WHEN IMET(II) JERRY LEE LEWIS

I'VE been a way-out Jerry Lee Lewisfan for over five years now. One of

the first questions I asked my wife, Fay,when I first met her, was, " Do youdig Jerry Lee Lewis ?" She was the firstgirl l'd met who did so. I became veryinterested in her. At the time she alsoliked Cliff Richard, but soon forgot himafter she heard my Jerry Lee discs.

We have called our little boy JerryLee Louis, a thing we decided to dowhile we were courting.

When Jerry Lee arrived for hisBritish tour, we just couldn't containourselves, and booked as many shows-front-row seats-as we could afford.

We first met Jerry Lee at Birming-ham Town Hall. Fay was first totouch hint, and after The 4.0.1 given hima big kiss, I couldn't believe I wasshaking hands with the "Shaker" himself.After the shock of meeting our idol,Fay showed him our son's birth cer-tificate. He was really delighted andknocked out, and signed the certificate"Best of love and luck, Jerry Lee Lewis."

Some reporters were in the dressingroom and took photographs of us andJerry Lee. I must say we felt likemillionaires.

Jerry Lee bought us some drinks andkept saying how much he appreciatedwhat we had done. All this must havebeen very touching for Jerry Lee, as

his own little son, Steve All, had diedso tragically only a few days before.

While we were backstage, Jerry keptus all raving by singing hits of hisgreat songs. He was always singingabout something, always seemed happyand made us both feel really at home.

BUDDY BUDDY

I HAVE long thought that British singers were put to shame by theirAmerican counterparts, but since listen-ing to Buddy Britten and the Regents Ihave changed my mind. They have adistinctive sound and do not rely oncopying Americans.

Although Buddy bears a very strikingresemblance to the late Buddy Holly, itis to his credit that he doesn't try tosound like the American. ALL THIS talk about a boom inrhythm 'n' blues-it's a wonder the

dee-jays don't do more to plug U.S.artists such as Fats Domino. He's beenabsent from Hitsville this side of theAtlantic for two years, yet all his singlesare as good, and better than his earliermaterial. All first-rate r and b. Anyway, whatabout the American artists who havecovered British songs? CURRENTLY climbing the chartsis the Vernons Girls offering

"You Know What I mean". Butthe disc has already been a hit forthe girls via the top side "LoverPlease" whit!' just made the TopTwenty many weeks back. And nowit seems it's the flip that's getting allthe plays and attention.

Even to the extent of forgettingabout a new release by the trio,"The Loco -Motion" which hasn'tshown up anywhere yet.

The Vernons' Girls aren't the firstto have this happen to them. A fewmonths back in the States SamCooke's "Having A Party" wasriding high. But when it droppedout, it was the gospelish "Bring It OnHome To Me" that leapt up intothe Top Twenty and is now evenhigher than the top side reached.

And the disc looks like selling amillion in the States alone. . . .

Originally flip sides were justpressed to fill the gap. But nowmany big name artists take as muchtrouble over side two as they do overside one. People like Elvis, Cliffand Connie Francis are noted forgood double headers.

CLIFF N' FATSIn fact, it was the flip side that got

Cliff started. Originally the recordcompany intended him to have"Schoolboy Crush", an Americansong, on the top side. But extensiveradio plays and huge advance orderson the flip made it the top side.And composer "Sammy" Samwellhad his first hit with "Move It"-the number he penned on top of abus.

WE MEANpentd to Fats Domino. His "I'mReady" disc had made it big in theStates but didn't mean much here.Then Dee -Jays started playing theflip, a number called "Margie" theold standard given the Fats treat-ment. It made the Top Twenty andpaved the way for more Domino hitsin this country.

For Duane Eddy, "Juke Box Jury"gave him his break. Although healready had several hits he wasn'treally established when Londonrecords issued "Yep" which wasdoing big business in the States.

But on "JBJ" it was the flipsidethat was played. A number called"Peter Gunn", the theme to a seriesthat hadn't been shown over here.And had also been recorded byvarious artists.

The disc "Peter Gunn" leapt tonumber eight in the charts in thefirst week purely due to this plug.And London record had hastily toalter their plugging schedule to fitthe number in.

So it seems that it's worth whilenot to totally ignore side two afterall. After all, a disc can sell twiceas many copies that way. You knowwhat I mean ...

thewall of his small room in London'sSavoy Hotel, dressed in crumpledlounging slacks, open shirt, thinksweater. . . This was the first viewof one of the pop world's most suc-cessful disc artists.

A half -empty teapot on a nearbytable revealed that he was getting toknow the British habit of afternoontea.

A Few sheets of manuscript-partlyscribbled upon - showed that, as befitsa singer who composes most of his ownmaterial, he was finding time to compose.

He confessed tiredness owing to ahectic schedule-" barely had time totake a bath," he drawled. His bathroomwas about as big as his bedroom.

"Now what was it you wanted toknow ? " he asked.

Your trademark on discsis falsetto singing. Howdid this evolve?

"I guess it really just came out. Ihad the melody to `Runaway'-whichturned out very lucky for me, my big-gest hit-and this falsetto bit justseemed to fit the song.

"A lot of folk ask me if there is anystrain in singing this way, but I find iteasy. I've really been singing this wayall the time.

MUSITRONDo you think the falsettointerlude helped get therecord into the charts?

"Not entirely. I think it has a prettygood melody too. So does LawrenceWelk (the American society orchestraleader, whose trademark is quiet `cham-pagne music') because he recorded it onone of his albums.

"And he isn't a beat group leader, ishe ?"

Still talking about"Runaway", what was theweird instrument used inthe backing? An organ?

No, not quite. It's a home-made in-vention, a hand -made organ, built byMaximilian, who supervised the session.

"He calls it a musitron.' I liked it.It was kind of a nutty sound. It's onlyabout seven or eight inches wide andtwo feet long, with a set of controls.

"We used it on 'Hey Little Girl' aswell, although you perhaps wouldn'trealise it because it has such a widerange of controls.

"I like off beat sounds. We used akazzoo on ` So Long Baby.' "

How many has "Runaway"sold?

"Up to the present, about two and ahalf million. It's still selling about 1,000a week somewhere. It was a big one allover-No. I in Japan and suchlike."

HURRICANESDo Johnny and theHurricanes back you? Onmost discs it sounds a lotlike their noise.

"No. A lot of people have asked methis-them belonging to the same recordcompany and all. But it isn't so. I usedrums, piano, myself on guitar and bassand organ, or musitron,' whereas TheHurricanes use a saxophone.

" We do the arrangements and thensend them to New York, and they pickthe musicians.

"I don't know how this Johnny andThe Hurricanes thing got started, but itisn't so."

Considering you have hadso many hits and been soconsistent with them, weknown precious little aboutyour private life, etc.,over here. Do you like tokeep it to yourself!

"I don't think so. Don't forget, I'veonly been in show business as a name

for about one and a half years. Andduring that time I've kept pretty busy,recording all the time.

"Maybe people's haven't had time toget to know me.

"I'm fairly ordinary, I guess. Bornin Grand Rapids, Michigan, always beeninterested in playing guitar. Must havebeen about 15 when I started to learn.

"Sport I like. I enjoy playing golf,football. I used to play American foot-ball regularly. Say I was really dis-appointed last week. I wanted to goand see your Arsenal play that Spanishteam, Real Madrid.

"But I couldn't get any tickets, so Imissed out. I must see some Englishfootball though.

"I also like baseball and golf. Golfis the main thing. I intend to takeDion out and show him how to playthis week.

"Back home I play with friends likeBobby Vee and Brian Hyland-whenwe've got the time."

Do you have much timeto spare?

"Not really. It's a hectic business.

DEL SHANNON: been in show business for only one and a half years and very successful. He has a tour of Japan-"Runaway'topped the charts there-the Far East and Australia lined up for the near future. He composes on his guitar which he prefers

A tour like this-for about three weeksin one country with short travelling dis-tances-is really great. It's also a rarity.

"And when it's Britain, well it's evenbetter. I count Britain as the secondmost important market as regardsrecords.

