Oh, by the way, This week-end, we welcome three (3) of our faith-family as they
prepare for their First Holy Communion. Pictures are posted in the vestibule. Please pray with and for them as they take another step in their faith journey to the Kingdom.

As we journey through the blessed Season of Lent, there is the need to seek
God’s forgiveness for our turning away from Him. Listed below is the schedule for
seeking forgiveness within our Deanery. Please schedule a time for your family to
celebrate this Sacrament. First, however, a brief examination of what this Sacrament
is. Why? Origins? Why tell our sins to a priest? Why different names through the
centuries? A brief Reader’s Digest version:
Reconciliation Penance Confession What is the difference between Confession, Penance and Reconciliation?
These three names are commonly used interchangeably for the Sacrament in which sins are
forgiven.
The Sacrament is called “Confession” because the penitent makes a verbal confession of his or
her particular sins.
It is called “Penance” from another element of the Sacrament – the good action/prayer the priest
asks the penitent to perform/pray as a token of his or her sincerity, and as a way to bring some good
into the world in reparation for the sin committed.
And finally “Reconciliation” refers to the final effect of the Sacrament: the penitent is
reconciled with God and the Church.
What is the origin of this Sacrament? It is no exaggeration to say that the very reason that Jesus Christ came into the world
was for reconciliation: to reconcile us to the Father and to one another. The very first message in the New Testament, on the lips of John the Baptist, was: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!” (Matthew 3:2) After the death of John the Baptist, this message was taken up by the Lord Jesus. During His life on earth, the Lord forgave the sins of various people He encountered. And after His Resurrection, he told His Apostles to preach repentance for the forgiveness of sins in His name to all the nations. (Luke 24:47)
Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest? This is founded on the clear instruction of the Lord. After His Resurrection, the Lord
appeared to His Apostles, breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” (John 20:22-23)
Reconciliation Leads to Holiness
The beauty of the sacrament of Reconciliation is that whenever you confess your sins to the best of your ability and the best of your memory — when you don’t hold anything back and you are truly sorry and you have a firm purpose of amendment — you always leave the confessional with that confident assurance of God’s complete forgiveness.
Many people worry unnecessarily about the sins they might have truly forgotten in their Confession. But the human mind is not like a computer that can access all the data it needs at just the right moment. Our memories are dimmed with our fallen human nature. When you’ve
made a good Confession, all your sins are forgiven, so long as you have a contrite heart. God sees the interior of the heart. And if later you should remember some sin that you have forgotten to confess, just bring it up in your next Confession. It’s as simple as that.

Sundays, 1:30 p.m., St. Joseph
With St. Francis as part of our Cluster, I am a member of the Westside ministerial
association. Multiple services are planned for the various churches around Francesville. Looking
ahead, St. Francis will host the evening of Wednesday, 10 April. We begin with a soup and bread
supper (thanks to the ladies for providing multiple delicious soups
and breads) at 6:15 p.m. followed by a Catholic prayer service at
7:00 p.m. Because this is an ecumenical gathering, each church
follows a liturgical rite proper to their faith tradition. None of the
services have inter-communion. What I usually do is to pray the
Way of the Cross (there are a number of options available!). The
participation is great. Other churches don’t have such a tradition.
This is open to all. Mark your calendar. Come and pray with us!
Rachel is one a few selected persons from our Local Church to attend a Diocesan workshop: Catholic Standards for Excellence which is led by the Leadership Roundtable. This is a fully funded program by the Lily Foundation (you’ve heard of that Foundation). As such, the Business Office will be closed Monday and Tuesday as she will be attending a two-day overnight diocesan workshop. Please understand: the Business Office is for Cluster Business. The Rectory is the rectory, I am still here.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch….fr. K
