Susan Chu first became interested in horses through riding, which she still does, as does her 11-year-old son, Jerry. But a trip to the 2010 Kentucky Derby helped pique her interest in Thoroughbred racing, and she got the support of her husband, Charles, to get involved as more than a spectator.

Chu now has just a handful of runners, but what success she’s had. Last year, she had one of the most promising and precocious 3-year-olds in Super Ninety Nine, who won the Grade 3 South-west Stakes and then was third in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby before he went to the sidelines.

Super Ninety Nine is working regularly at Santa Anita and is nearing a return to action at age 4, but in the meantime, Chu has seen her Derby aspirations realized to an even greater degree this year. On Sunday, Chu, her husband, and her son were all at Sunland Park to watch their 3-year-old colt Chitu win the Grade 3 Sunland Derby, earn a $400,000 payday, and haul in enough qualify-ing points to virtually guarantee him a spot in the Kentucky Derby on May 3. Chitu earned a 102 Beyer Speed Figure for his Sunland Derby effort.

“This has been our goal. We love the horses so much,” Chu said. “I got interested a couple of years ago, when I went to the [2010] Kentucky Derby and saw Super Saver win. It was a totally different feeling than with show jumping.”

Chu, who races as Tanma Corp., purchased Chitu for $300,000 a year ago at the Ocala Breed-ers’ Sales Co. March sale of select 2-year-olds in training through bloodstock agent Donato Lanni, who does much of his work in concert with Chu’s trainer, Bob Baffert.

Chu said she chose Baffert after first doing research on Thoroughbred trainers, then flying out from her home in Boston for an in-person meeting.

“When I interviewed Bob, he was very profes-sional,” said Chu, a native of Taiwan. “I thought since he’s in the Hall of Fame, he’d be different personally than he was. He was very kind, very gentle.”

Super Ninety Nine was from the first crop of runners Chu raced. Chitu is from the second crop. Both are trained by Baffert.

“I’m very happy, very appreciative of Bob Baffert,” she said. “I’ve only been involved a very few years.”

Chu said she named Chitu after “one of the best horses in China.”

“We translated the name from Chinese to English. It’s the same pronunciation,” she said.

Chitu’s victory Sunday was his third in four lifetime starts and proved he could handle 1 1/8 miles despite his blocky build and a pedigree that

would suggest that shorter distances would be his preference. His lone loss came in the Grade 2 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita, his first try around two turns, when he was second to Candy Boy, considered one of the elite contenders for both the Santa Anita Derby and the Kentucky Derby.

Both Chitu and Midnight Hawk, who ran second in the Sunland Derby for Baffert, were scheduled to return to Santa Anita.

Commissioner, who finished third, was not scheduled to leave Sunland until Wednesday. If his connections are intent on making the Derby, he would have to make another start to try to glean more points.

The Sunland Derby and the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes, won Saturday by We Miss Artie, were the final races that offered 85 points overall, and 50 points to the winner, under the system used by Churchill Downs to determine the Derby field should more than 20 enter.

Starting this Saturday, with the Grade 2 Loui-siana Derby and the Grade 1 Florida Derby, the point values for Derby preps reach their maxi-mum, with 170 points per race, including 100 to the winner and 50 for second, so the scoreboard-watching will grow the most intense.

Talk about attrition. Since Churchill Downs offered its earliest-ever Kentucky Derby Future Wager pool in late Novem-ber, only two horses have been listed in all four pools toward the 2014 Derby – Cairo Prince and Strong Mandate.

The lineup for the fourth and last 2014 futures pool was released by Churchill Downs on Monday, and the customary turnover from the previous pool is evident. Nine new names are on the roster for Pool 4, which opens Thursday at noon Eastern and closes Saturday at 6 p.m. Both the Grade 1 Florida Derby and Grade 2 Louisi-ana Derby are scheduled to be run Satur-day after the pool closes.

The new horses for Pool 4 are Bobby’s Kitten, Chitu, Hoppertunity, In Trouble, Midnight Hawk, Ride On Curlin, Ring Weekend, Social Inclusion, and We Miss Artie.

Those horses displace the following from Pool 3, which was held Feb. 27 to March 1: Conquest Titan, Honor Code, Indianapolis, Kobe’s Back, Kristo, Noble Moon, Shared Belief, Tamarando, and Top Billing.

Besides Cairo Prince and Strong Mandate, only three other Pool 4 horses – Bobby’s Kitten, In Trouble, and Ride On Curlin – also were separate wagering inter-ests when Pool 1 was offered Nov. 27-30. However, each was omitted from at least one pool in the interim.

