  • Emergency Operation Plan

Have you ever wondered what to do if you were confronted to an emergency situation at the College? Are you prepared to act if there is a fire, a medical emergency or an armed intruder on campus? Many college community members have come up to me, saying they had no clear idea of how they should react in those situations. Even if those events are rare, being prepared is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. Please take some time to review the Vanier Emergency Operation Plan, which details the steps to follow in order to react to a great variety of unusual or dangerous situations that could happen on campus, ranging from receiving a threatening email or phone call, to a flu epidemic, to putting the campus on lockdown. Note the Emergency Operation Plan is also available at all times on the Vanier Security webpage (www.vaniercollege.qc.ca/security) and on the Health and Safety Community on Omnivox. If you would like to get additional information or provide feedback on the Plan, please contact [email protected]. Be prepared, be safe!

    PEER TEACHING COURSE

The “Peer Teaching” course is a special B-Block English course (603-HS course) open to students in all programs and offered every winter semester. Every fall, I recruit students with strong English language skills who are interested in learning how to teach and help other students. This course is a good opportunity for exceptional students to gain valuable peer tutoring experience while also obtaining a B-Block (603-HS) English grade. Please encourage motivated and interested students in your classes to apply for my course by Friday, November 28, 2014. The students who apply must have already taken two English courses and passed them with a grade of 75% or over.

Furthermore, they must be students who have not yet completed a B-Block English course. Application forms are available at my office (N-554) and at the FSGS Dean’s office (B-208). The applicants will be interviewed in early December and selected according to their level of excellence, commitment, and responsibility. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me at ext. 7271 or to send me an email at [email protected] Thank you for your consideration.

ONLINE GRADE SUBMISSION FOR FALL 2014 SEMESTER - DAY TEACHERS

Please note that the deadline is MONDAY, DECEMBER 29, 2014, 12:00 MIDNIGHT. All grades must be submitted online. You will receive a memo summarizing the steps to follow in your OMNIVOX account. If you need assistance using the Omnivox online system, please contact Pierina Primiano at 7109 or Janet Perkins at 7114 during regular office hours. It is very important that all grades be submitted by the deadline as the Registrar’s Office cannot determine those students in poor academic standing nor graduate students until all the marks for the semester have been entered. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

    Of Interest to Researchers

  • Every year several Vanier teachers are involved in helping with this event and some Vanier graduates have been prize winners in the past. This year, Denis Sampson, a former Vanier English teacher who published a memoir last summer was there. His memoir entitled A Migrant Heart has a chapter about being an English teacher at Vanier, although much of it is about growing up in Ireland, settling in Montreal and many other things that have given a shape to his life. Even Vanier students were present. In fact, the mood for the evening was set by Vanier’s own Vanier College Jazz Combo with singer Sarah Rossy, Daniel Witkowski (piano), Daniel Di Cintio (bass) and Anthony John Aboud (drums) – all Vanier Music graduates or current students.

    Teaching Tip: Concept Maps

Concept mapping is a process in which a sequence of ideas (whether they are a hierarchy, comparison, opposites, or parallel) is visually represented. The goals of a concept map are to show ideas and how these

ideas connect and relate to each other. Why Concept Maps? Concept maps can help students to understand complicated concepts because it shows them the connections between different ideas. This can often help them understand complex ideas that they are struggling with. Students who prefer a visual learning style also benefit from concept maps, as it is a strong visual cue for learning difficult concepts. High Tech or Low Tech There are a number of programs that you can use to help build concept maps with your students. Bubbl.us and Lucidchart are available online for free, and cMap is available in most of the classroom computers in the college. Although these various software applications make concept maps that are easily edited and visually pleasing, they are not necessary for the pedagogical benefits of the mapping process. A concept map can easily be made using pen and paper. Post-it notes also make a helpful concept mapping tool. By writing out the different concepts on the notes, placing them on a paper or whiteboard, and then drawing in the connecting lines, you have a visually pleasing map. A Reflective Process Have your students create a concept map regarding their beliefs or opinions about a guiding concept of your course early on in the semester and collect it as a formative assessment. In the final weeks, while wrapping up your course, you can re-distribute the maps and have students make adjustments, or you can ask them to re-create the map with their new beliefs or opinions. This is an excellent metacognitive activity that can help your students see

where they were and allow them to compare it with where they are. Map your Course Outline Why not get the ball rolling by taking your course competencies and concept map them? This will provide you and your students with a visual tool you can use to track the semester’s learning progression. For more information regarding concept mapping, please contact us at the PDO! For this and more Teaching Tips, please visit the PDO web page.

