Brewarrina Central School -Secondary Challenge
On Tuesday during NAIDOC Week, all secondary students had the opportunity to participate in a MKR Challenge developed & coordinated by Mrs Hertslet as part of secondary NAIDOC activities. Year 7 & 8 were up first followed by Year 9, 10 & 11 students.
Each session was two hours and students were required to make a team of three, choose a meat (chicken, mince, steak or sausages) and develop a dish, cook it and present it to the judges. Students were supported by their class teachers – Mr Daymond, Ms Foy, Mr McNamara and Uncle Bruce and Aunty Suey.
Dishes developed included Steak Dianne with vegetable bake, honey soy kebabs, curried sausages, meat patties, chicken stir fry. A big range of vegetables were available as well as lots of different condiments (sauces, flavourings, stocks, herbs etc) for the students to use.
Each dish was judged by great mystery judges who turned out to be Auntie Bim, Mrs Close and Uncle Charlie (Yr 7 & 8) and Auntie Bim, Mrs Close and Mrs Trapman (Yr 9-11). They provided excellent feedback on the dishes and explained the judging process was very difficult to come up with a winner.
It was a great event with all students engaged and having fun. A fantastic experience for everyone
involved. Thanks everyone for making it a great event.

Brewarrina Central School News
Mrs Kath Hertslet MKR Co-ordinator
Brewarrina Central School not only provides an
excellent education for our students it also
provides them with many opportunities to be
involved in a multitude of extra curricula
activities. Over the past weeks students have
been involved in the Girlfit Camp to the
Warrumbungles, the Indigenous Games at
Goodooga, Employment Forums and Boomali. I
would like to thank all the students who have
been involved in these activities as they have
represented BCS in a respectful manner and have
been active and enthusiastic participants in all
the events. I would also like to acknowledge and
thank our dedicated staff who are committed to
ensuring that our students can excel not only in
the classroom but also in other areas.
This week we have two students, Monty and
Rehannah Russell, who are competing at the
Regional Public Speaking Finals in Dubbo. We
wish them all the best. Also this week we have
over 40 K-6 students who are going to Walgett
over two days to compete in Ricky Walford Cup.
This involves the George Rose Rugby League
Competition and the Jenny Wright Netball
Competition. We wish all these students the best
in these competitions.
Miss Rachel Holmes, who is the Kinderstart
teacher, has already been visiting the Pre School
to meet with the students who will be
participating in this program. We are all looking
forward to meeting them and their families when
they come to Brewarrina Central.
I would like to welcome Mrs Carissa Willoughby
to our school. She is working with Mr Beames on
Year 2 as part of her teacher training. All our
students are enjoying having Mrs Willoughby
work with them.
I have recently commenced the Principal’s
Training for the LMBR (Learning Management
Business Reform). Our SASS staff will also be
involved in an intense training program over the
remainder of this term. We will be adopting the
LMBR system in early Term 4. The state wide
system is a co-ordinated student, business and
administration program which will greatly
enhance the school’s operations.
School Photograph Day is on Wednesday 23rd
August. A note detailing the arrangements will be
sent home this week. Please take note of the
arrangements.
Brewarrina Central School continues to be a busy
and happy place. If you would like to discuss any
aspect of your students’ progress please don’t
hesitate to contact us at the school.
Christine Grieves
Term 3 is shaping up to be a very busy term! We
would like to welcome Mrs Carissa Willoughby
who is teaching with Mr Beames and Year 2 for
three weeks. We hope you enjoy your time here.
This week we had thirty eight students
representing Brewarrina Central School for
netball and football. They all put in a great effort
and displayed our school values and were SAFE
RESPECTFUL LEARNERS. Two students are also
attending the Regional NAIDOC Public Speaking
Finals with the topic Our Languages Matter. A big
thank you to Miss Kirby and Ms Grieves for all the
guidance and support they have given Belmont
and Rehannah. We wish them all the best.
Next week we have District Athletics. Please
return all money and notes to the front office as
soon as possible to book a spot on the bus. Good
luck to all of the children competing.
Thank you to all the families who have been
ringing the front office or coming in and notifying
when students are absent. This means we get to
spend more time on teaching and learning and
less time on paperwork, so thank you.
I’d like to remind all families that school starts at
8.30am and children are not to be on school
grounds prior to this time. Any child that is at
school prior to 8.30am will be asked to sit in the
front office until teachers start their duty at
8.30am. Breakfast Club operates from 8.30am
until 8.50am and all children are welcome to pop
in and have some breakfast.