Churchill spokesman John Asher, in noting the considerable turnover between pools, pointed out that 24 different horses have won the 25 Derby-points prep races run so far.

For Pool 4, Churchill linemaker Mike Battaglia has listed California Chrome as a 5-1 morning-line favorite, followed by Cairo Prince (6-1), the mutuel field (8-1), Chitu (10-1), Candy Boy (12-1), and Hopper-tunity (12-1).

The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, has closed as the favorite in all three prior pools: 4-5 in Pool 1, 3-2 in Pool 2, and 3-1 in Pool 3.

Handle has slumped noticeably for the Derby futures. Pool 3 handle was $334,326, down 18 percent from the corresponding period in 2013. Pool 2, held Feb. 6-8, was $380,249, down a whopping 39 percent from the corresponding period. And Pool 1, which had never been held in November, was $273,174, the fifth-lowest total since the

futures were first offered in 1999. This is the first year Churchill has had four pools.

As with any parimutuel wager, odds are not locked in until the pool closes. There are no refunds.

This is the 16th year for the future wager. Exacta wagering was added in 2009. In

the case of field horses filling both exacta slots, the next-best finish by a separately listed horse will count toward the winning combination.

Honor Code is off the Kentucky Derby trail and will be sidelined indefinitely after being diagnosed with a slight tear in his right hind upper suspensory, trainer Shug McGaughey said Sunday.

Honor Code was considered one of the lead-ing Derby candidates entering his 3-year-old campaign after winning two of three starts at 2, including the Grade 2 Remsen, his lone setback last season a neck defeat in the Grade 1 Champagne. But Honor Code’s 3-year-old debut was delayed after he missed 10 days of training in January due to a minor ankle issue. He finally returned to the races at Gulfstream Park on March 12, finishing a well-beaten second behind Social Inclusion, who set a track record winning the 1 1/16- mile allowance race by 10 lengths.

Honor Code worked a half-mile in 48.12 seconds Saturday at Gulfstream Park and was slated to have his final Derby prep in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial on April 5.

“He had a little filling in his right hind suspensory this morning and when we checked it out, we discovered he had a slight tear,” said McGaughey, who won the 2013 Kentucky Derby with Orb. “We’ll give him 60 days off and then re-evaluate. The positive side is that he should be able to come back and have a productive career later on.”

Honor Code is the latest in a long list of highly regarded 3-year-olds who have suffered injuries that have ended their Kentucky Derby aspirations, including the second for McGaughey, whose Top Billing is currently recuperating from surgery to repair a cracked cannon bone. Other promi-nent defections include the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner New Year’s Day and reigning 2-year-old champion Shared Belief.

“It just goes to show you what this game can be like, when you see so many of these top 3-year-olds suddenly out of the Derby picture,” said McGaughey. “But that’s part of the gig.”

General a Rod shows poise in final major work for Florida Derby

General a Rod turned down the Gulf-strem Park backstretch shortly after the renovation break Sunday, making his way to the five-furlong marker to begin his final major prep for Saturday’s Grade 1 Florida Derby. But as he reached the pole, the Fountain of Youth Stakes runner-up suddenly found himself with some unex-pected company, as he was joined by a member of the Gamaliel Vazquez stable.

What was scheduled to be a solo and easy five-eighths maintenance work for General a Rod turned into something else altogether. But the good-looking 3-year-old kept his poise, breezing alongside his workmate without incident. After going off his opening eighth in 11.48 seconds, General a Rod came to hand nicely, completing the distance in 1:01.14 while never extended before galloping out six furlongs in 1:14.65.

General a Rod will go postward among the choices in what figures to be a compact lineup for the Florida Derby. Only six 3-year-olds are confirmed for the race, which offers a purse of $1 million and 170 Kentucky Derby qualifying points. The other likely start-ers are Wildcat Red, who narrowly defeated General a Rod in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth, Holy Bull winner Cairo Prince, the undefeated Constitution, Swale Stakes winner Spot, and maiden winner Matador.

“He picked up some unexpected company, but he’s very professional, he handled it really well,” said Mike Maker, who trains General a Rod. “I was a little concerned he might go a little too fast working with the other horse. But like I said, he’s such a profes-sional and a push-button kind of horse that it didn’t affect him at all.”

General a Rod wound up contesting all the pace with Wildcat Red before coming out on the short end of a head decision in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth. In his previous start, he was able to rate just off the leaders before rallying to a head verdict over Wildcat Red in the one-mile Gulfstream Park Derby.