"Another thing I want to get to seewhile I'm here is that movie 'It's Trad,

Dad.' I did a slot for it in the Stateswithout knowing much about the film.

"And it hasn't been released inAmerica yet, so I haven't been able tosee it. I'll keep my eyes open for iton tour."You got your first realbreak in show businessduring the time you were

manager to such hit names asHelen Shapiro, Cliff Richard, TheShadows and Frank Ifield, willsoon be on a world tour . . . look-ing around for markets and ideas.

But don't get the idea that this meanswe will be getting the intriguingprospect of Cliff singing his latesthit in Javanese, Helen in Hindu-stani, or Ifield in Aborigine.

Says Norrie on the question of foreignlanguage discs by British artists: " Idon't think it would be worth it. Doyou know there are 369 languages inIndia alone ?

"So this kind of record would hardlybe commercially worthwhile there-or in any other foreign language mar-ket outside of the European ones.

BY NORRIE PARAMOR"For one thing, to release a hit disc in

another language isn't just a case ofdubbing a new vocal track on to theoriginal arrangement-a very simpleoperation.

"No, the Musicians' Union says we haveto turn in a complete and separaterecording. Do the whole sessionagain, in fact ... and this puts up thecosts considerably.

"But apart from anything else, outsideof the big European countries -mainly Germany and France-themarket is too small to warrant indi-vidual records.

"In any case, we do very nicely outthere as it is ; Helen Shapiro is verypopular in Japan, and Cliff's fameisn't only confined to Britain. Like-wise The Shadows, except, of course,there is no language problem here."

Cliff has, in fact, recorded in Frenchalready. Helen has done the samething and also has discs in Germanreleased.

Norrie, who leaves today (Thursday),will be away for six weeks, visitingBombay, Singapore, Hong Kong,Tokyo, Sydney, Wellington, Nandi,Honolulu, Los Angeles, New York,Las Vegas and Toronto.

In Toronto he presents his own tele-vision show, with Helen Shapiro ashis guest star.

SIXTEENHelen will be sixteen by then, and I

asked Norrie-closely connected withher career so far-to look into thefuture.

What will Helen be doing at 21 ?He told me: "One thing, she'll be a

very wealthy young lady."I also think she'll be well established

as a jazz singer by 1967."But the biggest push forward in her

career I think will come from films.I think by this time her film career-started off by appearances in Trad,Dad' and 'Play It Cool'-will be firmlyestablished."

And to help it along more than some-what, Norrie, along with writers PeterMyers and Ronnie Cass the teamwhich wrote Cliff Richard's " TheYoung Ones "-have already mappedout the synopsis of a like starringpicture for Miss Shapiro.

"That was just before 'Runaway,'" hefinished.

REMINISCINGTHE FIRST new side to come from

Coral with the name BUDDYHOLLY on the label moves to numbertwenty-one on the charts this week. Andlooks like it will move higher. Looks infact like the biggest Holly side since"Baby I Don't Care" reached numberfourteen in the charts well over a yearago.

Yet all Holly's discs have sold well.before and after that fateful night ofFebruary 3, 1959. A group of entertainershad played before thousands of cheeringkids and were preparing to leave the SurfBalroom, Clear Lake, in Iowa.

The bus had broken down, but therewas an offer to take three of them on tothe next date by 'plane. They spun coinsto see who would ride in the ten-yearold Beach Bonanza. When Ritchie Valenswon he laughed : "Gee! This is the firsttime I've ever won anything".

TRAGEDYThe others were Buddy Holly, and the

Big Bopper. At last the 'plane moved off,fighting the wind and the snow at 1.00in the morning, and the men in the con-trol tower watched the tail light as itrose. And then fell.

They found what they hoped theywould not find next morning, amidstsnow-covered cornfields next to a wirefence. The men who found the wreckageknew it would be a special tragedy, thatstruck young America and Britain to theheart.

But for millions of fans everywherethere were still the discs to carry on thename.

And Buddy Holly fans will be reminis-cing, long after the disc of the samename is no longer in the charts.

DION said: "I'm known by a millionpeople, record fans, back home in

the States".He added very quickly: "But I'm

also unknown by a million peopleover there.

"That's the way the music scene inAmerica goes. The difference betweenteenagers and adults is amazing.Almost two different markets.

"Years ago, you were popular andEVERYBODY knew who you were,everybody who bought records. Now thegap is enormous And you have tocapture the adult market.

"I'm trying to do it slowly but surely.To make the transition it means workingin night clubs, doing national televisionprogrammes and getting good material.

"There's a danger, of course, but ifyou are careful you don't grow awayfrom the teenagers. They grow withyou.

BOND"I have a great bond with teenagers.

I'm only 22 myself and I'm not smugenough to i magine that they haven'tmatured-just as I have. When I lookout over an adult night club audienceI like to think that they've learned tounderstand me the way they have theirown children ... "

It's Dion's second visit to Britain. Hefeels at home here now. But he is alsoaware of the tremendous gulf thatseparates the British and American musicbusinesses.

For instance-something that wouldn'thappen here-Dion found out a greatdeal about Dion when he parted fromhis gold award winning backing groupthe Belmonts. ("No regrets-on eitherside").

His first solo disc "Lonely Teenager"did extremelly well enough for Dion tobuy an apartment and move his familyout of the New York Bronx district, aThunderbird car (standard status symbolof an American record star), a goldwristwatch for his manager, three tux-edos, an abstract painting, several elasticsided Italian shoes (Dion and Fabianare two stars who dig this brand offootwear), seven suits and ten pairs oftrousers.

He also accepted offers for concertsand tours and personal appearances.

In fact he might have been forgivenfor thinking himself a teen idol andhaving it made.

Except he noticed one thing . . .

In New York, in his home district,he was the centre of it all. Teenagersfollowed him everywhere, grabbed himon the pavements for autographs andbeseiged his home.

But when he was in Hollywood, hefelt - in his own words - 'just anothertourist.'

Added Dion : "But it Rick Nelsonhad strolled by then there would havebeen a riot. You don't zoom right tothe top with one big bit record thesedays.

"In America the market is too vast."

DRAMABack in 1961 Dion started taking

drama lessons with an eye towardsthe future. He wanted to get into films.On the face of it this early applicationhas paid off because Dion has nowappeared in three motion pictures.

Dion however views it all differently."I don't think you could call them film

parts. I just did a couple of numbers

which werehe told me.

" Teenage Millionaire " and " Don'tKnock The Twist" were two films inwhich he appeared that DON'T giveDion the idea that he's a movie star.

He says: "Half the time you reallydon't know what is going on, the workis so fast and at such a high pressure.'Don't Knock The Twist' for examplewas made, complete and finished, inunder 16 days by Hollywood director,Sam Katzman, who has a reputation forthis kind of speed.

"I don't think I really like workingin this way.

"But I will tell you something. Iappeared on your television show,`Thank Your Lucky Stars' last weekand I'm knocked out about it all.The producer Philip Jones reallytakes care of you and knows how toput you and your record across.

"I think he took more trouble overthis television appearance than they tookover the whole 'Don't Knock The Twist'film."

But Dion is expecting his new film,"Ten Girls Ago" to revive his faith infilms and Dion in films in particular.Although he states: "If I had to explainthe story I'd go out of my mind.

"It stars two great old time comedians,Buster Keaton and Eddie Foy Jr. I singthree songs in the movie, not rock androll, just swinging things.

"This could do it."Dion is very keen on photography,

but don't expect to see him at work onBritain's ancient monuments.

He really likes to photograph faces."Although I have never taken anyphotographs of my fans," he recalled.

"Photography helps me to relax, andin this business that's very important.

"More important, though, is that ittakes me away from show business.And that is important."

LOT of people believe that thefirst disc to sell a million was

"Rock Around the Clock", and thatbefore 1955 when the big beat be-gan to take over, discs sold onlyin hundreds.

But they didn't. As many discs weresold before 1955 as since.

There were plenty of favourites, thenas now, and one of them was a MissPatti Page. Classified, then as now,as a Country and Western singer shehas got Seven Gold Discs on hermantelshelf.

