The EUROTRANS-BIO initiative (ETB)EUROTRANS-BIO initiative (ETB) stems from the will of European member states and regions to work together in order to support trans-support trans-national R&D private/private and private/public co-operations national R&D private/private and private/public co-operations between companies, especially SMEs, and academic labs by between companies, especially SMEs, and academic labs by coordinating their national or regional public funding programscoordinating their national or regional public funding programs.

The strategic objective of the 6th Transnational EUROTRANSBIO Call for 6th Transnational EUROTRANSBIO Call for Proposals Proposals is to foster the competitive capacity Europe’s biotechnologybiotechnology industry by supporting the research intensive SMEs and their strategic research intensive SMEs and their strategic partnershipspartnerships. The 6th ETB call is a generic call including all fields of biotechnology.

The 6th ETB call for transnational proposals opened on October 1st, 2010. Deadline for submission is February 1st, 2011February 1st, 2011.

From 2004 to 2010 ETB has launched five joint calls, thereby successfully coordinating the programs of up to twelve ETB partners, and recommended 99 cooperative R&D&I projects for funding.

A total of € 174 Mio of have been moved for transnational cooperation.

244 SMEs together with 78 academic partners and 5 large industries are currently benefiting or have benefited from ETB funding to carry out their transnational projects.

The project scopes spanned from the most demanded sector HealthHealth (red biotech, 83%) to Agro-FoodAgro-Food (green biotech, 10%) to grey biotech grey biotech (6%) and other sectors as marine marine (blue) and white biotech white biotech (1%).

COMPOSITION OF CONSORTIA: COMPOSITION OF CONSORTIA: ETB criteria for an eligible consortium are the following:

- The consortium consists of at least two SMEs from two different at least two SMEs from two different countries participating in the callcountries participating in the call. Cooperation between two or more regions of one single country is not considered to be transnational. However, inter-regional partnerships may apply together with an additional SME partner from another country. There is no upper limit on consortium size.- The consortium must be balanced between consortium partners. - The contribution of one country to the collaborative project must not The contribution of one country to the collaborative project must not exceed 70% of the total project costs exceed 70% of the total project costs in order to ensure balanced transnational partnerships.- A minimum of 50% of the total project costs must be budgeted for A minimum of 50% of the total project costs must be budgeted for SME SME partners within the consortium.- Academic research groups or other public/private research Academic research groups or other public/private research organisations as well as large companies can join the consortia organisations as well as large companies can join the consortia provided there is also a SME from the same ETB programme provided there is also a SME from the same ETB programme participantparticipant. Specific conditionsfor the funding of Research Organisations and Large Companies may apply (depending on the national / regional funding programmes).

BREEN PROJECTBREEN PROJECT

In this context, we will work on the Breen Project; this project focuses on Sustainability and AquacultureSustainability and Aquaculture:

It aims to develop the BREEN Method (Breeded in Green) to unite these two concepts - aquaculture and sustainability - all in one, in order to accomplish this activity and thereby acquiring a commitment of complete equilibrium with nature and the environment.

SUSTAINABLE AQUACTULTURESUSTAINABLE AQUACTULTURE

Currently, there have been several attempts to achieve total sustainability in farming techniques, but there are a number of factors that impede this goal. The main obstacles in obtaining total sustainability in aquaculture are energy management energy management and feedmill for the vast feedmill for the vast majority of speciesmajority of species.

MAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECTMAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECT

RENEWABLE ENERGY:RENEWABLE ENERGY:

The largest energy consumption in aquacultural production takes place in the electrical components of the pumping system. In an open system where water is continuosly extracted, the pump channels water from the source to the main reservoirs or tanks and residual water is returned to the source after use.

Water used in this fashion is used only once and requires elevated levels of water and electrical resources. On the other hand, in a recirculatory system, the water is recycled, time and time again. Once the water is used, the water is filtered and purified, ready to be reintroduced into the breeding system. A renewable water system works without disparaging a single drop of water.

A renewable water pumping system on a small to medium-sized scale optimises the energetic consumptions if installations are properly designed, achieving maximum cost savings. The water temperature control is also a factor to take into account for efficient energy management.

There are other energy alternatives which may be used to manage water temperature and electric consumption. Renewable energies such as geothermics, solar, wind or photocellular energy can be a good solution for sustainable energetic breeding.

… … MAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECTMAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECT

BALANCED FEED – AFA (Aquaculture for Aquaculture Concept) FISH BALANCED FEED – AFA (Aquaculture for Aquaculture Concept) FISH FOOD:FOOD:

Nowadays feedmill is processed containing less fish protein and even feed without protein, in an attempt to find a solution to the futile viability of the current feeding system in aquaculture. Fish proteins are substituted by vegetable proteins. Vegetable proteins are obtained in soy, cereals, etc. without affecting the marine food chain.

The challenge we face is that carnivorous fish are suffering from malnutrition with this food, which - although it might be enough to keep the breeding species alive - it does not constitute a balanced diet for growth and development of the species. Alterations may occur in size, weight, reproduction, high mortality rates in initial stages, etc.

Fish protein, to a greater or lesser extent, is indispensable for a healthy diet for the vast majority of fish, especially in their developing stages.

AFA Fishfood is the only feedmill on the market that contains fish protein, exclusively from breeded fish.

AFA Fishfood is the 100% sustainable feedmill for carnivorous fish since it does not use any commercial fish components during any of the stages of production.

… … MAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECTMAIN CONCEPTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY BREEN PROJECT

AQUAPONICS:AQUAPONICS:

In order to renew water supply continuously in a controlled environment of recirculation, you need to constantly purify and clean the water. Fish generate waste through their excrement, etc. in the form of amonia (NH4) which dissolves in water. This amonia (NH4) is highly contaminating and damaging to fish themselves. For that reason, they need to be eliminated.

Elimination of Nitrates from WaterElimination of Nitrates from Water

Nitrates are the principal elements of plants. Plants are capable of converting inorganic elements into organic material. They feed off of nitrates to grow. In traditional agriculture, plants absorb these nitrates from the dirt. The dirt provides them with the necessary grip they need to grow and develop - but nitrates are essential for development.

Aquaponics grow land plants without dirt. Plants only need a small amount of dirt to grow and develop. Then, water currents, rich in nitrates originating from breeded fish, are generated to provide them with the necessary nutrients to grow and develop.

Through Aquaponics, water is purified from the aquacultural by products thanks to the absorption of nitrates by plants and it dissolves again in breeding tanks. In only one step, water is purified and plants are cultivated. Is ideal for growing all types of fresh vegetables, aromatic and medicinal plants.