Sometimes things happen at school and your
child may go home and let you know but have not
told anyone at school what is happening. Please
feel free to give us a ring or call in and discuss any
issues you or your child is having; we are here to
help. When staff have been informed of incidents
that happen in the playground they are able to
deal with them quickly and effectively. Thank you
for working together with us to make Brewarrina
Central School a great place of learning.
Thanks, Beck Williams

Week 3
Staff and students are now steadily into the swing
of Term 3, and it is absolutely flying by. Our Girl
Fit girls are back from their camp at the
Warrumbungles, and from all reports had a
fantastic time with many new experiences and
bonding opportunities.
Boomali has been doing some different
workshops with our students, last week having an
hour and half session around post-school
employment. The school welcomes input from
outside agencies that might support our students
with their dreams and aspirations when they
finish school.
Year 7 continue to be a challenging group this
year. We feel we have made some in-roads in
supporting positive behaviour from this group of
students, and we are thankful for parent/carer
support in regard to this. Adjusting to the
expectations of High School can take some time,
and we do everything we can to ensure our
students are happy and safe at school. It has been
good to see some changes in our Year 7 group,
though there is still some work to be done.
Year 11 Yearly Examinations will be in Week 8.
Students should be using their time wisely and
ensuring they are revising their work. They can
ask their teachers for help if they need it.
Please remember if you have any questions or
concerns about your child to contact the school.
Sarah Trapman
Head Teacher
At our school we are
Safe
Respectful
Learners
The data from the last fortnight has shown that
the most common behavior recorded in
Millennium is “Disrupting the learning of others”.
Students display behaviours such as yelling,
walking around the room, touching others, and
refusing to follow staff instruction. When
students do this, it affects the learning of all
others in the class, which is unfair and
disrespectful. Most of the time, the student is
displaying the behavior to gain attention or avoid
the task. All staff are focusing on:
Reinforcing the importance of showing
respect for classmates and their learning.
Catering to all the learning needs of
students within the classroom so they are
able to complete the set task
Using constant recognition of positive
behaviour
Using consistent consequences if the
behaviour of disrupting others continues
after warnings.
Last Friday 4P presented their speeches to their families and class members.
They should be commended on their confidence and efforts, Aunty Sherrie,
Aunty Lesley and I are very proud of every student as they spent a lot of time
planning, drafting and practising over the last few weeks. Each student
prepared a speech about ‘people they look up to’. There were some very moving
speeches with many parents feeling extremely warmed by hearing our students
giving details of the many amazing friends and family they have in their lives.
Thank you to everyone who came and watched!
New Term brings a New Lab. Whilst the outside of
the lab may look very similar to the old one, the
inside has certainly had much more than just a
facelift. Students have started Term 3 with
enthusiasm for practical lessons after having to
make do without a lab last term, so the Science
Teachers have tried not to disappoint!
Year 10 are studying Chemistry this term and in the
first week not only demonstrated that atoms have
mass and take up space but that they are constantly
in movement during their practical lessons in the
lab.
Year 8 are lucky enough to have one maths lesson in
the lab a week and will be using this time to practise
applied mathematics involving measuring, weighing
and data collection, interpreting graphs and
calculations. Friday’s practical involved the
oxidisation of magnesium and showing through
accurate measurements and the calculation of
product yields that magnesium gains weight when
oxidised. Their next experiment will involve
calculating the efficiency of different fuels when
they are burned.
Year 8’s Brain Teaser
Year 8 would like you all to have a go at a puzzle they completed
during the week, there are two different solutions.
Can you find both?? Ask Year 8 if you need help!
Last week, the ‘Girlfit’ Girls went to The
Warrambungles for a camp. The girls
were eligible to attend as they achieved
the required amount of training points,
had great behaviour, attendance and
engagement at school.
We were there for two nights and it was
freezing. The temperature dropped to -2
degrees each night and there was frost
everywhere.
We went on an amazing hike that was
quite challenging. It was an 8km circuit
and was up hill most of the way,
however the girls were rewarded with an
amazing view at each look out stop.
We also participated in many other
activities around role models and health
and well-being which included making an
iMovie, drumming circle and yoga.
The girls were also treated to some
traditional Aboriginal dance by some
local teenage boys and some great
stories from local Aboriginal Elder Aunty
Maureen Salta.
The camp was one of the most
challenging and rewarding camps that
we have been on and we are already
looking forward to our next one!