Her last gold disc was gained in 1956when she sold a million of "AlleghenyMoon".

Her first was of course "TennesseeWaltz" which sold four million. Inbetween there was "Doggie In TheWindow", "Mockingbird Hill", "IWent To Your Wedding", "CrossOver The Bridge", and "ChangingPartners".

And that's not a bad list for a pre-rock'n'roller. The total of those is tenmillion, plus many many more fromher other discs which have just failedto reach the six figure mark.

All were on Mercury, the disc companyshe is leaving this week. Her new com-pany is US Columbia, released hereas CBS.

Her contract is negotiated by Jack Raelthe man who discovered Patti singingon a local radio station in Tulsa. Hername, Clara Ann Fowler had alreadybeen changed to Patti Page by thePage Milk Company, her radio spon-sor. Rael met Patti at the radio station,and a few days later brought her toChicago for night club work.

After six months work in Chi., Pattiwas signed by Mercury records. Andthe rest is recording history. She wasdubbed "the singing rage", and thegirl from a family of 13 became oneof the most popular singers in theStates.

Later Patti married dance directorCharles O'Curran and became one ofthe most prolific clothes buyers in theentertainment business.

She has nearly two hundred pairs ofshoes, nearly ten fur coats, three hun-dred dresses, and thirty five gowns. Itmakes up she says for her childhood,when she had to go without toomuch, and wore hand -downs from hermany older sisters.

hat recently she has started breakingthrough on the film scene. Her latestrelease, "Dondi" was taken from herfilm of the same name, and beforethat she starred with Burt Lancaster in"Elmer Gantry".

That, in a nutshell is the career of PattiPage. "Tennessee Waltz" still sets overfive thousand copies every month andwill probably continue so while peoplestill waltz.

But Patti still remembers the Page MilkCompany from Tulsa. If she ever sawthe slogans put out by the Milk Mar-keting Board, they would probablymean more to the girl with the Chero-kee inheritance, than to the rest of us.

THE 'TEMPERANCE 7' PICK UP SOME CLEANLATEST single of the Temperance

Seven (above) is "Runnin' Wild'-adifferent sort of single to their usualoutput. But it is NOT the first timethe group have recorded it. The lasttime was in Rome. And such a storyit was that it could only have hap-pened to the Temperance Seven.

Let leader Brian Innes take up thestory:

"We were in Rome for a film pro-duction called 'Toto By Night'. Totois the famous Italian comedian andthe idea of the production is tointroduce famous cabaret acts fromall over the world.

"We turned up on the set, wearingour usual garb. As we ran through thenumber, one of the film executives toldus that while our clothing would be nodoubt considered striking and eccentricin England it was the sort of clothingthat would be taken for granted, asworn by musicians on the Continent.

"This, you can imagine, set us backon our heels. So we enquired what, pre-

cisely, they thought would be consideredeccentric garb for the Continent.

"We should not be surprised at theirreply.

"'You will dress as Franciscan monks,'said the executive. 'That will be con-sidered eccentric enough.' "

So . . . the Temperance Seven madetheir film appearance, playing "Runnin'Wild", wearing the white habits of theFranciscan Monks. At the rear of thecabaret stage was a monastery gate.By the side of it, a bell-a bell whichwas solemnly tolled, on arrival, by PaulMcDowell, the whisperer himself.

This, apparently, went down bomb -

like with Italian audiences.Said Brian Innes: "We were a

trifle worried, indeed perturbed, in theearly stages for we felt we might begiving offence to somebody in that reli-gious order. However, we were assuredthat all would be well.

"It was an experience, though, I cantell you. After all, we had been led tobelieve that our usual style of dress wasoriginal enough."

Meanwhile, the Temps are in themiddle of a series of dates throughoutthe country.

Said Brian : "Captain Cephas Howardcontrived several splendid ideas to addto the effectiveness of our stage act atBristol last week. For example, therewas a shower of balloons flying on atvarious stages. That helps, visually. Andduring our 'Gaumont-British' finale, thestage is festooned with Union Jacks.All very patriotic and rather dramatic."

Paul McDowell, incidentally, stillmakes his entrance through a trap-door

HABITSin the stage. Originally, at the LondonPalladium, he was paid danger -moneyfor this feat. Now the money has beenstopped.

Following a week at Liverpool Empire,and a few "loose" dates of one-nighters,the gentlemen of the Temperance Sevenwill be undertaking their second tour ofScotland.

Brian Innes: "The last time we werethere was for a very short visit and wewere very successful. In fact, all themembers of the band enjoyed it verymuch.

"On this second visit, we will be inthe middle of the game season, so I

shouldn't be surprised it we are outthere, stalking on the moors. The lads

are very fond of stalking . . . especiallyon the moors."

Footnote: According to EMI, salesof "Runnin' Wild" are extremely goodand the disc could whip the Temps backinto the charts.

HALEY DRUMMERBILL HALEY and the Comets have

another new drummer - havinglost Dave Bates to the U.S. Army,the second percussion man from thegroup to be enlisted inside ninemonths.

New man is Dave Holly. He comesfrom Philadelphia, is 24 and married,with one son. Dave also does a comedyroutine with the group and is a vocalist.His first date with the Comets was atthe El Cortex night club in Las Vegas.

Meanwhile, the Comets are hoping fora ballroom tour in January next year-and the George Cooper Organization istrying to work out details in London.

BUZZ CLIFFORD WANTS TO BE QUIETBUZZ CLIFFORD is known, almost

exclusively, in Britain by a bit ofa roar -up called "Baby Sittin'Boogie", and those who didn't digBuzz too much at least had thegimmick -value of a baby cryingaway like mad.

Now Buzz was grateful for that disc.It whipped up his earning capacityin the States and it led to demandsfor his services from Britain andelsewhere.

But I got a distinct feeling, when chattingto Buzz, that he is no longer enchantedwith "Baby Sittin' Boogie". "I stillsing it .. . yes", he said. "But that'sonly because I get requests for it.

"Know what I want to be? A balladsinger. that's what. I go for the balladsBut it's tough, on records, to kindsget acceptance on the ballads. You dothe beat stuff first-then they'll let yougo on the quieter material.

"You try and think of an artist who gotaway. right from the start, on ballads.

See what I mean? Not even yourMatt Monro. He had 'My Kind 01Girl' in the States before they'd thinkabout hint on 'Softly As I LeaveYou'."

WAILINGBuzz is tall-near six foot-very dark,

soft-spoken, amiable, quick to smile.He talked about his pop life backhome in the States . . .

"Since 'Baby Sittin' Boogie', things havehappened," he said. "But these per-sonal appearances are only one sideof my work.

"I have my own group which I take outfor college dances and so on. Wetravel around and adapt our perform-ances to different audiences.

"Like, for instance, in Maryland recently.We go on and really wail. We playrock material all out for a while. Theboys are pretty versatile such as theguitarist switching to vibes-and soon

we get on a cool kick. Kind of un-sophisticated jazz.

'Then I get off the beat kick and turnon ballads like 'Moonlight In Ver-mount' or 'A Blossom Fell'. Youknow the sort of thing-keep changingeverything round. Having a ball..."

His own personal tastes? Well, Buzzbuys discs by Johnny Mathis, RayCharles or Nat Cole. Mostly albums.He says: "1 don't get too much kickout of ordinary singles, though some-times something different comes upand I'll buy it. Like the Marcels and`Blue Moon'."

Why hasn't he visited Britain before?"The papers in Britain seemed to thinkI was coming a year or so back. Sodid the ones in America. But I didn'tknow anything about it.

"Tell you what, though. I'm knocked outalready by London. Especially theCockneys. London is the first realold City I've visited. I've got a kindof architecture bug-and just love

looking at all the big buildings. You'vegot some real groovy looking build-ings.

"And I just can't keep away from Buck-ingham Palace. Those guys in busbys.They don't even blink, I tell you. Iguess that even if some visitor, sayme, went up and stomped on their feetthey wouldn't even blink."