Wonderful evening at « Pay it Forward » Fundraising Concert raises $2,360

A delight from beginning to end, last week’s Marimba Magic concert cast a spell on audience members. From Bach to Broadway tunes and a spectacular rendition of Robert Slapcoff’s Breezy Point Variations featuring soloist Patrick Graham and the Vanier College and Lindsay Place High School Percussion ensembles, everyone joined Greg MacIntosh to celebrate his gift of a marimba to Catherine Varvaro, another Vanier graduate. One hundred performers came together with Four men and a marimba and accompanist Glenna Ferland, singers from Ensemble Extravaganza (Bruno Dufresne, dir. ) and the Lyric Theatre Singers (Bob Bachelor, dir.), and jazz/pop singer Mélodie Rabatel. We thank everyone who attended the concert and contributed to the Vanier College Musical Instrument Fund.

  • Vanier graduate now a McGill Engineering student returns to work on projects with Vanier Science students

My name is Maged Yassin; I’m a Vanier graduate and a second year Honours Mechanical Engineering student at McGill. My interest in robotics began in high school when I was fascinated with building mini-robots and hacking toys on my own. Now I am in university and my passion for robotics is more professional. This fall it was my pleasure to return to Vanier to work with Vanier students on biomechanics projects. During my research on how robotics can be related to biomechanics, I was inspired by the “One Dollar Glasses Project”, by a group of students from the Technical University of Munich, Germany (TUM) that won the 2013 “Enactus” World Cup. Through their project they helped over 150 million people by providing some individuals with the knowledge needed to hand craft glasses they then sold to others for only $1. This idea of using knowledge and technology to improve people’s lives made me think of using robotics to help amputees find cheap alternatives to expensive prosthetic hands they cannot afford. The project involves developing a 3D printed robotic hand that can actually move and serve as a prosthetic hand. We will use The Open Hand Project http://www.openhandproject.org/ along with the Myo and Arduino platforms as a base of our research. The hand prototype will use lab-generated signals similar to the natural ones from the muscles. Those signals get amplified and filtered then translated into hand movements using a microcontroller; the artificial fingers are mechanically driven using actuators and artificial tendons similar to those in a human hand.

Vanier Science students working on the neuromuscular anatomy division will have the opportunity to study and understand the structure of the human hand as well as mechanisms of motion and neuromuscular transmissions. Mechanical design will start after the R&D phase where CAD software (SolidWorks/Inventor) will be used to create 3D drawings of the artificial hand to be 3D printed using ABS plastic. A complete user interface will be developed using LabView so that members of the research group will be able to monitor and analyze the performance of the hand. Vanier students working on this project will develop skills and experiences not offered in college classrooms and they will experience working with university students and staff.

I would like to thank the VSRC and Vanier College at large for letting me explore an interesting research field that I had never thought of, namely Biomechanics.

    Flu Clinic at Vanier

Did you know that approximately 7.5 million workdays are lost to the flu in Canada annually, most of them between the months of December and April? That on average, people with the flu miss 3 to 5 workdays?

Get yourself protected by receiving your flu vaccine right here, at Vanier! The Clinique de Médecine

Industrielle et Préventive du Québec has been mandated to come and give flu shots to interested students and employees on December 3 and 4 from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the cafeteria area (“marketplace”). The cost for the shot is 12$, payable directly at the clinic.

Please note that you will have the option to register in advance if you want to book a specific hour, or to drop by at any time while the clinic is open. Keep an eye on your Vanier email inbox or the Omnivox Health and Safety community for details! For more information about the flu vaccine, please click here.

community about the type of topics to discuss on the show. We are also looking for teachers or staff who would both like to suggest a topic and be included as a guest.

Optional details: Each episode will run for about 10 minutes which means that a guest host will need to dedicate about 1 hour of their time for shooting. Although the shooting schedule can vary, we typically aim to shoot on Friday afternoons.

    November 24-28, 2014

    Vernissage: November 26, 12:30 pm.

Artists’ Statement: "These videos are a diptych to express a metaphor for artistic creation, both the method and the fear that comes with it. Two separate visual representations, presented in a gallery, share the same sound to combine the works and make them whole. Together, they illustrate our vision of how the artistic process functions as well as creating a self-portrait for all artists from the perspective of two young artists. The audio shared between the videos works as a means to demonstrate where our inspirations are drawn. The presentation in a gallery allows a sense of competition through the use of dual screen. This competition reflects the reality of the artistic world. The audiovisual experience as a whole illustrates a transference of feeling and emotion, a necessary step in the process of art. Together, they become a self-reflection for ourselves as two young artists entering the world of creation."
