Brentwood Town Ladies FC was formed in 1999

following the merger of Brentwood Ursuline FC and Brentwood Girls FC. The Ursuline Convent High School had been running teams in the

town since 1991 and by 1998/9 had entered three teams into the Essex County Girls League

whilst Brentwood Boys had also launched a

girls’ team in 1997.

By the spring of 1999, Brentwood Ursuline had

decided that the school could no longer support

football's rapid growth and the decision was taken to

form an independent club which also took on board

the girls' team from Brentwood Boys for the best

interests of female football in the area.

The focus has now moved to a successful Ladies side,

who compete in the Eastern Region Women's

Football League (ERWFL) having claimed successive

promotions from the Essex County Women's League

in 2003 and 2004.

Having finished fifth in their first season, 2005/6 saw

Brentwood reach the play-off finals as they pushed

for promotion from Division One East. Town could not

quite reach the top tier, and subsequent seasons

saw the club narrowly miss out again having been

placed fourth in 2007 and then third in consecutive

campaigns within the newly-realigned Division One

South.

There was some success in 2008 as the Ladies won

their first major trophy, scooping the ERWFL Plate

Competition courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Kings

Sports, as well as consecutive runs to the Third

Qualifying Round of the FA Women’s Cup.

After the departure of coach Kevin Anderson at the

end of the 2008/9 campaign, 2009/10 dawned with

a new management team in place, headed by Ian

Bent. Ably assisted by David Worsfold and Lucy

Faraday in his backroom team, Bent tasted success

at the end of his first term in charge as Blues finally

claimed that elusive promotion spot, completing the

campaign as runners-up to Arlesey Town.

2010/11 now sees the Club competing in the ERWFL

Premier Division for the first time in their history.

welcome Welcome to this afternoon’s match against Hethersett Athletic. We hope that the visiting players, coaches and supporters enjoy their trip to Essex today.

What a fortnight it has been since I last put

together a set of programme notes. I said

on that occasion that the next week would

be a great test for us; I believe we have

come through that test with flying colours

and I couldn’t be more proud of my

players.

We started a run of three games in eight

days with a very creditable draw against

Stevenage Borough. On an afternoon

where both teams played some fantastic

football, it was one of the best matches I

have witnessed for a long time.

We followed that up with an impressive

performance over local rivals Chelmsford

City. That night I thought the players were

truly magnificent and once again were a

credit to themselves and this Club with the

level of determination, skill and team spirit

on show.

We completed our test with victory over

Tring Athletic in the FA Cup and my thanks

go to Lucy Faraday for managing the team

in my absence. I am led to believe we

weren't at our best that day and the tough

week was evident in much of our play, but

cup football is all about getting the result

and we did that. You can’t play at your

best in every game, so getting results

through hard work and sticking together in

difficult conditions is vital and is often the

benchmark of a good team.

Today’s game sees current league leaders

Hethersett provide the opposition and, with

us sitting in second place, I hope it will be a

great spectacle of ladies football once

again. We have started well at our new

home and the place is already starting to

feel like home, so long may that continue.

Enjoy the match,

Ian Bent Brentwood Town Ladies manager

match report

Brentwood Town defeated local rivals Chelmsford City 3-1 at Burnham Ramblers FC’s Leslie Field Stadium after fighting back from being a goal behind thanks to strikes from forward pairing Carla Rose and Nikita Whinnett.

“Tonight was a great result and was

thoroughly deserved as a reward for the

hard work and attitude on display all night

from the team,” declared manager Ian

Bent after watching his side return to the

top of the Eastern Region Women’s Football

League Premier Division. “The response to

going a goal behind was excellent; we

defended well in our units and dealt with

their long ball relatively well all night.”

Emma Ridings curled inches over the

crossbar in the seventh minute of the

match, and it was the experienced City

front-runner who scored the fixture’s

opening goal just seconds afterwards

having been presented with a chance to

chip in from 30 yards.