Buzz was caught in mid -rapture bysomebody arriving with a photographfor him to autograph. "That's not me-that's Dion", said Buzz. "Sorry",said the somebody. "Don't mentionit", said Buzz, with a passable Cockneyaccent.

Let's just delve into the backgroundof this amiable American who lookslike having big success on this debuttour.

He was entered secretly for a county fairtalent contest and had, literally, to beescorted to the microphone by hismates. And, story book -like, he tookfirst prize.

Now he is only tol anxious to get onstage and entertain.

At school, he was a good athlete, cap-tain of the football team --and spenthis vacations working as a stuntman,construction worker, maintenance manand life -guard.

Earlier, at six in fact, he showed aninterest in music and his early heroeswere the cowboy singers. At nine, hewas bought a guitar. His Americandisc contract was given partly for hissinging voice and partly because ofhis song -writing abilities - he has

written over 100 numbers.

His parents are both active in localtheatregroups, brother Jim also sings --and dster Priscilla (14) is the one whooffer, the criticism.

Buzz is also taking drama lessons-"tobe ready if a straight dramatic partcomes along".

His latest single: Columbia's "NobodyLoves Me Like You" and "More DeadThan Alive". P.J.

David's fans

disappointedPROBABLY you read about our spot

of bother here over the DavidWhitfield -Joan Regan show. David,you'll remember, pulled out of theSunday concert because he was due toclose the first half instead of havingthe last act as is due to star of the show.

All very unfortunate. Joan, however,went on and was very well received,and few people wanted their money back.But I was sorry all this happened, be-cause David is very, very popular inthese parts. An awful lot of his fanswere disappointed-but all I can say isthat David is a good trouper and hedoes know his own business best.

Last Saturday the Joe Henderson showclosed down-he's in a week's variety atLiverpool this week-and we've alsosaid reluctant farewells to Donald Peersand the lovely Sheila Southern, who wereanother popular show -biz partnership inBlackpool this summer.

Most of the others are going on to thefirst week in October-and our own pro-duction, with Harry Worth, Ted Hock -ridge, Sheila Buxton and Billy Dainty,is going on to record -breaking business,I'm glad to say. That's the North Piers

Up here at the Queen's Theatre onSunday was Frank Ifield, who had amost successful concert. And, ofcourse, " I Remember You " was thenumber which brought the house down.I must say that success could not happento a nicer guy....

Up here, too, was Valerie Masters forthe television show " Big Night Out."She's a very proud mother and reportsthat her baby daughter is really a bounc-ing, happy little girl. Valerie is marriedto the agent, Dick Katz, who is also a

brilliant pianist and used to play withthe Ray Ellington Quartet.

Did you see the " Sunday Night at theLondon Palladium" show last week -end ?Well, all for artists of any kindmaking records. But I do strongly adviseSugar Ray Robinson not to bother asfar as this country is concerned. He'sa great fighter, but his place is in thering. Where his singing is concerned. . . ouch

Glad to see my old mate ArthurWorsley doing so well on the sameprogramme, though. I thought he stolethe show.

Now what ? Ah-the Jimmy Justiceseries of Sunday shows at the SouthPier is now over, and he has made manyfriends here. So is the Brian Matthew -Mrs. Mills _sequence at the North Pier.

But I'll be meeting up wills Brian andthe lovable Glad at a special charityconcert with Frankie Vaughan at theRoyal Festival Hall on October 27-inaid of the National Association of Boys'Clubs, of course.

Me ? I'll be flying to London nextSunday to Make a new single. Country -styled ? That'd be telling ! But I'm inthe BBC's "Country Club" on October26.

In 1957 he was generally acknowledgedas the wildest man on record with onlyElvis Presley to rival his disc sales. Hisstage act won him a world-wide reputa-tion as king of the leg -on -the -pianosinger -players. On theatre dates he wascapable of holding the stage for threehours finishing virtually on his handsand knees exhausted. So were his fans.

PROBLEM TWO is the question ofLittle Richard's fans.

Arden is confident. This week he'sreleased the shock news that LittleRichard will make a SECOND Britishtour, by himself this time, startingNovember 12

And included will be a date atLondon's Royal Albert Hall ! Otherdates will be in provincial cities.

Little Richard will play seven dateswith a name British group to back him.

A new Little Richard disc will bereleased by Mercury to coincide with thetour. Title is "He 'Got What HeWanted", an LR upbeat composition, andthe release date is October 4.

British fans were disappointed back inthe autumn of 1957 when Little Richardwas scheduled to pay his first -ever visitto Britain.

Because almost on the eve of arrivingcame the bomb blast - Little Richarddecided to quit the business.

He made the decision while toutingAustralia with Gene Vincent.

And one story goes that LittleRichard was challenged to prove thesincerity of his beliefs. He did so,

simply by removing about £8,000worth of rings from his fingers andthrowing them into Sydney Harbour.

"That's how much I care forriches," he said.Now after five years he hits the come-

back trail. He decided to make Britainthe kick-off paint after a meeting withpromoter Arden in July this year.

But whether he is aware of the diffi-culties of presenting Little Richard, Donhas been very shrewd in including twoextremely potent names on the tour,Britain's JET HARRIS and Americansinger, SAM COOKE, still fondly re-membered far his old hits "Chain Gang",and "Cupid" as well as his more recentone "Twistin' The Night Away".

Already Sam has made news.He TURNED DOWN an initial offer

of an appearance on ABC television's"Thank Your Lucky Stars" show onOctober 6, highly regarded as a valuableshowcase for records a n d visitingAmerican stars on tour.

Says Sam: "The money wasn'tenough",

Says Don Arden "ABC offeredSam their top figure of £200, butSam is used to earning 5,000 dollars-about £1,600-a show in America.He refused it flat.

FOUR CAREERS & CAROLE KINGFOUR careers? At twenty? How come

you may well ask. In CAROLEKING'S case it comes naturally.

She's a housewife and mother-atalent spotter-a hit songwriter-and asinger and arranger.

Let's take a look at them one byone.

Carole was born twenty years ago inBrooklyn and started singing at the ageof four. At fourteen she formed a vocalgroup called the Cosines and wrotematerial for them-not too successfully.But at seventeen site look some of hermaterial to the Nevins -Kirshner associa-tion, and they were so impressed thatthey signed her to a personal writercontract.

At the same time she married GERRYGOFFIN, also an up-and-coming youngsongwriter. They settled down in NewYork and have two children-Louise,two-and Sherry, four months.

Like most young couples they like tohave a night or two out each week.Which brings us on to another careerof Carole's. They advertised for a babysitter some months ago without muchsuccess of finding a good one.

But then they found a girl who sangthe babies to sleep without too much

CAROLE KINGdifficulty. She loved pop music andsang Carole and Gerry's compositionsback to them after they wrote them. Sothe pair wrote a song in her style andtook her to the studios of Dimensionrecords, the new Nevins -Kirshner label,and recorded "Loco Motion" with her.

In a few weeks it was number one inall the U.S. charts, and had sold amillion. So thrilled was everybody at

Dimension that they decided to waxanother disc for the label. Carole andGerry penned it but this time it wasCarole who had to sing it.

The title was "it Might As Well RainUntil September" and that too soaredinto the U.S. charts. And now, both ofthe discs are in the British top fifty-quite a tribute to the King-Goffin team.

But perhaps the most important careerin the life of Carole King is her first.That is songwriting. She and Gerry haveprobably produced more hits togetherover the last two years than any othersongwriting team.

Take a look at some of these. "HowMany Tears"; "Take Good Care OfMy Baby"; "Will You 'Love MeTomorrow?"; "Her Royal Majesty";"Every Breath I Take"; "Please Don'tAsk About Barbara" and literally dozensof others.

From artists like Bobby Vee, BillyFury, and The Shirelles have come hitspenned by the top teen team. And stillthey churn out the hits.

And the question is, how many morecareers can Carole take on-and take onsuccessfully? Financially it makes nodifference to her-for she has to waituntil she is twenty-one to reap thebenefits of her teenage careers. N.J.

When he wanted to branch out as apop singer he asked his father what todo. Said the Rev. Charles Cooke: "Godgave you a good voice to use. He mustwant you to make people happy bysinging so go ahead and do so.

