    THE A.C.E. SYSTEM

The A.C.E. curriculum is academically sound

IndividualisedEach child has had unique experiences, has capabilities, interests and current needs. TheACE curriculum is designed to facilitate learning through self-instructional materials enablinga student with varied abilities to advance academically in all subjects. He will then realise hishighest potential.

AchievementPeople thrive on achievement. It is a vital, motivating factor. You can teach facts and give

information but learning involves desire for knowledge. This system rewards success inacademic achievement. No fast student is held back and no slow student has to keep upwith children his own age. Both can succeed.

MotivationProfessional guidance provides control and inspiration. The teacher as an advisor, supervisorand friend is there to stimulate co-operation, to inspire and motivate maximum learning andto encourage respect for leadership.

    THE A.C.E. curriculum is Christian

Bible CentredEducation is about life and the Bible is the 'Book of Life', providing the framework to allhuman relationships and principles of teaching. It is the basis of the school's curriculum. TheACE curriculum presents a learning and social profile that are totally Christian. Humanismand the 'new' morality, along with 'post-modern' ethics are refuted and replaced with theabsolute standards of right and wrong, based on scriptural principles.

    CHRISTIAN CURRICULUM

The ACE curriculum has been produced by teachers and writers with higher degrees and

wide classroom experience. The principle of ACE is that, if a school is Christian based, thenthe curriculum must be Christian based. All the materials are in harmony with a biblicalworldview.

The ACE curriculum is based on success

Learning, not failureChildren do not come to school as failures. If a child is placed in an academic situation

beyond his capability there is a real danger of his becoming conscious of failure. This leadsto frustration, which may lead him to act irresponsibly, aggressively or to 'drop out' of thelearning process.

Discipline problems in the classroom and a high rate of absenteeism result from frustrationsarising from academic failure. The ACE system minimises academic failure throughindividualised learning where the child is encouraged and motivated to reach his highestpotential.

SuccessReal success in life is fulfilling God's will. Academic learning and a high sense of Christianvalues can be attained through Christian Education.

    LEVELS OF CURRICULUM

Advancement to new information is not permitted until testing shows that the student hasthoroughly understood all the material in the previous PACE. capable students can advancewithout being held back by those who need more time to assimilate information.

The academic staff are released by this method to devote more time to each student, asthey work at their own speed on PACES at the right level for their ability.

If a student is unable to solve a problem, he/she can request help from their supervisor, whowill help him/her find an answer to the problem. Since this instruction takes place privatelyin the student's own 'office' there are no embarrassing moments in front of the whole classand the student is free to learn.

    THE CURRICULUM STAGES

Pre-school (usually for children 3-5 years)

At Bridgend Christian School we believe that a young child's first introduction to schoolshould be fun, where he/she can learn social skills, the wonder of God's creation and thereality of His love, as well as learning to read and write. The Pre-school curriculum is ayear's course, full of activities, songs and fun learning activities. We use a phonics basedmethod because it is a proven learning method to help children learn to read faster andbetter than those who do not.

The children have their own full colour workbooks of animal and Bible stories which helpdevelop hand eye co-ordination and visual perception, sequencing skills, auditory processing

and spatial awareness. For children of this young age this Pre-school course takes placeduring a morning session only. A Progress Report enables parents to be aware of theirchild's progress.

ABC'S (usually for children 4-6 years)

The ABC'S course is a multi-sensory phonetic 'Learning to Read' course designed toprepare the child for the individualised instruction of the school curriculum. The 'Learningto Read' course itself takes about 15 weeks and is full of fun with many activities, songs and

animal and Bible stories to help the child learn letter sounds, alphabetic sequence and wordrelationships.

Your child is also helped in their physical and Christian character development throughthese activities. When the 'Learning to Read' course is completed each child is introducedto the basic school curriculum. They use workbooks called PACES in Maths, English, SocialStudies (History and Geography readers), Science and Wordbuilding (spelling). Your child istaught the responsibility to set work goals each day and enjoy the success of completingthem, thus building their confidence and self-esteem. A Progress Report shows your child'sprogress through the 'Learning to Read' course and the first foundational year in school.

    Junior (usually 6-11 years)

The basic curriculum for all students has six core subjects:

    Mathematics

English Grammar Social Studies (History and Geography) Science Word Building (spelling) Creative Writing and Literature

These subjects are presented as small workbooks called PACES. They enable each studentto master the information for themselves at their own personal rate. There is a test at theend of each PACE. This enables the Supervisor to plot each child's progress which is thengiven to parents as a Progress Report. In this way each student is personally assessed.

Biblical truths permeate the ACE curriculum so the students benefit both in terms ofacademic training and character development.

The information in each PACE follows on from what the student learned in the previousPACE. In this way each student adds to their store of knowledge. PACES allow students toprogress steadily through the curriculum, building a firm base of knowledge.