The equaliser arrived in the eleventh minute,

and was created when Whinnett sprung the

offside trap on the left flank. Skipper Rose

kept pace with her strike partner and was

perfectly positioned as the teenager

squared the ball to ride a challenge and

tap the ball underneath Jade Parker into

the bottom left-hand corner.

Blues began to exert more pressure and, just

before the half-hour mark, Whinnett

directed a low shot wide of the left-hand

upright before drawing a fantastic save

from Parker.

The second period began with Izzy Vian

producing an impressive save from a

Ridings exocet, getting a fingertip to the

ball to push it over

That save became even more crucial when

Town moved ahead in the 50th minute,

Leah Cowan sending a majestic centre into

the penalty area and Whinnett providing

the merest touch to send the ball nestling

into the bottom right-hand corner past

replacement goalkeeper Amy Vernon.

Vian was at it again five minutes later,

cutting out winger Lynsey Bowman’s cross

at the near post before diving forwards

bravely to claim at the feet of Ridings.

A matter of minutes after the hour mark,

Faraday tried her luck with a 30-yard

free-kick bounced over off of the top of the

bar, but Blues did not have to wait long

before extending their advantage. Whinnett received the ball 35 yards from goal and

tracked across the front of the penalty box

before caressing home her eleventh goal of

the season with the outside of her right foot.

Brentwood were almost running rampant at

this stage, and a beautifully-weighted Kelly

Walker through-ball set Rose away on the

left. The skipper cut back to cross for

Whinnett, and this time a chipped shot

scraped the woodwork.

The final clear-cut opportunity arrived 13

minutes from time as Ridings advanced on

Vian, who was quickly off of her goal-line to

beat the ball away again, and the Town

defence cleared the ball to safety one final

time.

match report

Sophie Lovell’s first half penalty kick earned Brentwood Town an FA Women’s Cup Second Qualifying Round tie away to local rivals Hutton following a 1-0 win at Tring Athletic.

Lovell confidently stroked home from twelve

yards to make sure that Blues defeated

their Greater London Women’s Football

League opposition and leave assistant

manager Lucy Faraday happy.

“With this being our third game in eight

days, I thought we looked both physically

and mentally tired,” she said. “Ultimately we

had to go out there and win the game,

which we have done, and the players

worked hard to earn the result in difficult

conditions.”

Town enjoyed the vast majority of

possession during the opening period

despite a heavy pitch and tired legs taking

their toll on the team.

Good build-up play involving Faraday,

Carla Rose and Nikita Whinnett set up

Danielle Butler within two minutes, but her

shot was deflected into the side-netting.

Five minutes later, Kellie Evans went close

for Tring as she swung a 35-yard free-kick

just inches over the crossbar.

Brentwood took the lead just before the

half-hour mark after a period of sustained

pressure. Faraday blasted goalwards from

20 yards, and Athletic goalkeeper Tripoli

Witney could only parry the ball out.

Whinnett teed up the onrushing Turner and,

when she was upended, the referee had

no choice but to point to the spot.

Lovell banished her previous penalty

demons by driving low into the net and

scoring her second goal of the season.

Town were met by stubborn resistance as

they looked to build on the lead, not least

from ’keeper Witney who thwarted Rose

when she sent a clean strike goalwards.

Faraday then went even closer as she lined

up a fearsome effort, only for the ball to

bounce back off of the right-hand post

before Kelly Walker’s well-struck attempt

was pushed away again by Witney.

The second period began in a similar vein,

Witney getting a strong hand to Turner’s

powerful shot cutting in from the left flank.

The ball climbed high into the sky, but a

combination of Witney and defender Claire

Hollingsworth managed to force it out of

play before Whinnett could head in.

As the half progressed, Tring enjoyed more

play, not least when Sally Green robbed

Lovell in midfield and her long-range effort

rebounded off of the underside of the bar.

Turner’s last action before being replaced

by solitary substitute Keeley Walker was to

make Witney claim another strike, and the

custodian was at it again in the 78th minute

as she pushed away Whinnett’s effort.