"It isn't what you sing that is soimportant."

In spite of this Sam has achieved suc-cess without ever singing rock and rollsongs.

He explains: "It's not that I don'tlike them but I started out as agospel singer and when I switched topop tunes I decided to stick to sing-ing blues and ballads."

Sam estimates that he has nevercut a record that has not made the

Do I" safely in the charts, leftfor his holiday in Italy saying: "Iwant a quiet time-really get awayfrom it all."It didn't really work out that way for

Kenny, who arrived back in Britainlast week.

First there was the nightclub act-alloff the cuff, ad fib-he did withcomedian Max Bygraves.

Kenny slipped into a night club inAlassio, the Cafe Roma-from whereMax filmed his British television series,"Roamin' Holiday".

Max-who used to be a near neighbourin Dagenham of the Ball family-spotted him and dragged him into thespotlight.

Says Kenny : "I borrowed a trumpetfrom one of the club musicians andoff we went. I played a bit and gaggeda bit with Max.

1 don't think my playing was very good.I hadn't touched my trumpet for afortnight remember."

It isn't the first time Max and Kennyhave appeared together. They shareda television spectacular last Christ-mas.

And Kenny also found the Ball brandof jazz popular out in Italy. Every-where he went he heard "MidnightIn Moscow" and other Ball hits.

"Midnight" went very high in the Italiancharts.

Kenny told me: "There's a market outthere for British trad. I went intoseveral record shops and saw Britishtrad discs in the racks. Bob Wallis inparticular.

"It knocked me sideways to see them.""But if I want to get away from it all,

then next year it's deepest darkestAfrica for me."

However Kenny did spend a lot of timerelaxing and underwater swimming."Couldn't catch any fish though," hesaid.

of four placings in the AnnualAmerican Disc Jockey poll organisedby the magazine BILLBOARD.

The American dee jays have voted Kennyfirst in the Most Promising Band sec-tion and fourth in the Most PromisingInstrumental group listings.

Kenny himself comes tenth in the soloinstrumentalists and his American No.1 hit, "Midnight In Moscow" comesfifth in the year's best instrumentaldiscs.

Kenny himself goes into the recordingstudios for Pye at the end of thismonth.

And one tune which will be recorded. is a march "Hazlemere".Said Kenny: "We recently did a com-

mercial-to be played on RadioLuxembourg-for a cigarette firm andplayed this number.

"Naturally it's a good idea to record it."At the end of the session, according to

custom, the cigarette firm loadedKenny with cigarettes.

"For one moment I thought I wasbeing paid in cigarettes," said Kenny."In any case I'm not sure that I won'tgive ten per cent of the total numberto my agent as his payment!" I.D.

IT WAS only a couple of weeks agothat FRANK IFIELD, then Num-

ber One in the charts, sat in the NRMoffice, pondering for all of a splitsecond and said: "There IS oneBritish singer I'm sure, particularlysure, will make it big."

KENNY LYNCH was the name.And it's a name that runs parallelwith Frank Ifield on the recordingscene. They have been admired forthe consistency of their discs, puzzledover as to why they haven't made itearlier and boosted as two of thenicest characters in the business.

SHANE'S SECRETFIFTY PER CENT.

OF SHANEFENTON'S BEST -KEPT secret leaked outlast week with the newsin a daily paper thatLionel Bart was at workon a new pop song,"Too Young For SadMemories".

And the other 50per cent. had to comeout that Bart wrote thetune especially forShane-and that Lionelhimself asked to be

allowed to do the com-position.

Two weeks ago, Bartslipped unnoticed intothe Britannia Pier atGreat Yarmouth whereShane was making oneof his regular Sundayconcert appearances. Hewas so impressed herang Shane's manager,Tommy Sanderson, andasked for copies of allthe discs the singer hadever made.

After hearing them,

he asked that he writea number specially forShane - who has hadhits on "Moody Guy"and "Cindy's Birthday"during his 12 months inshow business.

Publication of thenew song caused near -panic at the WilsonAgency in London.Shane, still hobblingwith a stick followinghis fall in the LakeDistrict while on holi-day, met Lionel for the

first time at Bart'sShaftesbury Avenueoffices.

They had an initialrun through on thesong.

Parlophone "clearedthe decks", scrappedplans to start recordingShane's debut LP andcut the new Bartnumber.

Now their on -saletarget date is October12 . . . many weeksahead of schedule.

Now Kenny seems to have made it-"Puff" is now at 33. And, amid theapplause from his show business mates,Kenny looks back . . .

He started singing more or less byaccident at the age of 12. He went toa club where his sister Maxine Danielswas singing and was introduced to themanager . . as a useful singer. Very,very reluctantly Kenny went on stage.He clicked, as they say. And he wasvery, very reluctant to leave that stage.

After school, he sang with manydifferent bands in various parts of thecountry. And be filled in with film extrawork-"Sometimes the whole of ourfamily would be called in as extras fromour home in Stepney", he said.

He was about to join Harry Gold'sPieces of Eight when the call-up peoplehad different ideas and he joined theRASC to eventually become regimentalfeather -weight champion. Even now, hehas the odd work-out with Terry Spinksand is very matey with Terry's manager,ex -champ Sammy McCarthy,

When you get a hit record, suddenlyeverybody is interested in your musicaltastes. Well, Kenny goes for Ella Fitz-gerald, Billy Eckstein and Mel Tonne.He likes plays, too-Shakespeare bestof all.

Says Kenny: "It's been a long waitbut I've always enjoyed show businessand the folk in it."

Some of the folk, notably TommySteele, Pete Murray and Anthony New -ley formed The Posse-a group some-thing on the lines of Sinatra's Clan. Theymeet, chat, see shows, chat, watch caba-rets and chat. And most of them playsoccer together for charity.

Right now Kenny is working on abook. He says it is largely autobiographi-cal and is all about the people andplaces he has known in London's EastEnd,

Kenny, you see, is an active sort ofcharacter. He's got to have somethingto keep him occupied-though now, witha hit disc, he'll have less to time tofill.

And, meanwhile, all those mates ofhis in show business are applaudinglike mad . . .

ANOTHER jazz musician surroundedby strings, but quite a different

proposition. This one is no more thanpretty. There is nothing here that wehave not heard many times before, andalthough the whole thing is pleasant andinoffensive, it has not much significanceabout it. The string writing is the usualunadventurous string writing that oneusually finds in albums involving a jazzsoloist, a kind of Hollywood pastiche.

Mitchell is a good trumpeter with afat tone and some grasp of style, butbefore the end of this album he seemsto have shot his bolt. B.G.

WITH all the brash fervour of thetrue American "amateur" this

Hollywood Dixie group play the samegimmick inspired selection as BingCrosby and Rosemary Clooney do in"Fancy Meeting You Here" (RCA RD.27105), a sort of musical travelogue.

But all this is just a bit too obviousafter the usual manner of commercialmickey-mouse bands that supply whatpasses for Trad in the States. The truthmay be that the Firehouse Five Plus Twowork far more effeciently than do ourTraditional groups, and the music on thisbright and breezy album at least has it:

own standard of entertainment value, ifyou like Dixie styled contemporary jazzsans subtelty.

So what else?Well, she works with enormous gustoand zest. Some more? She attacks thelyrics with power and confidence. More?She sings like a dream. Yes, a dream!

Top Twenty Tip. Alas, no! You canbe too good for all that. Sarah is justthat.

Flip is just as good, though not sotuneful. She swings, swings, SWINGS.A beautiful voice, tempered with goodsense and ability. And that arrangement-Whew ! is the only word to use abouther.

JAN BURNNETTE Teddy; Trust InAle (Oriole CB 1761)HERE is. we say, the most -improved

girl singer in the country-a gal whojust MUST get the big hit ere long. On" Teddy ", she has a Paul Anka songwhich was a hit for Connie Francis inthe States, though the disc was notreleased here.

Jan has all the shades of light andheavy in her voice and she is pushedalong by a Martin Slavin backing. We'revirtually unanimous that it will happenfor Jan - because she "reads" a songbetter than most of the girls and she hasan electric quality in her voice. Listenand see if you don't agree.

