Summer Reading Challenge 2012

Welcome to Brent Council’s Summer Reading Challenge 2012 brochure. It’s packed with events and activities for children and families during July and August.

Celebrate stories from around the world and let your imagination take you to countries near and far!

Book your place now

All activities will be very popular, so even if the activities are free, we recommend that you book to guarantee your place and avoid disappointment. You can book online at www.bmyvoice.org.uk/brentinsummer.

Family Learning: Children must be over five and accompanied by an adult (based on one adult with a maximum of two children).

Museum family events: All children must be accompanied by a parent or carer.

Story Lab

21 July - 2 September

Children aged from 4 to 12 are invited to take part in Story Lab, this summer’s national Summer Reading Challenge by registering at their local Brent library from 25 June.

All children are encouraged to read six books of their choice for a chance to receive stickers and other prizes. Youngsters who successfully complete Story Lab by reading six books will receive a medal and certificate in their local library. There will also be exciting weekly book review competitions with the chance to win a prize and attend the special Story Lab celebration event in September.

Be adventurous this summer – discover a world of exciting folktales, fascinating legends and wonderful myths about fearless heroes and heroines all to be found in

thousands of books in your local library. Plus there’s a fantastic programme of Story Lab storytelling, art and craft workshops and fun

New this year for Brent children aged seven and over, Super Munglers Trumps are a pack of 22 trumpcards featuring the Munglers monster characters. The pack includes 21 character cards and an instruction card. Each card is scored for strength, size, speed, smell and scariness to enable the cards to be

played as a trumps’ game. Each Munglers card set forms a complete storyline. Children who join the reading challenge can collect three cards after they have read each set of two books. These can be swapped and children who complete a book review can gain another Munglers card.