This acquired knowledge is then used and extended in the 'project' lessons in theafternoons. There are many varied activities including Art and Crafts, Music, Writing skills,

Performing skills, Practical Maths and Science and Sports skills.

Senior (usually 11 years to graduation)

All students work through the basic curriculum. When PACE 1085 is reached the student

begins to earn credits towards their International Certificate of Christian Education(I.C.C.E.)

The I.C.C.E. board was set up in response to the need for an alternative to secularexamination systems. It is based on the A.C.E. curriculum, which has been used in BritishChristian schools for more than three decades.

At this level students can begin to choose from over 30 additional courses, for example: Art Business Studies Computer Studies (ECDL) Additional Science French Spanish English Literature Church History and Bible Studies Government and History Auto-Mechanics Music Theory Speech Home Economics

    INTERNATIONAL CERTIFICATE of CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

    What is the ICCE?

The International Certificate of Christian Education is a Christian alternative to secularqualifications and is gaining increasing acceptance by employers and universities in the UKand elsewhere. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) UKQualifications Handbook includes details of both the ICCE and its forerunner, the NCSCand in 2009 the International QH will also include details of the ICCE.

UK NARIC has issued a statement comparing the ICCE Advanced level to the CambridgeInternational Examination A levels.

The certificate and transcript are presented in a smart folder entitled Record ofAchievement for Christian Education. This includes an explanation of the ACE programmeas well as space for other achievements and experiences and a Personal Statement by thestudent.

Six levels of certificate are offered:

ICCE Basic CertificateThis is designed for pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities and requires 48 PACEs ineach core subject at any level. It has flexible graduation requirements to meet the needs of

    the individual.

ICCE Foundation CertificateThis is for lower achieving pupils or those who join the ACE programme late. It is only forthose who are not progressing any further. It requires 7.5 units at ACE level 8, includingone option.

ICCE General CertificateThis is for pupils of average ability. It requires a further 6.5 units at ACE level 9 plus twopieces of coursework and three options.

ICCE Intermediate CertificateThis is designed for above average pupils. It requires a further 7 units at ACE level 10 plus 3pieces of coursework.

THE ICCE CERTIFICATES AND THE NATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FRAMEWORK

In 2000, the Government announced a new framework that would include all qualificationsissued by awarding bodies in the UK. The National Qualifications Framework (NQF)includes NVQ, GNVQ, GCSE, AS, A2, AEA and many other awards.

We cannot claim direct equivalency with any secular qualification. The following tableshows approximate similarity. Students are readily accepted for college with the Foundationor General Certificate (ICCE) and into Universities with the Advanced Certificate andsometime only the Intermediate Certificate.

It is difficult to be any clearer on making comparisons simply because the curricula aredifferent. Therefore it makes more sense to see ACE curriculum as a separate entity andfree students to do their best within it.Many parents have chosen Christian Education because they recognise that they have aresponsibility under God to ensure that their child fulfils his or her destiny and calling. Theywant to ensure that their children have a Christian world-view and a personal understandingof Biblical morality. The I.C.C.E. Board has been set up to assist in these responsibilities.

    EXPANDED CURRICULUM

Using an individualised curriculum in no way limits a student's development in working in

groups and becoming confident and sensitive in relating to others.

There are many opportunities in school for additional Art and Music sessions, PracticalScience and Maths, IT, Singing Lessons, Discussion Groups, School Trips etc.

We make weekly use of the indoor and outdoor facilities at Bridgend Recreation Centre, for our Sports Sessions.

The school makes a priority of attending the annual A.C.E Student Convention, wherestudents can participate in about 200 events. These events vary from Science Exhibits toOne-Act Plays, Athletic Events to Poetry, Writing Short Stories to Reciting, Singing to

Painting. The Convention is a 4-day event and a highlight of the school year. We also enjoyother links with A.C.E. students around the UK.

All students are encouraged to be involved in creative initiatives in the church andcommunity life of Bridgend and the communities in which the students live. Past studentshave been involved in taking a drama presentation to local primary schools and singing in theschool choir in Bridgend Centre. The style of curriculum makes it ideal to involve studentsin both short and long term mission activities, locally and abroad. The school has many linksworld-wide to help facilitate this.

    ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

Any student with English as a second language will be assessed using the ACE Diagnostic

tests and an English Language Course may be provided, to improve language skills beforefully implementing the ACE Curriculum and the Suffolk Reading Scheme Tests. We requirefull support from the parents/guardians of these students and we will fully support thesestudents with a Reading Monitor and an Individualised Curriculum and encourage thesestudents to socialise fully to improve language skills.

    SPECIAL NEEDS

As a small school at the moment, we are unable to provide a permanent S.E.N policy, butwe are happy to be contacted on an individual basis to consider that student's needs.