Flip side is the oldie "Trust In Me".Now this has been worked over by mostof the top American lasses-but Janproves that something CAN be wrungout of it that is different and stylish.She is a SINGER. And she has thesort of talents that can't be denied.

"Teddy Bear" could be the one tomake it, but big, for her.

BILLY FURY Because of Love; I'mRunnin' Around (Decca F 11508)

MR. FURY looses an arrow thatshould score a direct hit on the

hearts of all his female fans-a con-siderable total.

It's deep down Billy emoting soulfullyabout the effects of love upon hint-which are considerable. The tempo is anotch above slow and the backing in-cludes girl chorus and a multitude ofstrings.

It's more or less Billy as usual,although he sounds definitely in thePresley mould. The sales should cheerhim up considerably in his hospital bed.

There's more of a beat to the flip, afast -medium rocker which Billy buildspowerfully. The tunes and lyric aren'tall that distinctive, but Billy's treatmentcarries them into the above -averagecategory.

TOP 20 TIPVICTOR FELDMAN QUARTET ATaste Of Honey; Valerie (Fontana267233)pROm somewhere in the U.S. chartsA comes this choice offering by VicFeldman. It's called "A Taste Of Honey"and comes, appropriately enough fromthe film of that name. Nice tune, butwith some Jazz scruples sacrificed forcommercial appeal.

Not that we cared . . we liked thedisc anyway. Can't really say muchabout this, the tune is brought out onVic's piano, with sax intermittingthroughout. Modern Jazz to a degree- better we think than Brubeck.

Flip is "Valerie". This one has beenrocked up. But Vic makes a nice jobof it without losing too much tune onthe way. Same ingredients as the topside, except with sax taking the lead.We liked, again.

FOUR SSSS.JOHN BARRY SEVEN The lamesBond Theme: The Blacksmith Blues(Columbia DB 4898)I'ROM the film "Dr. No" comes theA. latest offering by the John BarrySeven. Plus a fairly large orchestra toassist him on this very Mainstream -yeffort.

Some very good big band sounds onthis quite dramatic effort. We liked it,but can't see it's commercial prospects,except as a film theme.

However, it shows yet another facetof John's versatility, But maybe he'dlike a hit once in a while, too.

Like he used to when he made discslike "The Blacksmith's Blues". The flipis a musical version of the million -seller by Ella May Morse some tenyears back. Quite good, but not asinteresting as the flip.

THREE SES'THE LAFAYETTES Caravan OfLonely Men; I Still Do (RCA 1308)PROM the group who gave us "Life'sI Too Short" comes an offering called"Caravan Of Lonely Men", of whichthere are several alternative versions tochoose.

Slow-ish with a distinctive beat, itdoesn't mean too much on the first play.We don't really think it will do toowell - the commercial appeal is doubt-ful, though the disc is well made.

Flip is called "I Still Do" and features,as the top side, Frank Bonarrigo vocal-ising. Though on this one the vocaldoesn't join in until some while aftersome gimmicky sounds. Not very good,but better than side one. The Lafayetteshave gone too much on the top tracksfor this disc. They should stick to blues.

ETTA JAMES: Stop The Wedding;Street Of Tears (Pye Int 7N 25162)

FROMStateside hitmaker Etta James

comes "Stop The Wedding". Slowand powerful with a gimmick openingfrom a studio preacher, the disc hasn'ttoo much in the way of catchiness whichthe British go for.

But nevertheless it's good. Nice work-out from the chorus and some frenziedshrieks from Etta before the disc fadesto a close.

One we don't expect to see in ourcharts.

An EmotionalBilly Fury

Flip is called "Street Of Tears" andmoves at a faster tempo than side one.But it's not quite so good, or it wouldn'tbe the flip. Good band sounds behindthe girl and her chorus, but lacking thecomplete excitement of side one.

THREE SDAVE "BABY" CORTEZ: RinkyDink; Getting Right (Pye Int. 25159)SOME years back this gentleman had

a hit in the States called "HappyOrgan", which reached No. 1. His latestoffering is called "Rinky Dink" and isin the top ten Stateside. coming up.

An organ -led instrumental, it movesat a heavy medium -tempo pace, with arepetitive yet good tune running throughit. There's solos from other instrumentsinoluded on this one, including a greatsax solo.

Rather bluesy in places, but with thattouch of commercial appeal which couldsell Baby Cortez many discs even overhere.

"Getting Right", on the flip, openswith some guitar, and the organ whistlesout the tune a few moments later. Notbad, but lacking a good tune, with per-haps more "soul" than side one. Goodfor slow dancing, but not constant listen-ing appeal. Side One gets the ratingmore or less.

FOUR SSS,ROGER WILLIAMS: NiagaraTheme; The Lorelei (London HLR9600)ROGER, said to be the most popular

light pianist in the world, gets thatflowing motion on "Niagara". With theorchestra and choir, you do get the im-pression of gushing waters and all that.Nice, precise piano, delicate sort oftouch, continuous -type backing. It's agood theme, too-and while not TopTwenty material the disc should do well.

Much, much quieter on the flip. Fromdelicate piano to very, very delicatepiano. Beautifully played, of course, andthe only criticism is that, in terms of popappeal, it takes a long while to getstarted.

The orchestra and choir come in laterto help swell the overall sound. Allvery musicianly.

FOUR t S%SVINCE HILL: There You Go; JustAs Long As (You Belong To Me)(Pye Piccadilly 35068)

VINCE, as we've said before, istroubled by having to sing on radio

so many different kinds of songs andsimulate so many different kinds ofsingers. But he personally rates "ThereYou Go" as being his best disc to date-"It's more ME", he says.

It's a fine performance a good songand swirling string -laced backing fromJohnny Keating. Plenty of dynamics inthe vocal. Could easily take off . .

but BIG. One criticism: the tune is nottoo easy to remember. Now go aheadand prove us wrong . . .

She tackles"Love Me" with considerable sympathyand her voice virtually smooches throughthe lyrics. Not a terribly strong songbut tastefully tackled and with a backing,piano especially strong, which doesn't

interrupt her one little bit. Sounds likeone for "Family Favourites", this.

But we thought more of the Boswellsparkle comes through on the flip. Shecomes in at once, piano and guitar help-ing out. Slightly "Fever-ish" in style butit shows that Eve is a most professionaland confident performer. Touches ofbrass at the end add to the ratherdramatic atmosphere.

THREE SSTAN REYNOLDS: The Missouri;Tightrope (Decca F 11510)HERE'S a bit of a wailin' swinger from

a honking group. "The Missouri"should be set fair for a lot of juke -boxplays. Everybody in for the start, thenguitar steps in twangily. Heavy old saxsound (slightly dated). Stan Reynolds is,of course, one of our leading trumpetersbut he delays his appearance until prettylate on and then it's a muted sound.Everything moves on powerfully and thetune kind of ingratiates itself after a

while. Good sales, we bet."Tightrope" has the same sort of

sound, with a repetitious opening. ThenStan's trumpet comes in loud and clear.Full-blooded tone, as ever, and he fairlypunches out the notes. But guitar comesin for a spell before Stan blows somemore.

A rich sort of sound and again itcould catch on well.

CONTINUING our tale of the "startreatment " we find our lass CAR-

MITA going through further stages inthe process this week.

As rehearsals continue there are otherroutine tasks to be carried out. One ofthese is the all-important matter of dress.For practically every day for weeks onend there will be fittings, stylings, rejec-

tions and the process will be repeateduntil the right dress in the right materialhas been found. And one dress isn'tenough, far front it.

The gentleman looking after Carmita'sdress problems is one Ray Mann andwe picture him here putting the finaltouches to one garment. Will it he theright one? That has still to be decided.

Another all important factor of pre-

paring for a big show is the contract.Without such a document neither themanagement nor the star know wherethey stand. Carmita seems perfectly happywith what she is signing as she gives herapproval to Barry Burnet, son of Pigalleboss Al Burnet.

and it's a good one. Again, like" Stranger," the tune is a simple one,and the strings lightly enhance Acker'swarm -toned clarinet.