With four minutes remaining, Vian made an

outstanding save under pressure to deny

Claire Davey an equaliser, clutching the

midfielder’s shot from Evans’ corner despite

the presence of two forwards. It was to

prove important as the back-line of Lovell,

Manning, Murphy and Emma Hooker all

stood firm to head out a number of crosses

and stop Tring from netting an equaliser.

blues news TOWN RECOGNISED IN ESSEX

COUNTY FA FAIR PLAY AWARDS Manager Ian Bent described Brentwood Town Ladies’ recognition in the 2009/10 Essex County Football

Association Fair Play Awards as “a

great honour” and “a great tribute to

the squad”.

Blues were placed third in the Sunday

Open-Age category behind men’s clubs

Durassic Park, of the Chelmsford Invitation

League, and Abbey Rangers from the Terry

Reed North West Essex Sunday League.

They narrowly pipped Eastern Region

Women’s Football League newcomers

C & K Basildon, who were

highly-commended for their own

disciplinary record.

The positioning means that the club receive

£150-worth of Umbro clothing vouchers,

which have already been put towards the

purchase of a new home kit, as well as a

commemorative plaque from the Essex

County FA, to be presented at a future

home match by a member of the

organisation.

Speaking after learning of the accolade,

Bent said: “It is a great honour to be

recognised for our fair play achievements

by the County FA, and to go through a

whole season without recording a single

caution or sending off is a great tribute to

the squad and the way they play the

game.”

“To do that in a promotion season, with

added pressure of success, adds even

more to the honour and it has been

decided that the prize will be put towards a

new kit so everyone has something to show

for it,” he added.

A specially-formed judging panel assessed

the nominations using structured criteria to

identify possible winners. This included a

team’s disciplinary record, the level played

by the team and any supporting statement

provided by the league that put them

Forward.

Mick Elliott, the Essex County FA Director

Responsible for Discipline and a member of

the panel, stated: “If football is to remain as

the number one participation sport in

England it’s important we continue to

promote sportsmanship and fair play and,

through the disciplinary process, we try to

eradicate bad behaviour.”

“Fair play is the driving force behind football

and all participants should be reminded of

this before, during and after every match. I

believe we spend too much time focussing

on bad behaviour and not enough

promoting and rewarding good conduct.

These awards try to put this right.”

in town: hethersett athletic

CLUB HISTORY

It took just six seasons from the formation of Hethersett Jubilee FC in 1991 for a female side to become a component of the Norfolk club.

Hethersett Athletic, as they were now known, played their

first friendly fixture as an Under-12 girls side on 22nd

February 1998, losing 14-2 to Harford Belles Under-13s, but

just two months later the side had improved to record a

2-2 draw against the same club’s Under-11 team.

The team joined the local county league and began to

compete more regularly in subsequent seasons until they

were able to compete as an adult side in the Norfolk

County Women’s League in 2000/1.

Athletic proved their knockout pedigree by reaching the 11-a-side League Cup final in

their opening season, losing 4-3 to Aylesham. By 2005, they had progressed enough to

move into the Eastern Region Women’s Football League Division One East.

Within two years, Hethersett had won the Division One East title, winning 12 of 14 games to

hold off the challenge of Chelmsford City, who they also defeated 4-3 in the end of

season ‘round robin’ competition. That season they reached the quarter-finals of the

League Cup and were beaten in the semi-finals of the Norfolk & Suffolk County Cup.

Going into the final two matches of the 2007/8 ERWFL Premier Division campaign, Athletic

trailed county rivals Norwich City by just one point. However, the Canaries beat

Peterborough and were awarded a fixture against Haringey and Hethersett could only

manage 1-1 draws against Cambridge United and Royston Town to miss out on the title.

However, by that stage they had claimed the first of three straight ERWFL Cup victories,

triumphing 3-0 over Barking. The club have preserved their Premier Division status in

subsequent seasons, whilst defeating Cambridge United (2-1) and Billericay Town (5-1) in

League Cup finals.