“He’s a very big, good-looking horse with dapples about this big around from head to toe,” Maker said, raising his hands to form a shape the size of a silver dollar. “And he can adapt to any situation he has to. At the moment, I believe he’s the best Derby prospect I’ve had, especially since he handles the dirt so well, better than some of my other ones. He just looks like the whole package to me.”

One potential addition to the Florida Derby lineup, East Hall, worked five furlongs at Gulfstream Monday. With jockey Juan Leyva aboard, East Hall, a son of Graeme Hall trained by Bill Kaplan, breezed in 1:01.98, completing his final quarter with the aid of a strong tailwind in 24.07 seconds before galloping out six panels in 1:15.13.

East Hall is coming off an eighth-place finish in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby. He finished a late-running fourth against the grain of a speed-favoring track, 6 1/2 lengths behind Wildcat Red, in the Fountain of Youth.

“I missed a few days of training with him after the race at Tampa due to a minor issue, but he’s doing fine, and I thought he looked great coming down the stretch this morning,” Kaplan said. “Right now, I’m not committing to anything. If the Florida Derby was to come up a six-horse field, we might decide to run. Our other options for him are the Calder Derby [April 5] or the [Grade 1] Blue Grass [April 12]. I’ll just wait and see what develops over the next couple of days.”

Entries for the Florida Derby and Satur-day’s entire 14-race program will be drawn Wednesday.

We Miss Artie is scheduled to be flown back to south Florida on Tuesday and will not race again before the May 3 Kentucky Derby, for which the Artie Schiller colt earned 50 eligibility points by virtue of his dramatic narrow victory Saturday in the Grade 3 Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park.

Owner Ken Ramsey said Sunday morning from Florida that he will let trainer Todd Pletcher decide when to send We Miss Artie back to Kentucky from the Palm Meadows training center to make final preparations for the Derby.

“I still haven’t wiped the smile off my face,” a joking Ramsey said. “In fact, I’m having a mint julep for breakfast – without the mint.”

We Miss Artie, ridden by John Velazquez, was up in the last jump to win the $518,950 Spiral. Harry’s Holiday was second and Coastline was just another head back in third. All three horses earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 85.

As a side note, the Spiral winner’s share was $282,000 and therefore made Velazquez the first jockey in North American racing

history to surpass the $300-million mile-stone. Into Sunday at Sunland Park, the Hall of Fame jockey has $300,151,477 in purse earnings.

Unfortunately for the co-owners of Harry’s Holiday, the defeat was reminiscent of what happened nearly three years ago in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland when they saw their Twinspired nipped on the wire by Brilliant Speed.

“I’ve been telling everybody who’s been calling and texting this morning that it was the Blue Grass, déjà vu,” said Harvey Diamond, who manages the Skychai Racing partnership that co-owns Harry’s Holiday with Terry Raymond. “Those are two pretty tough ones.”

Harry’s Holiday, claimed for $30,000 from his career debut at Churchill Downs in September, was not an original Triple Crown nominee, but the owners paid a $6,000 late fee before the Saturday night deadline to make the colt eligible, said Diamond.

Harry’s Holiday has been based at Turf-way since he won the 96 Rock Stakes by eight lengths on Feb. 1 but will move soon to the Trackside training facility in Louisville,

where trainer Mike Maker will be regroup-ing his huge stable over the next few weeks.

Harry’s Holiday earned 20 Derby points and would seem to have a spot in the 20-horse starting gate, but whether the colt will race one more time before the Derby has yet to be decided, said Diamond. “We’ll give that a little time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mark Casse, trainer of Coast-line, said he was very pleased with how the son of Speightstown ran and that he will consider the Blue Grass, Grade 3 Lexington Stakes, or Grade 3 Derby Trial Stakes for a next start.

The Spiral, sponsored for the second year by Horseshoe Casino Cincinnati, was run under mostly clear skies and temperatures in the 40s. An official attendance count was not released by Turfway, although the huge VIP tent and much of the grandstand were filled as usual with spring revelers.

Trainer Wayne Catalano said Aurelia’s Belle, winner of the Grade 3 Bourbonette Stakes on Saturday at Turfway, will make her next start in the May 2 Kentucky Oaks. Aurelia’s Belle, owned by James F. Miller, earned 50 points toward the Oaks.

John engelhardt/Pat lang PhotograPhy We Miss Artie rallied outside of Coastline and Harry’s Holiday to score a nose victory on Saturday in the Spiral Stakes at Turfway.

Freshman sires part of market comebackBy Joe Nevills

The economic conditions facing fresh-man sires of 2014 when they first entered the breeding shed in 2011 weren’t pretty.