There's a touch of accordion mid-way in the arrangement a la Parisianboulevard.

Written by Acker and Norrie Para-mor, the tune ends Acker's firm, " Bandof Thieves". From there it should gointo the charts.

"Acker's Lacquer" is also from thefilm, and written by the same duo. Ithas more of a rhythm to it and thestrings sound -off like something on aGershwin album.

Acker, undeterred, plugs away. . . .

After all, it's his lacquer. Two goodsides. Acker and the Leon YoungString Chorale have really startedsomething.

TOP 20 TIPCHARLIE GRACIE Pretty Baby;Night and Day, U.S.A. (London HLU9603)REMEMBER Charlie ? His big hit was

"Wanderin' Eyes". Since then, notmuch. He has a busy backing for "PrettyBaby", heavy ponderous beat, lots ofvoices vowelling away at the rear. Charlieseems almost dominated by the backingat times-and he also has an apparenttouch of the hiccups. Not Top Twentymaterial, this, but the juke -boxes mayecho to it for a few months. Too muchhappens for drawing -room listening . . .

"Night and Day" has a guitar intro,then a throaty Mr. Gracie enters, fairlypummelling the lyrics. Trouble is thissounded about five years out of date-in fact more like his work at the time ofhis big hit. Old-timers may go for it.

THREE SRUSS SAINTY Send Me The PillowYou Dream On; What Do You KnowAbout That (HMV Pop 1069)Buss has a steadily -growing following

through his one-nighters. He has theJohnny Tillotson opposition on "SendMe The Pillow". There's little to choosebetween all the versions of this harmlessC and W number-in fact we don't thinkthe song will enjoy the same success hereas in the States. Russ sings simply, witha lot of feeling-and we definitely likethe piano which filled in the odd gaps.Now stand by for the pillow -fight.

Flip was written by Russ-and it's alively piece with a staccato atmosphere.Big -beat ballad and all very enjoyablebut, quite honestly, not much differentfrom umpteen similar numbers. Russdoes sing well, though.

GERRY RENO Who's FoolingWho; Three Deadly Sins (Decca Ritz11516)HARMONICA opens "Who's Fooling

Who", then the pleasantly -tonedGerry comes in on a song with themerest tinge of Country feeling. Quitea good song, too. But the main interestis in Gerry's performance, which showshim capable of inventive but simplephrasing and a gentleness of approachwhich should assure his future. In fact,it is a SIMPLE disc. For that reason,it is worth watching . . .

There's more meat in Gerry's perform-

ance on the flip and we think this shouldbe the plug side. Nice marriage ofsinger and backing and Bunny Lewishas done a good recording job. Har-monica growls in any available gap.Gerry again is in fine fettle.

Not really for the charts, maybe. Butgood ne'er-the-less.

ALAN FIELDING Too Late ToWorry, Too Blue To Cry; You ReapJust What You Sow (Decca F 11518).RECORDING men are prone to

publicise rather too lavishly butDecca's team are going overboard morethan somewhat about Alan. He's a high-pitched young singer- who near -sobsthrough a useful American ballad. Thatpiano. Nashville -type, is by Earl Guest,who is on the label as Reg Guest. Alancould make it but definitely with thisslow, dreamy number but we're just ashade reluctant to tip it for the Twenty.

Flip is faster. "You Reap ..." featuresa slightly softer, but equally high-pitched, Alan. He handles the song withconfidence and again there's a goodbalance about the disc. It is by no meansas commercial as the top side, but it isa value -for -money turnover.

Alan, by the way, is a useful song-writer, too. This, his third stab at vocalhonours, is easily his best.

BRIAN POOLE AND THETREMELOES Blue; That Ain't Right(Decca F 11515)BRIAN works through a fairish number

with all the signs of having a mostpromising voice. Nice vocal touches inthe rear-incidentally, this group hasbacked several top names on disc already.Recording man Mike Smith has done agood job in varying the sounds andkeeping a good balance in continuity.Possibly not Top Twenty material-buthere is a home-grown group to watchvery, very carefully.

"That Ain't Right" is also a goodperformance. Brian has a punchy sort ofvoice, fairly individual in styling andphrasing. Strong guitar tones fill in mid-way between Brian and the vocal group.It's a darned sight better than a lot ofthe group material from the States thesedays. Give a spin or two.

MARCIE BLANE Bobby's Girl; ATime To Dream (London HLU 9599)THOUGH we've never heard of Marcie

Blane we liked her disc. It's called"Bobby's Girl" and is a medium -pacedteen -beater with some great backing workfrom the vocal group and guitarist.

Occasional dual tracking adds to thegeneral effect of this disc. She's got anice voice, very much like Joannie Sum-mers, although the song is designed verymuch for the teen market.

Commercial, with the lyric dealingwith the girl whose ambition is to heBobby's girl.

Lucky Bobby . . .

"A Time To Dream" is the title ofthe flip. And again there's some goodwork by the guitar. Song as may beguessed is slower than the top side, butnevertheless it's quite good.

We would very much like to see thisgirl in our top fifty, One can buthope . .

JACKIE LYNTON All Of Me; I'dSteal (Pye Piccadilly 35064)THE oldie "All of Me " is given a

completely new and different treat-ment. Guitar leads in, then the rest ofthe group-and the wide -ranged Jackiestarts selling. It's almost a bluesytreatment from Jack, whose third discthis is. A. lot of drama and some ofthe most unusual phrasing you've everheard. Very exciting indeed.

Tipping it is difficult. It's got all theingredients and could easily wind upthere right at the top. But it's so dif-ferent some of the jury feel it may justmiss. Good piano percolates towardsthe end. Great stuff, Mr. Lynton.

"I'd Steal" is a gentle ballad -with -a -beat and features Jackie in rather moresubdued mood. Quite good, but notoutstanding-and with a lot of basswork behind the vocal. It's not com-petition for that ravin' top side.

GEOFF GODDARD My Little Girl'sCome Home; Try Once More (HMVPOP 1068)FROM Geoff Goddard, the famous or

"infamous", comes "My Little Girl'sCome Home". Merry and bright withsome interesting sounds from the depthsof the Joe Meek studio. Not too muchto say for it - we liked Geoff muchmore as a writer than a singer. As theformer he is good - as the latter . . .just mediocre.

Nothing good or bad about this very"pop" disc.

Powerful guitar sounds open the flip.Then come some grotesque Holly -ismsdone as Mr. H. wouldn't have donethem. But the record is different andslightly off -beat. Though rather uncom-mercial.

THE BROOKS BROTHERS: TownGirl; I Can't Make Up My Mind(Pye 7N 15463)HARMONICA in this latest effort from

the Brooks Brothers entitled "TownGirl"-the one who hasn't settled downyet.

Despite the rather dated verbal pictureof the young Juke Box Queen, we quiteliked the song. The boys give it theirusual treatment, with a bit more vigourthan usual. We couldn't give thismedium -paced effort a top twenty tip-'though it may well show up there itis no better than their last disc-butperhaps moie commercial.

Flip is called "I Can't Make Up MyMind" and starts off with a pleasantguitar with the soft voices of the pairjoining in later.

PAPA RUE'S VIKING JAZZ BANDWashington Post March; Lead MeSaviour (Parlophone R 4945).FROM Scandinavian Jazz man Papa

Bee and his Vikings comes this tradoffering that is bound to do well in thecircles where they go for this sort ofthing. Familiar tune, and trumpet -ledworkout makes this as good as anyBritish trad side we've heard of late.

Only thing missing is excitement, andalthough the band try hard, they fail togenerate much more than a foot -tap fromus. But they try hard.

Flip, "Lead Me Saviour", opens at amournful tempo win what sounds likea clarinet leading. Then there's a slightchange in tempo, and the band joins insoftly for an interesting gospelly piece.Better, we thought, than side one, andbelieve it or not, more commercial intothe bargain.

Johnny's follow-up to his last hit.This one is tagged "Send Me The PillowThat You Dream On" and is the oldiedressed up in the pop C & W vein byJohnny.