If we admit a student with wider additional needs, the school has the policy to implement anindividual educational plan (lEP) for that policy student. All staff will be informed to focus onthose needs and to monitor and review that plan with the student and parents on a regularbasis.

    CAREERS

The school has guidance from the local Careers Office and students may attend the officewhen necessary. The Careers Officer visits the school when the student reaches theappropriate year level for a career report to be written.

We also work closely with the Link Officer between school and the local college. At schoolthere are many resources conveying careers information to the students. A member of staffoversees this area and is responsible for arranging work placements and advising on suchthings as interview techniques and writing CV's. These important issues are prayerfullyconsidered with each student. Parental involvement is essential.

    BEHAVIOUR MANAGEMENT POLICY

Discipline plays an important part in the school life of any child and it is a condition of

admission that parents guarantee to support the staff in enforcing school rules andprocedures, as laid out in this prospectus and the Student Handbook given to every studenton enrolment.

Absence, except for illness, is not permitted without permission from the headteacher orsupervisor in charge, in response to a written application. This is a legal requirement.

A student's attitude, conversations and behaviour are to reflect Christian standards incourtesy, respect, kindness, morality, honesty, dress and general demeanour. It is the aim ofthe school that students learn to internalise God's values and recognise that He writes His

    laws on their hearts.

    INCENTIVE POLICY

When a person assumes greater responsibility in life he earns greater privileges. This

principle is taught through the ACE Graduated Incentive System. Rewarding achievement isa sound principle and encourages students to press on for greater achievement. Privilegesare awarded according to how hard children work and how well they behave.

From time to time students need discipline. The system of demerits, leading to a detention, helps staff control and train each student to establish good work and social habits.

    Demerits

A demerit is a slip of paper stating '1 Demerit'. It is given for errors in procedure andbreaking school rules.

A 'Corrective Action Notice' (called a detention) is a yellow slip showing 3 or moredemerits and stating why they were given. Students given a Corrective Action Notice mustshow it to their parents that day, ask them to sign it and return it to their supervisor thefollowing day to serve detention in lunch break.

A 'Red Demerit' is a warning demerit to tell a student that a particular action MUST stop. Itis given for a violent/abusive action to other students or staff and will start a sequence ofevents:

1 Red Demerit - The student's parents will be informed immediately and the studentgiven detention AFTER school the following day.

2 Red Demerits In 1 week - Parents will be phoned and asked to collect their childfrom school after discussion about the offence. The appropriate action will be takenin consultation with parents.

3 Red Demerits in 1 week or regular occurrence of abusive behaviour - Procedureas above and a Parent Conference arranged immediately to discuss behaviour andappropriate action and possible withdrawal from school.

    Merits

Merits are school 'currency' earned for good work and conduct and given by staff. They canbe spent in Merit Shop in Friday Lunch Break or saved for 'no uniform' days or privilegetime with parents, etc.

At Bridgend Christian School we support parents in training their children and like to workclosely with them and maintain an 'open door' policy for parents to see staff at anyappropriate time to discuss any issues that arise.

    BULLYING POLICY

At Bridgend Christian School we do not believe that bullying is an inevitable part of school

life. The supervisor in each Learning Centre sets the tone for that class and is important inproviding a supportive and stable environment for each student. All forms of bullying aretaken seriously and looked into at once. Every student is a member of the schoolcommunity and has a right to enjoy their time at school whether learning or in breakswithout the stress induced by any form of bullying.

Any parent can look at and discuss this policy and any other policy by asking a member ofstaff.

    SEX EDUCATION

One of the overall aims of the school is that the students understand how much God valuesand loves them. This encourages self respect and respect for others which should underpinany sex education curriculum. We have two members of the School Board who are highlytrained and skilled in advising young people. They are committed to God's principles and usetheir own resources together with 'Care for the Family' sex education curriculum so thestudents can receive the support they need. The school will be in close communication withparents over these matters and appreciate that the home is the primary place in whichchildren are educated.

    USE OF WELSH

Welsh language, culture and history are positively promoted in Bridgend Christian School. But at the moment we have limited resources to teach Welsh to the students.

    SECURITY POLICY

As the school is on a main road, we are aware that we need security measures in place. Wedo have a special catch on our main gate and the smaller gate remains locked. But due toFire regulations we are unable to lock all school doors or secure the premises further.

We make all students aware of 'stranger danger' and ask parents to inform us if their child isbeing collected by anyone other than them. All Primary students are supervised until they

are collected by parents or an authorised adult.

All staff working in the school have been police checked. All Fire Procedures are in place with regular fire appliance checks and fire drills. The school has a Health and Safety Policy. All parents can access all school policies and may request them and a copy of the

    Complaints Procedure at any time.

Bridgend Christian School provides academic training, in a loving, Christian

atmosphere, that enriches lives, builds character and self discipline and encourages

    PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT

Crucially, your involvement in school life strengthens the relationships between people andfosters the family atmosphere that we all value so much.