The bloodstock market was in the midst of a deep tailspin. Yearling prices had hit rock bottom the previous year, and the number of mares being sent to the breeding shed was falling precipitously – down 11 percent from 2009 to 2010. At the end of the 2011 breeding season, the population of mares bred in North America had fallen another 10 percent.

Even at the breed’s highest levels, it was far from an ideal market for a young stallion

to get his start. Then, something interesting happened.

Foals from the first crops of those stallions were front and center during the auction market’s resurgence, first as weanlings in 2012, then as yearlings during the often-record-setting sales of 2013. Now 2-year-olds, the freshman-sired runners are in the midst of proving themselves at auction one more time before their value is measured not in the auction ring but on the track.

“It’s just very exciting,” said Bret Jones of Airdrie Stud, which is represented by fresh-man sire Majesticperfection in 2014. “The process of raising horses doesn’t happen overnight. You enter into a conversation

to try and buy the horse, you get the horse bought, the next year you’re trying to get mares for your stallion, the next year you’re getting the foals, the year after that you’re hoping they sell well as yearlings, and now in year five, they’re hitting the racetrack.

“It’s a very long process, but you’re think-ing about this day from the second you enter into talks to get the stallion in the first place. You’re trying to find a stallion that at the end of the day will get you fast racehorses, and I think we found one.”

Bill Farish of Lane’s End said breeders were still attracted to first-year stallions during the industry’s recent down years, with stallions in their second to fourth

seasons bearing the brunt of the impact before their foals could prove themselves on the racetrack.

Lane’s End has a pair of stallions whose first runners will hit the track in 2014 – Grade 1 winners Quality Road and Discreetly Mine. In determining their success as progenitors of racehorses, Farish said patience is key.

“It’s definitely an anxious time, but really with both of these sires, we’re not going to have any definitive answers anytime soon,” Farish said. “The market tends to be pretty fickle, and if you’re not seeing 2-year-old results midway through the summer, people start to panic, but we’ve seen over the years that the answer doesn’t come for a while. We’ve had numerous stallions that appeared to be struggling early on and came on in a big way later in their careers. Smart Strike’s one that really comes to mind, and even Kingmambo went through a stretch where people were questioning him, and he just came on like crazy.”

Bernie Sams of Claiborne Farm said that starting its rookie sire Blame in the midst of an industry swoon was unlikely to have made a drastic impact on the size or qual-ity of the sire’s first book of mares, but he said the state of the market did require espe-cially careful stallion management.

“We were able to pick and choose through the mares that we wanted when he retired, so really, the only thing that might have been different for Blame had the economy been different at the time would have been the stud fee,” Sams said. “But I know with [farm owner] Seth [Hancock] and Claiborne, the mindset’s always to be fair and set a fee that’ll be consistent all four years to where you don’t have to adjust the fee drastically, because once you start dropping one, it just becomes a free fall.”

Sams said Blame’s first foals have been well received throughout their development and are often uniform in their appearance – bearing a similar bone structure and bay color as their sire. Blame, an 8-year-old son of Arch, stands the 2014 season for a stud fee of $30,000. He has made the biggest early headlines among the aforementioned sires as this spring’s juvenile sale season kicks into high gear, with a $425,000 purchase at the recent record-setting Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. select March auction.

“All early indications so far have been good from the 2-year-old guys in Florida,

and we’ve gotten good reports out of South Carolina, so I would hope they’ll run and run well,” Sams said. “So far, he hasn’t done anything wrong. Obviously, you never know, but it’s very exciting.”

Blame was one of three first-year stallions to stand for a class-high $35,000 in 2011; the others were Quality Road and Lookin At Lucky of Ashford Stud.

Farish said both Quality Road and Discreetly Mine received strong support from breeders in their first year at stud, and that Florida-based trainers have spoken well of the foals as juveniles. Quality Road, an 8-year-old son of Elusive Quality, stands for $25,000 in 2014, while the 7-year-old Mineshaft horse Discreetly Mine stands for $10,000.

“The Quality Roads tend to have a little more scope to them and look like they could

go a little bit farther than the Discreetly Mines, but that wouldn’t surprise you given how they both ran and how they’re both made,” Farish said. “The Quality Roads do tend to look a little bit more like him, a little more stretchy and classic-looking, where the Discreetly Mines are a little more compact and might be a little quicker.”

Majesticperfection, an 8-year-old son of Harlan’s Holiday best known for winning the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Handicap in 2010, stands for $10,000.

“He’s given us every reason to have very high expectations,” Jones said. “We really thought he was the best sprinter in the country the year he was running. He was also an exceptionally good-looking horse, and thankfully, he’s passed those good looks on to his foals. We couldn’t be higher on his chances.”