Slow-ish and gentle with some lushstrings in the background and somepleasant noises from the chorus. Tuneis fair, but the whole thing strikes usas not too suitable for the British market.Maybe it isn't everyone who likes them,but we have the best ballad singers overon this side of the Atlantic.

Flip is another slowie entitled "What'llI Do". It is better, we think, than sideone, but without the syrupy commercialappeal. Quite pleasant and incongruous,and extremely easy on the ear. The tuneis good, and the side would make GradeOne late night listening. We gave theextra bell for this good side.

DELLA REESE Blow Out The Sun;I Love You So Much It Hurts (RCA1306)THE MISTRESS of song -punching has

a real go at "Blow Out The Sun"-and gives the impression that she has thelung -power to do just that. Della ishardly a commercial proposition in thiscountry but we do recommend that youtry this one. It's a better bet than a lotof her recent releases. Good powerfularrangement and a lot of those deep -brown tones which are so respectedINSIDE the business. Exciting, too. Anddramatic.

Slow, ballady flip. She really sounds inagony as she tells how much it hurts.This is more like her earlier releases. Notso catchy. But a fair song for all that.We thought it a bit over-dramatic-sortof a bit too much and that sort of thing.Organ featured. And a chat bit

JOHNNY WADE Andiamo; YouFool Of A Heart (Pye Piccadilly35076)JOHNNY is a first-rate singer, used to

be an actor, and is now part of theCyril Stapleton battery of singers, Hehas the technique, feeling and musician-ship to put across almost any kind ofnumber. "Andiamo" is an atmosphericsort of side, falling just a wee bit shorton commercial appeal. But it's a gooddisc, viewed from every available angle.Johnny is, as we have said, a first-ratesinger.

"You Fool Of A Heart" is, wethought, much better on the commercialkick and content. Beaty ballad withJohnny really injecting a swinging atmos-phere. Play this if you get the chance-it's a good British bit. Nice backing, too.with no label acknowledgment.

THE pleasant vocal mingling of theWilburn Brothers is somewhat

marred here by a few obvious commer-cial flavourings and choral effects, butthese are good country songs in the con-temporary style. Their work springs fromgood American country sources and,even with the "pop" gimmickry, theystill avoid the pitfalls of the commercialnear -country Hit Parade stars.

The best parts of this acceptable albumare in tunes like the wonderful "WildSide of Life" where the Wilburns arefirmly at home.

Not the best collection Teddy andDoyle have made but well worth hearing.

business, especially the pop sideof it, is an easy business. There aremore breakdowns, physical andmental, per hundred than evenan Old Crocks' car race.

But it shook all of us when you saidyou were fed up with it alt. Thatyou wanted to get away from it allafter only a few months ...

A few months in which you had :notched a Number One hit with"Come Outside" ; whipped into thecharts with the so-called "impossible"follow-up "Will I What" ; provedexceptional talent as a compere -hostin "Do You Come Here Often", thetelly -spectacular ; and been lined upfor a revue, films, pantomime andmajor tours.

Yes, we were shaken. We realised thatyou must really have felt stronglyabout wanting to continue your studiesand that you really did not, then,want to have your life organised in

HAD IT'apologising to their bank managers, after"gambling" on the pulling power ofAmerican disc names on one-nighters.

So what will be the trend ?Said Bobby: "Well, I HOPE it will

be for big bands. That, to be honest, isnay big interest. My father led bigbands and I've kinda grown up in thatatmosphere.

"My own career was founded on thebig band sound, but I've been side-tracked by having a hit vocal record.Don't get me wrong- it isn't that Idon't like singing, but the bands reallyinterest me.

"It there is a swing back-well, I liketo think that I'll be ready for it interms of experience and enthusiasm."

Bobby, only 22 despite all this ex-perience, is giving a hand in the Statesto a girl singer Florine Darling, a good -looker who used to sing with his bigband. He introduced her to his ownrecord label-and gave her a re-written version of "Roses Are Red".

He said : "I figured that was the bestway to help her . . . produce a follow-up to an established hit. But I under-stand that doesn't always prove sosuccessful here in Britain."

Said Bobby: "By the way, before youask me, I haven't gotten around tohearing the Ronnie Carroll version of

Roses Are Red,' but I'd sure like tomeet the guy who did me down in theBritish charts !"

EMI Records here tried to fulfil threeof Bobby's ambitions-to meet RonnieCarroll, Matt Monro and Ted Heath.

SAYS

'ROSES' MANBOBBY

VINTONRonnie was sick, in bed with a cold ;Matt was working on the South Coast-but Ted was there to hear Bobby en-thuse: "I just love your band. I haveall the records-and believe me you havemany, many fans in the States."

Said Ted : "Bobby, you have manyfans here-and there are more and moreevery day."

They chatted on....Said Bobby: "One day I want my own

television series, using a big band andgetting the sort of sound that appealsto the teenagers. I still think the kidsof my generation go for a full, swing-ing group which can play even rock androll with a solid beat and rich voicing."

Bobby's main albums in the Stateshave been "Dancing at the Hop" and"Bobby Vinton-A Young Man PlaysFor His Lil' Darlin's." He seemedsurprised that they had both gone downwell with the "elders" as well as teen-agers.

In 1960, he provided the musicalaccompaniment for stars such as Fabian,Chubby Checker, Brenda Lee andJimmy Clanton on a barnstorming'States-side tour.

Then, this year, came the Gold Disc -winning "Roses Are Red." Then "Rain,Rain Go Away "-and his two-day

Now we're shaken again-but pleasantlyso-at the news that you are to com-promise. That you are to press onwith your entertainment career, pro-vided you get enough time to study.

It's a good compromise. Your manager,Robert Stigwood, has agreed to leaveyou time in January and February,1963, to finish your novel-and alsogive you free time to prepare for yourexaminations in June.

All very fair. As is your quote: "I feelthis is an ideal solution . . . becausethe last thing I should want is toappear ungrateful to the wonderfulteenagers who have so miraculouslyaltered my life."

That's the idea. Because those teenagersHAVE come to see you, and yourstyle of recording, as something com-pletely different on the disc scene. Anydoubts you may have had must havebeen dispelled by your reception bythat huge audience at Sunday's "PopProm" at the Royal Albert Hall.

It is a pity that your "retirement" state-ments had so much publicity and your"compromise" quotes so little-but weare sure that your many fans willunderstand the situation.

In a sense you have already had aunique career in the pop world . . .

an actor -student who whipped straightinto the Number One spot. We'veheard some tracks of your debutalbum, soon to be on sale, and wepredict that that, too, will be anenormous seller.

So we say welcome back-even if you'vehardly been away! Because we believethat INDIVIDUAL talents MUST beencouraged in pops all the way. Andlet's hope we've heard an end of allthe conflicting bits and pieces . .

FOOTNOTE: Manager Stigwood saidthis week: "I can only say how glad Iam to have been able to reach thisagreement with Mike.

"I have already got his pantomimeseason reduced from ten weeks to fourweeks. This will be followed by hisWest End revue, which will leave him freeto pursue his studies all day without anytravelling commitments. And I'll be asglad as he when he passes his examina-tions.

"Once he has passed these, we willrelease him from his contract for a yearfrom October, 1963, to complete his finalyear.

"After all, Presley had two years outof the business for his National Service,so it seems only fair that Mike shouldhave one."

Bobby, by the way, also plays saxo-phone, trombone and clarinet. He's alsoa useful baseball player. And he isregarded as being "100 per cent photo-genic" by cameramen who met him inLondon-an asset which'll help himwhen the film parts come along.

A modest but knowledgeable youngman of music, Bobby is regarded as"mayor" of the scene around Pittsburgh.

One disc -jockey went on record as say-ing: "Young Bobby has taken overPerry Como's spot as Canonsburg's firstnative son."

And Bobby, very typically, said:"Maybe. But if Perry ever comes backhome, I'm taking to the hills."

Don't worry, Vinton fans-thoughBobby is back in the States now, heplans to come here as soon as possiblefor personal appearances.

As a singer. And big band boom orno big band boom.
