THE USE OF CHEMOTHERAPY TO TREAT BREAST CANCERThere are many different ways to treat breast cancer. The decision about how to treat cancer is dependent upon the type of breast cancer, the stage of the cancer, the health of the patient and the patient’s treatment goals. One of the most common ways to treat breast cancer is with chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy is a term that is used a lot in reference to cancer treatment. It refers to the use of drugs that are designed to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy (also referred to as “chemo”) treats cancer throughout the body. So, if the cancer has spread from the breast then the chemotherapy would treat the other affected areas as well.

HOW BREAST CANCER IS DIAGNOSED

It can be frightening to suspect that you might have breast cancer. However, if you think that you might have breast can-cer then the best thing that you can do for yourself is to see a doctor for an accurate diagnosis because it is only with a diag-nosis that you can begin treatment.

There are several steps involved with a breast cancer diagnosis.

BREAST CANCER SCREENINGS SAVE LIVES

The best way to avoid dying from breast cancer is to make sure that any cancer is detected early. Most breast cancers that are diagnosed at an early stage are highly curable and the vast majority of women survive and live healthy lives.

Screening The fi rst step to a proper diagnosis is screening. Any woman, at any age post puberty, can perform a breast self exam at home. Most of the major cancer organizations recommend that women speak to their doctors about self exams, about how to perform them accurately and about their effectiveness.

RADIATION IS AN IMPOR-TANT PART OF BREAST CANCER TREATMENT

If you are diagnosed with breast cancer then your doctor will discuss all of your treatment options with you. The recommended treat-ment depends in part on the type of cancer that you have and the stage of your cancer. A lot of terms may be discussed and it is impor-tant to understand all of them. One term that you might here often is radiation.

What is Radiation Treatment?Radiation uses X-rays to target the cancer-ous cells and kill them. Often, it is used after surgery to remove the cancerous growth. The use of radiation after surgery makes sure that all of the cancer is killed and that the patient is cancer free. The biggest risk associated with radiation is that it will harm the healthy tissue surrounding the cancer. The radiation oncologist who will be conducting the treat-ment meets with the patient for planning ses-sions prior to the treatment. During the plan-ning sessions, the oncologist will make small dots on the body which mark exactly where the radiation should go.

UNDERSTANDING BREAST CAN-CER RISK FACTORS

Currently, there is no defi nitive test that can predict whether a woman will develop breast cancer. It is a disease that is not preventable. However, early detection of breast cancer can signifi cantly increase a woman’s chances of survival and can decrease the amount of treatment that she needs. It is important for every woman to know the symptoms of breast cancer and to have regular medical exams.

More on Understanding Breast Cancer Risk Factors

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF BREAST CANCER STATISTICS

Breast cancer is deeply personal. It fundamentally affects the patient, her family and her friends in a way that sta-tistics cannot capture. However, the statistics do provide useful information about the number of women who are affected by this disease and about different trends with the disease. So, while statistics may provide little comfort to a patient and her loved ones who are dealing with the effects of breast cancer, the statistics do provide objective infor-mation about the prevalence of the disease, the women who are at greatest risk of developing the disease and how we, as a society, are doing in combating the disease.

UNDERSTANDING BREAST CANCER SYMPTOMS COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE

A woman’s likelihood of surviving breast cancer is greatest when the cancer is detected early. In order for the cancer to be diagnosed and treated in the early stages, it is important for women to recognize the symptoms of breast cancer so that they can promptly visit their physi-cians and get the necessary treatment.

The LumpOne of the most common symptoms of breast cancer is a lump in the breast. Often, the lump is not painful and it is only detectable to the touch. That is why women are encouraged to conduct monthly self exams so that they can detect any changes in the way their breasts feel to the touch.

Understanding Breast Cancer Symptoms Could Save Your Life

BREAST CANCER SURGERYLike all breast cancer treatments, breast cancer surgery is not a one size fi ts all treatment option. There are different types of surgeries available that are effective for different types of breast cancers and for different patients.

Surgery OptionsWomen who are diagnosed with early stage breast cancer have more options than women who have advanced stage breast cancer. Wom-en with advanced breast cancer that has spread throughout the breast may require a mastectomy that removes the entire breast.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BREAST CANCER

Not all cancer of the breast is the same. Most breast cancers either start in the glands or lobules that make breast milk, lobular carcinoma, or the cancer starts in the ducts that carry the milk to the nipple, ductal carcinoma. The tissues in the glands and the ducts are different from each other and so are the cancers that form in those parts of the breast. Other rare forms of breast cancer can also occur. It is important to a patient’s prognosis that her doctor properly diagnosis and treat the particular kind of breast can-cer from which she suffers.

Cancer is a complicated disease that requires com-prehensive treatment. The proper treatment of cancer re-quires dedicated professionals who can administer proven and innovative treatments. Since cancer treatment can be long, dif-fi cult and expensive, support services are necessary for patients and their families. Research is also important so that new cancer treatments and vaccines can be developed to help treat cancer more effectively in the future. Some institutions focus on treat-ment, support or research. However, many institutions focus on all three elements of cancer care. All of these institutions, whether they are comprehensive or complimentary to other in-stitutions, have an important part to play in the way cancer, and most importantly, cancer patients and their families are treated in the United States.

The list provided gives examples of some quality cancer institu-tions in every state of this country.
