans i t ion by hav ing a qual i ty wig and comfortable head wraps at the ready can make dea l ing with ha ir loss eas ier .

How to talk to your children about your diagnosis - Newspaper Toolbox

“How on earth am I going to te l l my

chi ldren?”

This quest ion haunts a l l mothers who have just rece ived a breast cancer d iagnos is .

Fortunate ly , psychologis ts , cancer surv ivors and soc ia l workers have establ i shed some ground rules to fac i l i ta te th is s tep .

Choose a good t ime

When you ’re ready to break the news , wai t unt i l a l l your chi ldren are gathered together in a fami l iar p lace . This approach has two advantages . F irs t , i t a l lows a l l o f them to hear the same informat ion

s imultaneous ly . I t a l so prevents any one chi ld f rom fee l ing exc luded or hurt by hear ing the news a f ter h is or her s ib l ings .

Tell the truth

When the t ime comes , avoid long preambles and get s tra ight to the point .

After announcing your d iagnos is , take the t ime to ensure that your chi ldren have understood the informat ion you just gave them. Even though the subject i s a d i f f i cu l t one to dea l with , s i l ence and denia l won ’ t he lp them understand or accept the s i tuat ion.

Be candid and expla in to

your chi ldren a l l the s teps you ’ l l have to go through in the coming months ( treatments , s ide e f fects , operat ion, e tc . ) .

Encourage them to ask any quest ions that are worry ing them.

Read to them

Breast cancer i s a rather abstract concept for young chi ldren . To he lp them better understand, read s tor ies to them that dea l with th is de l icate subject in s imple terms. You can f ind severa l beaut i fu l ly i l lustrated books in bookstores , through breast cancer support groups or at your loca l l ibrary .

Lesser-known symptoms of breast cancer - MetroCreat ive

Lumps in the breast are not the only potent ia l indicators of breast cancer .

Publ ic percept ion that breast cancer i s only ident i f ied by lumps detected through se l f -examinat ion or rout ine mammography may prevent thousands of women from rece iv ing an ear ly d iagnos is and the care they need. Although lumps are the most common symptom assoc iated with the d isease , women should recognize that breast cancer can produce addit ional symptoms.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure advises that the warning

s igns for breast cancer are not the same for a l l women (or men) . Var ious changes in the breast and body can occur , inc luding the fo l lowing condit ions .

· Breast-s ize changes : Many le f t and r ight breasts are not complete ly symmetr ica l , and women fami l iar with the ir bodies know that one breast i s o f ten s l ight ly larger than the other . However , breast-s ize changes that occur out of the b lue may be indicat ive of a medica l problem.

· Skin rash or redness : Women who are breast feeding can exper ience a rash on the breasts f rom an infect ion of breast t i s sue . But those who

are not breast feeding should be eva luated by a doctor i f redness , i r r i tat ion or rash appears .

· Nipple changes : Nipple d ischarge that s tarts suddenly and i s not assoc iated with breast feeding can be indicat ive of cancer . Other changes to the n ipples , such as pul l ing in of the n ipple ( invers ion) or i tchy , sca l ing sk in on the n ipple , should be brought to the at tent ion of a doctor .

· Changes to the sk in : Dimpl ing of the sk in , pee l ing , f lak ing , or sca l ing sk in can be a cause for concern as wel l .

· Lumps e l sewhere : Cancerous tumors may not only be fe l t in the breasts . Breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes around the breasts , and lumps may be fe l t under the arms.

· Unexpla ined pa in: The Mayo Cl in ic adv ises that l ess than 10 percent of people d iagnosed with breast cancer report pa in as a symptom. But unexpla ined pa in in an area of the breast should not be ignored. Breast pa in that does not go away and seems to involve one area of the breast should be checked.

· Fat igue : Genera l cancer symptoms can inc lude unusual fa t igue and unexpla ined weight loss . These symptoms should not be le f t unchecked.

One of the best th ings women and men can do i s to fami l iar ize themselves with the ir bodies so they wi l l be more capable of p inpoint ing any i rregular i t ies that may deve lop. Indiv iduals can rout ine ly look at the ir breasts and inspect for subt le changes . But remember that hormonal breast changes occur dur ing the menstrua l cyc le , so i t ’ s best to be fami l iar with how breasts look and fee l both dur ing and a f ter menstruat ion.

A woman who is in the process of f ight ing breast cancer needs a great deal of support .

Some days can be hard to get through, and a wel l -organized support network can make a l l the d i f ference .
